The lich is, perhaps, the single most powerful form of undead known to exist. Liches are the remains of great wizards who embrace undeath as a means of preserving themselves. They further their own power at any cost, having no interest in the affairs of the living except where those affairs interfere with their own. Ghouls are among the most iconic corporeal undead. Haunting graveyards, battlefields, and crypts, they hunger for the flesh of living or recently dead creatures. Once human, ghouls are vicious killers driven mad by an unending gnawing hunger. They crave nothing more than to tear into and consume the warm flesh. It consumes their every thought and overrides even their sense of self-preservation. Still, even with their deranged and destroyed minds, ghouls have a terrible cunning which enables them to hunt their prey most effectively. Of all the chaotic evil undead creatures that stalk the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons, perhaps none is more dreadful than the vampire. Forever shunning the light of the sun, Vampires upon creation are awakened to an endless night. They lust for the life they lost and sate that hunger by drinking the blood of the living. Moving silently through the night, these pallid undead stalk their prey without mercy or compassion. Support us on PATREON and check out the first issue of Legend Magazine for free! None can win the war with death, but losing the war does not mean the combatants have seen their last battle. Warriors who wish to fight beyond the limitations of flesh and blood can seek a forbidden way to steal their souls from fate. The cost of this immortality is death, but the fearless few who pay this price become death’s allies. Indeed, death bestows power upon them. Their fleshless bones clad in skins of armor, their brittle fingers clasping weapons with a grip of iron, these knights of death take command of their souls and their destinies. When they charge from the shadowy afterlife into the lands of the living, death knights ride to wage war upon life itself. Deep beneath the surface world lies a realm of darkness, danger, and betrayal. Although many races claim it as their home, the sinister drow claim to be its rulers. With arrogance that few can manage, the drow lord over their slaves, scheming and plotting behind the backs of their kin. Despite their sense of superiority, the drow fear one thing: their dark goddess Lolth, Queen of Spiders. Check out our sponsor Tabletone! The horrors the Abyss disgorges are without number, and no limit restricts the disquieting forms that its spawn, demons, can take. Easily the most disgusting master to claim dominion over the tainted host is the creature known as Juiblex, He Who Slithers, the Unnameable One, Glistener, Indescribable Darkness, and Slick of Foulest Humors. In the sinister land of Thay, scheming mages called Red Wizards dominate a society steeped in magic and deceit. Those without magical or economic power are at the mercy of these fascist mages, who harshly punish any who defy them. The truth is that the Red Wizards are a threat to all of Faerun, held back by the Simbul and Rashemen and their own disorganization. Those who know Thay realize that it is the Red Wizards' own lack of a coherent structure and their refusal to combine forces that keeps them from conquering the rest of Toril. But there is one among them who wishes to change this. Thay is also infamous as the home of Szass Tam, the dread lich who seeks to rule this nation and turn those who oppose him into undead minions. Tavern tales across sunlit lands whisper of the Underdark, a lightless, subterranean realm that is home to fabled races and ancient, unspeakable evil. It is a domain of primeval mysteries and unending war, a hidden world of cruel masters and hopeless slaves, filled with monstrous creatures that were old before humans were born. Aboleths. Beholders. Mind Flayers. Eldritch entities of unspeakable visage. And yet, despite the potentially greater danger posed by these and other horrors of the deep, it is the Drow that might well be the most notorious of all the Underdark races. These most dreaded of underdark dwellers were once part of the community of elves that still roam the world's forests. Now these dark elves inhabit black caves and winding tunnels under the earth, where they make dire plans against the people that still walk beneath the sun, on the surface of the green earth. In Dungeons and Dragons, a monster is defined as any creature that can be interacted with and potentially fought and killed. Even something as harmless as a frog or as benevolent as a unicorn is a monster by this definition. An obstacle to overcome. An interactable entity to fill in an imaginary world. And sometimes, a monster is a metaphor. But one monster, more than any other, represents the awe and terror humanity can feel before the forces of nature. It represents the inevitability of every person, society, and culture's ultimate futility against the eternity of time and and the insignificance of our power, ambition, or potential. The inevitable end and our inability to stop that end from coming. I am of course speaking of the Tarrasque. The greatest of all monsters. Asmodeus. The Archfiend. The overlord of all the dukes of hell. He is a primal embodiment of lawful evil and a supreme strategist of unparalleled skill. He alone commands all devilkind and reigns as the undisputed master of the Nine Hells. Even the deities that call that plane home pay Asmodeus a great deal of respect. His sinister machinations may take centuries, if not millennia, to come to fruition. His master plans extend across universes. And his labyrinthine, insidious intrigues are inexplicable to most outside observers, for Asmodeus lets even his own servants stew in fear of his next move. A demon princes’ arrogance is exceeded only by their ambition. One such demon prince is an insidious presence that worms into mortal hearts and minds, and deceives them into turning away from righteousness to embrace brutality. This agent of destruction is Baphomet, known as the Prince of Beasts, the Trampler, the Minotaur Lord, and the Horned King. Born from the churning chaos of the Abyss near the dawn of time, Baphomet is the embodiment of savagery, one of nature’s most destructive aspects, and the catalyst that looses the beast residing in us all. To feel the thunder of orcish war drums outside the gate and to hear a chorus of voices growling, “Gruumsh!” is the nightmare of many human, dwarf, and elven settlements in the world. For no matter how thick its walls, skilled its archers, or brave its knights, few settlements have ever withstood a full-scale onslaught of orcs. Check out our sponsor Start Playing! The first gnolls arose from hyenas that fed on flesh tainted by the Abyss. Their corruption and violence delighted the demon lord Yeenoghu, who encouraged their numbers and spread them across the multiverse. Ever since, gnolls have been the cackling servants of Yeenoghu, existing to cause ruin and to feast on what remains. Feral, demon-worshiping marauders, gnolls attack communities along the borderlands without warning and slaughter without mercy, all in the name of the demon lord Yeenoghu. Among the more peculiar creatures in the world, formless oozes squeeze through dank underground passages, mindlessly feeding on creatures and objects that dissolve in their acidic bodies. Similar to a goopy melding of vermin and natural hazard, oozes are a nuisance and a danger. Check out our sponsor Tabletone! Created as soldiers for a war that spelled the end of an age, warforged are artificial beings that display a humanoid level of intelligence and self-awareness. To look upon one is to see an instrument of destruction, a heartless killing machine, a siege engine in the shape of a man. Check out our sponsor Steinhardt's Guide to the Eldritch Hunt! Krakens. They rule the mightiest kingdoms, lightless trenches of crushing pressures where the sun never touches, unreachable seas that writhe in anger, jagged depths under sheer black cliffs. Their home is alien, elemental, and unforgiving. And here they are masters. Cruel geniuses possessing vast strength, they wait in the dark, weaving their plots, slowly considering their next abomination, their next move in an endless evil game of vast complexity. Not merely hulking mindless brutes nor cathedrals of flesh given fury, but sadists, torturers, and unspeakable terrors, thinking goliaths of calculating hate. Check out our sponsor Tabletone! In Barovia, the night is a curse. With the dying of the light, the howls of wolves and shrieks of raven swarms echo through the dismal valleys and wicked souls slip from the darkened spires of Castle Ravenloft to work the will of an immortal overlord. For this is the realm of the first vampire, Count Strahd von Zarovich. And his depravities have doomed him and countless generations to endlessly repeating cycles of obsession and despair. The Trolls of D&D are a perfect ideation of a monster. Cruel, vicious, merciless. Their warped bi-pedal shape is both grotesque and alien to behold and yet, human enough to make them that much more terrifying. The aboleth are perhaps the least well known and the most misunderstood of all the species which inhabit the Underdark. The reason for this is very simple — the aboleth want it that way.
