Is it NUJV or NVUJ? Well it depends what side of the Atlantic you live on and if you own a Parlophone or Capitol records edition of Help! The Beatles 5th album released in the summer of 1965. As with A Hard Day's Night 12 month before. This album was part film soundtrack album, part? Well, new material. It's easy to dismiss this album for that very reason. But it clearly is a stepping stone between the early 60's mop tops and the mid 60's serious, highly creative Beatles. Now under the influence of Bob Dylan and the early West Coast scene, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Ticket To Ride, the title track and Paul's solo recording Yesterday, demonstrate that John, Paul, George and Ringo were clearly on an upward trajectory. In the summer of 1964 The Beatles released A Hard Day's Night in the UK. Their first album to contain purely Lennon and McCartney compositions. But by the Autumn of that year John, Paul, George and Ringo had now achieved global fame. Tours of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America, resulted in them having less and less time for song writing. Creativity and time in the studio was severally restricted, due to other commitments. In this episode we take a deep dive into their fourth album, Beatles For Sale. And uncover why it is tale of two halves (or should that be two sides). The album includes some of their best song writing from the pre-Rubber Soul era. But it also includes too much filler. There were 8 months between The Beatles debut album, Please Please Me and it's follow up With The Beatles. A further 8 months and A Hard Day's Night arrived in stores. By the summer of 1964 John, Paul, George and Ringo were household names, not only in the UK, but globally! This third UK album was a first. Not only a film soundtrack, but also their first album to contain purely Lennon & McCartney compositions. Until now there had been no corresponding album releases between Parlophone records in the UK and Capitol in America. Finally in the states there is a soundtrack album sharing the same title, but that's where the similarity ends. It was not even released by Capitol. Exactly 8 months to the day after their debut album 'Please Please Me' was released in the UK. The Beatles second album 'With The Beatles' landed in record stores nationwide. Not only a significant day in the groups history, but an unforgettable day news wise. As it was 22 November 1963 that American president JFK was assimilated. An event which as we discuss in this weeks episode, could have been the reason why Capitol records finally took up distribution rights to the band. 11 February 1962 has become a legendary day in the history of Abbey Road. The recording studio located on a residential street in north London. For on that day, John, Paul, George and Ringo recorded 11* songs for there debut album, Please Please Me. In this weeks episode we start a new series taking a deep dive into The Beatles album catalogue, from Please Please Me released in March 1963, through to Let It Be in May 1970. Following the tragedy of December 1980, Yoko took control of her husbands audio, visual and written legacy. Producing a series of releases which would not only keep John's name out there, but also carry on his message of 'Peace'. In the Spring of 1961 The Beatles made their first professional recordings under the guidance of Bert Kaempfert. The German orchestra leader, composer and A&R man for Polydor records. Kaempfert was looking for musicians to back his recent signing Tony Sheridan. John, Paul, George and Pete Best would record two sessions for Polydor. If you play all 22 original UK singles in chronological sequence, you witness first hand the creativity of John, Paul, George and Ringo. That progress was not a smooth climb. There are some huge leaps which can be demonstrated by the singles Strawberry Fields Forever, Hey Jude and Let It Be. The groups 7th single, A Hard Days Night, indicated that they were starting to move away from there 'Beat Group' sound. With its strident guitar chord intro, it demonstrated a new level of creativity being explored within the walls of Abbey Road studios. In August 1968, The Beatles Apple records label made their debut with their 'First Four' single releases. Mary Hopkin - Those Were The Days, Jackie Lomax - Sour Milk Sea, Black Dyke Mills Band - Thingumybob and The Beatles own new single Hey Jude. Over the next couple of years Paul, George and Ringo would embrace working with new talent that the label discovered. Writing songs, playing on recording and producing material for many of the Apple artists. The 'success' or 'failure' of the label is subjective. Yes, they had a lot of behind the scenes issues, especially with the arrival of Klein. But they did have chart success and discovered James Taylor, Badfinger, Hot Chocolate, Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston, among others. A couple of weeks back my daytime job took me to Wallasey, or more precisely New Brighton. Formerly the location of the Tower Ballroom, where The Beatles played 27 times during there formative years. Seeing the site of this long gone venue, got me thinking about other venues around the UK which have a Beatles connection. When Paul, George, Ringo and the John Lennon estate won control of the groups back catalogue in late 1989. It marked a changing point in the way The Beatles back catalogue was managed. Gone were the themed compilations from EMI, Rock 'N' Roll Music, Love Songs, Reel Music, etc. Instead we have been treated (on the whole) to a series of currated released designed for both the casual music lover and the die hard fan. Around the spring of each year The Beatles rumour mill starts to gossip with what Apple are going to give us this year. The Hoffner violin bass is an iconic symbol of Paul's days with The Beatles. Sometime during the 60's, or was it the 70's Paul's original 1961 Hoffner disappeared. Lost for 50 years, until some pure detective work by a few individuals discovered where it was hiding. Back in episode 20 of Fixing A Hole, my co-presenter and producer Mark declared that his favourite Beatles album is Revolver. That's the UK 14 track edition, not the edited 11 song Capitol version from American which I discovered back in 1975. I on the other hand have avoided this question, as depending on what day of the week it is, my favourite could be one of two, or three, or four.....
