Tam Callaghan sits down with book coach Kylie Zeal, her former coach and now friend, for the first of two conversations. Kylie spent around a decade as an executive coach before moving into book coaching, and she works with writers on both fiction and nonfiction. They start with how they met. Tam came to Kylie wanting to write nonfiction, and in their first call Kylie suggested something she’d only ever said to one other client: this might be a novel. What followed was a lovely first chapter, a second chapter that didn’t land, 36,000 words written in nine days to pitch the book, and two publisher responses that were far more encouraging than they first sounded. They also get into how Kylie meets people through LinkedIn, why they both avoid the news, and what makes a coach good. For Kylie, confidence comes from knowing you don’t need all the answers. You need to ask good questions, listen well and leave the work with the person who owns it. She talks about adapting to writers who plot and writers who make it up as they go, giving objective feedback, and a client who took eight sessions to see that her book had the wrong title. A generous, practical conversation for anyone with a book in them, or anyone who coaches. In this episode: How Tam found Kylie on LinkedIn, and why the fit felt right Why Kylie invites every new connection to a conversation Avoiding the news and finding the good stories instead Choosing fiction, and the freedom it gave Tam Plotters vs pantsers, and the risk of writing yourself into a corner Getting hard feedback on chapter 2, and why it helped Pitching a book and reading publisher responses Why your first book might be for you Coaching as asking questions, listening and holding space Adapting to different writers and giving objective feedback Coachability, patience and sitting with not knowing Writing a book teaches you what you think Find Kylie Zeal: https://www.kyliezeal.com Part 2 of this conversation: Coming Soon! Tam went to see Jebediah: Are We OK?, the new documentary marking the band’s 30th anniversary, and came away wanting to say thank you. This episode is part movie review, part love letter to a band that soundtracked some of the happiest years of her young life in Perth. She remembers seeing them leap about on stage at Planet Nightclub on Charles Street, and how much it meant to learn that the band were having just as good a time as the audience. She reflects on what each member brought, from Vanessa’s joy and artistry to Brett finding a way onto the stage despite hating it, something Tam knows well from years of training. Above all, she’s struck by a group that kept choosing joy over financial success and stayed committed to one another for 30 years. There’s also a personal thank you to Kevin Mitchell. Tam walked down the aisle to Don’t You Think It’s Time, the song he wrote as Bob Evans, and this is her chance to finally tell him. You don’t need to be a fan to get something out of the film. But if you grew up in Australia, and especially in Perth, it comes with a great memory lane bonus. In this episode: Seeing Jebediah: Are We OK? and meeting director Arlo Dean Cook Memories of Jebediah at Planet Nightclub Youth, freedom and looking back on a happy time A band that started, and stayed, for the love of it A 30-year bond that looks a lot like a marriage Rethinking Vanessa and gratitude for each band member Life’s ups and downs, and the film’s harder themes Brett, stage anxiety and finding a way to go on anyway Kevin Mitchell, Bob Evans and the wedding song Why the film works even if you’ve never heard the band The Molly Meldrum link to Do Yourself a Favour Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan sits down with Tanya Hallett from TIPT (Trauma-Informed Practice Training) for a conversation that starts with a Year 9 student working 30 hours a week to help his single mum pay bills, and ends somewhere most leadership conversations never reach. Tanya has spent most of her teaching career in low socio-economic schools, and that experience shapes everything about how she sees the workplace. She and Tam dig into what naive meritocracy actually costs, why the "everyone gets a fair shot" story doesn't hold up, and how a trauma-informed lens replaces judgement with curiosity in a way that makes leaders genuinely more effective. There's also a grounded, useful stretch on how leaders can acknowledge the limits of their own understanding without losing credibility, and why that honesty is actually the foundation of trust. Warm, honest, and the kind of conversation that lingers. In this episode: The Year 9 student working 30 hours a week and what it reveals about inequality Why the "everyone gets a fair shot" story doesn't hold up Tanya's passion for working in low socio-economic schools The limits of privilege and why sheltered perspectives create poor leaders Luck, meritocracy, and the Veritasium research on success Why naive meritocracy causes real harm in workplaces Trauma-informed practice: replacing judgement with curiosity How to communicate with care without losing authority The interest rate example: leaders speaking with false confidence How to acknowledge the limits of your understanding and build trust doing it Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan watched a beloved former West Coast Eagles player give an honest, vulnerable interview about why he left the club. Then she read the comments. And something clicked. This episode starts with sport and ends somewhere much deeper. Tam uses the Tom Barras interview and the flood of bitter, abusive responses it attracted to explore what Peter Crone's idea that anger covers hurt actually looks like in real life — and then turns that lens on herself, her own history of sports tribalism, and one of the most personally honest reflections she's recorded. It connects directly to the previous episode on keyboard warriors, but takes the idea further: what does it cost you to stay in the pain of being right, and what would it mean to choose differently? Raw, funny in places, and one of the more quietly courageous things Tam has put out. In this episode: What the AFL Grand Final is, for those not in Australia Tom Barras: why the abusive comments about him revealed something important Peter Crone's idea that anger is always covering hurt How Tam's own West Coast Eagles tribalism changed over two years The emotional response that surprised her during the Grand Final Being right vs being vulnerable: what each one costs The Great White Whale: an honest reflection on her marriage Which pain do you choose? Tanya Hallett from TIPT (Trauma-Informed Practice Training) returns for a new series with Tam Callaghan, this time focused on one of the most practical skills a manager or colleague can have: de-escalation. Tanya brings a background that's unusual for a corporate trainer — years in classrooms with students who were already dysregulated before they walked through the door. She opens with a story about a child who told the principal "I don't trust you" mid-crisis, and how reading that correctly changed everything. That instinct for reading what's actually happening beneath the surface is what she now brings to workplace settings. In this first part they cover why escalation spreads (the limbic system and contagion), what happens in the brain during an amygdala hijack, why tone and body language matter far more than the words we choose, and the practical steps anyone can take to manage themselves first before trying to manage the situation. There's also a useful stretch on pausing difficult conversations properly, using honest language rather than throwaway lines, and how to have better EAP conversations that actually land. In this episode: Tanya's business growth and the tough decision to step away from teaching The child distrust story and what it teaches about reading intentions How escalation spreads through a room via the limbic system The amygdala hijack: what happens when the prefrontal cortex shuts down Communication basics: the 7% rule and why tone and body language dominate Practical de-escalation steps: managing yourself before managing others Grounding techniques and capacity checking How to pause a difficult conversation without making it worse Honest language vs throwaway lines How to have EAP conversations that actually help Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Being right is the self-esteem of the desperate. That's the line Tam Callaghan landed on after thinking about one of the most requested topics she's received: why do people become keyboard warriors, and what do you do about it? Inspired by a conversation with a popular online creator who regularly receives hate comments on completely non-provocative content, Tam digs into what's actually driving this behaviour. She breaks it down into three groups: people who have an opinion and share it thoughtlessly because the screen removes the sense of talking to a real human being; Karens and Keiths driven by entitlement and a deep need to feel seen; and a smaller group with genuine psychological disorders including narcissism, sadism, and psychopathy. She also turns the lens on herself, because the need to be right when we're feeling insecure isn't unique to trolls. It's just the same impulse in a different context. Practical, compassionate, and more nuanced than the topic usually gets. In this episode: Why "being right is the self-esteem of the desperate" applies to all of us Chris Lapping's experience of online hate and what it prompted Why online distance makes people forget they're talking to a human being Group 1: opinions, thoughtlessness, and what to do Group 2: Karens and Keiths, entitlement, and the need to feel seen Group 3: narcissism, sadism, psychopathy, and how to spot them Practical coping strategies: love, boundaries, and when to block Societal isolation and why online cruelty is getting worse Why nuance and compassion are still the right response Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Part two of Tam Callaghan's conversation with Kate Fandry picks up where they left off, diving into the diagnosis itself, what it felt like to finally have an answer, and the grief that often comes with a late diagnosis even when it's a relief. Kate shares the moment she told her mum over lunch ("of course you do"), the school story that reframed a lifetime of self-blame, and what it actually took to go from suspecting she had ADHD to getting formally assessed. They then move into OCD: what it looks like in daily life, the blueberry example that perfectly illustrates decision paralysis, and the medication that changed everything. There's also an honest conversation about the stigma around psychiatric medication, why choosing medication is an act of self-kindness rather than weakness, and what quality of life actually looks like when treatment works. Part 1: Late-Diagnosis ADHD: From Burnout to Breakthrough - https://www.podbean.com/eas/pb-5g6w5-1b424ec In this episode: The ADHD quote that sums up the late diagnosis experience perfectly "If you do well at school, they just let you raw dog ADHD for the rest of your life" The school window story and what it actually meant The grief of late diagnosis and why it's valid Hiding struggles and finally telling parents OCD alongside ADHD: how it presents and what it costs The blueberry example: OCD and decision paralysis in everyday life OCD medication and the life-changing relief it brought ADHD medication: focus, sleep, and what shifted The stigma around medication and why it needs to change Choosing medication as self-kindness Why relationships matter more than Western success markers Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan sits down with her friend and former colleague Kate Fandry for a wide-ranging, deeply honest conversation about late ADHD diagnosis, what it actually feels like to finally have an explanation for a lifetime of experiences, and how Kate is channelling everything she's learned into a brand new career as a celebrant. Kate was diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, and as a Highly Sensitive Person after an epic burnout that had been building for years. In this first part they cover what the signs looked like in childhood, how hyperactivity presents differently in girls, what Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria actually feels like day to day, how to manage sensitivity without shutting yourself down, and why so many neurodiverse people are drawn to each other. They also get into managing news consumption, parenting a sensitive child, environmental sensitivities, and the pivotal moments that led Kate to retrain as a celebrant. Warm, funny, and genuinely eye-opening whether you have a diagnosis or simply recognise yourself in parts of what Kate describes. Part two gets practical. In this episode Tam Callaghan walks through the gratitude practices she actually uses, including a twist on the classic three-things exercise that most people miss, and why acknowledging your own role in creating the good in your life is just as important as noticing it. She shares two personal examples, choosing Luna the dog after a year of persistence, and saying yes to her dream treehouse, as illustrations of what it looks like to own your wins rather than just feel lucky. She also gets into hedonic adaptation and why we stop enjoying what we've worked hard for, the Metta loving-kindness practice, and a striking story about a business success that was missed entirely because the moment wasn't absorbed. One practical exercise to do tonight, and a genuine argument for why you're probably already living the life you once prayed for. Tam sits down with her friend and colleague Kate de Jong to talk about Kate's upcoming book, The Wisdumb Way: A Simple Path to Emotional Intelligence Through the Power of Paradox, co-written with EQ expert James Brydon and relationship counsellor Mauro Davide. The conversation starts with a statistic that is hard to shake: 95% of people think they're self-aware, but research suggests only 10 to 15% actually are. Kate calls the rare few who genuinely develop this skill unicorns, borrowing the term from Dr Tasha Eurich, and The Wisdumb Way is her attempt to help more people get there. They cover what self-awareness actually means (internal and external), the difference between genuine emotional intelligence and spiritual bypassing, the Dunning-Kruger effect and Mount Stupid, and the three core qualities at the heart of the book: curiosity, vulnerability, and comfort with uncertainty. Kate also walks through the Harrison Assessment's 12 paradox scales and why being extreme in any direction creates its own problems. Warm, wide-ranging, and genuinely useful for anyone who wants to lead better, parent better, or simply understand themselves more clearly. In this episode: The self-awareness statistic that will make you think twice Internal vs external self-awareness and why both matter What a 360 or LSI feedback process actually reveals Why emotional intelligence matters in leadership, parenting and relationships The danger of spiritual bypassing when doing inner work Mount Stupid, the Dunning-Kruger effect, and where most of us get stuck Wisdumb as paradox: being wise and dumb at the same time The Harrison Assessment and the 12 paradox scales The three core qualities: curiosity, vulnerability, comfort with uncertainty Applying the Wisdumb Way in real conversations What it costs organisations and individuals to lack self-awareness Book format, exercises, and launch plans The Wisdumb Way by Kate de Jong, James Brydon and Mauro Davide: [link when available] Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan knows you've heard the word gratitude too many times. She felt the same way. This episode is her making the case that it's worth pushing through that resistance, and explaining why it actually works, not in a spiritual bypassing way, but in a genuinely practical, neurological, life-changing way. Drawing on Shawn Achor's research, Rick Hanson's work on absorbing positive experiences, her own VIA character strengths results, and a striking personal story about manifestation, Tam walks through three reasons gratitude matters, why most of us have the order backwards, and what it looks like to build gratitude as a daily practice rather than a mood or a mindset. In part two of their conversation on workplace bullying, Tam Callaghan and Tanya Hallett from TIPT get into the harder question: once you know there's a problem, what do you actually do? They pick up where part one left off, starting with the 'money in the bank' concept and why goodwill built before a crisis is the thing that makes everything else possible. From there they move into what happens when a harmful employee has been left unmanaged for years, how fawning and placating responses develop in teams that have never seen anyone held accountable, and what a genuine team reset looks like when a new manager comes in. Tanya walks through a detailed case study, a respectful behaviours charter in practice, how to document incidents properly, and how to use company values and policy as the foundation for enforcing standards. There's also a rich conversation about generational change, what younger workers expect from their managers, and why seeing potential in people is one of the most powerful performance tools available. Practical, experienced, and exactly what organisations need more of. Workplace bullying pt 2: https://www.podbean.com/eas/pb-krwy4-1b1acb6 Narcissistic Bullies: https://www.podbean.com/eas/pb-arzzg-1af7f01 Tanya Hallett from TIPT returns to talk about workplace bullying, one of the most common and costly issues she deals with, and one of the most misunderstood. In this first of two conversations, Tam and Tanya cover what bullying actually looks like in practice, what it isn't, and what organisations are getting badly wrong. They get into the pattern Tanya sees most: a long-serving employee, a new manager with no contextual understanding, a clash that escalates fast, and a workplace that fails to step in. They also cover the legal obligations organisations have around reasonable adjustments and psychosocial safety, and why ignorance is genuinely no excuse. There's a detailed case study on an employee with vertigo, a clear breakdown of the difference between bullying and performance management, and practical discussion of what quick and effective resolution can actually look like, including why trust built before a crisis is the thing that makes everything else easier. In this episode: The most common stories Tanya hears from clients about workplace bullying Why new managers are so often the trigger Legal obligations: what the Fair Work Act actually requires Bullying vs performance management: how to tell the difference Case study: the employee with vertigo and what should have happened Workplace support plans and mental health care plans in practice Trust, emotional intelligence and trauma-informed leadership What a good quick resolution actually involves HR and WHS: who owns what when it comes to psychosocial risk The money-in-the-bank analogy for building goodwill before you need it A preview of what's coming in part two: the 'naughty' staff member Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan had a realisation that made her feel a bit silly at first, and then completely changed how she understood her own anxiety. She was choosing it. Not consciously, but choosing it all the same. In this episode she unpacks the idea that anxiety can sometimes be a way of avoiding responsibility for choices we've made, and why staying in worry feels safer than sitting with the discomfort of ownership. She also gets honest about using worry as a hobby, what happens creatively when she chooses action instead, and why compassion for yourself and others is the piece that makes the whole thing actually work. In this episode: The realisation: why she was choosing anxiety over responsibility The Upside Down: anxiety as a way of avoiding ownership Which pain do you choose? Tam Callaghan did the brave thing. She wrote the letter, had the hard conversation, cleared up a long-standing issue with someone important to her, and got the resolution she'd hoped for. And then she waited to feel great. It didn't quite work out that way. In this episode Tam shares what actually happened in the days after a genuine breakthrough, including the unexpected ego backlash, the self-doubt that crept in, and why healing doesn't always feel like healing in the moment. She also talks through the identity protections and parts that fire up when we grow, why discomfort after doing the right thing is normal, and what a quote from Chris Lapping about failure helped her see differently. Raw, honest, and one of the more useful things Tam has recorded about the messy reality of doing inner work. In this episode: Resolving a long-standing friendship issue, and what it took The Big Kahuna: writing a letter to an important person in her life The waiting anxiety and what happened when the response came Why she didn't feel as good as she expected afterward Identity and ego: why parts of us fight change even when it's good Chris Lapping's reframe on failure and what it unlocked A post-recording update with the full story Why the action is still worth it, even when the feeling lags behind Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! They're charming to leadership, devastating to their team, and almost impossible to catch. In this episode, Tam Callaghan sits down with workplace expert Tanya Hallett to talk about narcissistic bullies at work: what they actually are, why organisations keep missing them, and what to do if you're dealing with one. Tanya breaks down the key difference between a standard workplace bully and a narcissistic one, why the second category is in a completely different league, and how the DAVO pattern (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim Order) leaves targets confused, doubting themselves, and unable to articulate what just happened. She also covers what gaslighting actually looks like on the ground, why documentation matters more than you think, and what your real options are if you're in the middle of this. This is one of the most practically useful episodes on workplace harm the show has done. Whether you're a leader trying to understand what's happening in your team, or someone trying to survive a difficult situation, this conversation gives you real tools. In this episode: The difference between a bully and a narcissistic bully, and why it matters The trail of destruction: what happens to teams when one arrives Why narcissistic bullies are so hard for leaders to spot DAVO explained: deny, attack, reverse victim order How gaslighting erodes confidence and psychological safety What leaders should actually be watching for Thinking like a lawyer: how to build your evidence Practical self-protection: documentation, written follow-ups, limiting verbal contact Your options as a target: cope, escalate, or exit The real cost to organisations that ignore this Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Do you want to be Bette or Barbara? If you know the movie Beaches, you know the question. Bette Midler's character is the star, the one in the spotlight. Barbara Hershey's is quieter, less visible, deeply loving and deeply loved. In this episode, Tam Callaghan has been wrestling with which one she wants to be, and the answer surprised her. For most of her life Tam's ego has measured her worth through achievement, recognition and applause. But after reading a post about kindness and sitting with what she's contributed over the last 20 or 30 years, she had a genuinely softening realisation: she's been far more Barbara than she ever gave herself credit for. This episode also covers the backup singer dream, the difference between creating from ego and creating from joy, and why peace and self-love aren't distractions from the mission. They are the mission. Plus, a practical exercise worth doing – Writing a list of 50 things you've done well since the start of the year, split across what you've achieved and what you've done for others. Warm, honest, and one of Tam's most personal episodes yet. In this episode: The Bette vs Barbara question and what it revealed Why the kindness we show others often goes uncounted in our own minds Ego achievement vs genuine contribution: measuring life differently The backup singer dream and what it says about wanting just enough attention Separating worthiness from what you create Why self-love is the mission, not a distraction from it The list of 50 things and how to do it Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Authenticity gets thrown around constantly in workplaces, but what does it actually mean to bring your real self to work without oversharing, burning bridges, or pretending the bottom line doesn't exist? Tam Callaghan sits down with celebrity chef, LinkedIn writer and longtime friend Alvin Quah to dig into one of the most overused and underexplored ideas in modern work culture. Alvin brings a perspective that's hard to find: someone who has lived and led in corporate environments, left them, and can now speak with honesty about what psychological safety, authenticity and values alignment actually feel like from the inside. Together, he and Tam cover what it costs when people can't be themselves at work, why a great boss can make a broken company survivable, and why soft skills are foundational, not optional extras. The conversation also gets into culture, generational difference, introverts in the workplace, hiring for team fit, and what it looks like when trust and friendship exist in a professional setting. Warm, thoughtful, and the kind of conversation that makes you reconsider a few things. In this episode: What authenticity actually means, and what it doesn't Filters, code-switching and the layers people wear at work Why psychological safety often lives or dies with one person: your boss Edited authenticity: being real without being raw Generations, culture and making space for introverts How Alvin thinks about hiring and constructive conflict Why soft skills are the most foundational skills of all Values, leadership and being genuinely valuable at work Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! What do you do when there's no plan, no clear path, and no idea if what you're doing is heading anywhere? In this episode, Tam Callaghan gets honest about the extended period of unknowing she's been living through and what she's learning from it. This one covers the ego structures we build to protect ourselves from disappointment, what happens when those structures fall away, and why the mission she thought she was on turned out to be something else entirely. Tam talks about the difference between chasing external validation and actually finding peace in yourself, why self-love isn't selfish, and what it looks like to just keep taking the next step that feels right without knowing where it leads. It also includes one of her favourite Hugh Laurie quotes, which is worth the listen on its own. Raw, personal, and genuinely useful for anyone sitting with uncertainty right now. In this episode: The ego structure of 'one day I'll be famous' and what happened when it collapsed Why external recognition will never be enough, and what to do instead The bridge of cringe: walking into the fog and staying in motion Why self-love is the foundation, not the reward Choosing a context that works for you rather than against you Doing the next right thing when there's no plan Hugh Laurie on readiness, and why now is as good a time as any Do Yourself a Favour is available on YouTube: https://linktr.ee/doyourselfafavour_podcast Join the conversation! Tam Callaghan sits down with her friend and accredited dietitian Jess Burvill, the person behind the wildly useful Instagram page Daily Serve Nutrition, to talk about how a career in advertising, a mid-life study pivot, and a clear no-judgment voice turned into one of Australia's fastest-growing nutrition accounts. Jess came to dietetics as a second career after years in advertising agencies, and it turns out those two worlds have more in common than you'd think. They cover how she applies advertising principles to nutrition content, why simple and useful always wins, what the growth from zero to 171,000 followers in 18 months actually looked like from the inside, and how she handles the less glamorous parts, including trolls, , From the supermarket job that helped shape her thesis focus, and what it takes to study full-time through COVID while working, to her current reality of success, opportunity and truly hard work.
