Fatherhood in Focus by The Modern Fatherhood Club is the podcast for new dads, expectant fathers and modern men who want to prepare for fatherhood, not just react to it. Hosted by Aidan O'Driscoll, father of two, speaker and founder of The Modern Fatherhood Club, this podcast exists for the dad who is doing everything he is supposed to do, but still feels stretched, distracted, under pressure or unsure where he fits. Modern fatherhood has changed. Preparation hasn’t. Today’s dads are expected to be present, supportive, emotionally steady, ambitious, involved at home and still able to provide. But too many men enter fatherhood without the tools, language or support to navigate the mental, emotional and practical weight of becoming a dad. This is not fluffy parenting advice. This is fatherhood preparation. Each episode brings honest reflection, real stories and practical tools to help you become the father your children need and the man your family deserves. We talk about the things many dads carry but rarely say out loud: The pressure to provide without becoming absent. The identity shift that happens when life is no longer just about you. The mental load, burnout and emotional strain that can build beneath the surface. The relationship tension that appears when you are trying to hold everything together. The importance of presence, patience, confidence, resilience and connection. The role you play in shaping how your children feel, grow and remember their childhood. The Modern Fatherhood Club exists to help fathers prepare, grow and thrive through honest conversations, practical education, community, free resources, The Ultimate New Dad Toolkit and programmes designed to support men through one of life’s most important transitions. Because your kids do not need a perfect dad. They need a prepared one. Subscribe to Fatherhood in Focus and start building the clarity, confidence and connection you need to lead your family well. The father you become shapes the childhood they remember.

I was there for my son. I loved him. I desperately wanted to help him. But there were moments when I wasn't what he needed. When your child is struggling, being physically present isn't always the same as making them feel understood, safe and supported. In Episode 73 of Answer Me This, I talk honestly about one of the hardest periods we've experienced as a family. Henry was struggling after an experience that affected his confidence, his anxiety and his willingness to do things he'd previously loved. I wanted a solution. I wanted to fix it. And when I couldn't, frustration started creeping in. This episode isn't about blaming a child who was struggling. Quite the opposite. It's about acknowledging something much harder: Sometimes our response as dads becomes part of the struggle. What you'll hear in this episode: Why loving your child doesn't automatically mean you understand what they're experiencing What happens when Dad's frustration meets a child's fear or overwhelm Why your intentions and your child's experience of you can be very different The pressure a struggling child can place on the whole family Why your partner needs support while you're both trying to support your child What other children in the home may quietly experience Why guilt alone won't repair the relationship How listening, ownership, apology, support and patience can help you find your way back Why this matters There are going to be moments in fatherhood when you don't have the answer. Your child may be anxious. Hurt. Angry. Frightened. Struggling at school. Losing confidence. Going through something you don't understand. And you may be struggling too. The challenge isn't becoming the perfect dad who always knows what to do. It's being prepared to look at your response, understand what your child may actually be experiencing and adjust when what you're doing isn't helping. Answer Me This When your child is struggling, are you what they need? And perhaps the harder question: Are there moments where your reaction has accidentally become part of their struggle? Tell me in the comments. If this hit, share it with a dad who needs a circuit breaker. Expecting a baby? Get The Ultimate New Dad Tool Kit Feeling burnt out or stretched as a dad? Your children know you as Dad. But do they actually know you? Modern fatherhood can easily become a constant list of responsibilities: work, school runs, activities, homework, meals, problems and keeping the family moving. And somewhere inside all that usefulness, the man underneath Dad can quietly disappear. In Episode 72 of Answer Me This, I explore what it means to let our children know who we really are without asking them to carry adult problems that were never theirs to hold. What You’ll Learn Why being useful can slowly replace being connected How children experience the man we actually show them, not the man we intend to be Why laughter, interests and ordinary conversations matter How to let your children see what brings you to life The difference between healthy honesty and making children carry adult emotions Why connection does not need a perfect setting or a huge conversation How to create more room for your children to know you while remaining completely themselves Why letting children see you grow can help them understand growth in themselves Why This Matters Our children already know something about us. They know our tone. Our patience. How we react when interrupted, how we treat their mum and how we behave when pressure arrives. But that does not necessarily mean they know the fuller version of us. The playful version, the curious, warm version, the version who has stories, interests, mistakes, values and something that brings him to life. They can know you without carrying you and they can see you becoming without believing you are supposed to be the finished article. Answer Me This Do your kids actually know who you are? And are they getting to know you, or mostly getting to know the man managing everything around them? Expecting a baby? Get The Ultimate New Dad Tool Kit Feeling burnt out or stretched as a dad? Ambition is not the enemy. But what happens when the future starts getting more of you than your family does? As dads, we want to provide, build, protect and create opportunities for our children. But sometimes the chase for a better future slowly takes us away from the very people we say we are doing it for. In Episode 71 of Answer Me This, I ask one of the hardest questions ambitious fathers need to answer. What You’ll Learn Why ambition itself is not the problem How dads can confuse pressure with provision What your children learn from what consistently gets your attention Why the version of you your family receives matters more than your intentions How work, goals and distraction can quietly erode connection Why “waiting until life calms down” is a dangerous strategy What you can stop doing to create more space for your family How to build something meaningful without disappearing from the life you already have Why This Matters Your children don’t experience your priorities in theory. They experience them in real time. They feel whether you are listening. Whether you are available. Whether work can interrupt family, but family can never interrupt work. Whether they get the best of you or whatever is left. And they don’t just inherit what you provide. They inherit what you prioritise. Answer Me This Will your kids always come second to your ambition? And: Are you building a life they get to live inside, or a future they keep having to wait for? Expecting a baby? What if the behaviour you're trying to stop is actually your child trying to tell you something? When our children answer back, push boundaries, refuse, shout or demand control, it's easy to move straight into correction mode. But sometimes behaviour is the signal, not the whole story. This week, I look at one of the hardest challenges I've faced with my eldest son: understanding the difference between behaviour that needs correcting and behaviour that may be asking for connection. What You'll Learn Why family life can become functional without us noticing How children sometimes communicate emotional needs through behaviour Why correction mode can make an already difficult moment worse How your own triggers and lack of capacity influence your response Why children can fight hardest for attention when they feel disconnected The difference between connection before correction and avoiding boundaries Why repair after getting it wrong strengthens rather than weakens fatherhood leadership Why This Matters Children need rules and they need structure. They need boundaries and leadership. But they also need to feel seen. Because when we only respond to the behaviour, we can miss the child underneath it. Sometimes the anger is overwhelm. Sometimes the disrespect is a child who doesn't yet know how to ask for connection. Sometimes the fight for control is really: See me. Hear me. I need you. The goal isn't to stop correcting our children. It's to become better at understanding what we're actually correcting. Answer Me This: When your child pushes your patience to the edge, are they really misbehaving? or Are they asking you to see them? Expecting a baby? You finish work. But has work finished with you? Because your children don't see the deadline, difficult conversation or financial pressure you're carrying. They simply experience the Dad who walks through the door. In this episode of Answer Me This, I'm exploring one of the hardest transitions in modern fatherhood: moving from the pressures of work, ambition and responsibility into the emotional presence our families need from us. What You'll Learn Why there can feel like two different dads inside the same man How work stress and fatigue quietly affect connection with your children Why your child's behaviour may not be the real reason your patience is thin What emotional regulation looks like when you're genuinely exhausted Why ambition isn't the enemy, but unmanaged pressure can be How to create a simple Threshold Moment before entering family life Why repair is part of leadership when the wrong version of Dad shows up Why This Matters Your children don't know everything you're carrying. They don't see the deadline. The difficult conversation. The financial pressure. The uncertainty about your career. They simply know: Dad is home. And the version of you who enters that room influences the atmosphere they experience. This isn't about removing ambition or pretending pressure doesn't exist. It's about learning to carry pressure without making your family pay for something they didn't create. Answer Me This When your children see you at the end of the day, which Dad walks through the door? And: Have you finished work, or has work finished with you? Expecting a baby? Modern fatherhood asks men to provide, protect, parent, support, communicate, lead and stay present. But what is all that pressure doing to us? Because our children don't only inherit what we intentionally teach them. They also inherit the patterns we've never faced ourselves. What You'll Learn Why modern fatherhood creates an identity shift few men are prepared for What children silently learn from our relationship with pressure, work and achievement Why unresolved emotions don't necessarily stay outside the front door How approval, anger, avoidance and self doubt can become patterns our children repeat Why provision and protection are no longer enough Five questions every father should ask about the example he's setting How confronting yourself can change what the next generation inherits Why This Matters Your children don't experience the father you intend to be. They experience the man who actually walks through the front door. Your tone. Your nervous system. Your relationship with work. How you respond when things go wrong. How you treat yourself. How you repair. Children don't inherit perfection. They inherit repetition. Answer Me This What is modern fatherhood doing to you? Do you ever feel like you’re parenting your children while simultaneously having to justify your choices to everyone around you? When grandparents, parents or extended family disagree with how you raise your children, the pressure can quietly change the way you show up as Dad. What You’ll Learn Why judgement from older generations can create pressure inside your own family How to respect your parents without repeating every parenting choice they made Why you and your partner need agreed parenting non negotiables How to distinguish useful advice from interference Why constantly defending your parenting can affect your children How to set boundaries without creating unnecessary family conflict What your children learn by watching you handle disagreement Why This Matters The people who raised us often have valuable experience to offer. But they raised children in a different time. Your responsibility isn't to keep every generation comfortable. It's to build the environment your family needs now. You can respect where you came from without handing somebody else the steering wheel. Answer Me This Where are you staying silent to avoid conflict but creating more pressure inside your own family? Your children need rules. But do those rules make them trust your leadership, or simply fear the consequence of ignoring you? This episode explores boundaries, discipline and what leadership at home actually looks like when your children push back. What You’ll Learn Why leadership begins before a boundary gets tested Why unclear and inconsistent rules create unnecessary conflict How connection gives your correction more weight Why the boundary can be right while your delivery is wrong How to hold a standard without attacking your child Why the rules in your home must apply to Dad too How repair strengthens rather than weakens your authority Why This Matters Obedience can make a room quiet. Trust shapes a home. Our children need boundaries, consequences and standards, but they also need to experience a father whose leadership feels clear, consistent and safe. Because they aren't only learning your rules. They're learning what leadership feels like. Answer Me This Are your rules building trust, or are they just demanding obedience? Are you becoming a better father, or exhausting yourself trying to become every version of the man you're told you should be? This episode is about identity, comparison and why your children may need the real you far more than they need another improved version of you. What You'll Hear Why achievement can become a substitute for identity How comparison quietly disconnects fathers from their families Why your strengths matter more than becoming good at everything What children actually need to see in Dad Five reasons to start trusting yourself Why becoming the right man matters more than becoming the perfect one Why This Matters Modern dads are surrounded by messages telling us to do more, earn more, heal more and become more. But fatherhood doesn't demand perfection. It demands honesty, adaptability and presence. Your family doesn't need every version of you. They need the real one. When people see the father you've become, do they know who helped you become him? This is a message to my wife, Teri. A thank you for the sacrifices I didn't always see, the years she carried more than I understood and the part she played in helping me become the husband and father my family needed. What You'll Hear In this episode: What I wish I'd understood when my wife first became a mum Why becoming parents changes your relationship as well as your life Why partnership isn't always fifty fifty Five things 25 years together have taught me about love How forgiveness gives our children something more valuable than perfection Why emotional safety matters more than the home we can provide What our sons learn by watching how we love each other Why This Matters Fatherhood doesn't happen in isolation. Sometimes the father everyone sees was shaped by someone standing beside him when nobody was looking. Our children are watching that relationship too. They're learning how to love. How to disagree. How to apologise. How to forgive. How to stay. And how to keep becoming. Answer Me This Who helped you become the person you're most proud of? And if the answer is your partner: When did you last tell her? What would you want your child to hear on the day they stopped believing in themselves? This is a message to my eldest son about self belief, confidence, failure, comparison and finding the courage to keep going when life doesn't turn out as planned. What You'll Hear In this episode: Why confidence disappears one disappointment at a time • The danger of confusing achievement with self worth • Five lessons I want my son to carry through life • Why comparison can steal more dreams than failure • How setbacks can build rather than define you • Why our children need to hear that we believe in them now Why This Matters We spend years trying to prepare our children for the world. But sometimes they simply need to know that when their own belief disappears, ours hasn't. Tell them. Don't assume they know. Those words might stay with them far longer than either of you realise. Answer Me This When did you stop believing in yourself, and why? And then ask an even harder question: What are your children learning about self belief by watching you? If your child could hear one message from you years from now… what would you want them to remember? This week isn't just another podcast. It's a letter to my youngest son and an invitation for every father to create something his children can return to for the rest of their lives. What You'll Learn In this episode you'll discover: Why every child needs to hear who they are before the world tells them who to become Five life lessons every father should leave for his children Why your presence matters more than your achievements How to build confidence through love, trust and emotional safety A simple exercise that could become one of the greatest gifts you ever give your family Why This Matters One day your children will ask themselves who they are. Long before that day arrives, they need to know what you believe about them. Not because they'll remember every word. But because they'll never forget how you made them feel. Your children don’t need your success. They need your commitment. If your children are watching you build, risk, fail and keep going, what are they learning about courage, belief and backing themselves? What You’ll Learn In this episode you’ll discover: Why belief means very little without action How preparation can become a hiding place Why children need to see Dad try, fail, reset and go again The difference between protecting your family and shrinking to safety How courage at home creates courage in your children Why This Matters Fatherhood is not just about providing and protecting. It is also about modelling what it looks like to believe in something enough to move. Your children are not only watching what you achieve. They are watching whether you commit. What You'll Learn In this episode you'll discover: Why children remember feelings more than explanations How your energy shapes the emotional climate of your home The difference between being physically present and emotionally available Why ordinary moments have the greatest influence on childhood How small changes in your daily interactions strengthen connection Why This Matters Most fathers work hard to provide for their families. Your children are always learning from you, but not just from your victories. They're learning from how you handle pressure, setbacks and struggle. In this episode, we explore the difference between raising resilient children and unintentionally teaching them that strength means suffering alone. What You'll Learn In this episode you'll discover: Why resilience and isolation are not the same thing. How your response to pressure shapes your children's emotional blueprint. Why children need to see recovery and not just endurance. The role connection plays in building real mental strength. How to model resilience without teaching silence. Why This Matters Every father wants resilient children. But resilience isn't about pretending everything is fine. It's about helping your children understand that challenges can be faced without losing connection. Because the example you set today becomes the pattern they follow tomorrow. Imagine your son becomes exactly like you. Not the version you show the world. The version your family sees every single day. The man who walks through the front door after work. The man who carries pressure in silence. The man who loses his patience. The man who loves fiercely but sometimes forgets to say it. The man your children are quietly studying every single day. Would you be proud? Because legacy isn't something you leave behind. Legacy is something you live. And whether you realise it or not, your children are already building their identity from the example you set. This we talk about: Why children inherit behaviours before they understand values The difference between teaching your children and modelling the life you want them to live How stress, silence and emotional habits become part of your child's identity Why resilience without connection can lead to isolation The importance of modelling vulnerability alongside strength How fathers shape confidence, self-worth and emotional resilience through everyday interactions Why the greatest legacy you leave isn't financial. It's emotional This is one of the most personal episodes of Answer Me This. Not because it asks difficult questions. Because it asks the question every father eventually has to answer: If my child became me... would I genuinely be proud? Why This Matters To Dads Most dads spend years thinking about what they'll leave behind. A home. Security. Opportunities. Financial stability. But children inherit far more than possessions. They inherit: Your relationship with stress, attitude towards failure, confidence, emotional habits, self-talk, resilience, the way you love and the way you recover after making mistake. That's why this episode is important, because your children aren't becoming the person you tell them to be. They're becoming the person they experience every day and that means every conversation, every reaction and every moment of connection is shaping the adult they'll eventually become. This focus on: Ask The Mirror Question If your child copied: Your mindset Your habits Your emotional responses Your relationship with yourself Would you be proud? Identifying One Behaviour To Change Don't try to transform everything. Choose one pattern. One habit. One reaction. Start there and let them see you as you change. Build Legacy Through Today's Actions Legacy isn't created in big moments. It's created in: Ordinary conversations Bedtime routines School runs Apologies Encouragement Laughter These are the moments they'll carry for life. This Week's Question For You If your child became exactly who you are today... What part of you would you be most proud for them to inherit? And what part are you committed to changing? What if the life you're working so hard to build... Is quietly pulling you away from the people you're building it for? Most dads don't wake up wanting to miss moments. They wake up wanting to provide. To protect. To create opportunities they never had. But somewhere between chasing promotions, paying the mortgage, building careers and carrying responsibility, many fathers lose sight of the very thing they set out to protect: Connection. Success isn't the problem. Living without clarity is. Because if your ambition isn't connected to your values, your family eventually pays the price. This week we cover: Why many fathers confuse provision with presence The hidden cost of chasing success without clear priorities How modern work culture creates disconnection at home Why children experience today while parents worry about tomorrow The difference between achievement and fulfilment How to redefine success around legacy, connection and influence Why boundaries—not balance—create stronger families The mindset shift that helped rebuild his relationship with work, fatherhood and himself As a dad, this matters because: Dads have never carried more pressure. Provide more. Earn more. Achieve more. Be present. Be patient. Stay healthy. Support your partner. Raise emotionally resilient children. No wonder so many dads feel stretched. But your children aren't measuring your success by your salary. They're measuring it by your availability. Your attention. Your laughter. Your willingness to stop what you're doing and enter their world. One day they'll appreciate what your hard work provided. Today... They simply want you. This week focus on these 3 things: Define Your Version Of Success Ask yourself: "If I removed money from the equation... What would success as a father actually look like?" Write it down. Audit Your Attention Where is your focus going? Work? Phone? Emails? Stress? Or your family? Attention is your greatest investment. Protect One Family Ritual Create one non-negotiable moment this week. Breakfast. School pickup. Bedtime. Saturday morning. Protect it like you would your most important meeting. Comment below: If success arrived tomorrow... Would you finally slow down? Or would you simply move the goalposts again? Expecting a baby? What if the biggest thing holding your child back... Isn't their confidence? It's yours. Because most dads don't lead from fear intentionally. We call it: Protection Guidance Preparation Experience Responsibility But sometimes... Fear wears a different name. And when it does, it quietly changes how we parent. The risks we allow. The opportunities we encourage. The freedom we give. The confidence we build. Or destroy. This week we cover The difference between protection and control Why fear often disguises itself as responsible parenting How overprotection can limit confidence and resilience The importance of trust in modern fatherhood Why confidence is built through challenge, not comfort The danger of constantly rescuing children from struggle How dads unintentionally project fears onto their children Why your confidence in them becomes their confidence in themselves In this episode we challenge you to examine where fear might be influencing your decisions. Why This Matters To Dads Every father wants to protect his children. That's normal. That's love. But there comes a point where protection becomes limitation. Where helping becomes controlling. Where guidance becomes interference. And when that happens... Children stop learning how capable they really are. Because confidence isn't built by avoiding hard things. It's built by facing them. By failing. By recovering. By proving to yourself that you can do more than you thought possible. The greatest gift you can give your children isn't certainty. It's self-belief. The question is: What example will they draw upon when that day comes? Things To Focus On This Week Audit Your Fear Ask yourself: Where am I saying "No" because of genuine risk... And where am I saying "No" because I'm uncomfortable? Let Them Struggle Don't rush in immediately. Give them space to: Think Adapt Problem solve Recover Growth happens there. Build Trust Intentionally Show your children: "I believe you're capable." Even when they're unsure. Especially when they're unsure.
