Beyond School: Raising Leaders, Not Followers With Jonathan “Jonno” Zalunardo | Apogee Australia What if the greatest thing we could teach our children wasn’t how to pass a test, but how to think, lead and take responsibility for their own lives? For many parents, conventional schooling presents a difficult dilemma. We want our children to develop strong academic foundations, but we also want them to be curious, creative, resilient, independent thinkers who genuinely love learning. Can the traditional classroom deliver all of that? And if we choose to step outside the system, what are the alternatives? In this episode of Parents With Questions, Adam Gibson sits down with Jonathan “Jonno” Zalunardo, a former schoolteacher who walked away from mainstream education to establish Apogee Australia, a family leadership centre in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. After nearly a decade working in education, Jonno became increasingly frustrated by a system he believed was prioritising curriculum, compliance and standardised achievement over the individual talents and potential of children. Rather than continue complaining about the system, he decided to build something different. Inspired by the American Apogee movement, Jonno and his wife created a learning community built around a powerful philosophy: Children are naturally driven to learn. Our job is to create the environment, provide the guidance and establish the standards that allow them to flourish. But this isn’t simply homeschooling, unschooling or letting children do whatever they please. Apogee combines freedom and self-directed learning with personal responsibility, strong values, physical activity, entrepreneurship, mentorship and the pursuit of excellence. It’s an approach designed not simply to educate children, but to help them become capable, confident young people who can navigate an increasingly unpredictable world. Adam and Jonno also explore some bigger questions about parenting, masculinity, the importance of positive male role models and why fathers need to take a more intentional role in shaping their children’s development. And perhaps most importantly, they discuss what happens when ordinary people stop waiting for systems to change and start building the alternatives themselves. If you’ve ever questioned whether conventional schooling is bringing out the best in your children, this conversation will challenge your thinking and open your eyes to what’s possible. Jonathan Zalunardo spent his career inside traditional and public education, and then he started asking questions of his own. What if children were treated as capable, self-directed leaders rather than passive learners? That question led him to found Apogee Australia, a Family Leadership Centre on the Sunshine Coast that prioritises working alongside families in raising confident, capable young men and woman Apogee Australia is part of the Apogee Strong Network Based in the United States. It's stated mission, "To reseed freedom in our nation by disrupting education for the entire family”. admin@apogeeaustralia.com.au Instagram - apogee_aus Facebook - Apogee Australia Website - Family Education Starter Kit | Apogee Australia / apogeestrong.com
Over the past few years, I’ve watched a growing number of Australians looking to the US — particularly places like Texas — to see what people are actually building around food, land, privacy, alternative currencies and community. When we recently introduced the PWQ audience to Live Free Academy, the response from Australia surprised even their team. Aussies joined the virtual summit, and some are travelling all the way to Texas to participate in person. So I wanted to ask a bigger question: What can Australia learn from what’s working — and not working — in America’s freedom movement? In this episode I sit down with John Bush, founder of Live Free Academy in Texas, who has spent more than 20 years in the freedom movement. John eventually came to a fairly simple conclusion: endlessly fighting the existing system wasn’t necessarily creating greater freedom. So his focus shifted towards building alternatives. We talk about local food and regenerative farming, land and intentional communities, Bitcoin and alternative currencies, privacy, decentralised technology and the counter-economy. Importantly, we also talk about what hasn’t worked. John and I compare notes on our experiences building communities and land projects and arrive at a familiar conclusion: sometimes the cows and chickens are easier than the people. Because freedom isn’t simply about opting out. It requires responsibility, maturity, self-governance and the ability to work together. John also shares what’s happening in his hometown of Bastrop, Texas, where residents organised against Flock surveillance cameras — a fascinating example of ordinary people taking effective local action. Not everything happening in America translates directly to Australia. Our laws, culture and circumstances are different. But there’s a lot we can learn from people who are already experimenting, building and finding out what works. Rather than reinventing everything ourselves, let’s learn from their successes and mistakes — and ask: What could we build here? We don’t control the world our children inherit. But we have enormous influence over how prepared they are for it — and over what we choose to build for them now. In this episode I sit down with my good mate Craig Schulze — entrepreneur, investor, podcast host and founder of the One Shot Movement. Craig and I first connected during COVID, when both of us made the decision to speak up. But what started as a conversation about freedom, resilience, business and navigating an increasingly uncertain world ended up somewhere much deeper. Craig shares the story of losing his first son, Ethan, and how that experience fundamentally changed the way he approached life. It eventually became the foundation of his book You’ve Got One Shot and the One Shot Movement — but more importantly, it changed the way he thought about fatherhood, purpose and what we actually do with the time we’re given. We talk about the cost of speaking up, building financial and personal resilience, creating income that isn’t dependent on a single employer or institution, investing in yourself, building meaningful relationships and learning to use emerging technology rather than simply fearing it. But ultimately this is a conversation about our kids. We can’t possibly predict what the next 10 or 20 years will bring. What we can do is raise capable, questioning, resilient young people — and take some responsibility ourselves for creating the kind of future we’d actually like them to inherit. A wide-ranging and very personal conversation with a good man. I think you’ll get a lot from this one - Adam. Connect with Craig here: www.theoneshotmovement.com www.craigschulze.com
For the past six years, I’ve spent a lot of time talking about freedom, broken systems and the need to build better alternatives for our families. But increasingly, I’ve come to believe that our biggest challenge may not be creating new movements, communities or institutions. It may be learning how to relate to one another well enough to sustain them. In this episode of Parents With Questions, I’m joined by Aaron Christos and Greer Ashley from Intimacy for Couples to explore the relationship skills most of us were never taught: how to remain curious during conflict, how to disagree without trying to dominate, and how to stand firmly for what matters without destroying the relationship in the process. We discuss why pressure exposes the cracks already present in families and communities, and why regulation should never be confused with passivity. Being grounded does not mean refusing to act. It means becoming clear enough to defend what matters without being consumed by fear, anger or the need to overpower someone else. Aaron and Greer also share their experience of navigating deeply divisive issues within a blended family, including co-parenting through the COVID vaccination debate. Their approach was not to avoid difficult conversations, but to find the common ground underneath the disagreement: the wellbeing of the children. We explore why so many well-intentioned movements, cooperatives and communities eventually fracture, even when everyone involved believes deeply in the mission. Often, the project receives all the attention while the relationships holding it together are neglected. This conversation covers: • Why relationships become a crucible for personal growth • Curiosity as an alternative to combativeness • How to seek understanding before demanding to be understood • The difference between regulation, collapse and passivity • How men can access anger without becoming controlled by it • Standing in “soft power” without attacking or dominating • Navigating major values differences inside families • Co-parenting respectfully after separation • Why children are harmed when one parent tears down the other • The relationship between self-esteem and power struggles • Why communities need relational skills, not just a shared mission • Masculine and feminine qualities beyond rigid gender roles • Repairing conflict rather than expecting relationships to be perfect • Creating a healthier model of relationship for our children to inherit The argument at the heart of this episode is simple: If we want to create a more peaceful, resilient and cooperative world, we cannot only focus on changing systems. We also need to become people capable of stewarding those systems together. And that work begins at home. In this episode of Parents With Questions, Adam Gibson speaks with Dr Dionne Payn, founder of Women 4 Homes, about the hidden housing crisis facing older women in Australia. Women over 55 are one of the fastest-growing groups facing homelessness and housing insecurity in Australia. Many are not living on the streets, but are sleeping in cars, couch surfing, house sitting, living in garages, or quietly moving between unsafe and unstable arrangements. Dionne explains the systemic factors behind this crisis, including the gender pay gap, career breaks for raising children, divorce, illness, lower superannuation balances, and the relatively short history of women having full access to financial products and property ownership. The conversation also explores why older women are the “wisdom keepers” of our communities, and why protecting their dignity, security and place in society benefits everyone. Dionne shares the model behind Women 4 Homes: a for-purpose, for-profit, property-backed approach that allows everyday people to invest in affordable, sustainable and dignified housing solutions. The first flagship co-living home for older women is close to fully funded and will be based in regional Victoria. This is not charity. It is a community-powered housing solution designed to create both social impact and financial sustainability. In this episode, we discuss: The hidden homelessness crisis affecting older Australian women. Why many women facing housing insecurity remain invisible. The systemic financial barriers women have faced across generations. Why co-living can offer dignity, privacy, affordability and community. How Women 4 Homes is creating beautiful, affordable homes for older women. Why the first flagship project matters. How everyday people can get involved through investment, skills, time, introductions, media support or sharing the campaign. Here are some links to Women4Homes resources, Website : www.women4homes.com Book : E.T.H.I.C.A.L Property Investing: The Busy Profeesionals Guide to Double Digit Returns Through Affordable & Sustainable Homes And here are four things that anybody can do to move this mission forwards. 1. For the past five years many Australians have focused on protecting themselves from a system they no longer trust. But what if the next chapter isn’t about resistance? What if it’s about creation? In this episode, Trent Chapman explains why some of the world’s most influential organisations use public foundations, charities and purpose-driven structures to create lasting impact—and how ordinary Australians can do the same. If you’ve ever wanted to build something bigger than yourself, this conversation may change the way you think about business, philanthropy and legacy. PS. On Thursday 18th June, Trent is hosting a live deep-dive workshop on public foundations, charitable structures, grants, tax-effective giving and the practical steps involved in setting these up. Over the years through Parents With Questions, many of you have come to know me as the face of things. But the truth is there has always been a co-founder quietly behind the scenes who rarely gets mentioned, and that’s my wife Fiona. While I’ve been out the front speaking up for families and questioning broken systems, Fiona has been raising our three daughters, running her own architecture business and obsessing over one very practical question that most parents wrestle with every single day: How do we raise healthy kids in a world where unhealthy has become completely normalised? That’s what this new podcast conversation is about. Because the reality is most parents already know many of the standard breakfast and lunchbox foods aren’t really working. The sugary cereals. The “healthy” breakfast drinks. The processed snacks. The endless convenience foods marketed directly at exhausted parents and hungry kids. The problem isn’t that parents don’t care - in fact its quite the opposite. The problem is that modern life is busy, rushed and overwhelming, and school mornings are often where good intentions fall apart. And sadly, big food companies have leveraged that reality to their own advantage — marketing ultra-processed convenience foods directly into the chaos of modern family life, while an entire generation of kids is now experiencing historically high rates of obesity, metabolic dysfunction and chronic disease at increasingly younger ages. In this conversation, Fiona shares: * why so many kids today are overfed but undernourished, * how food directly impacts focus, mood, behaviour and energy, * why healthy fats and protein matter so much for growing brains, * how schools and marketing have quietly normalised ultra-processed food, * and most importantly, simple, proven hacks and tools that parents can adopt to begin changing their kids’ relationship with food without turning life upside down. No perfection. No guilt. No extreme ideology. Just practical shifts that actually work in real family life. This is probably one of the most important parenting conversations we’ve had in a long time, and its one close to my heart as someone who has been championing kids health and connection to real food and farming for years now. If you’ve ever looked at your child’s lunchbox, a supermarket aisle, or a chaotic school morning and quietly thought: “There has to be a better way than this.” Then this is worth a listen - and worth sharing with a friend or family member who you know could be feeling the same way. Adam PS: Fiona also shares the simple “30-second breakfast shift” that led her to create “Rock it Fuel” for our own girls after years of struggling with the school morning rush ourselves. Its literally a game changer for your kids’ focus, behaviour and energy every day, plus solves your school morning breakfast stress into the bargain :) You can try it for yourself here for under fifteen bucks for a week’s worth - make sure you let us know how it goes for you!
www.uncoercible.com/wild-ground Most kids today aren’t lacking opportunity. They’re lacking challenge, guidance, and a clear path into adulthood . Instead of learning courage, critical thinking, and self-trust… they’re being shaped by screens, peer pressure, and a culture that rewards compliance. So what happens if we don’t step in? In this episode, I sit down with Michael Hayes to explore why rites of passage are missing from modern life—and why that matters more than ever. We talk about: what young people are really missing today why courage must be taught (not assumed) how nature and challenge build real resilience and how parents can step back into their role as guides This isn’t theory. It’s a practical, grounded conversation about raising kids who can think for themselves, stand their ground, and still lead with compassion. What if trading gold wasn’t complicated… just misunderstood? If the last few years have taught us anything… it’s that financial insecurity leaves you exposed. In this episode, former institutional trader Tony Barassi shares how the financial system really operates — and how institutions trade gold to generate income and protect wealth. More importantly… how you can start thinking the same way. This isn’t about chasing headlines or guessing the market. It’s about building a strategy. For decades, parents have been told a simple story about health: Follow the food pyramid. Trust the experts. Do what the doctor says. But what if some of those assumptions are wrong? In this powerful conversation, Adam Gibson sits down with Professor Ian Brighthope , one of Australia’s pioneers of nutritional and environmental medicine, to unpack a generational shift in how we think about food, immunity, and the role of doctors in our lives. Professor Brighthope helped establish the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and has spent decades challenging conventional thinking about diet, chronic disease, and preventative health. In this interview, he shares why the next generation of parents may need to rethink what we put in our kids’ lunchboxes — and why nutrition may be the most powerful medicine we have. But the conversation goes deeper. Professor Brighthope was also one of the early medical voices who publicly questioned the rollout of COVID vaccines for children, advocating instead for a more cautious and evidence-based approach. That stance came at a personal and professional cost. Now approaching 80, he reflects on what it means to stand up against your own profession, how parents can navigate a medical system many no longer fully trust, and how families can reclaim responsibility for their own health. This is a thoughtful, practical and deeply honest conversation about raising healthy kids in a complicated world. In This Episode We Cover • Why many of our assumptions about “healthy food” are outdated • Simple ways to improve kids’ nutrition and immunity through diet • What actually belongs in a healthy school lunchbox • Why nutrient density matters more than calories • How modern food systems may be contributing to chronic illness • Why some doctors are beginning to rethink mainstream nutrition advice • Professor Brighthope’s controversial stance on COVID vaccines for children • Whether we can still trust the medical profession • A new way parents can interact with doctors and the health system • What it takes to speak truth when the pressure to stay silent is immense • Lessons from a lifetime spent challenging medical orthodoxy About Professor Ian Brighthope Professor Ian Brighthope is one of Australia’s pioneers in nutritional and environmental medicine . Originally trained in agricultural science before becoming a medical doctor, his work bridges human health, nutrition, and the environment. He is a founding figure behind the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and has spent decades educating doctors about the role of nutrition in preventing disease. His work has helped shape a growing movement of practitioners focused on addressing the root causes of illness rather than simply treating symptoms. In a world that feels increasingly unstable — politically, economically, socially — how do we not just survive… but thrive? In this episode, Adam Gibson sits down with Jason Miles to explore what uncertain times demand of us — and the hidden strength they can reveal. Before the conversation begins, Adam addresses the recent developments surrounding the Family Farm project. Of the four farms launched three years ago, three remain independently operational and producing food. One farm on the Sunshine Coast escalated into prolonged legal conflict and is now in liquidation. Rather than focusing on conflict, this episode looks at something deeper: • What setbacks teach us about leadership • Why freedom requires structure • How misalignment can quietly undermine vision • The danger of assuming reasonableness • How to rebuild wiser, not bitter The original vision behind the farms — regenerative food, fractional land ownership, community, kids connected to soil — worked. Families gathered. Food was produced. Ownership was real. But structure matters. Protection matters. Alignment matters. And in uncertain times, pressure doesn’t destroy character — it reveals it. This conversation is about discovering your superpower in chaos — the mindset, discipline and clarity that allow you to keep building when others retreat. Because uncertainty isn’t going away. The question is: who do we become in the midst of it?
In this powerful episode, Adam speaks with Eric Meder, co-founder of Privacy Academy, about the hidden dangers of Digital ID, the under-16 social media ban, and the global shift toward centralized surveillance. Eric explains how smart devices collect and weaponise data, how youth are being targeted, and what families can do to stay sovereign in a rapidly closing digital net. Includes the announcement of a free parent + teen webinar: www.privacyacademy.com/uncoercible
Adam Gibson sits down with lawyer and freedom advocate Katie Ashby-Koppens, Head of Legal at the Aligned Council of Australia, to unpack the truth about Digital ID in Australia. https://libertyspenders.com/ We all remember what it felt like during lockdowns — the masks, the mandates, the ridiculous rules that changed every week. But what hit me hardest was the day I stopped at a country bakery on my motorbike ride. I just wanted to grab a bite to eat, and a 15-year-old girl behind the counter told me I needed to wear a mask. Think about that — a teenager, paid a few bucks an hour to serve pies and coffee, suddenly forced to become the health police. She wasn’t paid to do that. She was coerced — just like every other small business in the country. During those years, local business became the gatekeepers for government policy — unpaid, unwilling, and often unknowingly enforcing something they didn’t believe in. And the threat of fines, shutdowns, and loss of income kept them silent. Let’s be honest: apart from the big corporates, most small businesses in Australia suffered terribly through that time. Many didn’t make it. But what if business could become the vehicle for change? What if those same small businesses that were coerced last time… became the united front that said, “Never again.” In this episode of The Uncoercible Family podcast, we’re talking with Liberty Spenders — a group out of the US who’ve identified a $5 trillion market of faith-based, conservative, freedom-loving consumers who are done supporting woke corporations. It’s the biggest niche market in modern history — and the greatest opportunity for small and medium businesses to align their values with their customers and prosper because of it. Imagine if, instead of being bullied into compliance, Aussie businesses banded together and became a powerful movement for freedom — a marketplace built on integrity, courage, and truth. Even if you’re not in business yourself, please share this episode. Because this — this could be the one line of defence that no one has talked about yet. The big shift we are all praying for in our country may not come from politics… it may come from business owners who choose to stand together. All the best Adam Gibson Founder, Parents With Questions Host, The Uncoercible Family
What if your kids’ pocket money actually grew in value instead of disappearing on snacks and apps? That question hit me a few years ago — and led to a simple idea that’s now changing how Aussie families think about saving. I started paying my kids in real silver bullion coins for their chores and pocket money. Back then, silver was around $35–$40 an ounce. They tucked those coins into a money box… and a year later, those same coins were worth over $80 each — without lifting a finger. That’s when Silverstash was born — a simple way for families to help their kids start saving in real silver, not just numbers on a screen. In this episode, I sat down with PWQ parents James and Sarah Cervone who are now co-founders of Silverstash. They share - Why silver remains one of the most reliable forms of long-term value The pitfalls of buying silver in bulk (and how to avoid them) What it’s really like helping kids or grandkids build a monthly silver stash How Silverstash offers an easy, affordable way to have genuine 1oz silver coins delivered to your door each month and start your kids on their own wealth-building journey — for less than the cost of a coffee a day. If you’ve ever looked at your grocery bill and thought, “Something’s not right here,” you’re not alone. Food prices have exploded, supermarket shelves are full of products we can’t pronounce, and the chemical load in our food system has quietly reached record levels. Now, with talk of mRNA vaccines entering the livestock supply, the need for families to reclaim their food sovereignty has never been greater. This week on the Parents With Questions / Uncoercible Family Podcast, I sit down with Jason Ryan, founder of Hillview Farms — a former corporate executive turned regenerative farmer — who’s proving that clean, ethical, local food is still possible when consumers and farmers reconnect. Before that, I share some difficult news in the podcast introduction about one of our Family Farm projects at Cambroon on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Despite being much loved by co-owners and well on the way to full production, the farm has been been undermined from within by a small group of individuals, resulting in its liquidation. It’s a heartbreaking loss, but also a wake-up call: the vision remains sound, the need remains urgent, and people like Jason are showing us a better way forward. In this powerful conversation, we unpack: - Why grass-fed beef is nutritionally and ethically superior to feedlot meat. - The hidden dangers of GMO crops, glyphosate, and synthetic farm chemicals. - The looming concern over mRNA technology in livestock — and how your family can avoid it. - How shorter supply chains mean fresher, safer, more affordable food. - The rise of local co-ops, farmers markets, and small-town grocers rebuilding real community resilience. Jason also reveals Hillview’s next big step — a community crowdfunding offer via Birchal.com to expand their retail hubs, delivery network, and even build eco-farm stays where families can see, touch, and taste where their food comes from. As Jason puts it: “Ditch the supermarkets. Buy from your local butcher, fruit and veg shop, or direct from the farm. It’s the simplest form of activism—and it might just save our health, our farmers, and our future.” Adam Gibson Founder — Parents With Questions Host - The Uncoercible Family podcast To learn more about ordering food through Hillview Farms, go to: www.hillviewfarms.com.au To learn more about the Hillview Farms investment offer, go to: https://www.birchal.com/company/hillview-farms
This is Part Two of a deeply important conversation with Ros Nealon-Cook, ex-psychologist and fearless advocate for children’s mental health. In this wide-ranging episode, we dive into the foundations of emotional wellbeing — the stuff that’s so basic we often overlook it: sleep, movement, nutrition, play, laughter, and connection. Ros unpacks how these simple daily habits build true resilience and mental strength in our kids. She then introduces a practical emotional education framework known as the Zones of Regulation, helping parents and children alike tune into emotions, triggers, and stress in a language that’s simple, non-judgmental, and actually works at home. We also explore how families can begin healing the hidden trauma and division left over from the COVID years — a conversation that’s long overdue — and why processing collective shame and grief is key to moving forward. Other topics include: - How to raise courageous, emotionally literate kids in an age of fear and censorship - Ways to engage doctors and medical professionals and rebuild trust without blame or bitterness - The technology tsunami shaping our kids’ brains — plus real, workable family tech contracts to help your kids self-regulate their screen-time - The confronting reality of pornography’s impact on adolescent boys — and a surprising take on how to best address it positively Ros brings both compassion and clarity to one of the biggest issues facing parents today. We all know that in times like these, financial sovereignty isn’t just a luxury — it’s survival. In a world that’s proven how easily we can be controlled through dependency — jobs, debt, the system — being truly Uncoercible starts with taking back control of your finances. But if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably found that most financial advisors don’t get it. They don’t see the bigger picture — the agendas, the manipulation, the risks ahead — and their advice often misses what really matters: your values, your purpose, your peace of mind. That’s why this week’s podcast is such a breath of fresh air. I sat down with Justin Pagotto from Jireh Financial, who is one of the few in the finance world who truly gets it. Justin combines practical financial wisdom with spiritual and emotional intelligence. He’s awake to what’s happening in the world, but he also knows that money is meant to serve your soul — not the other way around. In this episode, we dive deep into some of the global economic threats and how to prepare for them, plus explore some practical pathways to aligning your wealth plan with your values and life purpose. How debt = control. “The borrower is slave to the lender.” How to reduce coercion risk quickly. The bond market time-bomb. What a spike in bond yields could do to rates — and your mortgage. Gold & silver (the real stuff). Why central banks are hoarding, and how families can hold outside the system. Diversify like Solomon. “Spread your money to seven or eight” — the practical, modern version. 7 streams of income. Why relying on a single wage is the riskiest play in 2025. End self-sabotage. The five traps killing momentum: lack of vision, focus, discipline, execution, consistency — and how to beat them. True prosperity. The Hebrew meaning: peace, wholeness, and wellbeing in every area of life — not just a bigger bank balance. If you’ve ever felt alienated or disillusioned by the mainstream financial world — this conversation is for you. Justin's website and contact details: https://jirehfinancial.com.au/
In this powerful conversation, Adam Gibson sits down with Ros Nealon-Cook, the first Australian psychologist to publicly speak out against the COVID narrative back in 2020–21. Ros shares her personal story of losing her psychology registration for doing what every parent instinctively knows is right—speaking up to protect children from harm. Together, Adam and Ros unpack what really went on behind the fear campaigns, lockdowns and professional gag orders that silenced so many voices of reason. Drawing on decades of psychological insight, Ros explains how fear literally hijacks the human brain, shutting down critical thinking and driving good people to conform with the herd. She breaks down the mechanics of group psychology, attachment to authority, and how governments used behavioural “nudge units” to manipulate the public into compliance. Most powerfully, she reveals how this collective trauma has affected our children—the so-called “COVID kindies”—and why so many kids today are struggling to regulate their emotions, focus, and trust the world around them. Adam and Ros move the discussion toward healing—starting with psycho-education for parents and kids. From her simple “Red Beast / White Rabbit” model for teaching self-regulation, to the deeper work of raising emotionally whole boys and rebuilding community outside captured systems, this episode is full of practical tools and profound hope. It’s a must-listen for any parent determined to raise resilient, critically-thinking kids in a post-COVID world. In this conversation, Adam Gibson and Jason Miles explore the themes of burnout, thriving, and personal resilience. They discuss the societal pressures that lead to burnout and the importance of self-discipline and financial independence in overcoming these challenges.
