Horses guide us to heal ourselves. We have left ancient wisdom behind in the world today, but we are rediscovering that some of the most powerful healing modalities come by reentering the natural world. One of those places in which it is becoming increasingly clear we gain the wisdom needed to thrive in the world today is at the side of a horse. While all horses hold an incredible capacity to aid humans in this way, it is often the wild, discarded, and "dangerous" horses that provide the clearest lessons if we are willing to set aside the ego and instead open our minds.

There might be an incredible path to healing that you've never heard about. In this episode I talk with Chance Foreman and Grant Rose about their new film, Dance of the Wild. In their film, Chance and Grant set out to tell the story of wild Mustangs in America. Along the way, they learned about the incredible women working beside these often unwanted and discarded horses. This is not a story of horse training or horsemanship, but a story of how women are pairing with formerly wild horses to bring hope and healing to a broken world. Dance of the Wild sets out to show both the beauty of wild horses with it's beautiful cinematography, as well the role horses have in our world today, to help individuals and humanity to heal. We talk all about their experience in creating the film and what they learned along the way. Chance Foreman is an award-winning filmmaker, poet, and global storyteller. From the rainforests of Borneo to the streets of India's slums, Chance's work resonates worldwide. As a recipient of the Grand Jury Award for Activism, his short documentary set in Brazil stands as a testament to his commitment to effecting positive change through the art of filmmaking. Based in Venice, CA, Chance continues to ignite hearts and minds with his captivating storytelling, inspiring others to join him in shaping a better future for all. Grant Eric Rose is an entrepreneur, storyteller, and producer whose work is rooted in a lifelong love of nature, animals, and the deeper wisdom found through observation and connection. Chiara Maria's instagram account "grow_with_horses" embodies all she is and the conversation we have. Chiara learned from a young age that she would not be content following the traditional path society laid out for her. She chose to walk off the path and build a life with horses. Spending time in traditional horsemanship, before realizing her horse Descot needed something different, she walked away from it all. That's when she leaned increasingly more into her intuition as she developed her own unique and aligned way to live a life with horses. In this episode you will learn: Why acceptance is one of the greatest gifts for both you and your horse How we bring our fears into our relationship with horses and how you can let go of them Steps you can take to find your purpose in this life Why your unique skills, talents, and contributions are needed If you are searching for peace and healing, or a better relationship with your horse that is peaceful and aligned, this episode is for you. What does it take to dedicate your entire life to wild horses? George Brauneis has been fighting for mustangs since before he could walk. As one of "Wild Horse Annie's Kids" who wrote letters to Congress in 1971 to pass the Wild Horse and Burro Act, George now cares for 26 mustangs using a philosophy he calls "Becoming Catchable To Your Horse." At six years old, George was one of tens of thousands of children inspired by Wild Horse Annie to write letters to Congress, helping pass the landmark Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971. After a career in aerospace engineering working on projects including the International Space Station, B2 Bomber, and Global Hawk drone, George returned to rural Colorado post-9/11 to come full circle to his roots: horses. Today, he operates Eagles and Wild Horses Ranch, where he cares for 26 mustangs using QiGong energy work and a purely positive training approach to help traumatized mustangs feel safe and trust humans again. In this episode, you'll discover: Wild Horse Annie's Legacy: How a 1971 childhood letter-writing campaign helped save America's wild horses What it takes to feed, train, and provide sanctuary for 26 horses Why George doesn't pity horses and focuses on empowering instead of feeling sorry for them Practical ways to support wild horse advocacy, even if you don't own land or horses This episode is for you if: You care about wild horse protection, want to understand what it takes to provide sanctuary for mustangs, or are looking for ways to get involved in advocacy—no matter where you live. What if a horse could not just teach you patience, trust, and presence in ways nothing else can, but change your entire world for the better? Cheryl Olsten, a Pennsylvania-based children's book author, shares how horses transformed her from a reluctant rider into a passionate advocate as she has felt personal transformation and care from horses. She has also witnessed the miracles they play a part in, such as nonverbal children speaking their first words on horseback. This conversation will expand the way you see horses and their power to heal. Cheryl's picture books include Big Wishes for Little Feet , inspired by her horse Lafitte. Lafitte's winnings have raised significant funds for the Equus Foundation, where Lafitte served as their first ambassador. Before writing children's books, Cheryl spent twelve years as publisher of New Jersey Life magazine, collaborating with award-winning writers and photographers. She lives in New Hope, Pennsylvania with her husband Steven and their dog Nugget, and continues to advocate for horse rescue and protection through her storytelling. In this episode, you'll discover: Why the difficult or abused horses are often the horses that are the most valuable in the end Why horses can help autistic children, trauma survivors, and anyone struggling How three separate horses played a pivotal role in three different areas of Cheryl's life How writing children's books became Cheryl's way to protect horses by inspiring the next generation Why you don't need to own a horse to experience their healing power and where to start Support the podcast: https://ko-fi.com/thetouchofamustang Help more people discover the healing power of horses: Leave a 5-star review and share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. This episode is an emergency release, as it is anticipated that aerial culling of the Snowy River Brumbies will begin by the Australian government on June 9, 2026. Perhaps like me, you grew up watching "The Man From Snowy River," in which the wild Brumbies were a central point of conflict in the story. Sadly, the hate towards the Brumbies and the desire to rid the land of them has not ended. In the name of environmentalism Australia's National Parks are targeting Brumbies. The government states there are tens of thousands wild horses roaming the Snowy Mountains, but those on the ground have seen otherwise. Despite experts testifying in favor of the Brumbies, the Australian government appears to disregard expert testimony and instead continues to move forward with plans to eliminate Brumbies on the land. Not by roundups and rehoming. In Australia, they shoot Brumbies from helicopters, reportedly in the thousands. Often inhumanely, leaving horses to suffer extensively before death. Kiki Sjoberg, a wild horse photographer, comes on the podcast to tell us what she has seen has happened to the Brumbies, and why if it doesn't change, they may one day be completely gone, leaving a land without a central piece of their heritage. Where Brumbies bodies lay dead and rotting , environmental groups are moving in to build a massive $12 billion hydroelectric project, taking away and destroying wild land in the process. This sounds like a $12 billion conflict of interest. What if the thing you need to begin healing is to spend time with a horse? In this episode I talk with Kathleen about the Horses for Mental Health campaign and what was accomplished. "Working with horses, I didn't think about addiction at all. Not for days after. There's just something about them—I was completely free from it." Ray Guidone What if the addiction you've been fighting for years could lose its grip—not through willpower or another program, but through standing in a pasture with a horse? Ray Guidone is a licensed massage therapist with nearly 30 years of experience, certified in medical and rehabilitation massage, Reiki, Qi Gong, and isolated stretching. After struggling with alcohol addiction and using it as an escape from the hard parts of life, Ray discovered something unexpected when he returned to working with horses: the cravings disappeared. Not just in the moment—but for days after. Without trying. Without white-knuckling it. As a 2026 Horses For Mental Health Ambassador for Samson's Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, Ray now understands what happened: horses don't just distract us from our addictions—they help us release the tension, trauma, and stress that fuel them. And when you're standing with a horse, fully present in their world, the need to escape your own simply fades away. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why Ray's addiction cravings disappeared when he started working with horses—and stayed gone for days • The childhood story of being found at age 3 in a circle of horses who wouldn't move • The difference between healthy escapes (horses) and destructive ones (substances, behaviors) • Why addiction is just distraction—and what horses teach us about being present instead • How physical tension in your body holds the emotional trauma that fuels addiction • Why horses are 100% honest—and how that honesty helps us face what we've been avoiding • The connection between stress, escape, and the cycle of addiction • Why veterans need the same herd structure horses provide—and how it supports recovery • How Qi Gong and energy cultivation help you connect with horses on a deeper level • Why "it's not the horse that's not listening—it's you" This episode is for anyone struggling with addiction, anyone seeking alternatives to traditional recovery programs, and anyone ready to discover that freedom might be waiting for them. What if the principles you use with horses is the blueprint for transforming your life? In this episode, horseman and author Justin Dunn shares how co‑creating experiences with a horse reveals the truth about our thoughts, habits, and character, and why character ultimately shapes our destiny. We talk about modeling “tension then relax” in everyday events, playing the larger life “game” better instead of fighting it, and learning to enjoy hard things so you can stay present when it matters most. Justin also unpacks the mindset behind his five‑part resonance framework and how a single aligned spark can become a positive wildfire of growth. In this episode, you'll discover: • What makes working with horses so powerful for high performers, those who are struggling and anyone who wants to change their life for the better • Why the way you interact with horses teaches you about life • How horses can create experiences that can't be replicated in therapy or on a screen • How the typical path in life often leads us astray • Why you'll have to go through a violent and destructive process to build anew This episode is for anyone who feels ready for realignment in their life and looking for methods to live life better. Lynn Thomas is a mental health professional who co-founded Horses for Mental Health , a nonprofit that supports equine-assisted mental health programs across 36 states and 6 countries. What if the story you've been telling yourself about being broken isn't true? Madison Orlando never knew her father—he died four days before she was born and then her mother went silent. Madison was raised by her grandmother, who couldn't walk. She got pregnant at 15, worked multiple jobs to survive, and spent years believing she was a mistake. But somewhere along the way, Madison discovered something powerful: we're not as fragile as we've been told. Today, Madison is a medical board certified massage therapist, Reiki master teacher, and former national champion in Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. She's trained with Dr. Wayne Dyer, Marianne Williamson, and Tony Robbins, and now helps people heal trauma through energy work and bodywork. As a 2026 Horses For Mental Health Ambassador for Samson's Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, Madison understands that healing doesn't always come from traditional therapy—sometimes it comes from horses, energy work, and learning to trust your own resilience. In this episode, you'll discover: • The difference between guilt (I made a mistake) and shame (I am a mistake)—and why it matters• Why you can't fake frequency (and why horses know when you're pretending to be okay)• How Reiki and horses help your body self-regulate and release stored trauma• What happened when Madison finally showed up as herself in her relationship (and why her husband loved it)• Why real love is liberating, not controlling• How the chakra system connects to your organs, emotions, and trauma patterns• Why forgiveness is for you—not the person who hurt you• How horses create conditions for healing without doing anything at all This episode is for anyone who's been told they're too broken to heal, anyone seeking alternatives or additions to traditional therapy, and anyone who needs permission to believe they're stronger than they think. Most people think training horses requires dominance. Michael Sanchez learned it's more about patience. Michael Sanchez works at a barn in Leeds, Alabama that has gentled hundreds of wild Mustangs. He didn't grow up dreaming of working with horses—he was the maintenance guy, the one picking stalls and fixing fences. But one day he was asked to hold a horse, and that was the start of many more horses to come. Now Michael spends his days teaching wild horses to trust humans, and he's learned that the key to building partnership isn't control—it's knowing the difference between being firm and being aggressive. As a 2026 Horses For Mental Health Ambassador for Samson's Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, Michael has seen firsthand how horses heal when you give them respect instead of force, and how that same approach can transform your own life. In this episode, you'll discover: • What it means to be firm without being aggressive (and why that distinction changes everything) • Why the first time a wild horse picks up its foot is about trust, not obedience • How to know when you're not the right person for a particular horse • Why Mustangs take longer to train than domestic horses—and why rushing the process breaks the partnership • What Michael learned about patience after gentling 300 wild horses • How horses helped him heal after losing his mom (and why his boss told him to just go sit with them) • Why building partnership with horses teaches you how to show up differently in your own life This episode is for anyone who's adopted a Mustang and feels stuck, anyone who wants to train horses without force, and anyone who's learning that the best relationships are built on respect, not control. What if the therapy program that saved a veteran's life had to close because they couldn't afford a vet bill? David Vieira is an Army Afghanistan veteran and founder of K9 Equine Alliance , a nonprofit that provides financial support to organizations offering service dogs and equine therapy to veterans struggling with PTSD, TBI, and MST. After building the first Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans War Memorial in Connecticut, David realized the unsexy but critical work that needed to be done—keeping therapy programs alive by covering hay bills, vet emergencies, and farrier costs. He created K9 Equine Alliance to cover the costs no one else would, and now supports over 50 partner organizations across 28 states. David travels the country visiting farms, responds to emergency calls on weekends, and operates with 100% volunteer support so every dollar goes directly to the animals. He's also the ghostwriter behind Wyatt Strother, a music project that honors fallen brothers and raises awareness for alternative therapies. How do you handle the loss of two of the closest people in your life? First, her mother passed, who she thought would outlive everyone. Then cancer came and took her sisters as well. When she talks about the experience today, it is with gratitude and strangely, with beauty. Britt has walked through grief and not only come out on the other side, but found the good in it. Britt Michaelian is a frequency artist and quantum healer who creates Reiki-infused paintings designed to transmit healing energy. Named one of MSN's Top 10 Most Creative Artists of 2025 and 2026, Britt has worked as an art therapist in oncology units and heart transplant floors, and walked through relentless grief—losing her mother, father, and sister to cancer. Through those experiences, she discovered that healing isn't just about traditional medicine or therapy—it's about frequency, energy, and reconnecting with your soul's voice. Britt now helps people find clarity, purpose, and peace through quantum healing, frequency art, and intuitive guidance. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why your thoughts carry a frequency—and how to raise yours • The difference between creating and consuming (and why one heals, the other drains)• How to reconnect with your intuition when you feel disconnected from yourself • Why gratitude is the fastest way to shift your energy when life feels overwhelming • What Britt learned about death, grief, and healing while caring for her family through cancer This episode is for anyone feeling disconnected from themselves, overwhelmed by the noise of the world, or searching for healing beyond traditional methods. What if you don't need to be born into horses to build a career training wild Mustangs around the world? Grace Thompson, 25-year-old colt starter and Mustang gentler , is the owner and founder of GET Horsemanship Wild Horse Training Facility in Eastern Tennessee. Grace didn't grow up in a horse family—she had zero experience when she convinced her parents to let her adopt her first Mustang as a teenager. Since then, she's competed in multiple Mustang Makeovers, won Colt Starting Championships, gentled wild Kaimanawa horses at Liberty in New Zealand with Kelly Wilson, and now prepares 25-35 Mustangs per year for export to Germany's Mustang Makeover. Grace has trained over 200 wild horses and is a 2026 Horses For Mental Health Ambassador for Samson's Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, where she donates trained Mustangs to help veterans heal from PTSD. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why Grace chose horses over her childhood dream of training orcas and dolphins (and what predator-to-predator communication taught her)• How she went from "clueless" teenager to professional trainer by saying yes to every learning opportunity• What it's like to gentle 10 wild horses at Liberty in New Zealand (and why it changed everything she thought she knew)• Why the horses Germany receives are wild again by the time they arrive (and why that's intentional)• How Grace balances competition pressure with horse welfare in colt starting challenges• Why "if you've trained 100 wild horses, you've trained one wild horse" • Why she believes Liberty horsemanship will become the future standard for Mustang training• How Mustangs are saving veterans' lives (and why Grace donates horses to mental health programs) This episode is for anyone who wants to work with horses professionally but didn't grow up in the industry, anyone learning Liberty horsemanship, anyone struggling to be patient with their Mustang's timeline, and anyone who believes in the healing power of horses for mental health. What if the reason your Mustang isn't progressing has nothing to do with the horse? Brittany and Jana continued to see the same problem, individuals who adopted a Mustang, but didn't know where to turn when it became difficult. Sending the horse off to the trainer was often ineffective because, while the horse progressed, the owner stayed the same. Jana Leniger, owner of Chasing a Dream Equine and virtual riding coach, works with Mustang adopters who want to do the training themselves instead of sending their horse away. Brittany Ference, Executive Director of Great Escape Mustangs, runs a nonprofit that supports Mustangs off-range through sanctuary and adopter education. Together, they created the Wild Horse Partnership Program—a three-month coaching intensive that keeps Mustangs in their adopted homes by empowering owners with the skills, confidence, and accountability they need to build a lasting partnership with their horse. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why the "send to trainer for 90 days" model fails Mustang adopters (and what works instead)• How 90 minutes a week with your horse creates more long-term success than 90 days with a professional• Why people with no horse experience sometimes progress faster than experienced riders with Mustangs• The real reason adopters feel like giving up (hint: it's not the horse)• Why choosing a Mustang based on color instead of character sets you up for failure• How accountability and customized support keep horses in their homes This episode is for anyone who's adopted a Mustang and feels stuck, overwhelmed, or ready to give up—and anyone considering adoption who wants to know what it really takes to succeed. What if the key to feeling successful with your horse isn't about finishing the ride—it's about how your horse feels at the end? Gillian Larson, backcountry thru-rider and founder of Gillian Larson Wilderness Horsemanship , has completed over 15,000 miles of solo riding including four Mexico-to-Canada journeys on the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail. She cultivates an ethos of equestrian travel that blends a love of the outdoors with deep respect and care for her equine partners, focusing on modernizing traditional packing techniques while prioritizing horse welfare above all else. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why Gillian didn't feel successful after her first thru-ride—even though she finished and her horses were sound• How tying your own success to your horse's mental and physical well-being transforms your horsemanship• What happens when you embrace discomfort and why it makes the good moments sweeter• The mental barriers that stop people from taking their horses into the back-country (and how to break through them) If you're ready to move from emotional reactivity to awareness and regulation, the next step is building practices that support lasting transformation.
