Ageing Honestly: Real Talk on Ageing for Women Over 60 Women over 60 often hear two messages: either fight ageing and try to look younger, or just smile, be grateful, and remain positive. Neither is true, and you’re probably tired of hearing both. My name is Penelope Lane. I’m a clinical psychologist with 38 years of experience, as well as a fitness trainer and mindfulness teacher. After going through my own personal challenges, I learned that we can approach ageing differently. To face what’s real, feel our emotions, and rebuild from there. I call this approach Whole Strength. It’s based on four steps I use every day: Notice It, Open To It, Rebuild, and Live It Daily. It’s okay to dislike getting older and still love the person you’re becoming. Both feelings are real, at the same time, and that's okay. This podcast is for women who want honest conversations about ageing. There’s no forced positivity or anti-ageing hype here. Just honest talk about what’s true and what really helps. Welcome to Ageing Honestly. You can check out my website here: https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Love Penelope🌷

When you’ve wanted to feel sure about getting older, what did you reach for? An anti-ageing fix, or a pro-ageing pep talk? I tried both. I bought the lotions, pushed my body too hard, and spent years being calm, grateful and quietly exhausted. n this episode, I talk about why neither approach can sell you the certainty you’re after, and what actually might be helpful instead: noticing what’s true, feeling what’s underneath, and being honest about it, even when it’s uncomfortable. That’s ageing honestly. And here's the link to the Stop Fighting Yourself course mentioned in this episode. https://www.penelopelane.com.au/stop-fighting-yourself-course-women-over-60 Share what's actually true for you. Women hear two main messages about getting older. One says fight it: buy the creams, keep pushing, treat ageing as a problem you can solve if you just try hard enough. The other says pretend: smile when you want to cry, be grateful, find the silver lining. I've tried both and neither worked for me. In this episode I share: What fighting looked like when I went back to the heavy weights after two painful disc herniations, and why I told myself I was fine. What pretending looked like when a friend said, “I didn’t realise it was that bad for you,” and why I spent the next few days making sure nobody could see. A third way that’s simpler and often harder: paying attention to what’s really happening, letting yourself feel it, and deciding what matters to you. What that looks like in real life, from her mum saying, “At least you’ve still got your health and mobility,” to being overlooked at a cafe. None of these moments are dramatic, and that’s the point. Ageing honestly isn’t one big breakthrough. It’s the small moments when you tell the truth instead of following the old scripts. If you’d like some structure for this, I've created the Stop Fighting Yourself course. It’s a self-paced, practical 30-day program based on one idea: it takes less energy to notice what’s really going on than to keep struggling against it. Details are in the link below. https://www.penelopelane.com.au/stop-fighting-yourself-course-women-over-60 Penelope Lane. Ageing Honestly. Whole Strength. Share what's actually true for you. Holistic, independent women: resistance to what’s happening creates chronic stress that accelerates aging. Buddhist teachings that help you accept ageing without giving up after 60 change everything. The shocking truth: The harder you fight against getting older, the faster you age. Your resistance is literally accelerating your decline. The Two Arrows (Practical Buddhist Teaching): First Arrow: Ageing itself—your body changing, things getting harder. This hurts. It's real. Second Arrow: YOUR resistance to ageing. "This shouldn't be happening." "I hate this." "Why me?" This is the suffering you ADD on top of ageing. Here's the insight that changes everything: You can't control the first arrow. But the second arrow? That's entirely in your hands. What Your Resistance Actually Does: - Creates chronic stress that shrinks your hippocampus (brain's memory centre), accelerates cellular ageing, increases inflammation, disrupts sleep. - Makes you rigid when you need to be flexible and resilient - Exhausts you—stealing energy you could use to build strength. The Paradox: When you STOP fighting reality, you have MORE power to work with it. Acceptance frees you to find creative solutions, adapt, and build real strength. Acceptance isn't giving up. It's seeing what's true without adding suffering on top: "My body is changing. This is hard. I hate it sometimes. And that's what's happening." In the video, I share a practical strategy to help you navigate the truth: You can hate getting older AND accept it's happening AND love who you're becoming. Stop shooting yourself with that second arrow. Your resistance is ageing you faster. Acceptance is what slows decline. Share what's actually true for you. "I'm fine, thanks." I've said it a thousand times without really meaning it, and I bet you have too. In this episode, I talk about that habit: the automatic " I’m fine" that slips out before you even think. I’ll explore why we do it, what it costs us, and how it can leave you feeling unheard even when you're with others. I’ll also share what happens, even physically, when you finally say what’s really true to someone who truly listens. An ordinary coffee after fitness class turned into something I'm still thinking about weeks later. Losses big and small shared out loud, a closed bakery, a bad knee, a friend who's gone. In this episode, I share what that coffee taught me about connection as we age, the research linking isolation to a significantly higher risk of dementia, and a simple practice called No Agenda you can try this week with just one person, no plan required. Do you ever feel invisible as you get older? Overlooked at the shop counter, dismissed in meetings, or unseen by the people closest to you? It does happen, so you’re not just imagining it. In this podcast, I share what happened to me in a shop that made me realise how deep this feeling actually goes, and the three layers of invisibility I see in women over 60 again and again: social, sexual, and family. I also share what finally helped: not fighting to be noticed, and not pretending it doesn't hurt, but a real, honest shift that let me become visible to myself, even on the days nobody else notices me at all. At the end, I walk you through a simple practice called The Mirror Moment, something you can do today, in under a minute, whenever that invisible feeling is there for you. If this resonates, I'd love to know: where do you feel most invisible right now? Work, family, somewhere else? Tell me in the comments. Managing online business failure while dealing with grief is overwhelming. I was the strong one. Strong, capable, independent, that was the story I told myself for decades. Then my back gave out, my brother died, and my six-year business still wasn't working. I lost the story I'd built my whole identity on, and I had to ask a question I'd been avoiding: who am I when I can't be that anymore? In this podcast, I walk you through what actually happens when the identity you've defended for years falls apart, and a simple five-step practice you can do with me, right now, to start finding out what's underneath it. This is for you if you're a woman over 60 navigating ageing, identity change, retirement, health changes, or a loss that's made you question who you actually are. 🌷 GET HONEST TALK ABOUT AGEING IN YOUR INBOX 👉 https://www.penelopelane.com.au/subscribe-ageing-honestly 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Share what's actually true for you. Can you love your independence and still feel alone? I explore why feeling alone is different from being lonely when living independently. Many women struggle to reconcile a fulfilling life with the desire for a deep, partnered connection. In this podcast, I'm addressing the confusion that arises when you are genuinely happy with your routine, work, and freedom, yet still experience a distinct sense of loneliness. You can love your independence AND feel the absence of a partner. You can have rich friendships AND still grieve the lack of a companion. Both are real, and both are allowed. This is ageing honestly. Not lonely, not desperate—just real talk about being single after 60 without shame. 👉 WHAT YOU'LL HEAR: → Why happiness and aloneness aren't opposites → The difference between lonely and alone → How to communicate this paradox without apology → Living with mystery and uncertainty If you relate—or know someone who does—this one's for you. 🌷 GET HONEST TALK ABOUT AGEING IN YOUR INBOX 👉 https://www.penelopelane.com.au/subscribe-ageing-honestly 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Share what's actually true for you. I woke up one morning in terrible pain, leading to disc bulge exercises to manage it. This experience, alongside a friend's cancer experiences, and another's daughter being suicidal, makes me deeply aware of life struggles after 60. These events highlight the importance of mental health awareness for older adults, as any day can bring significant change, a reality that shapes my perspective. 🌷 GET HONEST TALK ABOUT AGEING IN YOUR INBOX 👉 https://www.penelopelane.com.au/subscribe-ageing-honestly 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Share what's actually true for you. After a recent phone call with my son, I found myself reflecting on the sense of "motherhood and identity" and the experience of "losing yourself in motherhood." This feeling of "identity shift" is common when "life changes" and our children no longer need us in the same way. It left me with a sense of "feeling lost in life", a sentiment many women share. Your identity didn't disappear. It's just been underneath all that doing. 🌷 GET HONEST TALK ABOUT AGEING IN YOUR INBOX 👉 https://www.penelopelane.com.au/subscribe-ageing-honestly 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Share what's actually true for you. After 60, what we resist persists, while what we acknowledge has the opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement. I'm 68 and for years I resisted getting older, viewing it as 'staying positive' or 'fighting ageing.' This podcast explores the idea that what we resist persists, while what we acknowledge has the opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement. Explore the paradox of ageing—why you can hate getting older while loving who you're becoming. Discover the truth about ageing honestly. In a world that demands we either "fight" ageing or "force" positivity, there's a third way: Ageing Honestly. This podcast explores the profound paradox of getting older—the ability to grieve your physical losses while celebrating your emotional growth. We often feel pressured to choose a side, but true calm and grit come from holding both truths at once. You can feel the sting of invisibility and the liberation that comes from caring less about what others think. "Aging Gracefully" is exhausting. And fighting your age is a war you'll always lose. There's a third way — and it starts with telling yourself the truth. In this podcast, I share my journey of rejecting the idea of "ageing gracefully," which often implies being invisible and silencing opinions to fit into societal expectations. It's a candid look into the psychology behind these social norms and how they can lead to an inauthentic and exhausting life. I discuss the importance of authenticity and emotional honesty for personal growth and self-awareness, rather than conforming to external pressures. In this podcast: - The hidden cost of "ageing gracefully" — and why it's not actually grace - The other trap: why fighting your age keeps you stuck - What happened to me at 66 (and what it finally taught me) - What ageing honestly actually looks like as a daily practice with three shifts that change everything 🖊️🌷 I write a bi-weekly letter called Ageing Honestly — no fluff, no forced positivity, no anti-ageing nonsense. Are you exhausted but feel guilty whenever you try to rest? In this episode, I explore the complex paradox women over 60 face: the battle between an ageing body’s need for recovery and a lifetime of conditioning that ties worth to productivity. Many women over 60 experience a deep exhaustion that sleep alone cannot fix—yet resting feels impossible. Decades of conditioning have taught many women that their worth comes from productivity, making rest feel like failure. At the same time, ageing bodies need more recovery and care. This honest conversation looks at the emotional, cultural, and physical reasons behind this struggle. Instead of forcing drastic changes, this episode encourages small, gentle steps toward rest. If you feel tired but can’t stop, you’re not alone—and learning to rest is possible. 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ Share what's actually true for you. What happens when a strong, capable woman admits she needs help? At 67, I teach fitness classes, rebuilt my body after serious disc injuries, and run a business. Yet recently, I needed help getting up off the floor and financial help from my daughter for a medical procedure. And I forgot to pack my undies for a mini-break with my daughter. Why does everyone think that if you're strong, you don't need help?" In this podcast, I break down the myth that independence means doing everything alone. Being strong doesn’t eliminate real challenges — especially with ageing, health costs, and past financial decisions. Asking for help isn’t a weakness. It’s honesty. It’s courage. It’s human. You can be strong and need support. Both are true. 🌐 Visit My Website - https://www.penelopelane.com.au/ If you are new to my podcast, I’m happy you're here.
