Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 67, I hit the road with Australian song and dance man Alex Cameron , a weirdo pop hero! Since the release of debut album ‘ Jumping the Shark ' - initially released for free on his website in 2013, before being reissued by Secretly Canadian in 2016 - Cameron has blurred the lines between performance art and genuine pop bops, putting out a series of records that are both smart and hilarious, with lyrics that are endlessly singable. Ahead of releasing his latest album ‘ Late to Set ’, I caught up with Cameron over Zoom , where we spoke of fellow Aussie pop weirdo Jack Ladder - a previous guest on episode 57 - as well as a love of Depeche Mode , touring with The Strokes , the good lord and - most importantly - what his lifelong friend, business partner, and saxophonist Roy Molloy is up to these days. Through the wonders of the internet, Alex recorded near enough the whole thing from the front seat of his 1997 Japanese Toyota Celsior . Because of this, the signal is occasionally patchy, but such is the sacrifice for an artist and his favoured mode of transport. Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 66, it’s an honour to feature an interview with Walter Schreifels of Quicksand , Gorilla Biscuits , Youth of Today , Rival Schools and more! A man of many iconic moments in hardcore - according to one YouTube comment, the man who “ legalised being handsome in hardcore ” - Walter Schreifels has been ripping it since the late 80s and continues to do so today. With Quicksand , completed by bassist Sergio Vega and drummer Alan Cage , Schreifels has released four studio albums, with their latest - ‘ Bring On The Psychics ’ - arriving July 2026 via Equal Vision Records / Rude Records . I caught up with Walter over Zoom in May ahead of the release of their new album, where we spoke of the record, as well as The Smiths , Wetherspoons , 80s movies, his connection to hardcore and the literal youth of today. Walter was talking to me from the lobby of a hotel, so there’s the occasional dip in and out of signal, but you’ll soon get to grips with it. Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 64, we get political, welcoming vocalist Victoria Marie and guitarist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco of NYC outfit Downtown Boys ! Victoria and Joey first met at union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, brought together to write early songs about issues including exploitative workplaces. Before too long, the collective had three full length albums under their belts and have become known for a raucous live show, whilst still keeping politics front and center. New album ‘ Public Luxury ’ is out June 2026 via Sub Pop - arriving nearly a decade after their Sub Pop debut ‘ Cost of Living ’. Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 63, it’s a thrill to feature an interview with Jim Ward of Sparta and At the Drive-In ! A native of El Paso, Texas, Ward co-founded cult American post-hardcore band At the Drive-In and during his tenure, released a trio of studio albums and several EPs to much acclaim, before the band knocked it on the head in 2001. Moving on from the break up sharpish, Ward’s next move was to form Sparta with members of At the Drive-In . With numerous line-up changes over the lifetime of the band, the outfit have put out six studio albums across 20+ years, with their latest album - ‘ Cut a Silhouette ’ - arriving May 2026 via Equal Vision Records . I caught up with Jim over Zoom the week of releasing ‘ Cut a Silhouette ’, where we spoke of the new record, as well as the built up mythology of At the Drive-In , drinking to cope with music industry pressures, a lifelong love of Billy Joel and the infamous At the Drive-In appearance on ‘ Later... with Jools Holland ’, featuring a bemused Robbie Williams . Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 61, I’m tickled pink to feature an interview with Éliane Viens and Félix Bélisle of Canadian art-punks, La Sécurité ! A head-spinning art-punk collective based out of Montreal, La Sécurité first caught my attention with the release of a couple of knock out singles in 2024. Wonky bops that take in everything from egg-punk to new-wave to post-punk, their energetic concoctions are best encountered at a sweaty live show. Following up on their 2023 released debut album ‘ Stay Safe! ’, their new album ‘ Bingo! ’ arrives June 12th 2026 via Bella Union and Mothland . The reveal of this came out during our interview as we actually spoke with La Sécurité in October 2025, not long after the quintet had rocked my world at Manchester Psych Fest . Recorded over Zoom , we spoke of the new record, as well as signing with Bella Union and hanging out with Simon Raymonde , being “ Montreal late ” - owing to Éliane’s late arrival - and having a song featured in TV sensation ‘ Emily In Paris ’. Welcome to ’ 60 Minutes or less ’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where to mark the big 6-0, for this episode I’m delighted to feature an interview with Scottish singer songwriter Steve Mason , him up front in The Beta Band ! Vocalist and a founding member of The Beta Band , Mason is also a critically acclaimed solo artist in his own right, having released five albums under his own name. With The Beta Band , Mason and co released three studio albums that landed in the Top 20 in the UK charts, with their ‘ The Three E.P.’s ’ compilation being a notable favourite amongst fans (even featuring in a much loved scene from the film ‘ High Fidelity ’). After knocking the band on the head in 2004 - with their label owed a cool million quid - following a 20 year break, The Beta Band made their long awaited return in 2025, selling out an Autumn tour of the UK within hours, with dates on the horizon this year too. Formed when yours truly was still in short trousers, Hey Colossus have been ripping it for 20+ years, in that time featuring shapeshifting line-ups, at one point even featuring a guest turn from the late Mark Lanegan on their 2020 album ‘ Dances / Curses ’. Outside of the band - or rather, parallel to the band - Joe and Chris also run Wrong Speed Records , a truly DIY label that’s put out records from Hey Colossus , alongside the likes of Big Break , Objections and Colossal Squid . In February 2026, Hey Colossus released their latest album ’ Heaven Was Wild ’ - Their fifteenth studio album and one which the band have said felt like therapy. We caught up with the pair over Zoom at the start of 2026 to talk about the latest Hey Colossus record, as well as working with Mark Lanegan , comparisons to Billy Idol, being influenced by Glenn Danzig and the DIY ethos that keeps them ticking. There are some pretty standard cliches when it comes to the music industry, particularly when a band have a new record to promote, but for Domenic “Nicky” Palermo , the highs and lows have been legit. From a prison stay in his youth to substance abuse issues, as well as more recent health concerns in the form of essential tremors - a neurological disorder similar to Parkinson’s disease. It’s no joke when the story leading into the release of their new album is the frontman’s introspection. Starting out life as a solo bedroom project in Philadelphia in 2010, Nothing have since put out four full length records to much acclaim, with the band subsequently embarking on countless tours that have pushed Palermo to the limit. Late February 2026 sees the release of latest album ‘ a short history of decay ’, their first on new label, Run For Cover Records - an album that further reflects on a life lived. We spoke with Nicky over Zoom a month ahead of release, as he got ready for the Nothing tour of Japan. We spoke about the record itself, as well as boozing and indulging on tour, a love of Wetherspoons , the pressure of dealing with a devoted fanbase and his incarceration. A Mancunian in his own right, BC Camplight a.k.a. Brian Christinzio has been up Norf for over a decade, in that time putting out a handful of choice releases under tastemaker label Bella Union . In June 2025, BC Camplight put out his latest opus, ‘ A Sober Conversation ’, a very personal record that deals with themes of sobriety and child abuse. Having referred to childhood trauma obliquely on past records, the latest release has the subject front and centre. Rather than conduct the interview over Zoom , it was a pleasure to speak with Brian from his back garden in south Manchester on a lovely summer’s day. Whilst his sweet dog Frank slept soundly on my lap, we got into it pretty deep with Brian - covering the very serious topics of the record, but also his friendship with Badly Drawn Boy , the perils of social media, misogyny in the music industry and working with his partner.
