In This Episode Happy Halloween, friends! Before we get into it, I share a little life update and why a loving marriage is the key ingredient to enjoying your life. When you’re struggling and emotionally drained, it dims the joy in every other area. Then we pick up where episode 143 left off. If you haven’t listened to it yet, pause and go listen first. You’ll get so much more out of today’s conversation. Quick Recap of Episode 143 Personality tests, attachment styles, the Enneagram, and love languages are not the villain . The trouble starts when the language moves from the understanding lane into the ammunition lane . Three weapons to watch for: the diagnosis, the shield, and the trump card. The question to keep asking: “What is this information for?” If it helps you understand and love him better, it’s a tool. If it’s proof he’s the problem, it’s a weapon. The real issue is emotional childhood , the belief that my feelings are caused by you. The solution is emotional adulthood , where I take full responsibility for my own emotions and let you be who you are. Questions I Answer in This Episode When “He Really IS the Problem” How is it weaponizing to name what’s actually happening, like when he truly is a dismissive avoidant? If I don’t point out his patterns, isn’t staying quiet just enabling him? Doesn’t owning my emotions mean his behavior doesn’t matter? Why does he get a pass? When You’re Tired of Being the One Who Changes I’ve done all the work for years. Why should I be the one to change again? He won’t take a test, read a book, or go to counseling. How do I get him to collaborate? I apologized for using the label and he didn’t apologize for anything. Now what? We’re both emotional children. How do we start when neither of us wants to go first? When It Feels Like Emotional Adulthood Is Code for “Be Quiet” Isn’t emotional adulthood just telling women to stop having feelings? When he screams at me, am I supposed to choose to feel fine? Where’s the line between taking responsibility for my emotions and gaslighting myself into accepting bad treatment? If I can’t ask him to change, how is that different from giving up? I’ve been told I’m “too sensitive” my whole marriage. Won’t owning my feelings make it worse? When It Gets Practical How do I bring up a real pattern without it sounding like a diagnosis? Is there ever a right time to say, “I think your attachment style is affecting us”? What if my husband is the one using labels as a weapon against me? I’ve been awful about using his personality type against him. How do I repair it when he’s still angry? Key Takeaways Describe behavior, not identity. A label can describe a pattern, but it can’t tell you who he is. Try: “When I share my feelings and you go quiet, my brain tells me the story that I don’t matter to you.” A request isn’t a demand. With a request, you’re okay whichever way he answers, and that’s influence rather than control. Both things are true: his behavior is his responsibility, and the thoughts and feelings you create about it are yours. Owning your emotions means you’re not handing him the remote control to your inner world. Feelings are welcome, blame is optional. You can say “I feel really hurt” without saying “You made me feel this way and you need to fix it.” A repair isn’t a trade. Apologize because of the kind of woman you want to be, not to get an apology back. Boundaries are about what you will do. “If you raise your voice, I’ll leave the room” protects you without needing him to change. Ask yourself, “Why not me?” Somebody has to go first. A repair can be as simple as three sentences. Self-coaching is never a replacement for safety. If you catch yourself using “it’s all just my thoughts” to talk yourself out of something that feels wrong, bring in a trusted coach or counselor for perspective. Try This Week Pick one recurring frustration and write out your own three-part script: name the specific behavior, share your thought and feeling, and make a request. No labels, no verdicts, no “you always.” Work With Me If you feel stuck in a recurring conflict, I’d love to walk you through the tools you need to heal and move forward. Stop Weaponizing Personality Tests and Attachment Styles Jane loves the Enneagram, attachment theory, and other personality tools, and uses them with couples every day. But she’s also watched couples turn that same information into the most sophisticated weapons, winning the argument while the relationship loses. In this episode, we talk about how to use these tools the way they were meant to be used. Scripture: Matthew 7:3-5 and Galatians 6:1-5 What We Talk About Why the tools aren’t the villain. How personality tests and attachment styles give us language for things we’ve felt but couldn’t express. Weapon #1: The Diagnosis. “You’re just a Type 4, that’s why you’re so needy.” When we stop describing a pattern and start attacking character. Weapon #2: The Shield. “That’s just my attachment style, I can’t help it.” When a label becomes a permission slip. Weapon #3: The Trump Card. “Even the quiz agrees with me.” When we recruit a third-party judge to declare us right. The speck and the plank (Matthew 7:3-5). Why we get so good at spotting what’s in our spouse’s eye that we give it a color-coded chart. The one question to ask. What is this information for? Understanding is a tool; explaining what’s wrong with him is a weapon. Emotional childhood vs. emotional adulthood. Brooke Castillo’s teaching from The Life Coach School, and why “you make me feel” is the oldest sentence in the world, just dressed up in nicer vocabulary. Self-coaching Model basics. Circumstance, thought, feeling, action, and why the answer to “I feel hurt” isn’t found in his behavior. Letting people be who they are. What it looks like to take care of your own needs and let your spouse take care of his. Five Ways to Use These Tools as an Emotional Adult Point it at yourself first. What do I tend to think when I feel criticized? Do I withdraw, defend, fix, or chase? Hold it as a question, not a verdict. “Does this fit? Does it feel true?” Let your spouse be the expert on himself. Pair the assessment with ownership. Own the thought, own the feeling, and make a request instead of a demand. Treat differences as information, not malfunctions. His wiring isn’t wrong because it’s different from yours. Hold labels loosely. A quiz you took on a Tuesday is a snapshot, not a life sentence. Key Takeaways A label can help you understand your spouse, but it should never be a final verdict. Emotional childhood is the default setting for all of us. It’s not a character flaw, but it keeps us arguing for our limitations. Give an emotional child a chart and they’ll use it to prove it’s your fault. Give an emotional adult the same chart and they’ll find more compassion. Curiosity is the oxygen of a close and loving marriage, and diagnosing kills it. When you catch yourself using a label as a weapon, repair it: “That wasn’t fair. I’m sorry. Can I try again?” Challenge of the Week For the next seven days, every time you reach for a label (his type, his attachment style, or even your own as a shield), pause and ask: What is this information for? If the answer is understanding, go ahead. If it’s to win, to prove, or to protect yourself from feeling something, let it go unsaid. Then pick one recurring frustration and walk it through the Model on paper before you bring it up. A Note From Jane If your marriage includes any intimidation, control, or fear, or if these patterns trace back to deep wounds or trauma, please don’t try to solve that with a podcast and a good attitude. A licensed counselor or therapist is a wise, brave addition. Fall Specials Ending Soon! Stuck in the same recurring conflict? Jealousy is one of the most human emotions there is, and for many women it gets louder in midlife. In this episode, Jane answers a question from Sandy, a listener who just turned 50. A new neighbor has moved in who seems to have everything: a "perfect" body, a successful husband, plenty of money, and a warm welcome from Sandy's friends. Sandy feels tortured, can't stop thinking about her, and feels ridiculous for feeling this way. Jane explains why jealousy isn't the neighbor's fault, how the Self-Coaching Model shows that our thoughts create the feeling, and how to move from scarcity to abundance. She also shares a five-step process you can use the next time the sting hits. In this episode, you'll learn Why feeling jealous doesn't make you a bad person The difference between jealousy and envy, and why the tools work for both How the Self-Coaching Model (Circumstance, Thought, Feeling, Action, Result) shows where jealousy really comes from Why jealousy is a scarcity story ("she won, so I lost") and how to break it Why comparing your insides to someone else's outsides always leaves you short How jealousy can point you toward what you truly want, and whether you really want it A five-step process: notice it, find the thought, look for the insecurity, choose a new thought on purpose, and ask four powerful questions A simple challenge for this week: get curious about her instead of treating her as competition Key takeaway Someone else's blessing isn't a withdrawal from your account. There is enough, for her and for you. Scripture referenced Proverbs 14:30 (NIV): "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." The leaves are turning, the pumpkin spice candle is burning, and somewhere in your house the TV has been claimed for football. 🏈 Whether your household lives and breathes football from September to February or you couldn't care less, this episode isn't really about the game. It's about what happens in a marriage when one person is all in and the other is along for the ride (or not on the ride at all). In this lighter, fall-themed episode, Christian marriage coach Jane shares four things football season, or any seasonal tradition, can reveal about your marriage, plus a simple two-minute homework assignment that can save you a whole lot of frustration and resentment. If you just finished the marriage series with us, consider this your exhale. If you're new, welcome, friend. You're in the right place. In this episode, you'll learn: How to make room for "his thing" or "her thing" with generosity instead of a running scorecard Why inviting your spouse without expecting a yes protects your joy (and what a granddaughter's "mud spa" taught Jane about it) How to protect couple time during a five-month football season without canceling the game A word-for-word way to tell your husband you miss him without starting a fight How unspoken expectations quietly become resentment, and how to stop that cycle Why playfulness and laughing at yourselves is one of the most underrated tools in marriage This week's homework: Have a two-minute conversation before Saturday: "What does this weekend look like for you? Which games matter most? Here's what I'd love if it works…" Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9, "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor." 🍂 Fall Coaching Special: Private coaching sessions at $100 each, the lowest pricing since Jane started coaching in 2019. What are you and your spouse building together? What happens when a couple becomes really good at managing life together but forgets to intentionally live life together ? You raise the kids. You manage the schedules. You go to work, attend church, pay the bills, take care of the house, and keep everything moving. And then one day, the kids are older. The house is quieter. Your careers change. The busy seasons begin to slow down. And you look across the table at the person you've been married to for 25 or 30 years and wonder: “What are we building now?” “What are we moving toward?” “What is our marriage actually for?” In this final episode of my six-part series on building a connected marriage, we're talking about shared purpose, - and why having a shared vision, shared values, and something meaningful to move toward together can profoundly strengthen your marriage. I'll share a deeply personal story from my husband's family during World War II about Kees and Christina and the little Jewish girl they risked everything to protect. Their story is a powerful example of what can happen when two people are bound together by something bigger than themselves. We'll also explore: Why shared purpose becomes especially important in midlife The difference between building a life together and living life together How shared purpose creates a stronger sense of “us” How knowing your core values can make decisions easier Why having something meaningful to work toward can strengthen teamwork How shared purpose can help couples navigate difficult seasons Why purpose gives your brain something more productive to work on than finding fault with your spouse How shared values can strengthen connection, friendship, and hope How to create a vision for the next chapter of your marriage Questions you can ask your spouse to begin discovering your shared purpose And I'll leave you with one question I hope you and your spouse will sit with: What are we building together? Your shared purpose doesn't have to be a grand calling. It might be raising children who know they are loved and know God, creating a welcoming home, serving your community, supporting each other's dreams, creating a family legacy, or simply becoming the kind of couple whose marriage blesses the people around them. Your purpose is personal and unique to you as a couple. And you don't have to have all the answers today. You can start with a conversation. What matters most to us? What do we want our marriage to stand for? Who do we want to bless? What kind of legacy do we want to leave? And what do we want to experience together while we're here? FREE MASTERCLASS: FIND EACH OTHER AGAIN If you've been listening to this six-part series and realizing that you and your spouse could use a reset, I'd love to invite you to my free marriage masterclass: Find Each Other Again This is designed to be a meaningful date night for the two of you , -an evening of turning toward each other, noticing what may have been lost, and beginning to create a marriage you love coming home to. What happens when you still love your spouse, but you don’t really like your marriage anymore? After years of raising children, managing a home, working, solving problems, and navigating life together, many couples slowly become good partners but stop being lovers, friends, and deeply connected companions. That’s exactly where Jane Copier found herself in her own marriage. In this episode of Happy in the Middle , Jane shares the vulnerable story of realizing that she loved her husband but didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in the marriage they had created. Rather than settling for emotional distance, she and her husband made the courageous decision to let their old marriage die so they could intentionally create something new. Jane explores what it really takes to restore intimacy, including the often-overlooked connection between the thoughts we think about our spouse, the feelings those thoughts create, and the actions we take toward them. You’ll discover why proximity isn’t intimacy , why resentment can change the way we see our spouse, and how becoming genuinely curious about the person your spouse has become can begin to bring aliveness back into your relationship. Most importantly, Jane offers hope: a cold marriage isn't necessarily a dead marriage. You may not be able to recreate the marriage you had when you were younger, but you can create a new marriage that is more intentional, honest, connected, playful, and intimate. In this episode, you'll learn: Why loving your spouse and liking your marriage can be two very different things What “marriage drift” can look like in everyday life Why proximity alone doesn't create intimacy How our thoughts and stories about our spouse influence our desire to turn toward them How resentment can become the lens through which we see our partner The difference between positive thinking and choosing more generous, truthful thoughts Why emotional intimacy requires honesty, curiosity, vulnerability, and presence How physical and sexual intimacy can grow from emotional connection Why the goal isn't to get your “old marriage” back How to begin creating a new and more alive marriage together If you've been thinking, “This is us,” Jane invites you to join her free Marriage Masterclass, Why Good Couples Slowly Grow Apart , where she'll unpack why loving couples drift apart, and the simple habits that can help them find each other again. Have you ever looked at your husband and thought, “I love him… but I don't know if I actually like him anymore?” Maybe you still love each other, but somewhere along the way, your marriage became more about managing life than enjoying life together. Between kids, work, schedules, responsibilities, bills, and the endless demands of daily life, you may find yourself wondering: When did we stop being friends? In this episode, Christian Marriage Coach Jane Copier shares a powerful perspective on how to rebuild friendship and emotional connection in your marriage. You'll learn why the way you feel about your spouse is deeply influenced by the thoughts you repeatedly think about them, -and how the stories you tell yourself can either create distance or help you reconnect. This is not about pretending your marriage is perfect or ignoring real problems. It's about becoming aware of negative thought patterns, choosing to see the whole person you married, and intentionally creating new opportunities for fondness, admiration, curiosity, laughter, and connection. In this episode, you'll learn: Why friendship is one of the foundations of a strong marriage How negative thought patterns can quietly create distance between you and your spouse Why collecting evidence against your husband can change the way you feel and behave toward him How your thoughts influence your emotions, actions, and the results you create in your relationship Why you don't have to wait for your spouse to change before you begin changing your own experience How to interrupt unhealthy relationship loops The difference between positive thinking and intentionally choosing another honest thought How to begin seeing your spouse through a lens of fondness, grace, and curiosity Why your spouse is both the person you married and someone who has continued to grow and change Simple questions that can help you get curious about each other again The Fondness & Admiration Reset you can begin practicing this week Why creating new experiences, laughter, novelty, and shared memories matters in marriage How one thought, one conversation, one date, or one act of kindness can begin rebuilding friendship Jane also shares the powerful reminder from Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loveth at all times.” What might change if you began intentionally looking for what you appreciate about your spouse instead of continually collecting evidence against them? Sometimes friendship doesn't return to a marriage in one grand moment. Sometimes it comes back one thought at a time. One expression of gratitude. One shared laugh. One memory. One conversation. One date. What does it really mean to feel emotionally safe with your spouse? In this episode, Jane Copier, The Christian Marriage Coach, explores why emotional safety is one of the most important foundations of a connected, intimate marriage. Learn what emotional safety is, what couples often misunderstand about it, what destroys it, -and five practical ways to create more safety, trust, vulnerability, and connection in your relationship. Have you ever wanted to tell your spouse something important, -but stopped yourself because you were afraid of how they would respond? Maybe you're tired of the defensiveness, the arguments, or the feeling that you have to carefully choose your words. You may love each other deeply and still struggle to feel emotionally safe in your marriage . Emotional safety isn't about never disagreeing, avoiding difficult conversations, or making sure your spouse never feels uncomfortable. It's about creating a relationship where both people can be honest, vulnerable, imperfect, and different while still feeling loved, respected, and valued. Jane explores: What emotional safety actually means in marriage Why emotional safety is so important for intimacy and connection The difference between emotional safety and simply avoiding conflict Why couples sometimes stop being honest with one another How criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and withdrawal can erode emotional safety How to create a marriage where vulnerability is welcomed rather than punished Why repair matters when we've hurt each other How Christian principles like compassion, humility, gentleness, forgiveness, and love can strengthen emotional safety Practical ways to begin creating more emotional safety in your marriage You'll also receive a simple Marriage Reset exercise you can do with your spouse this week to begin creating more openness, trust, and connection. Because a strong marriage isn't one where you never hurt each other. It's one where you know how to find your way back to each other. Have you ever looked at your spouse and thought, “I love you… so why don't I feel as close to you anymore?” You're still married. You still love each other. You're raising your family, managing the household, making plans, and showing up for life. But somewhere along the way, something changed. You haven't necessarily fallen out of love. You may have simply drifted apart. Love is something we all crave, -but what if we’ve been thinking about it backwards? In this episode, we explore one of the most life-changing emotional skills you can develop: your love-ability, -your ability to create, feel, and give love on purpose. Many of us have been conditioned to believe love comes from other people, -their approval, affection, appreciation, or behavior. But that mindset leaves us emotionally dependent and waiting for others to. Today we unpack a more empowering truth: love is not something you wait for, it’s something you practice. You’ll learn: Why love is a skill, not just an emotion How judgment, pride, and self-protection block love Why withholding love hurts you more than anyone else How boundaries and love can coexist beautifully Practical ways to increase compassion and emotional connection How gratitude and receiving love deepen relationships Why loving on purpose creates greater peace, resilience, and joy Whether you’re struggling in marriage, parenting, family relationships, or simply wanting to feel more connected and alive, this episode will help you open your heart and build greater emotional freedom. This is the final episode before summer break, and it’s one close to my heart. Thanks for listening and sharing with a friend! ❤️ Are you ready to make your marriage amazing? Have you ever wondered if God is still guiding your life… even when you can’t clearly see Him working? In this episode of Happy in the Middle , I’m sharing one of my favorite stories from the Old Testament, - the story of Esther, - and the powerful life lessons we can learn from her courage, wisdom and faith. Esther’s story is remarkable because God’s name is never explicitly mentioned in the book, yet His hand is woven throughout every chapter. And isn’t that often true in our own lives too? Together, we explore how Esther teaches us to trust God through uncertainty, step into courage even when we feel afraid, stay rooted in our identity, and recognize that difficult seasons may be preparing us for something greater. We’ll talk about: What the story of Esther teaches us today How courage is rarely the absence of fear Why your life carries purpose — even when you cannot see it Trusting God through uncertainty and hard seasons The power of influence without force or control Why preparation often comes before calling How to strengthen your self-concept and remember who God says you are If you’ve been struggling with fear, feeling stuck, or wondering whether your life matters in God’s greater story, this episode is for you. Because perhaps… you too were created for such a time as this. ❤️ Are you ready to make your marriage amazing? I’d be honored to walk with you. In today’s episode, we’re talking about one of the most important skills you can develop as a woman: self-trust. So many women believe they need more discipline, more motivation, or more confidence in order to create the life they want. But underneath all of those struggles is often a broken relationship with themselves. When you don’t trust yourself to follow through… When you fear uncomfortable emotions… When you repeatedly break promises to yourself… It becomes difficult to feel peaceful, powerful, or secure, - even when things are going well. In this episode, I walk you through five transformational shifts that will help you build deep self-trust and become a woman who knows she can handle life with strength, intention, and grace. We discuss: Living deliberately instead of reactively How buffering keeps us disconnected from ourselves Why emotional discomfort is not dangerous Building confidence through follow-through Becoming the observer of your thoughts instead of identifying with them Creating self-respect through self-regard Why you cannot shame yourself into peace How intentional living creates emotional freedom This episode is filled with practical mindset shifts and coaching tools to help you stop self-sabotaging and start creating the life, relationships, and emotional peace you truly desire. ❤️ Are you ready to make your marriage amazing? Do you ever feel like one small thing can throw off your entire day? In this episode, we’re diving into the truth about “bad days”—and why they’re not actually caused by your circumstances, but by the meaning your brain assigns to them. If you’ve ever found yourself spiraling after a frustrating moment, feeling stuck in negative emotions, or wondering why your mood can shift so quickly, this episode will give you practical tools to take your power back. You’ll learn how to: Stop labeling your day as “bad” after one difficult moment Manage your thoughts instead of believing everything your brain tells you Process negative emotions without letting them take over Interrupt mental spirals before they gain momentum Redefine what a “good day” really means This is a powerful mindset shift rooted in both coaching principles and faith-based truth, including insights inspired by Brooke Castillo and Jody Moore, along with scriptural support like Philippians 4:8 and Romans 12:2. If you’re ready to stop piling up “bad days” and start showing up with more intention, peace, and emotional strength—this episode is for you. ❤️ Are you ready to make your marriage amazing?
