You want to have a spectacular life. You want to live longer as long as you are healthy mentally and physically. This podcast has been a vision of mine for the last two and a half years. As I continue to share with people the astounding results, 90% extension of life in test subjects, reported in peer-reviewed published research about our molecule ESS60, I started to think about what it would be like to live longer. Not just longer, but ALOT longer. I also started thinking about how living longer would disrupt the vision many people had about their lives and the final years of that life. This podcast is big enough to cover all aspects of Living Beyond the Norms but it will start and probably focus on health and longevity and the cutting-edge research which promises significantly longer and healthier living. It will also cover the unconventional strategies employed today by today's experts to help people Live Beyond the Norms.

Imagine waiting months for a clinical trial that could give you your life back, only to hear a doctor say they don't expect you to recover. That's what happened to my guest, Brandy Gillmore. After a car accident and a serious fall, she spent years battling severe chronic pain, struggling to walk, and searching for treatments that might help. When the clinical trial failed to bring relief, one question about the placebo effect sent her in an entirely new direction. Today, Brandy teaches others how to identify and change emotional patterns that she believes influence physical health. We talk about her remarkable recovery, why positive thinking alone wasn't enough, and how she uses thermal imaging to demonstrate changes in pain. “We are so much more amazing than we realize.” ~ Brandy Gillmore Love the show? Ice baths, prolonged fasting, extreme diets, and uncomfortable biohacking routines. You don't want to do these things. No one does. And you know what? You don't have to. Chocolate, laughter, sunshine, vacations, and spending time with friends sound much better. And surprisingly, these simple pleasures may help you live longer. There's even research to support some of their health benefits. Dr. Patrick Quillin joins me to discuss his latest book, The Pleasure Advantage, and why enjoying life deserves a place in the longevity conversation. We explore the science behind everyday pleasures, the importance of belonging, and why staying healthy doesn't have to feel like punishment. “There's two main urges in the human mind, and that's to seek pleasure and to avoid discomfort.” ~ Dr. Patrick Quillin We appreciate everyone who takes the time to review Live Beyond the Norms. Human life expectancy has increased dramatically over the past century. In the United States, the average has risen from roughly 47 years in 1900 to around 77–78 years today. We can thank advances in medicine, sanitation, and public health for much of that progress. But what's the point of living longer if you spend your final years struggling with illness or disability? My guest, Dr. Bob Rakowski, believes those final years don't have to be defined by poor health. In fact, he argues that the best way to protect your independence starts decades earlier, with the habits you practice every day. We discuss why sleep, strength training, and real food deserve more attention than biohacks, and how his Magnificent Seven approach can help us work toward a longer, healthier life. “You don't want to spend the end of your life suffering.” ~ Dr. Bob Rakowski We appreciate everyone who takes the time to review Live Beyond the Norms. What happens when someone who built her career around intermittent fasting decides to stop doing it? That's one of the questions I explore with Cynthia Thurlow, a nurse practitioner, bestselling author, and women's health expert whose TEDx talk on fasting has reached nearly 16 million views. Cynthia's own experience with midlife changes has reshaped her approach to health. She now prioritizes building muscle over losing weight, keeps her fasting windows shorter, and challenges the advice women are often given when their usual diet and exercise routines stop working. We also discuss hormone replacement therapy, the connection between menopause and gut health, and why women may need to rethink their habits as they get older. Cynthia shares what she's learned about protecting strength, maintaining independence, and making informed decisions about aging well. “The things that allowed us to be successful in our teens, 20s, and 30s become maladaptive in menopause.” ~ Cynthia Thurlow Enjoying Live Beyond the Norms? Every 20 seconds somewhere in the world, a person with diabetes loses a limb to amputation. For many, the path to that point begins with diabetic neuropathy. Sensation in the feet fades, so injuries can go unnoticed long enough to become ulcers. Some of that lost sensation may not be as irreversible as patients are often told. Podiatric and peripheral nerve surgeon Dr. Stephen Barrett argues that diabetes can cause nerves to swell and become compressed. He believes that relieving the pressure can restore sensation and function in some patients. Dr. Stephen and I talk about how this happens and what nerve decompression could mean for people with diabetes. We also get into the patient whose foot moved again after five years. “It's always easier to prevent a problem than to try to reverse a problem.” ~ Dr. Stephen Barrett Support the show and get 50% off MCT oil with free shipping—just leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify and let us know! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/live-beyond-the-norms/id1714886566 Resources Mentioned: U.S. Neuropathy Centers - https://usneuropathycenters.com/ The Pod of Inquiry - https://podofinquiry.com/ Some Nerve: New Hope for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy - https://podofinquiry.com/2025/12/some-nerve-hope-for-patients-diabetic-peripheral-neuropathy/ About Dr. Stephen Barrett: Dr. Stephen Barrett is a podiatric and peripheral nerve surgeon with decades of experience treating foot, ankle, and nerve conditions. Americans love their supplements. After all, they spend up to $70 billion per year on supplements, according to some estimates. But supplements can only do so much if your lifestyle keeps exposing you to the things that are affecting your health in the first place. Chemical Free Body founder Tim James believes supplements have their place, but reducing that exposure has to be part of the equation. We talk about chemicals in everyday products, how stress affects the body, and why he starts some people with greens when they barely have the energy to make other changes. The rise in human life expectancy is one of medicine’s biggest achievements. In 1950, the global average was just over 46 years. Today, it has passed 73. But living longer has also given us more time to accumulate the cellular damage behind many diseases of later life. That brings me to my guest, Aubrey de Grey. A biomedical gerontologist and creator of SENS, Aubrey sees accumulated damage as something future medicine could repair again and again, potentially pushing biological decline further into the future. Aubrey and I discuss his work with mice, the possibility of rejuvenating people later in life, and his idea of longevity escape velocity, where advances in medicine keep buying us enough time to benefit from whatever comes next. “I don't work on immortality. Your mouth is home to somewhere between 50 and 100 billion bacteria. We’re taught to get rid of bacteria, but many of the microbes in a healthy mouth are supposed to be there. My guest, Nadine Artemis, explains why oral health depends on a healthy microbiome, how this changed her approach to dental care, and what led her to the “invisible toothbrush.” Our discussion doesn’t end with dental health. Telomeres shorten every time many of our cells divide. Once they become too short, those cells can lose their ability to keep dividing. But what happens if you can lengthen them again? Dr. Bill Andrews explains how research into telomerase opened that possibility and what happened when scientists restored telomerase activity in experimental cells and mice. He also discusses where gene therapy fits into the picture and the risks that still stand in the way. This episode is a repurposed segment from an earlier Live Beyond the Norms conversation. Six months before having a widowmaker heart attack at 34, Dr. Stephen Hussey had a coronary calcium score of zero. He exercised regularly, ate a whole-food diet, and says his other health markers gave him little reason to think a heart attack was coming. After surviving it, he started questioning whether the usual markers tell us enough about heart health. That led him to look more closely at blood flow and what happens inside the arteries as heart disease develops. Dr. Hussey shares why sunlight and our daily light environment have become such a big part of how he thinks about cardiovascular health. He explains his interest in structured water and why his experience has made him question how much we can learn from testing alone. “If a diet stops working for you, don't be dogmatic about it.” ~ Dr. Stephen Hussey Support the show and get 50% off MCT oil with free shipping—just leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify and let us know! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/live-beyond-the-norms/id1714886566 Resources Mentioned: Understanding the Heart by Stephen Hussey - https://resourceyourhealth.com/shop/ The Fourth Phase of Water by Gerald H. Over the last four decades, obesity in the U.S. has nearly doubled. Research has found testosterone levels in American men declining by around 1% per year since the 80s. Most alarmingly, global sperm concentration has fallen by more than 50% since the 1970s. For people struggling with their weight, hormones, or fertility, figuring out what’s contributing to the problem can take years. Dr. Wendy Myers believes one culprit deserves more attention: the environmental chemicals and heavy metals we’re exposed to every day. According to Dr. Myers, these exposures can interfere with the way our hormones function and may even make losing weight more difficult. She explains why minerals are such an important part of her approach to detox and what we can do to reduce the toxic load we encounter in everyday life. “Your minerals are the spark plugs of your body.” ~ Dr. Wendy Myers Support the show and get 50% off MCT oil with free shipping—just leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify and let us know! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/live-beyond-the-norms/id1714886566 Resources Mentioned: Limitless Energy: How to Detox Toxic Metals to End Exhaustion and Chronic Fatigue by Wendy Myers - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Limitless+Energy+Wendy+Myers Myers Detox Protocol - https://myersdetox.com/myers-detox-protocol/ Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) - https://store.myersdetox.com/collections/detox-protocols Perfect Iodine by Activation Products - https://activationproducts.com/products/perfect-iodine Jaspr Air Scrubber - https://jaspr.co/products/airscrubber Seafood Survival Guide: Toxicity and Sustainability Article - https://myersdetox.com/seafood-survival-guide/ Spooky2 Rife Machine - https://www.spooky2.com/ About Dr. Wendy Myers: Dr. Wendy Myers is a naturopathic doctor, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner, and founder of MyersDetox.com. There are roughly 650,000 full-time sworn law enforcement officers in the United States and more than a million active physicians. But how many people have spent decades in law enforcement, served on a SWAT team, and then become a doctor? Probably not many. My guest, Dr. Mark Sherwood, is one of them. That career change gave Dr. Sherwood an unusual perspective on stress, health, and aging. He explains why he thinks stress is something we do rather than something we have, and why our genes leave us with more room to influence our health than many people assume. We also talk about hormone replacement therapy and the rise of GLP-1 drugs, including Dr. Sherwood’s own experiment with retatrutide. Along the way, he explains how he measures biological age and why longevity comes down to staying capable for as long as possible. “I just want to make sure I have a life in my years.” ~ Dr. Mark Sherwood Support the show and get 50% off MCT oil with free shipping—just leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify and let us know! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/live-beyond-the-norms/id1714886566 Resources Mentioned: Authentic Longevity by Dr. Mark Sherwood and Dr. Michele Sherwood - https://www.amazon.com/Authentic-Longevity-Unlocking-Lifelong-Vitality/dp/B0FZ1PGNNQ/ref=sr_1_1 The Longevity Lab - https://www.skool.com/the-longevity-lab-4097/about GlycanAge Biological Age Test - https://glycanage.com/ About Dr. Mark Sherwood: Dr. Mark Sherwood is a naturopathic doctor and co-founder of the Functional Medical Institute. Nearly three in four women with moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms report feeling tired or worn out. Add hot flashes, brain fog, anxiety, and bloating, and suddenly it’s hard to know what’s causing what. These symptoms are often treated one at a time, but Lisa Smith believes there’s an important connection between them. The functional medicine dietitian points to the gut, where bacteria can even affect whether estrogen leaves the body or gets sent back into circulation. Lisa breaks down how that happens, why some women struggle with HRT, and what leaky gut and liver health have to do with hormones. She also shares practical ways to support the gut through probiotics, prebiotic foods, protein, and fiber. “Do one thing today. A 2016 study of 800,000 children found that antibiotics or antacids in the first six months of life significantly raised the risk of eczema, asthma, and life-threatening food allergies by age four. Dr. Elisa Song walks through that data, plus a Finnish study of one million births linking early antibiotic exposure to anxiety and mood disorders later in life. She also covers how to spot the difference between a viral and bacterial infection, and what to ask before filling a prescription. This is a revisit of a conversation I had earlier this year with Dr. Song. Most people think stem cells are unregulated overseas, dangerous, or something you can only access by flying to another country for treatment. Even the ones who believe in them often assume more cells always means better results. But what if none of that is actually true? That's the case Dr. Joy Kong has spent years making. As a UCLA-trained, triple board-certified physician, Dr. Kong has seen it all. She once watched a single stem cell infusion produce changes in a young patient that years of psychiatric medication never could. She's witnessed many more conditions improve with stem cell therapy and has spent years separating fact from fiction. Cholesterol, blood pressure, and family history are the usual predictors doctors check for heart health. What most don't mention is that nighttime erections can predict it too. It turns out that tracking this single signal can flag cardiovascular risk years before symptoms show up. Doctors have known this for decades, yet no one outside a sleep lab has ever actually tracked it. Well, no one, except for Elliot Justin. Doctor Justin is an emergency physician and healthcare entrepreneur. For years, overlooked signals like this one kept pulling his attention, the kind of data hiding in plain sight that could change how men catch heart disease early. Eventually, that pull led him to build a device that turns this nightly signal into something anyone can measure at home. Self-discipline matters more than IQ for your success. According to research from the University of Pennsylvania, it was more than twice as effective at predicting students' final grades. That same discipline can carry you through school and into a successful career. But health and fitness play by different rules, and sheer willpower often isn’t enough. Ben Brown, head nutrition coach at BSL Nutrition, sees this all the time with high-performing executives. They’ve built careers by pushing harder, working longer, and refusing to quit. But with health, that same mindset can backfire. Willpower works more like a battery than a personality trait. The harder you lean on it, the faster it drains. That’s why, according to Ben, long-term success often comes down to better systems, not more discipline. "The people that rely the least on self-control and discipline are the ones that put themselves in situations that don't require as much self-control and discipline." ~ Ben Brown About Ben Brown: Ben Brown is the owner and head nutrition and fitness coach at BSL Nutrition, a global online health coaching company he co-founded specializing in individualized nutrition, lifestyle, and strength training for highly driven men and women. Roughly 7.4 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease, and by the time symptoms show up, the disease has often been building for 10 to 20 years. Add in the roughly one in three Americans carrying the genetic marker tied to higher risk, and the scale of what's coming becomes hard to ignore. Despite the stats, Dr. Ken Sharlin doesn't order a test unless it's going to change what he does next. Most of what he needs to know comes from listening first. Some of his MS patients have gone years without disease-modifying medication. Others no longer meet the criteria for the diagnosis they came in with. As you get older, you start to notice that aging doesn't move at a steady pace. It picks up speed. And the tools most people reach for to fight it - peptides, hormones, the usual stack - are built to fix a problem that moves in a straight line. A top interventional cardiologist for decades, Dr. Jeffrey Gladden watched his health collapse in his 50s. When a doctor chalked it up to age and offered an antidepressant, he spent two and a half years rebuilding his biology from scratch instead, and that process became the foundation of everything he does now. Dr. Gladden built a five-part system around that idea, one that treats aging as something to get ahead of rather than patch after the fact. "The body can't heal when it's stressed. The body ages more rapidly when it's stressed." ~ Dr. Jeffrey Gladden Support the show and get 50% off MCT oil with free shipping—just leave us a review on iTunes and Spotify and let us know! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/live-beyond-the-norms/id1714886566 Resources Mentioned 100 Is the New 30: How Playing the Symphony of Longevity Will Enable Us to Live Young for a Lifetime by Dr. Jeffrey Gladden: https://www.amazon.com/100-NEW-30-SYMPHONY-LONGEVITY/dp/1636801870 BrainTap: https://braintap.com/ About Dr. Jeffrey Gladden Dr. Jeffrey Gladden, FACC, is a triple board-certified physician in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology with over 40 years of medical experience.
