Are you tired of dog training advice that gives you one more thing to try but still leaves you wondering what you're missing? If you've followed the advice, learned everything you can, and still can't figure out what actually makes sense for the dog in front of you, this podcast is for you. Named Sniffspot's #1 Dog Training Podcast in 2026 and ranked in the top 3% of podcasts globally. This is the dog community for people who love their dogs deeply and want to understand them without feeling like there's always another problem they need to fix. I'm Em. Former vet tech, dog trainer, and canine nutritionist. I went looking for a dog community that actually understood how complicated life with dogs can be and kept finding gatekeeping, judgment, and people who'd decided their way was the only way. So I built the space I couldn't find. Listen, and you'll learn how to: - Better understand the dog in front of you instead of chasing one-size-fits-all advice - Use what you already know and get curious about what you might be missing - Start trusting the decisions you make and adjust when your dog gives you new information - Look at the whole dog through training, behavior, nutrition, enrichment, health, and environment - Feel less alone in the grief, burnout, uncertainty, and messy parts of life with dogs Solo episodes, guest conversations, and real stories covering dog training, dog behavior, dog reactivity, dog nutrition, dog enrichment, dog health, dog body language, pet loss, senior dogs, and the parts of life with dogs no one really prepares you for. New here? Start with "What Your Reactive Dog Actually Needs Isn't What You've Been Told" (released Jan 12, 2026). 🎥 Full video episodes available on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@thedogwhoaskedformore

When a dog is terrified, knowing how to help them can feel anything but straightforward. And when a training approach doesn't seem to be working, how do you decide what to try next? Dog trainer William Garrido shares the story of Sophia, one of the most fearful dogs he'd ever worked with, and his decision to use a controversial training approach after earlier attempts hadn't helped. We also talk about Fitz, whose experience with different training tools led me in a very different direction. You'll hear: Why Sophia's extreme fear challenged William's assumptions about dog training How Sophia and Fitz responded differently to the approaches their trainers tried What their stories reveal about the importance of observing your dog's behavior rather than assuming one approach will work for every dog Press play for a conversation about fearful dogs, difficult training decisions, and why understanding the individual dog matters when you're trying to figure out what comes next. You know the plan isn't working. Everyone is more stressed, you're constantly managing the fallout, and yet changing course somehow feels harder than trying one more time. When consistency gets treated like the answer to every dog training problem, walking away from a plan can feel like admitting you didn't try hard enough. But sometimes the thing keeping you and your dog stuck isn't a lack of effort. It's the pressure to make the original plan succeed, even when it's making life harder. You'll hear: Why changing a dog training or management plan that isn't working doesn't mean you've given up on your dog How trying different setups with Fitz and Ernie eventually led to a solution that created less stress for everyone Why new information can be a reason to change course instead of proof that you made the wrong decision Press play if you've ever kept trying to make a plan work because stopping felt too much like failing your dog. Your dog knew how to do this. They've done it dozens of times. So why does one hesitant session suddenly make it feel like all your dog training progress has disappeared? When something changes, even something small, your dog may need time to get comfortable again. But when a skill that once looked easy suddenly becomes difficult, it's easy to assume you're back at the beginning. You'll hear: Why hesitation after a break or change doesn't automatically mean your dog has forgotten what they learned How Fitz's nail filing changes when a new board or time away makes something familiar feel different How smaller steps can help your dog rebuild confidence without treating one difficult day like a complete setback Press play if one difficult training session has ever made you wonder whether all the progress you've worked for was suddenly gone. One puppy already has you exhausted. Getting them a playmate can sound like the perfect way to take some of that energy off your plate. But bringing home a second puppy doesn't automatically make raising the first one easier. Two puppies close in age can mean twice the training, twice the management, and challenges you never expected, especially when they become more dependent on each other than comfortable being apart. You'll hear: Why adding a second puppy can make the dog training problems you're already struggling with harder What people call littermate syndrome and how it can affect puppies who aren't actually siblings How separate training, walks, and everyday experiences can help two young dogs build confidence independently Press play if you're considering a second puppy to make life easier or already raising two young dogs and wondering why everything suddenly feels harder. “Just bring him. He’ll be fine.” It sounds simple when you’re not the one who knows exactly what could happen if he isn’t. Sometimes the exhausting part of knowing your dog isn’t making the decision. It’s having to explain that decision over and over to people who don’t understand why something easy for their dog isn’t easy for yours. And when you're managing dog behavior that other people don't see or understand, even the simplest decisions can feel like something you have to defend. You'll hear: Why even well-meaning comments can leave you feeling like you have to defend your dog Why Fitz spends family gatherings happily away from the chaos What changes when you stop trying to convince everyone else that you know what your dog needs Press play if you’re tired of explaining decisions about your dog that you already know are right. If your dog struggles with something, it can feel like you're supposed to train until they don't. But does your dog actually need to handle every situation in the first place? Halloween brings that pressure out fast. Doorbells, costumes, kids, strangers, and plenty of advice about getting your dog ready for all of it. Sometimes the better question is whether they need to participate at all. You'll hear: Why skipping something isn't automatically the same as giving up on your dog Why Em stopped treating Halloween as something Fitz needed to learn to handle The question to ask before turning another difficult situation into a training project Press play if you've ever felt guilty for protecting your dog from something instead of teaching them to tolerate it. You can have strong beliefs about what you would never do with a dog. Then one dog comes along and makes you question all of them. Kylie never expected Maya to need the kind of tools she once saw as punishment. But when safety, reactivity, and separation anxiety changed their daily life, figuring out what worked meant confronting some of her own beliefs about what being a good dog parent was supposed to look like. You'll hear: Why Kylie felt so much guilt using tools she'd never considered with another dog What changed after multiple trainers couldn't give Maya what she needed How seeing Maya's life get bigger forced Kylie to rethink what she'd once believed Press play if your dog has ever needed something that made you question your own idea of being a good dog parent. Nothing about your life with your dog changed. Then you scrolled past someone else's version of it, and suddenly yours didn't feel like enough. Perfect bowls, elaborate enrichment, matching gear, picture-ready spaces. None of it means your dog has a better life, but seeing enough of it can make you question things you were perfectly happy with before. You'll hear: How ordinary dog care quietly became something we're expected to perform Why Em still catches herself comparing even when she knows better The question that matters more than whether your life with your dog looks like anyone else's Press play if you've ever looked at someone else's dog life and wondered if you should be doing more. Halloween is still weeks away, but your dog already seems a little less able to handle things they normally would. October changes more than what shows up on your porch. Your walks move, the afternoons get busier, the weather changes, and your dog's normal routine can quietly look very different before Halloween night ever arrives. You'll hear: The small October changes that can make ordinary situations harder for your dog Why one seemingly minor trigger can suddenly cause a much bigger reaction What Em changes for Fitz and Toby instead of trying to keep their routine exactly the same Press play if your dog seems more reactive or on edge this month and you can't point to one obvious reason why. Most dog products are just things we buy. Every once in a while, one changes something much bigger than expected. At SuperZoo, I asked pet brands about the moment they realized something they made had genuinely changed someone's day to day life with their dog. Their answers went far beyond whether the product worked, and some of them got emotional telling me why. You'll hear: The everyday problems that became easier because someone finally had the right tool The stories behind products that helped dogs get back to things their families thought they had lost The moments that made the people behind these brands realize who they were actually helping Press play if you've ever wondered how much difference one thing you buy for your dog can really make. You run it again because surely one more try is the one that finally clicks. But somewhere along the way, more effort stops moving either of you forward. It can be hard to call a training session when something still isn't working, especially when stopping feels like giving up. You gave your dog the walk, the fetch, the training, and somehow you're the only one ready to collapse. Buying something for your dog is easy. Knowing whether it’s actually worth your money is the harder part. Some of the most useful details about a product never become the headline on the package. At SuperZoo, I talked with the people behind a wide range of dog brands about what they’ve learned after their products reached real customers, including the feedback that changed what they make and the features people often don’t discover until after they buy. Building your life around your dog can feel completely right and still leave room for the question you don’t always want to ask: Did I make the right call? Big decisions rarely come with proof that everything is going to work out. When your work, finances, routines, and future have all been shaped by the dog beside you, even seeing those choices pay off doesn’t always make the uncertainty disappear. You did the long walk. You played fetch until your arm gave out. And somehow your dog is still pacing around the house like the day just started. “Tire them out” sounds like good advice when your dog has endless energy, but more activity doesn’t always lead to a calmer dog. Sometimes the thing you’re doing to wear them out is actually winding them up even more, leaving you exhausted and your dog still unable to settle. You'll hear: Why doing more exercise and activity can leave your dog more wired instead of more tired How the type of activity you choose can change what happens after the game, walk, or play session ends What I had to change with Fitz when throwing the ball longer and doing more wasn’t getting us any closer to calm Press play if you keep trying to tire your dog out and can’t figure out why they still won’t settle. The creators you trust the most have opinions about this industry they don't usually put in a caption. At Superzoo in August, instead of collecting swag and taking panel photos, three questions got asked to creator after creator, not the polished, brand-deal-ready answers you see on Instagram, but the real ones. What brand would they actually recommend if nobody was paying them to say it. What myth about training, nutrition, or behavior got busted for them personally. And what's happening behind the scenes in this industry that never makes it into a caption. Nobody had to be honest. They could have given the pitch. They didn't. You'll hear: The specific brands and products creators actually stand behind, the ones they'd recommend even without a partnership attached The training, nutrition, and behavior myths that got busted for people who work in this space every day, and what changed their minds What multiple creators admitted about this being a business first, even when the content doesn't feel like one Press play if you've ever scrolled through dog content wondering which recommendations were real and which ones were paid for. Your dog can learn the tasks perfectly at home and still not be capable of doing the job of a service dog. I wanted Fitz to be a service dog badly enough to train him myself. He learned real tasks, including retrieval, deep pressure therapy, and migraine alerts. At home, he was good at them. Then we went out in public, and the dog I hoped he could become collided with the dog actually standing in front of me. Because learning the tasks is only one part of what a service dog has to be able to do. You'll hear: Why a dog can successfully learn service dog tasks at home and still struggle with what the job requires in public What happened when I had to separate what I needed Fitz to become from what he was actually capable of Why changing the plan doesn't mean the training was wasted or that your dog failed Press play if you've ever looked at your dog and wondered if they could become a service dog, or had to accept that what you hoped they could do wasn't what they were actually capable of. There's a version of your life with this dog that you pictured a while back. It doesn't look anything like the one you're actually living now, and somehow that's become other people's business. At some point you stopped going to the places that used to be part of every week together, without ever deciding it in one clear moment. You just noticed what actually worked for your dog and kept doing that instead. People who only see the outside of it tend to have an opinion either way, and it rarely matches what building this actually took. You can be completely at peace with how you live now and still catch yourself defending it anyway. You'll hear: The surprising reason a dog can be perfectly fine with strangers but bark at the people he already knows, and what that has to do with his past The two contradicting comments that show up no matter which way you go, and why neither one is actually about your dog The moment that turns "I gave something up" into "I built something that fits," and how to tell which one you're actually standing in Press play if you've ever had to explain a life that makes complete sense to you and to no one else in the room. You've said it out loud before anyone's hand even moves. Somehow you're still the one bracing for what happens next. Most people don't think there's anything to ask permission for when a dog looks friendly enough to grab, so the asking never happens. You end up being the one who has to say something, again, with every new person who doesn't bother to check first. You can be completely right about what your dog needs and still feel your shoulders tense the moment a stranger walks through the door. You'll hear: The night a guest was told plainly to leave a dog alone, ignored it, and what that dog did in response The quiet signals a nervous dog gives off long before anyone notices, the kind that get missed in a room full of people Why you don't have to defend your dog's limits to a new person every single time, and the shift that finally made that stick Press play if you've ever stood there weighing whether to speak up, already knowing exactly how it would go if you didn't. Somewhere in your house right now is a supplement you bought after one comment section convinced you it mattered, sitting next to a bag of food you're not sure you'll finish before switching again. Caring about your dog's food, training, and health doesn't come with an answer key, and the more you research, the less certain you often feel, not because you're getting something wrong, but because every product comes with a comment section arguing both sides. This isn't about being disorganized or indecisive. It's what happens when you love something that can't tell you in words whether you got it right. You'll hear: Why researching more about your dog's food or training can leave you feeling less confident instead of more The real reason behind constantly switching dog food, and why it usually has nothing to do with the food itself What changes when you stop trying to carry every decision about your dog alone Press play if you've got an abandoned cart of dog products right now and need to hear that caring this much was never the problem.
