What if you had an alter ego you could call on when you didn’t feel like working out, making the better choice with food, or doing what you know you need to do? That’s the idea behind the alter ego effect. And it’s not about pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about using the strengths, values, and beliefs you already have when things get hard. We talk about how we’ve been using alter egos ourselves, including how asking “What would an athlete do?” helped with workouts, food choices, and those times when the motivation just wasn’t there. Because you don’t have to feel motivated first. Sometimes you take action, and the feelings start to follow. We also talk about how to create your own alter ego, when to use it, and even how things like music can help. So if you find yourself debating and negotiating with yourself when you’re trying to lose weight, get fit, or reach a goal, this might be something worth trying. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? How do you stop emotional eating when food has become your go-to response to stress, frustration, loneliness, or overwhelm? Emotional eating usually isn’t really about the food. It’s about what the food allows us to escape, suppress, or avoid feeling. We talk about how to sit with uncomfortable feelings instead of immediately reacting to them with food, why that’s so hard, and practical ways to create a pause and figure out what you’re actually feeling and trying to escape from. If you struggle with emotional eating or stress eating, the answer probably isn’t more willpower. It’s learning what’s happening before you reach for food so you can respond instead of react. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Eric Nystrom played 10 seasons in the NHL. Nearly 600 games. And over a career that long, he learned a lot about what happens when things aren't going your way. Because even when you know you're doing the right things, the results don't always show up right away. Sometimes you have to keep going. Sometimes you have to have a short memory and move on from a mistake. And sometimes you have to be honest enough to admit that what worked for you before doesn't work anymore. That's a big part of what we get into in this conversation with Eric. We talk about the pressure of playing professional hockey, the self-doubt he felt even after making it to the NHL, and what happened when the structure and accountability he'd had his entire life suddenly disappeared. We also talk about consistency, dealing with setbacks, knowing when to stick with what you're doing, life after professional sports, and why Eric's approach to health and exercise looks a whole lot different today than it did when he was playing. It's a really good conversation about what it actually looks like to keep showing up when nobody's making you do it anymore. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? We’ve all been there. If we can’t do something perfectly, sometimes we just don’t do it at all. So we skip the workout because we only have 15 minutes. We throw the whole day away because lunch didn’t go as planned. And somewhere in the middle of all that, we wonder why we’re constantly running on empty. In this episode, we get into why that all-or-nothing thinking can leave you feeling burned out, what it does to your mood, your stress, and even your relationship with food. And the answer isn’t doing more. It’s doing something consistently, even when it’s small and even when it’s not all that exciting. If you’ve ever felt edgy, burned out, or out of control around food, this one might connect a few dots you didn’t expect. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? The end of summer has a way of testing everything. School starts, work picks back up, and the healthy habits and routines you worked so hard to build feel like they're slipping. Most people fall off their diet and fitness routine not because they were never taught how to be resilient. And THAT's the skill that separates people who reach their health and fitness goals from the ones who keep starting over. And the good news is that skill isn't something you're born with. It's something you build. The more you use it, the more you have it. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most people think motivation is what gets you to exercise. But after doing this for a long time, there are still plenty of days where motivation just isn't there. In this episode we talk about something that almost always fixes that. It's free, it's fun, and most people already have it. We get into how to use it to get moving when you don't feel like it, how to use it to get through cravings, and some specific strategies most people have never thought of. It might be the most underused tool in health and fitness. And once you hear it, you'll probably want to use it today. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? There’s always something coming up. A trip. A new job. A busy time at work. So you tell yourself you’ll start losing weight or get back on track with your health and fitness when things finally calm down. The problem is, that time almost never comes. And if you keep waiting for the perfect time to start losing weight or start working on your health, there’s a good chance you’ll still be waiting six months from now. In this episode, we talk about why there’s never a wrong time to start working on your health, why a busy and chaotic time of life can actually be an advantage, and how to adjust your expectations based on what’s going on in your life instead of waiting for perfect conditions. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? You're doing everything you can to eat better and take care of yourself. And then you get home and find brownies on the counter. Or you go out with friends and someone says "you're not fun anymore." Or "I miss the old you." It feels personal. But here's what most people don't realize. The people closest to you who seem to be working against you usually aren't doing it on purpose. There's a very real, very human reason this keeps happening. And once you understand it, it stops feeling like a personal attack and starts feeling a lot more manageable. In this episode we get into why the people around you sabotage your weight loss and healthy eating, what's actually driving it, and the strategies that help you navigate it without damaging the relationships that matter most to you. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most people assume they keep falling off their diet because they don't have the right plan. Or enough willpower. Or enough motivation. But what if the real reason is something most people never think to look at? In this episode we get into patterns, the invisible chains of behaviors that run on autopilot and quietly keep you stuck in the same place no matter how hard you try. We cover how patterns form, how to spot them, and why you don't have to overhaul everything to change them. Sometimes you just have to find the first domino. If you've ever thought "here I go again" and couldn't figure out why, this episode might finally explain why. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years, and one of the questions I get asked more than any other is: “Why can’t I lose weight?” It’s a fair question. But over the years, I’ve become convinced that most people are looking for the answer in the wrong place. We assume we need a better meal plan. More discipline. A different workout. Better timing. And while those things can certainly matter, I’ve found that one of the biggest reasons people stay stuck is because they keep asking food to solve problems food was never designed to solve. In this episode, we talk about why cravings happen, how to tell the difference between physical and emotional hunger, and why understanding what’s driving your eating is often far more powerful than finding another diet or weight loss strategy. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why can’t I lose weight?”, I think this episode will give you a completely different way to think about the answer. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? You'd think after years of coaching people through this, sugar cravings would stop being a problem. They're not. Cravings don't care how experienced you are or how long you've been at this. What actually changes things isn't willpower. It's knowing which strategy to use and when. In this episode, we break down seven ways to stop sugar cravings for good, covering everything from sleep and dopamine to environment, timing, and what's really driving the craving underneath the sugar itself. If you've ever felt like you're constantly losing this fight, this episode is about learning how to finally win it. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most people assume that always feeling hungry and never feeling full is a willpower problem. So they restrict more, try harder, and wonder why nothing ever changes. But there's not just one reason behind hunger. And if you're solving for the wrong problem, you'll always feel hungry no matter what you do. In this episode we break down six reasons you might always feel hungry and never full. Some of them are about what's happening in your body when you eat. Some are about the foods themselves. And at least one has nothing to do with food at all. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most people blame their diet when they can't lose weight. They switch plans, try new approaches, and start over more times than they can count. But what if the real problem has nothing to do with what they're eating? In this episode we get into confirmation bias and how it quietly sabotages weight loss progress. We cover what confirmation bias actually is, why it has nothing to do with effort or discipline, and how to start recognizing it before it derails you again. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still not seeing results, this episode might finally explain why. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most people think the problem is the food. The cookie. The ice cream. The unplanned dinner that got away from them. But after 19 years of working with weight loss clients, here's what we've learned. It's never the food. It's what happens right after. That one thought that turns a single slip into a reason to throw the whole day away. Sometimes the whole week. Sometimes longer. In this episode we get into why that thought is the real enemy of weight loss consistency, what separates the people who actually reach their goals from the ones who keep starting over, and the one habit that makes all the difference. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Nighttime cravings and eating after dinner might be the single most common struggle we hear about from clients. And if you've ever found yourself in the kitchen at 9pm knowing you're not really hungry, you already know how frustrating it can be. In this episode we cover the tactics that actually help in the moment, and more importantly, why those tactics alone are never quite enough. Because nighttime eating is almost never about food. It's about what the food is doing for you. What it helps you escape. What void it's quietly filling. Once you understand that, everything starts to change. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most of us have had this thought at least one. "I'm just not ready to lose weight." And on the surface, it feels true. But what if that belief is actually getting in the way of the progress you're trying to make? The problem isn't readiness. It's overwhelm. And those two things feel identical in the moment but lead to very different solutions. In this episode, we break down why feeling overwhelmed gets mistaken for not being ready, how that assumption quietly keeps people stuck in the same weight loss loop, and what to do the next time that voice shows up. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most of us know what we should do. We know we should skip the late night snack. We know we should do the workout. We know we should be honest when a day doesn't go as planned. But knowing and doing are two very different things. And the gap between them isn't willpower. It's the small uncomfortable moments we keep avoiding, day after day, without even realizing it. In this episode, we get into why stepping into that discomfort, not around it, is the fastest way to level up your health and fitness. And what that actually looks like in real life. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? You don’t need more motivation. You need a different version of you showing up at the right time. We’re talking about the alter ego effect and how to use it as a tactic to stay consistent with your health and fitness. Because the version of you who gets it done already exists. You just haven’t been using it on purpose. We’ll show you how to tap into that version, especially in the moments where things usually fall apart, like late at night, on the weekends, or when life gets busy. * Tried every diet out there and nothing sticks? Most of us know what stuffed feels like. We know what a food coma feels like. But that sweet spot of finishing a meal feeling light, comfortable, and actually good? For a lot of us, that's rare. And it's not a willpower problem. It's that most of us eat too fast, get distracted, or never learned to check in with ourselves during a meal. In this episode, we share the tactics we use with our own clients to help them finish meals feeling light and satisfied.
