John Sarno made his mark in the mind-body world by challenging one powerful assumption: that chronic pain is caused by a broken body. Instead, he proposed that the brain could generate symptoms in response to a perceived threat. What if those exact same principles apply to insomnia? Well, I believe they do. In this episode, I break down how Sarno’s work applies directly to sleep—and why insomnia may have far more in common with chronic pain than a sleep disorder. We’ll look at three key mechanisms that keep insomnia going—and once you see them, it will completely change how you understand what’s happening in your body. This episode is my small ode of gratitude to Dr. John Sarno. “How long until this goes away?” It’s a question almost everyone asks and it’s the one that keeps us stuck. In this episode, we talk about hyperarousal, timeline thinking, the waiting game, and why recovery begins when you start living instead of waiting. We also talk about: Why insomnia isn’t something you have, but something the brain learns to do How timeline pressure can actually keep the nervous system activated Why putting life on hold keeps sleep on a pedestal The paradox that recovery often begins when you stop waiting for it to end If you’ve been stuck in the “when will this end?” loop, this episode will help you see recovery from a completely different perspective. Wondering what true recovery actually looks? Feel like sleep is the ONLY sign that things are getting better? Wish you had a clearer sense of whether you’re on the right track? This episode is for you. Most of us who struggle with insomnia are driven, type-A, perfectionistic overachievers. We love a clear plan. A step-by-step path. Boxes to check. Milestones feel reassuring because they show our brain that progress is happening. But insomnia recovery doesn’t unfold in that neat, linear way. A when the milestones aren’t obvious, it can feel confusing… or even discouraging. In this episode, I’m going to walk you through 10 common signs that healing is happening, even if sleep itself hasn’t come back online yet. A few highlights: Why recovery feels more like a cha-cha dance than a straight line The real metric of success in insomnia recovery Why sleep itself isn’t actually the solution to insomnia What usually begins to change BEFORE sleep becomes consistent again If you’ve been wondering whether you’re moving forward or spinning your wheels, this episode will help you see the ways progress is already unfolding. Recovery isn’t just about getting your sleep back. It’s about getting your LIFE back. 🧡 Related Episodes: Ep 3: Dancing with Insomnia: Part 1 Ep 4: Dancing with Insomnia: Part 2 Connect with Beth: 👉 Instagram Work with Beth: 👉 Learn About the Mind. When I had insomnia, I couldn’t figure out why anything having to do with sleep felt so GIGANTIC in my mind. Every nuance, every sensation, every night felt more critical than the last. It was very life-or-death to me. What I didn’t realize at the time was: There was a perfectly logical reason for this. My brain wasn’t malfunctioning. It was doing exactly what brains are designed to do. It was filtering IN what mattered most. And filtering OUT what didn't. Who knew? And because not sleeping had become such an emotionally charged experience in my life, my brain learned to amplify every thought, sensation, and scenario around that exact thing. In this episode, I break down the neuroscience behind focus and explain why insomnia can feel so all-consuming. Tune in to learn: Why focus isn’t always something you choose How the brain’s filtering system determines what dominates your awareness Why sleep starts to feel urgent and impossible during insomnia How meaning shapes attention Why lasting change comes from new perspectives If sleep has taken over your thoughts, your days, or your sense of safety in the world, this episode will help you understand WHY, and gently point you in a new direction forward. In this encore episode, I dive into the surprising reason your brain won’t let you sleep at night, even when nothing is actually wrong. You’ll learn: Why insomnia is rooted in survival, not broken sleep How wakefulness becomes linked with fear The role hyperarousal plays in keeping the cycle alive The difference between real danger and perceived threat Why trying to fix sleep often backfires How understanding the brain supports real, lasting recovery This conversation reveals how perceived danger, not wakefulness itself, keeps insomnia going, and how neuroplasticity allows the brain to unlearn fear and return to sleep naturally. In this deeply relatable episode, Carlos shares his honest journey through insomnia. After years of overthinking and long sleep onset, a period of intense work stress pushed his nervous system into full-blown survival mode, and not sleeping became something his brain perceived as a threat. Like so many others, Carlos did what we're told to do: CBT-I, sleep restriction, breathing exercises, supplements, medications, and constant sleep monitoring — only to find that the harder he tried, the worse it got. In this conversation, Beth and Carlos explore the deeper truth behind insomnia: Sleep isn’t something you need to produce. It’s something the body does naturally all on its own. Emily’s insomnia started with a single sleepless night. She’d stayed up late before, but always on purpose. This time, the choice wasn't hers. And that loss of control left her feeling scared, confused, and convinced something inside her must be broken. What followed next was a cycle she didn’t understand: long nights, constant clock-watching, dread as the sun went down, and days shaped entirely around preventing another bad night. She turned to movement, routines, and eventually medication, but nothing brought lasting relief. Sleep became the center of her life. Her turning point came when she realized she couldn’t keep rearranging her world around insomnia. Inside the mentorship, she learned about hyperarousal, let go of rigid rules, and began loosening her grip on sleep. Slowly, her nervous system settled. What once had her spiraling felt less threatening over time. Eventually, trust came to the forefront again. Her insight captures it perfectly: “Of course my body will remember how to sleep.” Today, sleep is no longer something she chases. It happens naturally while she lives her life. Enjoy! In this foundational episode, Beth is joined by Mind. Body. Sleep.® co-coach Richard Wills to explore one of the most important — and least understood — aspects of insomnia recovery: hyperarousal. Together, they unpack what hyperarousal really is, how it shows up in the body and mind, and why it’s the true obstacle standing between you and effortless sleep. You’ll learn the four types of hyperarousal and how each one can subtly (or not so subtly) keep the brain on high alert. Beth and Richard share personal insights, relatable stories, and practical ways to help your brain stand down from perceived threats so sleep can re-emerge on its own. If you’ve ever wondered why your body feels wired when you feel tired, this conversation will bring clarity, relief, and a renewed sense of hope. Beth spent 42 years chasing sleep. Until one day, she realized the very effort to “fix” insomnia was the exact thing keeping her stuck. What followed wasn’t another hack, routine, or bedtime ritual. It was a complete shift in how she related to sleep itself. In this episode, Beth shares three transformational mindsets that quietly ended her lifelong battle with insomnia. You’ll hear how ownership (without blame) restores power, why the fixing loop is a trap in disguise, and how living as if you’re already free creates the conditions for natural sleep to return. If you’ve been doing all the “right” things and still feel trapped in the same old cycle, this one will turn everything you thought you knew about insomnia upside down. In this episode, I explore what I consider the single most powerful tool for overcoming insomnia — your response. When it comes to long-term recovery, it’s not about finding a magic sleep trick or trying harder to force sleep. It’s about how you respond to the experience of insomnia itself. We’ll look at what happens when the brain’s hyperarousal system misinterprets sleeplessness as danger and how to shift that conditioned response back toward safety. You’ll learn how cultivating awareness, compassion, and curiosity rewires the brain through self-directed neuroplasticity — and why it’s not about doing more, but about doing less and trusting your body’s innate wisdom. If you’ve ever felt trapped in the cycle of trying to sleep harder, this episode offers a refreshing and hopeful perspective that can help you step off the hamster wheel and truly recover. Takeaways: Your response is your most powerful recovery tool. Safety, not effort, is what restores natural sleep. Compassion and awareness are the antidotes to hyperarousal. You can teach your brain that it’s safe to sleep. Ever feel like your insomnia was FINALLY gone… only to have it come back for no apparent reason? This used to drive me absolutely bananas. Insomnia can vanish for weeks, months—or even years at a time, and then reappear without warning. No wonder it's so confusing. But once I learned how memory works and how the brain stores experiences, it started to make a lot more sense. In this episode, you'll learn: Why the cyclical nature of insomnia points to a mind-body loop (not a broken brain) How unconscious “imprints” get reactivated What it really means when insomnia “comes back” Why flare-ups aren’t “setbacks” but chances to update old wiring The good news? The brain can rewire. So past triggers lose their grip—and you get to step fully into your life again 🧡 Mentioned Resources: Why Your Insomnia Triggers Are Mostly Unconscious Connect with Beth: 👉 Instagram Work with Beth: 👉 Learn About the Mind. Can't stop thinking about your sleep? Wondering how to get back to clarity? Feel like you're just spinning your wheels? Sounds pretty normal to me. In fact, confusion is often a sign that something deeper is happening beneath the surface. In this episode, I talk about what overthinking really is, why it shows up during recovery, and how to relate to it in a way that helps you move through it so clarity returns on its own. This one’s for my fellow overthinkers. ❤ Connect with Beth: 👉 Instagram Work with Beth: 👉 Learn About the Mind. Body. Sleep. Stuck in the research loop with insomnia? You’re not alone. When sleep becomes unpredictable, researching feels like the next best thing to do. Because at least you're doing something … right? But what if that something is quietly reinforcing the very problem you’re trying to solve? In this episode, Beth and Michelle talk about why it’s so easy to get trapped in the research loop, and why it’s so hard to get out. Listen as we explore: Why researching creates the illusion of safety How it keeps us stuck in fear instead of freedom Why true recovery begins when you stop searching for it If you’ve been operating from the belief that more knowledge equals more sleep, this conversation will gently challenge that idea—and invite you into a new one. Have you ever wondered what actually makes insomnia recovery possible? In this episode, I talk about exactly that. We explore one of the most hopeful principles of neuroplasticity — and why it’s the reason getting beyond insomnia isn't just possible… but inevitable when you understand how the brain works. T he human brain has the amazing capacity to change associations and shift links. And truly, is there anything more miraculous than that? In this episode, you’ll learn how: Your responses play a key role in rewiring the brain Insomnia isn’t a sign that something is broken, but a conditioned pattern rooted in hyperarousal Changing your brain’s association with wakefulness can be a turning point in recovery I also share a personal story that illustrates how learned fear responses can shift, and why that same shift is completely possible for you, too. I had such a lovely time sitting down with Liz, a psychotherapist and alum of the Mind. Body. Sleep. mentorship. Not only did Liz make it through insomnia herself, but she stayed active in the community to support others still on their way. Like so many of us, she tried everything: Impeccable sleep hygiene CBT-I Sleep meds But the more she tried, the more fear crept in. Not just a fear of not sleeping, but a fear of fear itself. Which is such a common part of this journey. This episode is filled with heart and insight. A few standout moments: “Not only was I afraid of not sleeping, I was afraid of fear.” “You don’t have to heal everything to sleep again.” “Even a little bit of self-compassion is powerful.” If your nervous system feels stuck in high gear, or you’ve lost trust with your body, Liz’s story will help you feel so much less alone. Enjoy! 🧡 Mentioned Resources: Liz is licensed in both South Carolina and Illinois. If you’ve gone through insomnia recovery and are looking for excellent aftercare, I can’t recommend her enough.
