Working for Progress is a podcast about work, wellbeing, and what it means to live a meaningful life. Hosted by social entrepreneur Dani Trudeau and rooted in the community of Tribe Porty in Edinburgh, each season explores a theme, The Body , through honest, unhurried conversations with people who are shaping their working lives with intention. These aren't interviews about career advice or productivity hacks. They're deeper conversations about values, identity, creativity, burnout, purpose, and the quiet grit behind the work people do. If you love podcasts like On Being or The Pause , and you're asking bigger questions about how you want to work and live, this is for you. Available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

Caroline Gibb is a Community Development Lead working in palliative care, supporting individuals and communities through dying, caring, and grief. In this conversation, she talks with Dani about what it means to hold emotionally demanding work while living with chronic illness and pain. The conversation is also about a body that behaves unpredictably, never quite the same from one day to the next. They talk about the strange gifts hidden inside perimenopause, the discipline of showing up for other people's grief when your own body has other plans, and what it means to keep working when "listening to your body" isn't a wellness slogan but a daily negotiation. Part of The Body , a season of Working For Progress about how we inhabit ourselves at work. Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. Sometimes in life there are defining moments that set us on a path. For Isobel Mercer, one came while riding on the back of a motorbike through miles of decimated palm-oil plantations. When she finally reached the lush rainforest beyond, the stark contrast between destruction and life left an imprint that would shape her future. Originally from Devon, Isobel moved to Edinburgh in 2008 to study politics and quickly fell in love with the city. For more than a decade, she has dedicated her career to climate and nature policy, working to persuade politicians and policymakers to take urgent, evidence-based action on the climate and nature crisis. Today, she leads political engagement in Scotland for Uplift, a non-profit focused on ensuring the UK transitions away from oil and gas in a way that protects workers, communities, and the planet we share. In this WFP conversation, Dani and Isobel explore what drives long-term activism, the balance between urgency and hope, and the personal moments that root us in purpose. A much-loved member of the Tribe Porty community, Isobel is often joined at Tribe by her Jack Russell, Tattie, who has his own fondness for lunchtime walks on the beach. What does it take to stay human inside powerful legal systems? In this episode of Working For Progress , Dani is joined by Andrea Fraser , a Civil Justice Lawyer at JUSTICE, whose career has spanned employment law, human rights, public inquiries, and some of the most challenging legal cases of our time. Andrea’s path has taken her from early practice at Anderson Strathern, to leading investigations into historic abuse within religious institutions at the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, to working alongside Edward Fitzgerald QC at Doughty Street Chambers on international death-penalty appeals before the Privy Council. But this conversation goes beyond CV highlights. Together, Dani and Andrea explore what it means to confront institutional harm without becoming hardened by it, how hope survives inside slow and imperfect systems, and why fairness is not just a legal principle but a deeply human one. It’s a thoughtful, honest reflection on power, accountability, and the quiet determination required to keep pushing for reform. A conversation about law and the people who refuse to give up on it. In this episode, Dani speaks with Paul Lambie — writer, designer, poet, and community gatherer, known to many as Poetry Paul and Paul's Props. Paul's path has taken him from the world of TV and film to becoming a full-time stay-at-home dad — a shift that raised bigger questions about identity, creativity, and what progress actually looks like when it doesn't follow a straight line. They talk about why he keeps creating spaces for people to gather — from soup nights in his home to the In Progress Poetry Social at Till's Bookshop — and what words and community have given him that a conventional career couldn't. A warm, funny, and quietly radical conversation about choosing a different kind of working life. Find Paul's substack here . In this episode, Dani speaks with Dawn Thomson, energy psychologist, relationships coach, and one of the original TEDxPortobello speakers, about the relationship most of us neglect the most: the one with ourselves. Dawn's work sits at the intersection of love, sex, and self. Her newest project, Fancy Yourself, is an invitation to stop waiting for external validation and start genuinely backing yourself — emotionally, physically, and in the life you want to build. They talk about how to have better relationships, how to recognise when a dynamic has stopped working, and why developing a deep, confident relationship with yourself might be the most important work any of us can do. A warm and honest conversation about self-worth, intimacy, and what it means to truly fancy yourself. Please note: this episode includes discussion of sex and a mention of sexual trauma. In this episode, Dani speaks with Maureen Evans, executive coach, Pilates teacher, and founder of two practices built around movement and leadership development. Maureen's path is an unexpected one: from a degree in pure mathematics and a career in risk consulting and audit, to running a wellness studio and coaching leaders across the globe. This conversation begins to explore what drew her from one world to the other, and what movement has taught her that the boardroom couldn't. A quieter, more reflective episode, but one that sits with some interesting questions about the paths we take, the skills we carry across them, and what it means to lead from a place of wholeness. In this episode, Dani speaks with Julie Cluley, dog behaviour coach and creator of Peaceful Paws, a course and community that brings together 3P coaching and Dog Listening to help dog trainers work in a calmer, more sustainable way. Julie talks honestly about burnout. What it looked like for her, and the shift in thinking that followed. Paradoxically, she's now doing more than ever, but without the overwhelm. That change didn't come from doing less, it came from thinking differently. A conversation about sustainable work, the stories we tell ourselves, and what it looks like to find genuine ease on the other side of exhaustion. In this episode, Dani speaks with Matilda Mayne , mental skills coach and performance psychology consultant based in Edinburgh, working with athletes, businesses, and academic institutions on resilience and coping with pressure. Matilda's life's work is understanding stress, not as something to eliminate, but as something to develop a better relationship with. And she doesn't just study it. She's lived it: through triathlons, competitions, and yes, MMA fighting. They talk about what happens when we push ourselves to our limits, why we're drawn to extremes, and the surprising case for rawdogging, enduring difficulty without distraction, as a path to genuine mental strength. A funny, fascinating, and genuinely energising conversation about stress, sport, and what we're all capable of. Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. In this episode, Dani speaks with Hannah Low, Chinese-Scottish actor, writer, and maker of vibrant, narrative-led work for stage, whose credits span Netflix, BBC Scotland, and the Royal Lyceum Theatre. Hannah talks about her deep love for drama and storytelling. Where it comes from, what it gives her, and why it remains the thing she keeps coming back to. They also touch on the reality of building a creative career: the funding uncertainty, the persistence it requires, and how genuine joy can be both the reason you do it and the thing that sustains you. In this episode, Dani speaks with Loretta Dunn. Life Celebrant, Death Doula, nurse, midwife, and one of those rare people who seems to hold the full span of human experience with extraordinary grace. Loretta's work sits at the threshold between life and death, and this conversation follows her there. She speaks about the formative experiences that shaped her path, including her years working abroad in healthcare, and offers a deeply considered frame for understanding dying not as an ending but as part of a circle that began at birth. There is a quality to Loretta that is hard to put into words. A mothering wisdom, a groundedness, an ability to speak about the most profound things with honesty and warmth. This conversation has that quality too. They explore what it means to confront death as a way of living more fully, and why bringing death out of the shadows might be one of the most life-affirming things we can do. In this episode, Dani speaks with Danni Gordon, former third sector project manager, personal assistant, and self-confessed lover of helping people get things done. Danni joined the conversation while on extended maternity leave, at one of those in-between moments where the next chapter of working life is coming into view but hasn't quite taken shape yet. It makes for an honest and relatable conversation. They talk about the tension between productivity and parenthood, the internal conflicts that come with stepping away from work, and something that doesn't get discussed enough — the need to feel genuinely valued in the jobs we give so much to. A candid, warm conversation about work, worth, and what we want the next chapter to look like. Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. In this episode, Dani speaks with Anna Considine. Edinburgh-based brand photographer, founder of Studio Gently, and new member of Tribe Porty, Anana talks about what it really takes to build a business that doesn't cost you your health. Anna speaks openly about the joy of starting something of your own, and with equal honesty about what happened when work became all-consuming. Her experience of overworking led to a psychotic episode, a turning point that changed how she works, what she values, and the kind of spaces she now tries to create for her clients. A raw, generous conversation about mental health, boundaries, and what it means to put your values at the centre of your work. In this episode, Dani speaks with Ellie Morag, photographer, community gatherer, and a previous member of the Tribe Porty team. Ellie's working life has long revolved around photography and connecting with people. But she's at an interesting moment; curious about what else she might do, and what the next chapter looks like beyond the lens. That curiosity led her to volunteering with CreativeMornings Edinburgh, and eventually to starting her own gathering, Soapbox; born from a simple belief that bringing people together matters, and that she wanted to be someone who makes it happen. A gentle conversation about creative work, community, and the quiet question of what comes next. Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. In this episode, Dani speaks with Reema Vadoliya, founder of People of Data and a passionate advocate for putting humanity at the heart of how we gather, interpret, and use data. Reema's central argument is a simple but radical one: data is never just facts. Behind every dataset are real people, real lives, and real consequences. The way we handle data either reflects that or ignores it. After seven years working across the data industry, she launched People of Data to change that. They talk about what drew Reema to this work, why inclusion in data matters beyond the boardroom, and what it actually looks like to be more human than we think we need to be. A thought-provoking conversation about stories, systems, and the people that numbers can't fully capture. Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. In this episode, Dani speaks with Keith Kirkwood. Senior Technical Writer by day, drummer and percussionist by night, and someone whose brain operates in two very different registers. Keith's working life is built around making complexity clear, crafting user guides and help systems that turn the intricate into the accessible. Away from the desk, he's been drumming since his twenties and currently plays with Edinburgh group Idiogram. On the surface these feel like opposite worlds. In conversation, the connections are more interesting than they first appear. They talk about how Keith's mind works, what draws him to precision and language, and what rhythm and music give him that words alone can't. A thoughtful conversation about the different parts of ourselves we bring to our work, and the parts we keep just for ourselves. 3di IDIOGRAM Working For Progress is hosted by Dani Trudeau and produced by Alice Hudson. In this episode, Dani speaks with Emma Christie, psychological thriller writer, Portobello local, and someone who has deliberately built a working life that most people only dream about. Emma's debut novel The Silent Daughter was shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime, and her work is rooted in the streets of Portobello, Edinburgh's seaside neighbourhood that also happens to be home to Tribe Porty. But it's her life beyond the page that makes this conversation sing. Emma splits her time between Portobello and Barcelona, and writes from a campervan she shares with her partner. Waking up in the mountains, opening the laptop, and writing for hours. It isn't accidental. It's a life she and her partner have consciously chosen and carefully built. They talk about creative discipline, the routine behind the freedom, and what it looks like to live and work with real integrity. An inspiring, grounding conversation about writing, adventure, and choosing your own version of progress.
