What role has the food industry played in obesity, and how are GLP-1 medications changing what companies put on grocery store shelves? Food scientist Liam Kincaid joins Kim and Bear to take us inside the science and psychology of food. They explore what makes certain foods easy to overeat, why novelty keeps us coming back, and whether sugar, preservatives, or any single ingredient deserves the blame. Liam also explains why the grams of protein on a label do not tell the whole story, how to identify higher-quality protein sources, and why adding protein does not automatically make something “GLP-1 friendly.” Plus, they discuss how GLP-1s can change cravings and food preferences, whether the food industry is trying to work around the medications’ effects, and why fiber, savory flavors, and entirely new products may shape the future of food. This is an honest conversation about food, biology, access, and why people living with obesity deserve better than blame or another shiny label. At The Plus SideZ, we believe listening to different perspectives helps us better understand one another. If this language doesn't feel right for you, it's okay to honor that boundary and skip this episode. The GLP-1 and body positivity communities are often portrayed as being at odds. But do they share more common ground than we realize? How GLP-1s Broke Diet Culture For decades, we believed weight gain and weight loss were mostly about willpower, calories, and exercise. Today, we’re learning there’s much more happening beneath the surface. The biology that drives hunger, metabolism, weight gain, and long-term health is far more complex than we once understood. In this episode, Dr. Chiadi Ndumele , preventive cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine and a leader with the American Heart Association, explains why GLP-1 medications work, how weight, metabolism, and chronic disease are connected, and why the first-ever Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Clinical Practice Guideline represents a major shift in how we understand and treat weight-related disease. You’ll also hear a powerful patient story that shows why this new understanding is giving hope to millions. In this episode: Why GLP-1 medications work when diets often don’t. What really drives weight gain, weight loss, and long-term weight management. How metabolism, hormones, genetics, and overall health work together. Why Your Body Stops Losing Weight | Dr. Michelle Gordon Hosts Kim Carlos and Kat Carter talk with obesity medicine specialist Dr. Michelle Gordon about the biological factors behind a GLP-1 weight loss plateau. If you are on a medication like tirzepatide or semaglutide and the scale stops moving, it is driven by a complex neuroendocrine response. Dr. Gordon explains that the hypothalamus operates like a stubborn thermostat, defending a specific weight set point. When you lose weight, the brain reads the change as a threat and triggers physiological defenses. To prevent further weight loss, the body increases hunger hormones and simultaneously lowers its energy expenditure. Key topics include: The Mechanism of a Stall: A weight plateau occurs at the exact point where your declining daily energy expenditure meets your rising natural hunger signals. Menopause and Fat Oxidation: Midlife hormonal shifts cause fat oxidation to drop, which alters metabolic burn rates and shifts fat storage to the stomach. The Chronic Disease Reality: Clinical data shows that stopping a GLP-1 medication typically results in regaining about two thirds of the lost weight, proving obesity requires continuous management. Muscle Mass Preservation: Rapid weight loss from any method causes muscle loss, making strength training essential to preserve lean muscle and protect long-term functional health. In this episode of The Plus SideZ Podcast, Dr. Melanie Cree, a pediatric endocrinologist, obesity researcher, and PCOS/PMOS expert, explains the recent global consensus to rename PCOS to PMOS, or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, to better reflect the condition’s metabolic and hormonal impact. Dr. Cree breaks down how delayed diagnosis and outdated understanding may have prevented many patients from getting earlier metabolic treatment and intervention. We discuss: Why so many women with PCOS were misunderstood or dismissed The connection between PCOS, PMOS, insulin resistance, obesity, and fertility Why weight gain is not just about willpower Adolescent PCOS and why early intervention matters GLP-1 medications like semaglutide for PCOS/PMOS Emerging research focused on ovulation, fertility, and metabolic health How hormones, appetite, and metabolism are connected Why the PMOS name change could improve diagnosis and treatment Dr. Cree also shares information about her ongoing research and studies exploring how GLP-1 medications may help improve metabolic and reproductive health in people with PCOS/PMOS.
