Running is the one thing that we all like talking about. Every week on the award winning Women’s Running podcast, we talk all things running, women, health and fitness with our own brand of happy, irreverent chat. Esther and Holly talk through their training highs and lows, and all the bits and pieces in-between. Every so often, we invite an expert to join us to help us figure out the confusing worlds of training, recovery, nutrition, health and more. And sometimes we get to talk to an incredible woman from the world of running, from Anna McNuff to Paula Radcliffe, Susie Chan to Nicky Spinks. So why do we do it? Because we realised that most of the running podcasts we listened to were full of blokes waffling on about quads and cadence (and we realised that we can do that perfectly well ourselves, thank you very much). Right here, we talk about all the things that affect us when we step out the door: sexism, hormones, menopause, food, pelvic floors, relationships, mental health, seagull attacks and wild weeing. But. BUT. We will also talk about races, PBs, shoes, training, starting running, enjoying running, finding the fun. And quads and cadence. This is the Women’s Running podcast, and it’s for women who love to run. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. Relaxing! And running! We’re going to leave some technical hoo-has in this ep, so you get a tantalising glimpse behind the fourth wall (oooh!). But then, because I’m on holiday, we talk about what relaxing actually looks like – if anyone has any great ideas, do please let me know. We then talk about how the first few weeks of our marathon training has been going and all the worries that go with that. Get the mag! If you’re fond of this pod, you are going to LOVE Women’s Running Magazine, and right now if you subscribe, you’ll make a hefty saving AND you’ll get a free gift of 3 Freyja resistance bands to help you get hench this summer. We want you to feel like a native down the gym, so this is our guide to figuring out your RDLs from your RPEs. As ever we chat to Kate at the end of the episode to answer your strength questions. Your homework this week is one of those ones it is glorious to know – the Romanian Deadlift – or RDL to give it its acronym – is one of those ones you’ll often hear talked about down the gym or online, and I wanted to gift this one to you so you can see firstly, how great it is, and secondly, you can throw acronyms about down the gym with abandon. It’s like a new language! This one is brilliant for your posterior chain, everything from your lower back down to your feet. Juicy bum ahoy! Welcome to episode 315 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. Heat, ADHD We’re talking about how the heat is affecting us (we’re recording in the middle of the fifth heat wave), and we have more updates on our running now that we’re emerging into the slightly spicy section of our marathon training plans. We then do a deeply controversial thing and rank race distances from best to worst! You will NOT agree! Tell us your thoughts! We also revisit our chat about ADHD and generally about neurodiversity in running. Just a note here, we are only talking about our own experiences and are not experts by any means. Welcome to episode 314 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. Marathon! We’re talking about our marathon training, and how that’s been going with all our travels over the summer. And because we’re talking about our marathon training, we feel like we need to fess up about what our marathon actually IS. I can’t say here because this is the intro, and where’s the fun in that? But we do say on the pod – not gonna tell you when, you have to listen to all our ramblings first, so there. For the first time ever, though, we’re not having a wobble about getting to the finish, we’re having a wobble about getting to the start… Magazine! Welcome to episode 313 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. Marathon madness We start with a little bit of pooing on the run content, before we launch into our BIG NEWS. Shan’t let the cat out of the bag in the show notes, as that’s no fun at all, but suffice to say we don’t have much time to train for something rather large looming in October. We talk through our rubbish plans right here. Small technical difficulties aside, we move on to huge feats of endurance over in the US, namely Badwater 135, the details of it, the myths and scandals around it, and whether or not we would ever consider doing it ourselves (um, NOPE). As ever we chat to Kate at the end of the episode to answer your strength questions. Your homework this week is one of my absolute favourites -the glute bridge. We talk through the best form, so all you have to do is squeeze and hold. 3 lots of 10 slow reps is a good place to start, before you begin to add weight. Welcome to episode 312 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. ADHD The summer holidays have started and we have thoughts about how we’re all managing that – I hope you’re all surviving and perhaps even enjoying these first few weeks. So lots to logistically negotiate, especially when it comes to running. We’re talking also cryptically about our next goals – all to be revealed soon, and how we’re navigating training over the summer with all these life things getting in the way. We go back to our chat about supplements, and we have a really interesting piece on running and ADHD to chat through. Link to that in the show notes. If you have any more questions, or you’d just like to drop us a line, we would love to hear from you at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk Gym confidence In our FIFTH episode, we’re talking about how to build up the confidence to get started in the gym. We speak to Kate at the end of the episode with a couple of burning questions, namely, will we get bulky if we lift weights, and do we need to change our strength workouts as we get older. The homework exercise focuses on a brilliant upper body exercise – the overhead press. We talk through correct form, with lots of different variations, as always starting with a very accessible move. This week, let’s try doing 3 sets of 10. And that’s it! To help you get stronger this summer, we’ve got a brilliant deal on Women’s Running magazine. Welcome to episode 311 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. Missing the long run, recovery from the ultra, and then we get on to supplements. We are not medics and we are not nutritionists, so all we’re talking through are the pills and bits we take, and the hopes we have for our health as a result. We’re going to get someone on the pod to talk some sense to us about supplements, but in the meantime, do please share what you take (if you’d like to) over on discord, on Patreon, or just email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk and we can chat through all of them with someone with a qualification to tell us what we should (or shouldn’t) be taking. And word to the wise: I am fully aware that there is virtually no supporting evidence for apple cider vinegar having any impact on cholesterol, please don’t start knocking that back because I do, it’s entirely my brother’s fault. Welcome to episode 310 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. The ballot! It’s one of those weeks where we think there’s not a lot to talk about, and then it turns out there is! For a start, we’ve gone and won ourselves an award – and one that’s, shockingly, in recognition of our services to sports podcasting! Ha! My, how we laughed. But we have a proper trophy and everything. And then we’re on to the mega debate of the London Marathon double – the ballot was last week, and I reckon approximately 2 of you got in. So well done you two! But before we get there, let’s discuss the logistics, the costs and the impact of running two major marathons back to back. We finish, as you might expect, on the very serious topic of reptile migratory patterns. The mag! If you’re fond of this pod, you are going to LOVE Women’s Running Magazine, and right now if you subscribe, you’ll make a hefty saving AND you’ll get a free gift of 3 Freyja resistance bands to help you get hench this summer. Welcome to the third episode of the Strength Project, a limited series from the makers of The Women’s Running Podcast. I’m Esther, and she’s Holly, and we are here to help! We all know that we should be strength training these days, but it’s so confusing figuring out where to start. So we’ve put together a series designed to cut through the jargon, answer your questions AND get you fitter and stronger as a result. The two of us will be here every week on a Tuesday, assisted by the gorgeous Kate, our resident PT and strength coach who can answer all the questions we can’t. If you have any more questions, or you’d just like to drop us a line, we would love to hear from you at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk Muscle ache In our third episode, we’re talking about why our muscles ache the day after a gym session, and what we need to do about it. We speak to Kate at the end of the episode about how long we should be exercising for, and how quickly we can expect to see results. The homework exercise focuses on our core. We talk through the correct form for a plank, with lots of different variations, as always starting with a very accessible move. This week, let’s try doing 3 sets of 30 seconds. And that’s it! Welcome to episode 308 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running. In this episode, one of us has been making big life choices, while the other one has been questioning her life choices. Namely, an ultra that I have to run in 30-degree heat. I say 24 – it’s crept up a bit! Ugh. I’ve got a touch of ultra maranoia, do please help me with my worries! Can I wear headphones? Should I talk to fellow runners? What sort of water bottles do I need? I also have an update from Spine Man, before we launch into a conversation with the ever-wonderful Jo Pavey! We have an Olympian in the house! Jo Pavey As we’re approaching the start of the Commonwealth Games, we thought this was an excellent time to chat to Jo, and find out more about her memories of her Games. We also talk to her about England Athletics, of which she is an ambassador – to find out more about membership of EA for solo runners. Something we can all do now, without joining a club, if we don’t want to. We come back afterwards to address some emails we have had in as a result of our chat about coils and HRT. If you’re fond of this pod, you are going to LOVE Women’s Running Magazine, and right now if you subscribe, you’ll make a hefty saving as per usual AND you’ll get a free gift of 3 Freyja resistance bands to help you get hench this summer.
