Join us, Wesley "Yeti Legs" and Marie "Basecamp" Black on the YETI WALKS INTO BASECAMP: Talking. Thru. Hiking. Podcast, where we discuss all things in the wonderful world of hiking. Each episode will cover various hiking topics, the 181 days we spent on the PCT, interviews with fellow hikers/trail angels, or even chats with gear junkies. We are a married couple who love hiking and ultra running. In 2022, we sold everything to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with a continuous footpath, followed by completing the TMB. Since then, we've hiked even more long trails. Welcome!

In This Episode: Quitting tends to have a negative connotation to it. But sometimes, quitting is good, and even necessary. In today’s episode, we sit down with Nic "Darwin" Rakestraw and discuss learning your body’s limits and reading the tea leaves for when to quit. We get into some of the nitty gritty about his attempted bike race on the Tour Divide Trail from Banff to Mexico, including his injuries (saddle rash and an Achilles issue) that ultimately led to his pulling out of the race. Our conversation also covers post-trail depression and advice to folks who have to make that decision to quit on trail. A big thanks to Darwin for joining us on today’s episode! In This Episode: Tramily, today is dedicated to some pretty ripe hikertrash...his name is Wesley "Megaman" Tils. He's been on the show a few times before talking about his "Walk For The Wild" trek, but today we are talking TRAIL UPDATES; that's because he's now 1300 miles into his journey, and still going strong, despite a few setbacks. We recorded this chat while he was on trail, in the thick of it (technically in a hotel room, but still). Having hiked from Main (ME) to New York (NY) at the time of our recording, the chat threads through his experiences in each state, folks who seem interested at first but then glaze over when he details his hiking saga for conservation, balancing emotions (especially anger) when concerning the dismantling of our natural spaces including Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase, a battle with mosquitoes that left his lips swollen, and some really uplifting interviews/chats he's had with folks along his walk for conservation (chestnut trees and petroglyphs, oh my). Today is part 1 of our 2 part check in with Megaman. In This Episode: Hikertrash, welcome! This week’s Yeti Legs & Basecamp covers the last half of our conversation with Jon “Pa’at” Anderson ( Pa’at and Wonder ). We continue to hike through the PCT with Pa’at...including his trail work for the Lionshead closure of the PCT that earned him a $300 fine and having his hiking permit pulled. His PCT song (which you can hear at the end of the episode) went viral and led to an Outdoor Magazine interview even though it focused on snow-blindness rather than his deep love for the land and respect for the Koya Tribes. We wrap up with what it means to be/walk outside alongside his PCT song. Special cohost for today’s episode is Christopher “Tumbleweed” Maples ( Christopher Maples ). In This Episode: Hikertrash, stand up! This week on Yeti Legs & Basecamp we are talking to Jon “Pa’at” Anderson ( Pa’at and Wonder ), our modern-day version of John Muir, but this guy is all about respecting the Indigenous Peoples that once lived along our trails and protected places. Pa’at’s childhood kept him out in the wilderness, exploring all that grows and weathers. That experience translated into who he has been throughout adulthood; his time spent as a ranger, his hike along the PCT (including meeting Tumbleweed, Basecamp, and me), and so much more. In this part 1, we wrap with a conversation about what it means to hike on native lands and respecting those who came before. In This Episode: Howdy ho, trail family! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Emily Schultz to talk about all things fire! Wildfires can certainly be bad, but they also have a lot of benefits for the natural world. In today’s episode, Emily and I dig into the nitty gritty about the science and ecology behind wildfires, and how life can still evolve and find a way after a fire. In This Episode: Howdy hikertrashy folks! In this week's episode we wrap up our interview with Nic “Darwin” Rakestraw. Darwin touches on the business structure for Evolved Supply Co. (his outdoor gear baby) and his inspiration for creating a small cottage name...and here's a hint, it sure as hell is not for the money. Remember how last episode we dove into imposter syndrome; well, you're not an imposter if you're doing the best you can, even as a business owner, even though none of us really have a clue what we are doing on this giant planet of ours. Being called an elitist because you like the most expensive hiking gear? Some might call you a smart consumer instead. The chat wraps talking about...bikes? Darwin has had quite the journey through cycling, bike racing, and bike-packing. He recently raced the Tour Divide - a 2,700 mile tour/race from Banff to New Mexico, and this interview covers his thoughts and plans before he started. Stay tuned for a follow up interview with him after the race to see how it went. In This Episode: Howdy, hikertrash! Thru-hiking is a selfish activity, no way around it. But, admitting that and still embracing trail community really dispels the illusion and lets you make the most of the experience. Today’s podcast episode is part 1 of 2 from an interview with legendary hiker, Nic “Darwin” Rakestraw. The conversation focuses on his hiking resume and how his relationship with thru-hiking has evolved (pun intended) over the years. He’s built a “career” (as he would put it, in air quotes) as a filmmaker on YouTube and combined his love for storytelling with hiking and outdoor adventure. Our conversation wraps with a heavy discussion on elitism and imposter syndrome in the hiking world, and how to navigate through it. Listen wherever you get your podcasts, and be sure to check out Darwin’s hiking gear shop, Evolved Supply Co . to prep for your next outdoor adventure while supporting small cottage brands looking to set you up for lightweight success. In This Episode- This is the beginning of a three-part series of our hike of the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB)! This first episode covers how we were feeling at the end of our Pacific Crest Trail hike, including Wesley having Covid, the battle between wanting to keep hiking and wanting to rest, and a LOT of gluttony in Mexico. We traveled to Mexico to hike...or not? But then...TMB. We continue our conversation about conservation, the American Prairie Project, we talk about grazing lands, ranches, and livestock, including the issue of the on-going cycle of disease transmission between wild and domestic sheep, and we talk about the fundamental desire of hikers to immerse ourselves into nature and why it’s important for hikers to care. Thanks again, Erik, for taking the time to chat, share your stories, and enlighten us on conservation efforts! In This Episode- Fighting for conservation policies that you believe in (or don't believe in) is a part of your right/duty as hikers in the U.S. and abroad. I'm talking about our wild spaces, those beautiful and rugged places that we seek out for joy, solace, or even food to feed our families. This is the first part of our chat with Erik Molvar (Executive Director) of the Western Watersheds Project (WWP). We cover a lot of ground including an introduction to who Erik is, all that he has accomplished in the 10,000 miles that he’s hiked (including the books he’s written about his hikes), and his work with the WWP. We also delve into the challenges we are facing in the fight to protect our public lands, the crossroads of traditional ecological knowledge, dominionism, and kin-centrism, and wrap on the topic of wolf conservation. Thanks, Erik, for taking the time to discuss how we are standing up for what we/you believe in, and protecting our wild spaces. In This Episode: They say it takes a village, but what’s a village without the folks who live there? Being a villager means showing up for your neighbors, contributing where you can, and protecting your home (in this case, the village). Erin Sprague, CEO of Protect Our Winters (or POW) thinks this way when it comes to POW’s main goal - combating climate change. As temperatures rise (and they are, without a doubt), our winters are taking a hit; something that may affect your next hike, including water availability, wildfires, or even increased avalanche risk. In today’s chat, Erin shares an empowering message on renewable energy by explaining what we can do (as a village) to fight the real culprit behind climate change. Is it AI? Extracting materials for renewable energy? Burning fossil fuels? Tune in to find out more, and to learn how being a good “villager” starts with simply knowing your neighbor’s name. In This Episode - Alaska may be one of the few [truly] wild places left in the United States, and while there aren’t any massive thru-hikes there (yet), the place is chock-full of wildlife, rugged terrain, hiking trails, and the highest mountains in the United States. Located in and near the Arctic Circle, it’s meant to be cold- so what’s happening up there that might be changing some of that raw, cold ruggedness? Tune in to our chat with Alex Lee, Director of Science and Education at Protect Our Winters (POW) where we cover drunken trees, permafrost, caribou, polar bears, oil extraction, the roadless rule, the Forest Service shifts, grizzlies, and even the most rugged critter (in my opinion) out there, a wolverine. This weeks’ episode was a chat with Nate Katz, owner of Aardwolf Gear, where we learned about his origins in the outdoor world, how he started his business, and all of the great things Aardwolf Gear is doing and stands for. But where'd he get that name? Aardwolf gear utilizes dyneema fabric to create ultralight, durable gear, including ditty bags, shovel sheaths, spoon covers, and more.
