Nine years ago, fresh off his first season as coach of the Lions, Chris Fagan joined us for the very first episode of the Roar Deal Podcast in the Gabba’s level 5 studios. After nine years, three premierships, and the greatest football ride of our lives, he will join us one more time - this time around, though, we’ll have 1500 friends there with us. It’s ticket week for our Chris Fagan celebration at QPAC - it’s also cinema week with Danny Daly! All the best films have high stakes, loveable heroes, and a moment near the end where all hope seems lost, before the good guys pull off a miracle and win the day. So it’s only natural that the 2026 AFL grand final would find its way to the big screen, with the club’s GM of footy joining us to reflect on a game people will still be talking about in a hundred years. It’s one month since the premiership was won, and the celebrations continue on the Roar Deal this week as we review Chris Fagan's first two seasons in charge - 2017 & 2018!
When Kiddy Coleman went down with a knee injury at half time of 2024’s Opening Round match against Carlton, there was a widely held sentiment from Lions fans that our premiership hopes had vanished too. Everything that’s happened since then is a bit astonishing: Dayne Zorko’s renaissance, Kiddy’s ongoing injury struggles, and the threepeat we’re still struggling to get our heads around. And now, the man who once seemed central to our hopes has left the club. Welcome to the Roar Deal, with the trade period behind us for another year and one of footy’s great sliding doors questions now to live on forever: what might have happened if Kiddy’s knee had never given way? This week, alongside a wrap of the Trade Period: -Event updates on both our QPAC & cinema Grand Final rewatch -The latest on the search to replace Chris Fagan -The AFLW team getting another win at last -The second half of our premiership players breakdown And much more!
As the search for Chris Fagan’s replacement officially begins, his extraordinary legacy at the Lions starts to crystalise. And when there is a mountain of gold just behind you, it’s so hard to turn around and look ahead - and so, we’re not going to do that just yet. Instead, we’ve booked a QPAC theatre for one more night of basking. This week on the show: -All the information about our big farewell for Fages -A trade period update -How close are we getting to knowing the new coach? And much more!
And now, the aftermath arrives. So much joy meets so much sadness, as we’re still digesting the greatest Grand Final win in living memory alongside the bombshell that it was Chris Fagan’s final act as Brisbane Lions coach. With October upon us and the trade period in full swing, we’re all a bit all over the shop right now. Some of us are still in the euphoria of Wharfie Time - others, however, have had the sadness of the Fagan departure take centre stage. And for others still, they’re trying to turn their attention to the next chapter in the story of this extraordinary football club. It’s an emotional buffet for Lions fans at the moment, and everything is on the menu. This week: -Who will be the next coach of the Lions? -Why the individual moments of Grand Final greatness are getting overlooked -The future of Kiddy Coleman And much more! We are here thanks to Kartable - planning for later or needing now? Streamlined pricing and procurement for all of your trade materials, supporting services & site deliveries. Go Lions!
We sit down for an emergency podcast reacting to the news that the Chris Fagan era has come to its end.
With four minutes and eighteen seconds left, as Wharfie Time rang around the MCG, the script seemed written: The threepeat had proven to be just a bridge too far. Fremantle Premiership merch was already on sale, the Auskickers had their Dockers guernseys on ready for the medal presentation, and Freo fans everywhere were hugging and crying as the enormity of the moment they had waited so long for started to hit them. And of course all this was happening. Because it was over. We just don’t see comebacks in Grand Finals - certainly not like that, certainly not that late. In the one hundred and thirty years of the competition’s history, it’s never happened before. This Lions group, though, don’t seem all that bothered by history - at least, not unless they’re the ones making it. And in four minutes of glory at the MCG, our Lions did exactly that. Under the highest possible stress, with stakes that do not come any greater and a clock rapidly ticking down, the 2026 premiership was won. Charlie Cameron started it, Zac Bailey continued it, Logan Morris finished it off, and Will Ashcroft tied it all together, officially launching this group into footy folklore for the rest of time. 2024 made these Lions a great side, 2025 made them brilliant, but the hat trick cements things - this Lions group is unquestionably now one of the greatest teams to ever play the game. This is the rare air of a dynasty. Enjoy our 2026 Premiership special thanks to Kartable!
For the fourth consecutive year, we gather at Fitzroy's iconic Royal Derby pub to preview the Grand Final clash against Fremantle. This year's special guests are Michael Voss and Oscar McInerney!
These are the days you live for as a footy fan. 3 points down with less than a minute left in a prelim, in front of more than 95, 000 people in the MCG - it’s the stuff of fan fiction, of kids playing in the backyard and making up the most epic scenarios they can imagine. And what better man to step up to the plate than Hugh McCluggage. The first one drafted under Chris Fagan, the first top pick who stayed, the quietly spoken boy who’s become a man at the club, the one who’s career has gone from strength to strength… Until this year, where the curveballs have hit, the form has dropped, and things have been tough most of the way through. All of that is ancient history now, though, with two late Hugh goals sending the Lions into their fourth straight Grand Final, equalling the extraordinary run of Leigh Matthew’s Lions and providing the most remarkable opportunity: the threepeat is only one more win away. This week on the podcast: -The blow-by-blow account of a prelim we’ll never forget -Who could come in for Lachie Neale? -Our Grand Final week plans We are here thanks to Kartable - Planning for later or needing now? Streamlined pricing and procurement for all of your trade materials, supporting services & site deliveries. Go Lions!
Another Tuesday, another bombshell!
Never doubt the Brisbane bounce back! Yet again, a shocking defeat has been followed by a stunning victory, as the Lions rediscover their ‘on’ mode once more to end Adelaide’s season. More importantly, Saturday night’s win has remarkably put us through to our fifth straight prelim, making it six of the last seven years that Brisbane have made it at least as far as the final four. It’s a remarkable achievement, but it won’t be enough for this Lions group, with the legacy-defining shot at a threepeat now only two wins away. Saturday twilight prelims at the MCG have been a happy hunting ground over the last two seasons. The two clubs who have played the most prelim finals there since 2000 are Geelong and Collingwood. We’ve already taken care of them, and now we get a crack at the third side on the list, as we prepare to play what is remarkably our first ever final against the Hawks since the merger. This week on the show: -Our perspectives on the 5-goal blitz -Chris Fagan’s an emotional management genius -How do we tame the Wizard again? The emergency podcast we've waited all year for is here!
Our Lions certainly don’t like doing things the easy way! We also apparently don’t like travelling to New South Wales, with Saturday’s Qualifying Final loss at the SCG making it three losses in the Harbour City this year, coming in at an average losing margin of 58 points. The good news is that we don’t have to go back to Sydney this year. The bad news is that it’s sudden death from this point onwards. The even worse news is that we might get knocked out by the worst club in the comp - the stain on the AFL that is the Adelaide Crows. This week on the podcast: -Has a path opened for Linc’s premiership fairytale to come true? -Ty Gallop vs Darcy Gardiner - Take #2 -Dom officially makes his 2026 Premiership bet And much more! Here we go again. After a long, barren nine-year finals drought from 2010 to 2018, we now remarkably enter our eighth consecutive finals series. And as September begins, the most extraordinary possibility sits ahead of us. Our Lions stand on the precipice of one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of Australian sport: Two hat trick dynasties two decades apart. As we enter the month where legends are made and history is written, we've got a massive episode of the podcast. This week: -The club's GM of Football Danny Daly joins us -Will Ashcroft's All Australian snub -The perfect Premiership merch idea (courtesy of Aaron) And much more! On the 30th of May, the Lions lost their sixth game for the season against Fremantle at the Gabba, sinking to a 6 and 6 record with wildcard finals looking our best hope. It led to all of us just about ruling out a top four finish, realising that we could probably only afford to lose one more game for the entire season for that to be possible. Who would’ve known that that would be exactly what we’d do. 10 wins and 1 loss later, and the Lions have finished the home & away season in the top four for the sixth time in Chris Fagan’s era. And now, as a hint of spring returns to the air, we know the bit that comes next very well. September is nearly here, and finals anxiety is about to go off the charts once again. Three more wins from here, and the Brisbane Lions, once more, will have gone back to back to back. This week on the podcast: -The Lions have 6 players in the All Australian Squad -Who’s more likely to get a Grand Final fairytale - Kiddy or Linc? -Our thoughts on the wildcard matchups The Roar Deal is sponsored by Kartable. 198 home & away games, 15 Lions wins, two or three emotional crashes on the Roar Deal, and after all of it, we find ourselves in a familiar situation: It’s all coming down to the final round. After another late season QClash fizzer, we return to the MCG as we near the end of August. Hopefully we’ll be doing the same at the end of September, with this Friday night’s game against Collingwood set to play an enormous role in determining what our finals run might look like. Remarkably, with one game to go, both a 3rd place finish and a qualifying final at the SCG and a 7th place knockout final at the Gabba are still on the table. Welcome to the Roar Deal, with the ladder predictor due to get a big workout in the week ahead with so many possibilities still on the table. The whiplash is back! Worryingly bad to unbelievably good is a pattern we’ve seen from the Lions a few times in recent years, and Friday night’s domination of the Hawks has given us another dose. A loss would’ve spelt the end of our Top 4 hopes, and a strong Hawthorn win might’ve felt close to the end of our premiership aspirations. It didn’t take long, though, for our nerves to turn to sheer delight, as the Lions put on an absolute masterclass to remind the rest of the competition just what we’re capable of. In what was probably our best game of the season, the Lions ended up with an unexpected percentage booster against the third-place Hawks. The pressure was awesome, the skill level was amazing, and our premiership hopes are well & truly alive. This week on the show: -We celebrate Chris Fagan’s historic milestone -How will the Lions AFLW side go without Taylor & Bree? -Dom’s 5 most hated sides And much more! The late season shocker strikes again. In both of the last two seasons, just as we seemed on track for a strong finals tilt, the Lions dished up a couple of late July and early August defeats that had us all worried. In 2024 it was losses to the Giants and Collingwood that took away our top 4 hopes. Last year, it was a Swans resurgence and a Suns smashing that dented our confidence. This year, we were hoping the late season curveballs might be behind us, only to find ourselves on the receiving end of maybe the worst one yet. Chris Fagan has been warning about the sledgehammer for a few weeks now, and here it is. An almost incomprehensible 76-point loss to Carlton has torched our percentage, derailed our winning streak, temporarily seen us fall out of the top 4, and raised significant questions about what lies ahead from here. This week on the show: -Is Dom ready to make 2026's wild bet yet? -We talk through the selection dilemma in front of the Lions now -Our favourite Jarrod Berry memories And much more! June began with the Lions sitting precariously in 9th spot following three consecutive losses. Fast forward a couple of months, and July ends with us entrenched in the top 4 by both a win and percentage, with our seventh win in a row coming on a perfect Brisbane winter’s day at the Gabba. Port Adelaide have been lauded for their defensive profile all year, and it was there in full force once again on Sunday. That is, at least, for the first three quarters, before a Lions masterclass blew things open. It’s capped off an incredible streak of the Lions at their best, with these last 7 wins coming at an average winning margin of 7 goals. And now, with August arriving, we’re hoping the next two months might be just as good as the last two. This week on the podcast: -Why have we still heard no word on the Bailey front? -Hugh’s back to his best -Our assessment of the Ty Gallop incident And much more! The current era of Brisbane Lions success began with a shock win over reigning premiers West Coast in Round 1, 2019. What none of us would have guessed that night, was that we would make it until at least 2027 without losing to them again. Our eighth win in a row over the Eagles has kept our top four hopes alive, with the four-hour flight home no doubt feeling much nicer with the four points in hand. A Crows upset over the Swans has them breathing down our necks though, leaving no margin for error as Josh Carr’s new-look Port Adelaide side make their way to the Gabba. You wouldn’t think that playing 16th one week and 15th the next would be quite so anxiety inducing, but that’s seemingly the way of things in 2026. Also this week: -What went wrong in the ruck? -Brainstorming ways to get Oscar Allen back into the side -Our thoughts on Ken Hinkley’s Tasmania appointment The Roar Deal is sponsored by Kartable. We needed percentage, and percentage is what we got. Sunday twilight against the side in last spot was hardly ever going to give us a blockbuster, but it proved to be everything the Lions needed, gaining just enough percentage to sneak back over the top of the Crows after their demolition of the Gold Coast. With Hugh & Zork back at last, the lineup is looking more and more like a side that could take us all the way back to the promised land. Not that we can think that far ahead, though, with a couple of banana peel games on the horizon. Both West Coast and Port Adelaide have caused a couple of upsets this season, and will no doubt be lining up to put a dent in our hat trick aspirations in the coming fortnight. Also this week: -Dom’s renewed hope that Zac might be staying -Who does Starce go to this Saturday night? -How does Oscar Allen fit back into the side? And much more!
