Russell Brand respected a woman’s right to say “no” according to his barrister, Ian Winter, who addressed the jury today for over three hours. He said Russell Brand had been “staggeringly honest” when he gave evidence in court. He was open about what he remembered and what he didn’t and he had never hidden his promiscuity. Mr Winter said the jury may think Russell Brand was distasteful, immoral or disgusting - but that did not make what he did illegal. He said the Dispatches TV documentary aired in 2023 which made allegations about Russell Brand “poisoned the well of justice” and “invited” women who had not made complaints at the time, to reconsider. And he said the delay in reporting the allegations was a “corruptor of justice” which relied on who had the best recollection. Today the jury have been told by the prosecution that this case focuses on two very different stories. The story of six women, who came forward to report what Russell Brand did to them many years ago. Women whose allegations were consistent and who had nothing to gain from making up their accounts or misremembering what happened to them. And the story of Russell Brand, a man who treated women with disdain, who felt he had a “birthright to an orgasm”, a man who viewed consent as an “obstacle to overcome or ignore.” Those words came from prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC in her closing speech to the jury. The closing speech from Ian Winter, on behalf of Russell Brand, will start on Monday. Russell Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, today took the stand to give evidence in his defence. She said she first struck up a relationship with the comedian after meeting him at one of his gigs when she was 19 in 2006. But she said their relationship didn't last more than a few months because he was promiscuous and cheated on her. Eight years later they rekindled their affair and got married. She said he was an 'amazing attentive husband' and 'wonderful' father to their three young children, and she loved him very much. Two other ex-girlfriends also gave statements to the court, telling the jury that Russell Brand was charismatic, gentle and charming when they dated in the 1990s but that they too ended their affairs because of his unfaithfulness and dependence on them for money. Russell Brand has taken the stand and spent five hours in the witness box denying that he raped, sexually assaulted and attempted to indecently assault six women over a decade. He admitted he used his fame to beg, flirt and seduce countless women and said he'd dedicated much of his life to 'reckless philandering and idiocy.' But he insisted he only had sexual encounters with women who wanted IT and claimed consent was more important than the sex itself because he wanted to feel 'loved and adored.' The jury today heard the words of Russell Brand for the first time. They were told that he was interviewed by police four times over two years and each time insisted he’d never had non-consensual sex with anyone. He admitted he’d led a promiscuous life and had sex with countless women in a variety of locations, including toilet cubicles. But he insisted the women had ‘invented and reimagined’ their consensual encounters after watching a ‘defamatory and fictitious’ documentary or reading ‘false’ allegations in a national newspaper. The woman who was Russell Brand's PA at the height of his fame has said his sexual appetite was "insane." Helen Berger was giving evidence at his trial for several counts of sex offences. She said she often encountered Russell Brand having sex with different women - in his dressing room, in the bedroom of his flat in Camden, in the shower and in public toilets. She said even when he was working on a deadline he would ask for a break to "go and have sex." She said his behaviour was normalised by those around him and she quit after eight months. She said she never witnessed anything illegal but he treated women poorly. Day 10: The prosecution case is now nearing the end and several friends and relatives of the woman who alleges Russell Brand anally raped her are being called to give evidence or their statements read to the jury. One said she was crying, looked grey and ashen as she recounted what had happened at the comedian’s home. The friend said: ‘She looked ill, she said it really f***ing hurt.’ A nurse who later examined her also said she remembered the alleged victim saying she did not consent, while her father told her that she had been raped. Day 9: We've now heard from all six of the women in the case. Today Caroline and Liz have the words of the final three of them. One alleges Russell Brand attacked her in a frenzy, kissing and groping her without warning in front of several members of his entourage, before laughing when she told him to 'f*** off.' Another claims he 'hurt and harmed her' during an alleged rape after she met him backstage at a stand-up gig. She says he refused to stop when she cried out in pain. The final woman also alleges sexual assault. She complained to her bosses at Channel 4 when he demanded a massage during a Christmas project they were working on. Day 8: The final alleged victim of Russell Brand said she felt degraded “like a piece of meat” after he anally raped her. She said for years she blamed herself for willingly going to his house for sex. But she did not consent to what he did. She became an alcoholic and struggled to live with the guilt and shame. But she said part of her recovery was accepting what happened was not her fault. Russell Brand denies the charges. It’s Day 7 of The Trial: Russell Brand and we’ve now heard from four of the six women at the case. They all accuse Russell Brand of some kind of sexual offences. Today we’ve got the words of a woman who says she was leapt on by Russell Brand when she was working for a radio station in the early 2000s when he was staring in the Big Brother spin off show. She said he leapt on her in a tiny room, kissed her and groped her, pinning her against a wall - and she said his entourage of three men and a woman did nothing to stop him. Another woman said Russell Brand orally raped her after dragging her into a toilet in a bar and another said Russell Brand put his head into groin during a filming project. Caroline and Liz have their words today. It's Day 6 of Russell Brand's trial and we've now heard from three alleged victims. One of the women told the jury today that within 30 seconds of meeting him in a bar in 2004, Russell Brand grabbed her breasts, and then dragged her into the toilet where he orally raped her. The woman said she was in shock and in a daze after the alleged attack but afterwards Russell Brand simply suggested they swap numbers. We've also now heard from another woman who said that in 2001 Russell Brand also tried to drag her into the toilets after they met at MTV where she was working. She said he was forceful and he had a "wild look in his eye." She said he was trying to assault her but she managed to get away. Subscribe now. What really happened at the Labour Party Conference in 1999? A woman who says she was the victim of a sex attack there, claims he went from being charming and chatty to monstrous in a matter of hours. "He wanted sex" she said "and I was there." She told her story to the jury sitting on his trial, and when she was challenged by Russell Brand's barrister that she had consented to sex, but regretted her decision later, she said: "I did not consent to rape." Caroline and Liz have her words, plus the evidence of Russell Brand's friend who said he used to line his fans up against a wall - choose one and take her for sex in a toilet. Ten minutes later he'd come back, choose another one and "repeat." One of the women who claims she was raped by Russell Brand in 1999 today spoke about what she says happened to her. She said he attacked her in a hotel room after she met him at the Labour Party Conference in Bournemouth. She told the jury at Southwark Crown Court that he pulled her onto a bed, pressed himself on top of her, ripped her clothes down and raped her. She said she felt dirty, shocked and stupid, and for over 20 years she blocked it from her mind until she came forward to report it to the police in 2023. Caroline and Liz were in court as the evidence unfolded. "Ruthless, calculating, manipulative, a sexual predator." Those are the words used today to describe Russell Brand. As the prosecution opened their case in London, Russell Brand was accused of not caring what state he left his victims in, in his quest to satify his "insatiable desire" to get what he wanted. He's accused of raping and sexually assaulting women over a decade. It's alleged none of them consented to his attacks and some of them begged him to stop. Caroline and Liz were in court as details of the allegations started to emerge. Some of the content today may be upsetting. It's Day 2 of Russell Brand's trial and the 12 people who will decide his fate have been selected. Russell Brand looked on from the dock as the jury of 8 men and 4 women all swore to try his case according to the evidence. They were told by the judge not to disucss the case outside of the jury, to carry out their own research, or to be swayed by the views of others. And they were warned to ignore media coverage of the case. Caroline and Liz were there to see it unfold. In this special video episode Caroline and Liz are back to discuss Lucy Letby - focusing on the facts and context of the case. Joining them in the studio is Press Association Reporter, Kim Pilling, who covered every day of the trial and believes more balance is needed in the ongoing conversations. They discuss how cherry-picking certain elements of the case, while omitting key information, has created a false narrative about what the jury actually heard over the 10-month trial and ultimately why they found Lucy Letby guilty of killing and harming babies. In October 2021, David Parfett tragically found his son, Tom, dead in a hotel room in Surrey. Tom was just 22 years old. David was determined to find the truth behind his son’s death. He followed Tom’s digital footprint and made a shocking discovery. A man called Kenneth Law had set up an online company to exploit vulnerable people suffering from mental illness. He helped them take their own lives by sending them poison through the post. David soon discovered that Tom wasn’t the only person to have received the lethal substance. Law had sent more than 1,200 packages to 40 countries around the world. With the help of a journalist, David tracked down Law and confronted him about his crimes. Law was then arrested in Canada and formally admitted to causing the deaths of 73 victims from England and Wales. However, following a plea deal, Law pleaded guilty to 14 counts of aiding and abetting suicide in Canada. In this episode, we hear from some of the victims’ families at the Supreme Court of Ontario, where a hearing took place last week. More than 50 relatives of Canadian and British victims gave incredibly moving statements to the judge. Caroline and Liz speak to David about tracking down Law and the impact his horrific actions had on his family. Can new government measures really improve the experience of rape victims in the criminal justice system? With thousands of rape and sexual assault cases waiting to reach court, ministers are promising dedicated courtrooms, fixed trial dates and more support for victims. In this episode, Liz speaks to senior barrister Mary Prior KC about whether the proposals can make a meaningful difference. Mary explains why delays are so damaging for both victims and those accused, the practical problems facing courts across England and Wales, and why she believes much more investment is needed to fix a system struggling under years of pressure.
