After returning from nearly a month in Costa Rica leading a women's somatic healing retreat, I'm sharing two powerful lessons that deepened my own healing journey after betrayal and divorce. In this episode, I explore why our sense of belonging is often shaken by betrayal trauma, emotional abuse, and divorce—and how reclaiming your worth begins by remembering that you already belong. I also share why slowing down isn't falling behind but is one of the most important practices for nervous system regulation, self-trust, and lasting emotional healing. If you're navigating betrayal trauma, high-conflict divorce, grief, or trying to rebuild your life after abuse, this episode offers encouragement, practical reflection questions, and hope that healing doesn't come from rushing—it comes from becoming. In this episode you'll learn: • Why betrayal often disrupts your sense of belonging • How trauma impacts your nervous system and self-worth • Why "slow is fast" when it comes to healing • Practical ways to build self-trust and create healthy boundaries • The deeper meaning of Pura Vida and how it can transform your healing journey _____________________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey Free Video Series "Am I In An Abusive Relationship" : You will receive an email containing videos that guide you through the 8 domains of a relationship and explore potentially destructive dynamics you may be experiencing. Each video includes a worksheet to help you reflect on your lived experience and gain greater clarity and understanding of your reality. Some days you don't need a framework. You need someone to sit with you and say: yes, that's real. That's what this episode is. If you've ever looked at your life a year, two years, five years out from your divorce and thought, I can't believe this is still happening — this one is for you. Not to fix it. Not to reframe it. Just to name it, out loud, so you don't feel so alone in it. Because there is a kind of pain in this journey that doesn't get talked about enough: the pain of things that just don't end. In this episode, I'm naming what keeps going: The impact on your children — the loyalty binds, the watching and waiting, the grief of witnessing what they carry The destructive behavior from the other parent that doesn't stop just because the papers are signed The gaslighting, the false narrative, the smear campaign you can't fight without looking unstable The legal and financial exhaustion — the filings, the motions, the documentation warfare The judgments from people who have no idea what runs underneath all of this The nervous system that's still scanning, still bracing, still waiting for the next drop The grief that resurfaces at the moments you least expect it This episode doesn't end with a five-step plan. It ends with something I hope you can actually feel: you are not doing it wrong. You are doing something genuinely hard. You didn't choose this. But you can still choose yourself. _________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey Free Video Series "Am I In An Abusive Relationship" : You will receive an email containing videos that guide you through the 8 domains of a relationship and explore potentially destructive dynamics you may be experiencing. Each video includes a worksheet to help you reflect on your lived experience and gain greater clarity and understanding of your reality. If you've experienced betrayal trauma, abuse, or divorce, you already know how deeply it lives in the body, not just the mind. In this episode, I sit down with Susan, founder of Soul Connections and an experienced foot zoning practitioner and holistic wellness educator, to talk about how the body holds and releases trauma, and how something as simple as your feet can become a doorway back to yourself. Susan has spent years helping women reconnect with their bodies through foot zoning, an ancient practice rooted in the idea that meridians running through the feet connect to every organ, muscle, and system in the body. We talk about what foot zoning actually is, how trauma drains the body's energy reserves, why the adrenals take such a hit during prolonged unsafe relationships, and how women can start rebuilding self-trust one small, tangible step at a time. This conversation is a reminder that healing is holistic. The mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual are never separate, and sometimes the smallest physical practice, like pressing a point between your toes, is enough to remind your nervous system that it's safe to come home. If you've ever known something was wrong but couldn't quite let yourself fully see it — this episode is for you. Today I'm sharing a video I created called Stages of Denial: Denial, Awareness, and the Courage to See Things as They Really Are. And I'm airing it here because this conversation matters not just when you're still in the relationship trying to figure out what's real, but after you leave too. Even years into healing, denial can still be present — denial about the severity of what you experienced, about the impact it had on you, and sometimes even about your own healing timeline. This one meets you wherever you are right now. What we cover: Why denial is not a character flaw — it's a rational adaptation to an environment designed to make your reality hard to see The central dialectic of trauma (Judith Herman) and why the internal war of knowing and not knowing makes complete sense The four degrees of denial and which one most survivors are actually living in The dimmer switch analogy — why the room gets dark so slowly that you convince yourself you can still see just fine How abusers use denial differently than survivors, and what Lundy Bancroft and Evan Stark say about that The quieter forms of denial: omission, compliance, intellectualizing, hopelessness A predictable pattern researchers found in recorded calls between abusers and survivors — and why knowing the pattern is the beginning of not being moved by it Where to actually start: the body, the journal, the emotions you've been holding under water ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey Free Video Series "Am I In An Abusive Relationship" : You will receive an email containing videos that guide you through the 8 domains of a relationship and explore potentially destructive dynamics you may be experiencing. Each video includes a worksheet to help you reflect on your lived experience and gain greater clarity and understanding of your reality. Healing from an abusive relationship doesn't end when you leave. In this episode, betrayal trauma coach and somatic practitioner Amie Woolsey gets honest about what it actually looks like to heal from abusive and controlling relationship patterns after divorce — and why your nervous system may still be living inside the old relationship long after the papers are signed. Whether you are navigating post-separation abuse, still in the middle of a high-conflict divorce, or years out and wondering why certain patterns keep showing up, this episode was made for you. _______________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey Free Video Series "Am I In An Abusive Relationship" : You will receive an email containing videos that guide you through the 8 domains of a relationship and explore potentially destructive dynamics you may be experiencing. Each video includes a worksheet to help you reflect on your lived experience and gain greater clarity and understanding of your reality. This episode welcomes guest Brian Wolff, a singer-songwriter based here in Austin Texas who I discovered in the most Austin way possible: playing live at the farmers market on a Saturday morning. One particular song stopped me in my tracks, and I knew I had to have him on. We talk through two of his songs together, line by line, and explore how they connect to the work of healing from betrayal trauma and divorce, even though that's not where they originally came from. What we cover: How Brian uses songwriting as his own form of therapy and processing Why "judging only by what they can see" hits so hard for anyone who's divorced someone who still wears the nice guy mask in public The exhausting, very real frustration of post-separation abuse and people who don't understand what's happening underneath the surface A second song about loving someone who's stuck and wanting so badly to help them let go, including the radical acceptance of having to let go of trying to make someone else let go The "cracked mirror" image and how the people we love can plant ideas in our heads about who we are The shift from "I want you to heal" to "we want you to heal," and what that says about community and being seen Hope, even in the hard stuff. That's the thread running through everything Brian writes, and it's the thread I hope runs through this whole season. _______________________ https://www.brianwolffmusic.com/about @brianwolffmusic Spotify: Brian Wolff https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tW2IMfCtMzMHLij0PlQht?si=Zx3kEw4BT4uMcSvwKmNksQ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey Free Video Series "Am I In An Abusive Relationship" : You will receive an email containing videos that guide you through the 8 domains of a relationship and explore potentially destructive dynamics you may be experiencing. Each video includes a worksheet to help you reflect on your lived experience and gain greater clarity and understanding of your reality. What does it cost you to stay? What does it cost you to leave? And what happens when you have been stuck in that question so long you have stopped trusting yourself entirely? In this Summer Song Series episode, Amie is joined by her friend and former client Elizabeth Garnett to talk about a song Elizabeth wrote from the deepest part of her own healing journey. Stay or Go captures what so many women in the middle of this decision cannot find words for: the soul-level exhaustion of staying, the terrifying unknown of leaving, and the price you pay for not choosing at all. This is a conversation about creative healing, the weight of the stuck place, what it really costs to stay comfortable in your discomfort, and why sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is ask yourself: at what cost? There is a moment in healing that does not get talked about enough — the moment you realize you are not just grieving the relationship. You are grieving yourself. The version of you that existed before the lies, before the walking on eggshells, before you started shrinking to make room for someone who was never going to show up the way you needed. This week's Summer Song Series episode is built around I Miss Me Too by Kyndal — a song that puts language to one of the most painful and least-named parts of betrayal recovery: identity erosion. In this episode, I breaks down the lyrics line by line and connects them to the real healing work of coming back to yourself after chronic deception, betrayal trauma, and a life-saving divorce. If you have ever driven in your car and thought — I miss who I was before all of this — this episode is for you. This is a re-airing of Part 2 of the Victim → Chooser series, where I continue the framework for understanding the emotional and cognitive stages of healing after betrayal, abuse, and relational trauma. In Part 1, I walked through the Victim and Emerger stages . In this episode, I move into the deeper reclamation process and what it actually looks like to step into agency through the Reclaimer and Chooser stages . This episode is not about perfection or “getting it right.” It’s about awareness, normalization, and learning how to recognize when your nervous system is shifting out of survival and into choice. In this episode, I explore: The shift from surviving to reclaiming after betrayal trauma How trust begins to rebuild (self, body, intuition, and reality) What it means to reclaim your voice, truth, and decision-making ability Why “I can make choices and be wrong” is a turning point in healing Reconnecting to your body after dissociation and trauma Boundaries as protection, not control Separating your identity from trauma, emotions, and the body What agency actually looks like in real life (not just theory) The Reclaimer stage is where people begin to return to themselves—trusting their body, rebuilding intuition, and realizing they are not powerless or “crazy,” but often were living inside a distorted reality created through betrayal or abuse. The Chooser stage is where agency becomes embodied. Not because life is easy, but because you begin to trust yourself enough to stay with yourself through anything. Choices are guided by values, not fear. And your identity is no longer defined by trauma, other people, or past experiences. If you’re in a season where things feel unclear or you’re questioning your direction, this episode is meant to help you locate yourself—not judge yourself. This episode is a re-airing of a previously recorded two-part series on shifting from a victim mindset into a chooser mindset after betrayal, abuse, and relational trauma. I’m bringing this one back because this framework has been coming up more with clients lately, especially those navigating divorce, post-separation abuse, and the early rebuilding stages of their life after betrayal. In this first part, I walk through the “Victim → Emerger” stages of healing and the thoughts that often show up in each space. This isn’t about labeling yourself or putting yourself in a box. It’s about building awareness so you can recognize where your mind tends to land under stress, overwhelm, or trauma activation. We explore how certain thoughts in the victim stage are actually protective in the beginning—but can become limiting when we stay there too long. Then we move into the emerger stage, where reality starts to come into focus, emotions begin to surface, and possibility starts to feel slightly more accessible. You’ll hear themes around: Betrayal trauma and loss of trust Why victim thoughts are often protective, not “wrong” Power, agency, and where it actually lives Numbing, shutdown, and emotional overwhelm The beginning shift into awareness and possibility (emerging stage) Anger and grief as part of forward movement What it looks like to start seeing patterns instead of collapse This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Next week I’ll re-air Part 2 where I move into Reclaimer and Chooser mindset stages and how we begin stepping into agency in a grounded, embodied way. If you’re in a season where things feel disorienting, heavy, or unclear—this framework is meant to help you orient, not judge where you are. And just a reminder: healing isn’t linear, and you don’t move through these stages perfectly. Most people move in and out of them as they stabilize and rebuild. After a life-saving divorce, many people expect that once they leave the relationship, they should feel better and move forward. But instead, they find themselves replaying memories, feeling on edge, or reacting to triggers that seem small but feel overwhelming. In this episode, I talk about why feeling stuck in the past is not a sign that you’re doing something wrong—it’s often a sign that your nervous system has not fully processed the shock, betrayal, and chronic stress you lived through. I explore how trauma responses like hypervigilance, rumination, and emotional reactivity are actually protective responses from the body, and why healing requires more than just thinking differently. Somatic work—healing that includes the body—can help restore a sense of safety, reduce reactivity, and support real movement forward after divorce. You’ll also hear reassurance that healing does not require erasing the good memories or having every answer. It means learning to hold the full truth of your story while building stability, choice, and agency in your life again. ________________________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey 📍 Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to jon the interest list https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching. In Part 2 of this deeply personal and powerful conversation, my daughter, McKenna, continues sharing her perspective of growing up through divorce, betrayal, emotional pain, healing, and family repair. This episode moves beyond the fear many parents carry and into something deeper: what actually helped a child heal. Together, we explore the realities children often face silently during divorce and family trauma — navigating loyalty binds, emotional overwhelm, parentification, confusion, grief, and the pressure to carry emotions that were never theirs to hold. McKenna vulnerably shares what was helpful, what was harmful, and what she wishes parents understood while navigating separation and healing. This conversation covers: The emotional weight children can carry after divorce Parentification and emotional dumping on children Why children should not become the emotional support system for parents The difference between honesty and oversharing Helping children process difficult truths in emotionally healthy ways Therapy, healing resources, and emotional support systems for kids How children learn healthy vs unhealthy relationship patterns The impact of watching a parent do their own healing work Letting children form their own relationship with the other parent Fear, control, custody, and trusting children’s inner wisdom The importance of continuing to show up for your children, even imperfectly How children develop resilience through healing and support One of the most meaningful moments in this episode is the reminder that children are not looking for perfect parents. They are looking for safety, honesty, consistency, and parents willing to keep growing. McKenna also shares an incredibly important perspective for fathers who may feel discouraged, disconnected, or afraid they’ve damaged the relationship beyond repair: do not stop reaching out. Children still need to know they are loved. ________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey 📍 Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to join interest list https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching. What is it really like for children growing up in a home impacted by betrayal, emotional abuse, addiction, and divorce? In this deeply vulnerable episode, Alana Gordon and I sit down with a very special guest — My oldest daughter, McKenna — to hear firsthand what the experience was like from the child’s perspective. Together, we explore the emotional realities children often carry silently: sensing tension in the home, questioning their own intuition, navigating loyalty binds between parents, and learning how to process grief, fear, confusion, and attachment wounds during and after divorce. McKenna openly shares her journey through family transition, therapy, healing, and the powerful impact of emotional safety, honesty, and healthy support systems. This conversation brings hope to parents who fear: “Will my kids be okay?” “Did I damage them?” “Am I making the right decision?” “How do I support my children while healing myself?” We also discuss: The hidden impact children feel in emotionally unsafe homes Why children often sense more than parents realize How gaslighting can unintentionally happen within families The importance of validating a child’s emotional reality The role therapy played in healing the family system Emotional hypervigilance and parentified children How children process divorce differently at different ages The difference children feel when abuse leaves the home Why emotionally safe homes matter more than “perfect” homes One of the most powerful themes in this episode is the reminder that children do not need perfect parents. They need emotionally safe parents willing to grow, repair, and create space for truth and healing. McKenna’s story is a powerful reminder that healing is possible — not just for parents, but for children too. What happens when your children don’t understand — or even resist — your healing journey? In this deeply honest conversation, Alana Gordon and I explore the painful and complicated reality many parents face after divorce, betrayal, addiction, or relational trauma: trying to heal while navigating disconnection, anger, or distance from their children. We talk about the instinct to over explain, defend ourselves, or try to convince our kids to “see” our growth… and why that often comes from our own attachment wounds and fear of losing connection. This episode dives into: Why children may pull away from the parent who feels safest Attachment dynamics after divorce and betrayal The subconscious fear of “losing” your children How overexplaining can unintentionally block connection The importance of staying in your own control bubble Why validating your child’s experience matters Boundaries with children without abandoning connection Supporting children without emotionally collapsing yourself The difference between healthy boundaries and emotional cutoffs Allowing children space for their own process and agency Parenting adult children through grief, change, and transition How healing parents model emotional maturity for future generations We also talk about the reality that children — even adult children — are navigating their own grief, attachment wounds, and identity shifts during and after divorce. Their reactions are not always a reflection of your worth or your healing. If you are in the painful space of feeling misunderstood, rejected, or disconnected from your children while trying to rebuild your life, this episode is for you. You are not failing because this is hard. You are learning how to love without controlling, how to stay connected without abandoning yourself, and how to create safety from the inside out. ___________________________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey 📍 Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to be informed when next workshop is available! https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching. In this deeply validating and practical conversation, I sit down with internationally recognized divorce parenting expert Christina McGhee to talk about one of the hardest parts of healing after betrayal and divorce: parenting through high-conflict co-parenting dynamics while trying to protect and emotionally support your children. Together, we unpack the realities many women face after a life-saving divorce, especially when post-separation abuse, coercive control, emotional immaturity, narcissistic traits, or betrayal trauma are part of the family dynamic. This episode explores: how to support children transitioning between two homes why kids often return dysregulated after parenting exchanges the importance of emotional regulation and “transition rituals” why the quality of the marriage does not determine the quality of the parent-child relationship helping children build resilience and emotional intelligence how betrayed partners can shift from fixing and rescuing into grounded support what to do when kids resist going to the other parent’s house how to avoid unintentionally putting children in the middle Christina shares compassionate, grounded tools for helping children feel emotionally safe while also helping parents understand the long game of healing and connection. This conversation is especially important for women navigating: betrayal trauma emotional abuse narcissistic or high-conflict co-parenting post-separation abuse coercive control parenting after a life-saving divorce Christina McGhee is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, coach, and author of the critically acclaimed book Parenting Apart. She is the founder of DivorceAndChildren.com and works with parents around the world to help children thrive despite divorce and family transitions. She believes divorce does not have to equal devastation for children and that parents can become their children’s greatest resource during family change. https://divorceandchildren.com/about/media/ ________________________ ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey 📍 Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to register https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching. We talk about what kids are really experiencing beneath the surface, how they interpret the changes happening around them, and why their healing deserves attention right alongside your own. You’ll hear insights about creating emotional safety, staying connected during transitions, and helping your children make sense of their story in healthy ways. Dating From Within June 11th-13th https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page After betrayal, abuse, and divorce, I see so many women become hyperfocused on learning every red flag, analyzing behaviors, and trying to figure out who is safe and who is not. But healing and healthy dating are not built from hypervigilance alone. In this bonus episode, I talk about why the real shift in dating after betrayal happens from the inside out. I explore how betrayal trauma disconnects women from their own body, intuition, needs, and discernment—and why reconnecting to yourself is the foundation of future healthy relationships. I break down the difference between externally scanning for danger versus internally learning to trust yourself again. In this episode, I discuss: Why many women don’t actually miss red flags—they override them How nervous system survival patterns impact dating after betrayal The difference between hypervigilance and discernment Why self-trust and body connection matter more than perfect detection skills How emotional manipulation and gaslighting train women to disconnect from themselves What it means to “date yourself” before dating someone else How to stop abandoning your needs in order to preserve connection Why becoming the chooser changes everything in future relationships I also share practical ways to begin rebuilding self-trust, reconnecting to your body, and creating a dating experience rooted in awareness, acceptance, and agency rather than fear and survival. This episode is also an invitation to the upcoming Dating From Within Workshop happening June 11–13, created specifically for women healing from betrayal trauma, abuse, and divorce who want to approach dating and relationships differently moving forward. ______________ Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to register https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching. Divorce is not a one-time conversation with your children. It is an ongoing relationship conversation that unfolds over months, years, and different stages of development. Whether you are preparing to talk to your children about separation, recently divorced, or years down the road and still navigating hard questions, this episode offers guidance for staying steady in those moments. Many parents carry enormous pressure to say the right thing, avoid causing harm, or protect their children from pain. But what children need most is not perfection—it is presence, honesty, and emotional safety. In this episode, I walk through what actually helps children adjust to divorce and how to respond when new questions arise long after the initial transition. We talk about how to stay grounded when emotions run high, how to answer difficult questions about the other parent, and how to support your child’s nervous system through ongoing change. You will also hear reassurance that repair matters. Even if conversations didn’t happen in the “ideal” way at the beginning, trust can still be rebuilt over time. This conversation is for any parent who wants to show up as the steady, safe place for their child—no matter where they are in the divorce journey. This episode is especially helpful if you: Are preparing to tell your children about divorce Recently separated or divorced Have been divorced for years and your child is asking new questions Are navigating co-parenting challenges Feel pressure to “get the conversation right” Worry about how divorce is affecting your children Want to be the steady, safe parent in the middle of uncertainty ✨ WORK WITH AMIE + NEXT STEPS IN YOUR HEALING https://amiewoolsey.com/amie-woolsey 📍 Dating From Within Workshop- June 11th-13th 👉 Cli ck here to register https://datingfromwithin.amiewoolsey.com/dating-from-within-page 💬 Empowered Divorce Q&A – Free monthly group coaching.
