Paul Lind from Idaho, is an interesting guy. His family has been heavily involved with the Western States Endurance Run since it became a foot race. His dad, Dr. Bob Lind was the medical director for many years and since 1978 started every race with a family 20 gauge shotgun until the year he passed. Paul took over those duties after that. Paul has run the race a couple times. Once at 18 years old, and then 20 years later and still earning a silver buckle. Paul was a nuclear scientist in his work life, he's a race director, and has a coaching company with son, Cody, who has a couple top 10 States finishes himself. That's how I came across him. He coaches my friend, former guest, and multiple time top 10 finisher, Emily Hawgood. Paul is a great storyteller and has plenty. I had the chance to chat with Jenny Lee Allen about 2 months ago. It was right after the Lake to Ocean 100k. She recorded another local podcast around the same time, so I sat on this one a while to let it run its course. Jenny Lee won the L2O women's race this year. If you haven't heard of this iconic Florida ultra, you ain't livin. It is a microcosm of many Florida ecosystems and wildlife. It is beautiful, remote, and scary. It starts at Lake Okechobee and goes to Hobe Sound Beach on the Lake to Ocean trail. Jenny is an enthusiastic, passionate, and humble athlete and I think you'll enjoy. @jennyleeallen (2167) Outrunning Doubt - YouTube Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance.
I met Natalie on Statesmas Eve. She was getting her feet pre-taped by me and my buddy Gregg Lawson. She was just overflowing with excitement and enthusiasm for the sport and her opportunity to compete in a bucket list race, The Western States 100 mile Endurance Run. We saw her on the track afterwards and she crushed it. Here her story, her experience at the race, and about her huge 10 person crew. Ultra running community at it's finest! Enjoy @wser Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance.
Ashley Leisher from Jacksonville, Florida is fairly new to the ultra running scene, but is already making noise with big wins at Badwater Cape Fear 51 Miler and The iconic Keys 100. She has won her way into Badwater 135 for 2027 and got drawn for Cocodona, so watch out! She is an incredibly passionate and humble athlete and a fun conversation. Enjoy! @ashleyleisher Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance.
Ary Rochon is a huge part of the Florida Ultrarunning Community, a FUR. He is coming off a big win at the Lake to Ocean 100K that takes place in late May from Lake Okeechobee to Hobe Sound Beach along the Lake to Ocean Trail. This is one of the most iconic races in Florida because of the variation of habitats, the challenging terrain which sometimes consists of significant amounts of water, and of course south Florida heat and humidity in early June. But it doesn't end there. Ary's ultrasignup is chock full of awesome accomplishments and pretty impressive volume for someone so new to the sport. He is an excellent steward of the trails and the sport, a great storyteller and a fun, interesting guy. Enjoy our chat, and a quick preview of Western States by me in the beginning. @aryan.rochon Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance. code = MARTYG Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Home | Wandering Runner
Stephanie Rosebaugh is a friend from Arizona. Her ultrarunning story takes a little different trajectory than most. Coming off her 2nd Cocodona 250 finish a few weeks ago, she joins me to help me remember that I am enough, share lots of running stories about 200's and BYU's. We also talk about her book, coming out very soon, The Power of Enough. If you can suffer through my therapy in the first 5-10 minutes, I think you'll enjoy this one. @stephsrunspiration Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance. code = MARTYG Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Home | Wandering Runner
On this episode, I sit down with ultrarunning legend Ann Trason for a conversation spanning the roots of the sport to where it stands today. Ann shares what it was like growing up before Title IX, competing alongside the boys in school, discovering ultrarunning through her first ultra, and the resilience it took to overcome DNF's in her first two attempts at Western States before becoming one of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen, including 14 wins at States. We also dive into her historic career, the evolution of ultrarunning over the decades, and her perspective on the modern era of the sport. Enjoy! Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance. Cody Warren is an entrepreneur and ultrarunner from Ohio. I met him in person during Keys 100 in 2023. We had met through Harvey Lewis on social media before that. He is a humble and passionate fan of the sport, a family man, and just a real treat to get to know. He's getting ready to toe the line at Cocodona 250 in just 2 days and I am confident he will do well. He has put in the work. Can't wait to follow! The Watters family from Alabama are Bob and Heather (the parents), and Ana and Larkin (the future of Alabama ultras for years to come, no pressure...ha-ha). Bob has done pretty much all of the tough trail 100 milers in the southeast as well as a couple 200's, including Southern States inaugural year. Larkin just finished the SS200 this year with the help of the whole family and a few other friends. Ana is the 50k specialist of the family and pacer/PT. I had the opportunity to follow along on FB this year as Larkin faced the challenges of a multi-day race with the support of the family. I was enthralled by Heather's detailed commentary and the way the family and friends rallied to help Larkin keep moving despite about 100 miles of really painful and slow going. I hope you enjoy getting to know this awesome family. Mount to Coast | For runners who transcend distance. Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves Home | Wandering Runner
Dan Hilliard from South Florida just finished his first 100 miler recently at Hungryland 100 down near Lake Okechobee in South Florida. The RD is our good friend Mikey Bee and this is no easy first race. It's a beautiful area with no light pollution and other city disturbances. Also home to the largest gator I've ever seen. Dan is an interesting, humble guy, coached by Chris and Ivi with Runfluent, and of course a great steward of the sport and the trails. Martin Schneekloth from Alabama by way of Germany has literally run hundreds of ultramarathons including most of the really hard mountain races in the world. That's his jam. He has his own YouTube channel called Ultra Kraut Running with many of his race highlights and scenery. He has more stories than we can fit into 1 episode, but we tried. I had a really fun chat with Nicole Coccia! 35 year old mother of 7, less than 2 years into her ultra-running career and 4/5 on victories. Not a bad start. Nicole has wins at Keys 100, Daytona 100, Long Haul 100, and Tik Tok 12 hour. Her only other ultra was a 4th at Blood Rock 100 and there's a story. She comes from a sales background, so she's not shy and doesn't lack confidence. Great tools for the perfect podcast guest. Marie Torres affectionately known as Ruth Pearl just finished her first 100 miler at Long Haul, last weekend. She had a DNF last year at 75ish miles and while she did get sweet redemption, it was way more than that. Hear it from her. Enjoy and share. Cody Poskin is a 24 year old ultrarunner from St. Louis, Missouri. He has already amassed an impressive resume with his recent win at the Gobi Desert 400K, 8th at Cocodona, the win at Jackpot 100 miler, and more. My friend Deanna Doane spoke with me on the podcast a couple years ago (almost 3) when she was fairly new to the sport. It was episode 31. Deanna has covered some miles literally and figuratively since then. Haven't we all. Since then Deanna has accomplished a couple FKT's, won some races, made a bunch of friends and become a coach. Catch up on her adventures and see what's next. I don't have to tell you what the Western States Endurance Run means to the ultrarunning community. It is the super bowl, the Boston Marathon, World Cup, the World Series..... And if you've listened to me gushing about the race and the energy on this podcast over the years, you will know how I feel about it. Two amazing people, Carrie Meng, Assistant Race Director, finisher, and all around awesome human, and John Trent, journalist, 11-time finisher. author, and again, just an awesome, passionate human, have started a podcast. It is called "The Spirit of Western States". They will discuss history, rules, lottery, crewing best practices, all the things. The will serve as great information for runners and crews preparing for their trip to the mecca of ultrarunning, and also for volunteers and rabid fans like me who can't get enough. Enjoy getting to know these two ultrarunners and their new podcast! 1.
