We developed Osteopathy Unplugged out of our passion for Osteopathy and the recognition that our profession needs a more intimate conversation about who we are and what we do. We interweave the philosophy of Osteopathy with clinical relevance and reveal our inner vision into the real-world workings of how we practice and live Osteopathy as a way of being. We are creating a comprehensive "textbook" of Osteopathic Clinical Philosophy based upon the 21st century oral tradition of podcasting. The foundational episodes will be free of charge, wherever you get your podcasts. The complete collection will only be offered at: www.patreon.com/osteopathyunplugged

In this episode we both tell stories of our many close Osteopathic friendships and how we uniquely connect through the magic and mystery of trading treatments. We believe that the hidden vitality of our profession is maintained by the intimacy shared between Osteopathic friends who share and trade treatments with each other. Experiencing the unfolding of being treated with Osteopathic Manipulation can be a crucial part of learning. Choosing to prioritize treating our colleagues and being cared for by them supports something that is essentially foundational in human relationships and furthers our love and appreciation for the gift of Osteopathic treatment. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts. This episode addresses the blurred boundaries that can occur when a patient from inside your practice becomes, or could become a friend outside your practice. We want to make the distinction between treating an established friend and treating someone who started out as an established patient and then became a friend. The second situation is more complex and potentially more difficult to navigate. It requires the former-patient-now-friend to acknowledge when we’re functioning in which relationship. That’s not always in their awareness or their ability, so we want you to be considering how you would handle this situation. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts. All non-osteopathic complementary therapies must be well timed, so that the awareness of what is effective is evident. In an Osteopathic treatment context, it’s crucial when we introduce a non-Osteopathic element. This episode isn’t about the specifics of supplements. How have cultural and historical shifts over the 133-year lifetime of Osteopathy changed the clinical practice of our profession? We all recognize that the Osteopathic practice has evolved since 1892—but our patients have changed as well. Robert Fulford, DO once said, “Patients were a lot easier to treat before World War II.” We will explore how more recent cultural events and social upheavals have changed the patient population and therefore, have changed the way we practice clinical Osteopathy. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts. Osteopathy has the extraordinary power to address clinical situations in a novel way and create seemingly miraculous outcomes. As DOs, we think of these remarkable treatment responses as everyday occurrences. But patients often want and believe an Osteopathic Treatment to be miraculous. True healing has its own pace and tempo. Therapeutic responses are the prerogative of the patient—not the Osteopath. Listen and join us as we explore the complexities of healing in Osteopathy and The Myth of the Single Treatment Miracle. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts. Do we give the patient what they want or do we give the patient what they need? The answer to this question is in this episode. We explore the interpersonal value of always touching the body part involved in the patient’s chief concern. And because we are Osteopaths, we need to determine if this pain is cause or effect. Fundamentally, the connection that happens between two people when the area of suffering is touched, happens at a deep and profound level. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts. How we care for ourselves, or how we ignore our wellbeing, influences the way we care for others. How can we encourage and teach our patients to care for themselves if we don’t do that for ourselves? How do we model self-care to the young Osteopathic students that we teach? In this episode, we take a dive into exploring the possibilities of why and how as Osteopath we might want to seriously consider choosing to be cared for by one of our colleagues. ~~~ We’ve created several foundational episodes, which are free and are available anywhere you get your podcasts.
