Do your hips feel stiff after sitting? If standing up leaves you hunched over, unsteady, or struggling through your first few steps, these gentle hip arthritis exercises may help your body feel more prepared to move. In this episode, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist Dr. Alyssa Kuhn shares three simple movements for hip stiffness after sitting. You can perform the first two exercises while seated, making them helpful at home, at work, while traveling, or before getting out of a chair. You’ll learn how to: • Activate your glutes and hamstrings before standing • Gently engage the muscles along the sides of your hips • Use side-to-side weight shifts to prepare your hips for walking • Adjust each movement based on your comfort and ability • Recognize three common seated exercises that may irritate sensitive hips These exercises may be especially helpful if you experience hip osteoarthritis, groin stiffness, difficulty standing after sitting, discomfort during your first few steps, or stiffness after traveling. The goal is not to force your hips through pain. It is to use comfortable movement to help your muscles become active and make the transition from sitting to walking feel smoother. Your entire body is connected. The way each joint moves and how strong each is matters. One of the biggest mistakes I see people making as a physical therapist is only focusing on the painful joint. For example, when dealing with knee pain- most people only do localized exercises for the knee- ignoring the rest of the body. In order to be successful in pain relief, strength and mobility- you have to focus on the big picture. This episode discusses what you need to know and how to get started. Surprisingly enough, cycling may not be as effective as you think. But when you look at the reasoning, it begins to make sense... I recently came across a research article titled: " Stationary cycling exercise for knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis " that looked into if cycling is effective at reducing certain symptoms for those with knee osteoarthritis. It turns out, it can be helpful for pain but not so much for long term stiffness and mobility. In this episode I'll share the findings of the research as well as a strategy you can use to help fill in the gaps in terms of balance, range of motion and full body strength.
