Golf journalist Jimmy Emanuel joins me to unpack how LIV reached this point, why Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew its long-term backing, and what the proposed LIV Golf 2.0 could look like. We also discuss the millions reportedly owed to players, whether stars such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith could return to the PGA Tour, the future of LIV Adelaide, and whether LIV should ultimately be remembered as a failed golf league—or a disruptor that permanently changed professional golf. Please Complete The Listener Survey Here We hear a lot about burnout in golf — particularly with juniors and high-performance players. But is burnout always simply a result of doing too much? In this Wednesday Wisdom, I explore the relationship between burnout, passion, pressure and enjoyment. Why can one golfer practise and play for hours and still be desperate to get back out there the next day, while another feels completely drained by the same workload? Sometimes the difference might be how we view what we're doing. “I have to practise.” “I have to go to the gym.” “I have to play today.” What happens when we change that language to: “I get to practise.” “I get to train.” “I get to play golf.” We discuss why loving the process matters, the difference between choosing to work hard and feeling obligated to work hard, and why coaches and parents should look beyond simply how many hours a golfer is putting in. Because perhaps the question isn't just “Are you doing too much?” It might also be: “Do you still love what you're doing?” As mentioned in my podcasts, I do offer training programs to help you get better at your practice outside of your lessons with your coach! email me for more information info@yourgolfperformance.com Training Aids & Discount Codes Back 2 Basics Putting – Use the code YGP10 for 10% off or Click Here for 10% off Divot Board –Use the code YGP for 10% off or Click here for 10% off Strike Wedge – Click Here for 15% off Ryp Golf Speed Training – use the code YGP at check out for 10% off! Sign up for the free course/library of 22 drills to help you get better at golf here Matt Ballard's journey into golf coaching was anything but conventional. A former touring professional himself, Matt actually began coaching Tour players while he was still trying to make it as a player — including one week at the WA Open when he realised he'd booked six or seven putting lessons for other professionals before he'd even prepared for his own tournament. That moment helped set him on a completely different path. In this episode, Matt joins the Your Golf Performance Podcast to discuss his playing career, how he got into coaching "backwards", and the lessons he's learned working with some of the best players in the game. We talk about his early fascination with putting, what he learned from Greg Chalmers when he was one of the world's best putters, and how Matt eventually found himself coaching Adam Scott's short game. Matt shares some brilliant stories from his time with Adam — including initially having to turn down the opportunity to coach him, a difficult conversation at TPC Sawgrass, and a reconnaissance trip alongside Adam and legendary caddie Steve Williams that changed the way Matt viewed tournament preparation. We also dive into Matt's time as Singapore National Coach, what he implemented within their high-performance program to help Singapore become more internationally competitive, and the lessons he later took into his work with Golf Australia. Finally, we discuss how Matt's coaching has evolved from being heavily technical to focusing on three key areas: technique, skill development and pressure training — and why improving technique means very little if a golfer can't transfer it to the course. A fascinating conversation about playing, coaching, high performance and what actually helps golfers get better. Sign up for the free course/library of 22 drills to help you get better at golf here Is your back-nine collapse really caused by poor technique—or could it be what you’re eating and drinking during the round? In this Wednesday Wisdom episode, I share the story of a golfer in his 70s who regularly struggled on the back nine. He assumed his golf swing was letting him down, but after looking more closely at his routine, we discovered that his blood-glucose levels were almost doubling after his halfway food. Rather than giving him the sustained energy he expected, his food choices may have been contributing to fluctuating energy, concentration and decision-making on the closing holes.I discuss why golfers need to pay attention to: What they eat before and during a round Hydration and electrolyte intake Energy and concentration changes throughout the round Recognising when the problem may not be technical Seeking personalised advice when managing diabetes or other medical conditions If you’re looking for more ideas around golf nutrition, food and hydration, go back and listen to Episode 99 with performance dietitian Rob Yang. Tristan Lambert and I went to high school together, where I saw firsthand the talent, discipline and dedication that would eventually take him into professional golf. He represented NSW and Australia, enjoyed an outstanding amateur career and competed in the United States alongside future major champions Dustin Johnson and Webb Simpson. After turning professional, he finished runner-up in the Queensland Open, Victorian PGA and South Australian PGA—but the breakthrough victory never arrived. In this honest conversation, we look back on Tristan’s journey and discuss the highs and lows of chasing professional golf, the anxiety and nerves he experienced in competition, the pressure of expectations and the realities of life on tour. We also explore what happens when talent, preparation and hard work don’t lead to the career you imagined—and the lessons Tristan has taken from the journey. This month marks five years of the Your Golf Performance Podcast.Over those five years, I’ve had more than 200 conversations with professional golfers, coaches, mental performance experts and some of the smartest people in the game. So for this week’s Wednesday Wisdom, I’m reflecting on five of the biggest lessons I’ve taken from those conversations. Why there’s no single pathway to becoming a great golfer. Why the best performers understand themselves so well. Why failure is almost always part of the journey. Why the mental game isn’t simply about “staying positive”. And why curiosity might be one of the greatest tools we have for improvement. Five years. More than 200 conversations. Five lessons that have influenced the way I think about golf, performance and coaching. A huge thank you to everyone who has listened, shared an episode or been part of the podcast over the past five years — and to our partners Titleist, Draw More Circles and STYKZ Golf for their support. What does it take mentally to win The Open Championship? Mental performance coach Karl Morris returns to the Your Golf Performance Podcast following Ryan Fox’s incredible victory at The Open. Karl has worked closely with Ryan on the mental side of performance, and in this episode we go behind the scenes of his Open Championship win — from bouncing back after an opening-round 72, to handling pressure, dealing with bad breaks, committing to shots and performing when everything is on the line.We discuss: What changed mentally after Ryan’s opening 72 How Ryan and his caddie created greater ownership and commitment over every shot Why acceptance is one of golf’s most important skills How breathing can help golfers perform under pressure Why you don’t need to feel confident to play great golf The difference between chasing consistency and developing adaptability Why unrealistic expectations destroy performance What “mental toughness” actually looks like How to play when your A-game doesn’t show up Practical ways to train your mental game rather than simply reading about it Whether you’re a competitive golfer, junior, coach or someone simply trying to get more out of your game, this conversation provides a fascinating insight into the mindset behind a Major Championship victory — and how you can apply the same principles to your own golf. PGA Tour Stats That Will Change Your Expectations Do you expect to hole every 5-footer? Hit every wedge inside 10 feet? Get up and down every time you miss a green? You might be expecting way too much from your golf. In this episode of Wednesday Wisdom, I break down five PGA Tour stats that might surprise you — and show just how unrealistic our expectations can become. We look at putting percentages, proximity to the hole, scrambling and more to compare what golfers think great players should do versus what the best players in the world actually do. If you've ever walked off the course frustrated because you felt like you “should have played better,” this episode might completely change the way you judge your golf. Are You Practising… Or Just Hitting Balls? There’s a big difference between hitting balls and actually practising. In this Wednesday Wisdom, I talk about a post I saw showing someone with a shag bag, hitting chip after chip to the same hole — and why hitting 100 balls from the same spot might not be as productive as it feels.Repetition certainly has its place, particularly when you’re working on a technical change. But if you want your practice to transfer to the golf course, you need variability, different challenges and some form of pressure or consequence.Make your practice look more like the game you’re actually preparing to play. Ever hit a couple of bad shots and suddenly start trying to fix your golf swing mid-round? A new swing thought. A grip change. Slow it down. Stay down. Turn more. Before you know it, you’re five holes deep into a swing you’ve never made before. In this Wednesday Wisdom, I talk about why the golf course isn’t the place to rebuild your swing, how quickly searching for fixes can derail a round, and what you should focus on instead when things aren’t going your way. In this week's Wednesday Wisdom, I share a recent coaching experience that reinforced one of the biggest lessons in golf improvement: a great range swing doesn't automatically lead to great golf on the course. I had a student who consistently swung the club well during lessons, but the moment we stepped onto the golf course, everything changed. Different decisions, different emotions, different swing patterns. That's because golf isn't just about technique—it's about transferring skills from a controlled practice environment into a real-world performance environment where pressure, consequences, and decision-making all come into play.In this episode, I explain: Why range performance can be misleading. What changes when you take your game onto the course. How to bridge the gap between practice and performance. Why on-course coaching can fast-track your improvement. If you've ever wondered why you "can't take your range game to the course," this episode is for you. This is a great episode for golfers of every level because the real goal isn't building a perfect swing—it's building a swing that holds up when the score counts. In this episode, I sit down with one of Australia's leading golf coaches, Ryan Mouque, to dive into why so many golfers struggle to improve despite putting in plenty of time and effort. We discuss: Why most amateur golfers plateau. The biggest mistakes golfers make when trying to improve. Why online coaching can be one of the fastest ways to lower your scores. The importance of having a structured system instead of constantly searching for swing tips. How AimPoint has changed the way golfers read greens and why having a repeatable process leads to better putting under pressure. Whether you're trying to break 100, 90 or 80, this conversation is packed with practical advice that will help you practise smarter, make better decisions on the course, and understand what it really takes to improve.🎙️ Listen now and let us know your biggest takeaway. Sign up for the free course/library of 22 drills to help you get better at golf here One of the biggest lessons I took away this week didn't happen on a golf course... it happened during a personal training session. My trainer had me learning a new movement pattern, and the instruction was simple: slow everything down. Every repetition had to be deliberate, controlled, and intentional. It felt awkward at first, but that's exactly the point. When you're trying to build a new movement, speed often hides mistakes instead of fixing them. It's no different in golf. So many golfers want to hit balls at full speed while making a swing change, but if your brain hasn't had time to learn the new pattern, you'll simply fall back into old habits. Slowing down allows your body to understand what the movement should actually feel like before you gradually build speed back in.Whether you're in the gym, on the driving range, or learning any new skill, remember this:Slow is smooth. Smooth becomes fast.In this week's Wednesday Wisdom, I share why slowing down could be the fastest way to improve your golf.
