Drawing on her experience as both a successful osteopath and an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer, Kim explains how mindset influences the way practitioners lead, market their clinics, build relationships with patients, and make business decisions. The conversation explores practical NLP techniques that can help osteopaths move past self-doubt, improve communication, and create lasting personal and professional change. Whether you're looking to grow your clinic, become a more confident leader, or simply understand the power of mindset, this episode offers valuable insights into how changing the way you think can transform the way you work. In this solo episode, Gilly explores a common blind spot for clinic owners... and it’s not patient numbers. While many practitioners focus heavily on attracting more bookings, Gilly unpacks why this often isn’t the real barrier to growth. Instead, she looks at the underlying issues that can quietly limit sustainability, profitability, and ease in practice — even when the diary is full. This episode invites clinic owners to step back and reflect on what really drives a thriving business, and where small but important shifts can make a significant difference to long-term success. In this episode, Gilly speaks with osteopaths Melina Harrison and Jane Greenshields about one of the most important, and often avoided, topics in practice: money. Together, they explore why so many osteopaths feel uncomfortable when it comes to finances, and how that can impact everything from pricing and boundaries to long-term sustainability. Melina and Jane share practical insights into managing money with more clarity and confidence, helping practitioners move away from stress and uncertainty towards a more secure and intentional approach. This conversation is an invitation to rethink your relationship with money - not just as a business necessity, but as a key part of building a thriving, sustainable clinic and career. CORRECTION: Matthew mentioned that Nova Scotia was the first province to gain regulation in Canada. It was in fact New Brunswick. In this episode, Gilly speaks with Matthew Redford, Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), about the role of the regulator and the practical support available to osteopaths. Matthew clarifies common misconceptions about the GOsC, including its responsibilities under the Osteopaths Act, its role in fitness to practise processes, and the difference between regulation and professional promotion. The conversation explores how osteopaths are involved in governance and decision-making, and how the regulator works to protect the public while supporting practitioners. WhatsApp Osteopaths can now message us via WhatsApp. Message us on 020 7046 0406 during office hours (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday) and we'll do our best to help you with your enquiry. Drop-in's Osteopaths can join us every Tuesday from 12noon - 1pm on Zoom to meet and chat with some of our staff. Our 'Chat with GOsC' sessions are an informal space for osteopaths to meet us, ask any questions or discuss any concerns. So far, we've had interesting discussions with osteopaths about topics such as how to fill out the Peer Discussion Review planning section during your CPD cycle and speaking with patients about what they can expect when attending an osteopathy appointment. Osteopaths should check their most recent ebulletin for the link to join or log in to the o zone to find the Zoom link on the home page. Independent Support Service The Independent Support Service, delivered by Victim Support, has supported patients, witnesses and osteopaths involved in the fitness to practise process since 2019. Victim Support is a national charity offering a confidential, safe space to discuss feelings about the process and understand what to expect at each stage. Osteopaths involved in a fitness to practise case can self-refer by emailing medicalcouncils@victimsupport.org.uk or calling 0300 303 1964 . The helpline is open 24/7, 365 days a year, with caseworkers available Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm (excluding bank holidays). Alternatively, osteopaths can ask their GOsC contact to make a referral. Support is available throughout the fitness to practise process and for three months after the case concludes. More information, including a video extract from the May 2022 fitness to practise webinar, is available here. Joint-Statement with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) We have issued a joint statement with the ASA on protecting the osteopathic title here. This statement enables osteopaths to raise concerns directly with the ASA about advertising that may mislead the public regarding the status, qualifications or experience of those providing services (including osteopathic techniques). The ASA has the power to ban misleading or irresponsible advertising. Concerns about advertising used by unregulated individuals can be raised here. In this episode, Gilly continues her conversation with osteopath and professional supervisor Ruth Wharton, diving deeper into the value of supervision in supporting osteopaths’ wellbeing and professional growth. Ruth explains that supervision offers a confidential, reflective space for practitioners to explore emotional and professional challenges — distinct from mentoring, which focuses more on business or career progression. It’s a space to pause, process, and gain perspective. Together, Gilly and Ruth discuss how supervision can help osteopaths navigate burnout, boundary difficulties, and emotional overload; issues that can be especially acute for clinic principals managing teams. By creating a supportive framework for reflection, supervision helps practitioners strengthen boundaries, sustain empathy, and maintain balance amid the demands of clinical life. Ruth also explores how reflective practice can benefit even the most experienced osteopaths, preventing compassion fatigue and enhancing long-term fulfilment. The discussion touches on the intersection of neurodivergence and osteopathic practice, highlighting how traits like heightened empathy can be both an asset and a challenge — and how supervision provides a space to work through that complexity. 🕒 [01:20] – Ruth’s journey to becoming an osteopath 🕒 [11:22] – Who does supervision benefit? 🕒 [38:00] – Typical issues that are seen in supervision VALUABLE RESOURCES Are You Ready To Maximise Your Clinic's Potential And Achieve A Higher Annual Turnover? Ruth shares her journey from working in social work to becoming an osteopath, and how her experience led her to value reflective, supportive dialogue in clinical settings. They explore how supervision—distinct from therapy, coaching, or managerial oversight—offers a confidential space for osteopaths to process challenging cases, offload emotional weight, and grow both personally and professionally. Ruth explains that supervision can help practitioners avoid burnout, increase confidence, sharpen clinical and interpersonal skills, and maintain joy in their work. Importantly, supervision isn’t about being told what to do—it’s about being met where you are, asking high-quality questions, and working collaboratively with someone who holds space for you without judgement or agenda.
