Listen on Apple PodcastsIn this episode of The Search & Seizure Show, Anthony Bandiero sits down with Chris Butler — 34-year law enforcement veteran, use of force expert, and founder of Raptor Protection and Safety Services — for one of the most important conversations we've had on this podcast. Chris spent over 20 years in law enforcement training with the Calgary Police Service and has since become one of North America's most sought-after voices on officer safety, human performance, and use of force reform. His work takes him across North America and beyond, because as Chris puts it, human behavior doesn't know borders. Here's what they cover: Why traditional police training fails to transfer to the real world and what non-linear training actually looks like in practice The articulation gap that gets good officers criminally charged, and how trainers can help close it Cognitive vs. primal aggression, the dangerous blind spot most officers are never trained to recognize The illusion of learning and what the research really says about skill retention VR, AR, and the critical role of certified role players in modern training The body-worn camera debate and the science of memory confabulation Chris's three bold recommendations for law enforcement leaders serious about reform Whether you're a frontline officer, a trainer, or a law enforcement executive, this episode will challenge the way you think about officer safety and what it truly means to be prepared for the street.
Can you search a backpack after you've already handcuffed someone? What about a closet down the hall? Where does your authority to search actually end after an arrest? In this webinar, attorney and former law enforcement officer Anthony Bandiero breaks down the law on Search Incident to Arrest (SITA) — one of the most commonly used and most frequently misunderstood exceptions to the warrant requirement. Topics covered include: The Chimel rule and the three requirements for a lawful SITA The "immediate control" debate: does it matter at the time of arrest or the time of search? Protective sweeps — what you can search automatically, what requires reasonable suspicion, and what's off-limits Why Riley v. California means your phone search authority is essentially gone The truth about pretext searches and when courts will (and won't) uphold them How Arizona v. Gantt changed vehicle searches forever Whether you're on patrol, in investigations, or just trying to stay sharp on Fourth Amendment law, this is the case law knowledge you need to make good arrests and keep evidence admissible.
Drone as First Responder: Building a Program That's Legal, Constitutional, and Community-Ready Drones are changing the game in law enforcement — but launching a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program without the right legal and operational groundwork is a recipe for disaster. In this episode, we break down everything agencies need to know before their drones ever leave the ground. We cover the operational nuts and bolts — what resources, FAA waivers, and approvals you actually need — along with the legal landmines you need to avoid, including when drone use crosses the line into a Fourth Amendment "search," current case law on homes, curtilage, and public airspace, and how officers can clearly articulate the how, why, and when of real-world drone deployments. We also tackle the community side: how to talk to city councils, residents, and local media about privacy protections, intent, and safety measures so your program earns trust instead of headlines. Whether you're just exploring DFR or ready to scale, this one's for you. Presented by Blue to Gold Law Enforcement Training in partnership with Flock Safety.

Probable cause is the level of evidence that police officers need to justify their actions. It means that they have a reasonable basis to believe that a crime has been committed, is being committed, or is about to be committed, and that the person they are targeting is involved in some way. Probable cause is not a fixed or precise concept. It depends on the facts and circumstances of each situation. Courts have to decide on a case-by-case basis whether probable cause existed at the time of the police action. Some questions that this podcast will answer is: What seminal US Supreme Court cases define PC? How should police articulate PC in their reports? How can police establish PCs during criminal investigations?

Reasonable suspicion is a common standard used by police officers around the nation. When an officer stops someone courts require that the officer has either a search warrant, probable cause, or reasonable suspicion. Reasonable suspicion is less strict than probable cause but has very limited applications. It refers to a police officer’s reasonably justifiable suspicion that a person has recently committed a crime, is in the process of committing a crime, or is soon going to commit a crime. This webinar will take a deep dive into reasonable suspicion and answer the following questions: What happened in the seminal Terry v. Ohio case? What does reasonable suspicion really mean? What is the best way to articulate reasonable suspicion?
