The half marathon might be the best thing to happen to running in years. It's long enough to be a real challenge, short enough that you don't need to rearrange your entire life to train for it — and it's exploding in popularity. In this episode, we dig into why the 13.1 has become the distance of choice for so many runners, using the Great North Run as our jumping-off point. We cover: The Great North Run — what makes it one of the best half marathons in the world Why the Olympics still doesn't have a half marathon, and whether that needs to change The best half marathon shoes right now, and what actually makes a difference on race day The half marathon boom in America and how it compares to the UK scene The Shoreditch Half and the rise of stylish, city-based races What's driving so many runners to choose 13.1 over the full 26.2 Whether you're training for your first half or you're a serial racer chasing a new PB, this one's packed with race recommendations, gear talk, and a look at where the half marathon boom goes next. 🎧 Watch/listen to the full episode — and let us know in the comments, what's your favourite half marathon? Are running influencers dead? Are running clubs now the biggest influence in the sport? That's the question we open with in this episode of the FORDY RUNS Podcast — and it sets the tone for everything else we get into. Running is evolving at an incredible pace, but is it all for the better? We discuss the biggest changes happening in the running world today — from carbon-plated running shoes and AI-generated training plans to Hyrox, Zone 2 training, Garmin recovery scores and the explosion of run clubs — asking one simple question: what is actually making us better runners? We also debate whether people should be paying to run a 5K, whether the UK needs more athletics tracks, and dig deeper into whether run clubs are now shaping the sport more than individual running influencers. Then it's time for our biggest Underrated or Overrated segment yet, as we give our honest opinions on some of the hottest topics in running, including super shoes, maximal cushioning, stability shoes, marathon majors, Strava, Hyrox, ultra marathons, run streaks, walking trends, recovery technology, daily trainers, wearable tech and much more. Whether you're training for your first 5K, chasing a marathon PB, preparing for your next half marathon, or simply love keeping up with the latest running news and trends, this episode is packed with opinions, laughs and plenty of topics you'll want to debate. 💬 Join the conversation in the comments and let us know: Are running clubs the new influencers? Which running trend is the most overrated? Which one deserves more recognition? Would you ever pay to run a local 5K? Parkruns are packed. Marathon ballots are more oversubscribed than ever. Strava is full of PBs. So why does track and field feel like it's on life support? In this episode, we dig into the strange paradox at the heart of the sport: running has never been more popular, yet athletics participation keeps declining. We break down what the recent European Championships and Commonwealth Games revealed about the state of the sport — empty stands, shrinking grassroots numbers, and a growing gap between recreational running culture and competitive athletics. We ask the hard questions: Is this a funding crisis, or something deeper? Why isn't the running boom translating into club membership or track participation? Have the sport's governing bodies lost touch with what's actually pulling people toward running? What needs to change before athletics gets left behind entirely? If you love the sport but you're worried about where it's headed, this conversation is for you. 🎧 Listen/watch the full episode and let us know in the comments — what do you think is really killing athletics participation? Before every run needed a cinematic edit, viral hook, or affiliate link, there was a generation of runners simply sharing their journeys, race experiences, training failures, and love for the sport. They built communities long before "content creator" became a career. In this episode, we discuss where many of those original running influencers have gone. Did they burn out? Move on? Get pushed aside by changing algorithms? Or did the running content landscape simply evolve? We also talk about the rise of a new generation of creators—many in their 20s—filming every run, chasing views, and landing brand deals. While there's nothing wrong with that, has something been lost along the way? Are everyday runners looking for creators they can relate to, or has the focus shifted toward performance, aesthetics, and sponsorships? Join us for an honest conversation about authenticity, community, and whether there's still room for the older, more relatable voices that helped shape the online running world. What do you think? Where have the original running influencers gone? Has running content changed for better or worse? Who are your favourite running creators today? 👇 Let us know in the comments! #Running #RunningPodcast #RunningCommunity Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
