What Do You Want Your Home to Feel Like This Fall? Before you think about pumpkins, cozy throws, or fall decorating trends, I want to ask you one simple question: What do you want your home to feel like this fall? Not what you want it to look like. Not what color palette is trending. Not what Pinterest says your home should be. How do you want it to feel? In today's episode, we're slowing down long enough to answer that question together. Because the truth is, most decorating frustration doesn't come from choosing the wrong paint color or buying the wrong pillow—it comes from making decorating decisions without a clear vision for how we want our homes to support the life we're living. I'll walk you through one of the very first exercises I use with my private clients: identifying three feeling words that become the filter for every decorating decision you make. Once you know those three words, decorating becomes simpler, shopping becomes more intentional, and your home starts feeling like you. In this episode, we'll cover: Why most women start decorating in the wrong place. The powerful question I ask every client before we talk about furniture, paint, or style. A simple exercise to help you uncover the feeling you're actually trying to create at home. How three feeling words can become your decorating compass. Why this exercise is especially important before fall decorating season begins. How to avoid buying seasonal décor that looks beautiful but never feels quite right in your own home. Your Takeaway Before you buy a single piece of fall décor, take a few quiet minutes to identify your three feeling words. Some examples: Cozy Calm Warm Collected Layered Grounded Playful Romantic Serene Lived-in Effortless Curated Then ask yourself one simple question every time you're tempted to buy something: "Does this support the way I want my home to feel?" It might be the simplest decorating framework you'll ever use—and one that can completely change the way you decorate. Need help translating your feeling words into your home? Ever get that text — "Hey, we're in the neighborhood, mind if we stop by?" — and feel your stomach drop? You're not alone. Getting your home guest ready on a moment's notice feels overwhelming when you don't have a system. But here's the truth: a company-ready home isn't about having a perfect home. It's about having an intentional one. In this episode, I walk you through exactly how to reset your home in minutes — and how to set it up so that guest-ready is basically its natural resting state. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why "guest ready" doesn't mean perfect — and the mindset shift that takes the pressure off for good The 5 zones that actually matter when guests come over (and why you can let the rest go) The 20-minute reset: a go-to order of operations so you're never running around randomly The clutter basket trick that will change your life Why smell is your home's very first impression — and how to make it a good one The one lighting swap that makes every room feel warmer and more intentional instantly How to create "company corners" — 2-3 spots that are always styled so the rest of the room feels pulled together even when it isn't The four bathroom non-negotiables guests actually notice Why a $5 bunch of grocery store flowers does more than you'd think The 20-Minute Reset Order of Operations: Light a candle, set a diffuser or start a simmering pot Clear and wipe surfaces (don't forget the basket) Quick sweep (both with eyes and a broom/vacuum) Attention to seating areas (couch: fluff pillows, dining: wipe chairs) Fresh towel in the bathroom Turn off overhead lights and turn on lamps Mentioned in This Episode: Decorating SOS Call If this episode made you realize your home isn't quite where you want it to be and it's NOT about the cleaning, it's MORE than that — and you're ready for someone to look at your specific space and tell you exactly what it needs — a Decorating SOS Call is your next step. In one focused 60-minute session, we'll dig into your space, your goals, and your budget and walk away with a clear, strategic plan for making your home feel the way you've always wanted it to — without the overwhelm and without buying things that don't work. 👉 Book your Decorating SOS Call here Connect with Dani: Website: figandfarmathome.com Instagram: @figandfarmathome Join The Collective: figandfarmathome.com/thecollective

Five years ago, I sat down behind a microphone, pressed record, and hoped someone would listen. I never imagined that one day I'd be celebrating 400 episodes. And I certainly never expected the lessons that would emerge along the way. When I started this podcast, I thought I was teaching decorating. How to choose paint colors. How to style bookshelves. How to make a room feel finished. How to create a home you love without spending a fortune. But after 400 episodes and thousands of conversations with listeners just like you, I've realized something surprising: Decorating was never really about decorating. It's about confidence. It's about creating a home that reflects who you are. It's about learning to trust yourself. It's about making progress instead of waiting for perfection. And it's about discovering that the home you've always wanted is often much closer than you think. In this special 400th episode, I'm reflecting on the journey, sharing some of the biggest lessons I've learned over the past five years, and celebrating the incredible community that has grown around this show. Whether you've been listening since Episode 1 or you just found the podcast last week, I'm so grateful you're here. In This Episode: How this podcast started (and what I thought it would become) The surprising lesson I never expected to learn What 400 episodes have taught me about decorating and confidence A special invitation to join the 400th episode celebration Thank You To every listener who has downloaded an episode, left a review, shared the show with a friend, sent a message, joined The Collective, booked a call, or simply invited me into your earbuds while folding laundry, walking the dog, or tackling a project at home... Thank you. This milestone belongs to all of us. Join the Celebration: https://figandfarmathome.myflodesk.com/400 We're celebrating 400 episodes all week long with giveaways, surprises, bonus opportunities, and plenty of fun. 🌟🌟 ARE YOU CELEBRATING WITH US NEXT WEEK?!?!?!?! 🌟🌟 Join the 400th episode / 5 year celebration at: https://figandfarmathome.myflodesk.com/400 As we count down to Episode 400, I'm sharing one of the questions I get asked most often: "Where do you shop for affordable home decor?" The truth is, creating a beautiful home doesn't require a designer budget. It does require knowing where to shop, what to look for, and how to mix pieces from different sources to create a home that feels collected rather than cookie-cutter. In this episode, I'm counting down my five favorite places to shop for home decor on a budget and sharing exactly what I buy from each one. In this episode: #5: IKEA More than just furniture! I'm sharing my favorite IKEA staples, including pillow forms, curtains, frames, plants, candles, kitchen storage, and the white dinner plates that serve as the foundation for nearly all of my tablescapes. #4: Target One of my favorite sources for throw pillows, blankets, and bath towels. You'll hear my favorite shopping strategy: finding inspiration from higher-end retailers and then looking for similar styles at a more approachable price point. #3: HomeGoods The perfect place for unique finds that aren't showing up in every home. I'm always on the hunt for picture frames, artwork, candles, and those unexpected treasures that make a home feel personal. #2: Etsy When I want artwork, handmade decor, custom pillow covers, or beautiful curtains, Etsy is my go-to. Yes, handmade pieces often cost more, but they bring character, craftsmanship, and uniqueness that mass-produced decor simply can't replicate. #1: Thrifting My absolute favorite way to decorate on a budget. Thrifting is where curated homes are built—but only if you know what you're looking for. I'll share why understanding your aesthetic is the key to successful thrifting and how it can save you from frustration while helping you create a home that looks collected over time. // Links mentioned in show: // Become a Design Bestie by joining the newsletter: https://bit.ly/designbestie Email: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call: https://www.figandfarmathome.com/decorating-sos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group
New builds are supposed to feel exciting…so why do so many builder-grade homes feel a little cold, flat, or even generic once you move in? In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the most common frustrations I see: loving your home on paper, but struggling to make it feel personal, warm, and custom once you’re actually living in it. Because here’s the truth: It’s not that your home is “bad.” And it’s not that you need a full renovation. Most builder-grade homes are designed to be safe, neutral, and broadly appealing—which often means they come without the layers, contrast, and character that make a space feel truly finished. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why builder-grade homes often feel cold or generic (even when beautifully decorated) The biggest mistake people make when trying to “fix” a new build feel Why adding more decor usually doesn’t solve the problem Simple, high-impact ways to add character and personality without renovating How layering, contrast, and intentional choices create a custom feel over time This is one of those shifts that changes everything—not because you’re starting over, but because you finally understand how to see your home differently. And if you’ve ever looked around and thought, “I don’t hate my home…I just wish it felt more like me,” this episode will give you a completely new perspective. Ready to go beyond quick fixes? The Difference Between a Decorated Room and a Designer Room Ever wonder why a room can have all the "right" furniture and decor but still feel unfinished? More often than not, the answer comes down to styling. In today's episode, I'm sharing the exact process I use to style coffee tables, consoles, dressers, shelves, kitchen counters, nightstands, and other flat surfaces so they look intentional rather than cluttered. Because here's the thing: styling isn't about adding more stuff. It's about creating visual interest, balance, and cohesion so your home feels thoughtfully designed. You'll learn how to: Determine the purpose of a flat surface before styling it Edit and curate decor so your styling doesn't become clutter Choose an anchor piece that grounds the entire vignette Use layering to create depth and visual interest Incorporate texture for a more collected, designer look Vary heights to keep your styling from feeling flat Repeat design elements throughout the room for cohesion Add the finishing touch that works in every decorating style If you've ever struggled with coffee table styling, shelf styling, console table decor, or simply making your home feel more polished, this episode will give you a practical framework you can use in any room of your home. HINT: This episode is directly tied to our 5th year/400th episode celebration, so be sure to give it a try on any flat surface in your home. Want a home that looks expensive, but doesn't cost a lot to get it?! The secret is in recognizing how BUSY your home is. Maybe your shelves feel cluttered. Your surfaces feel full. Or your decor just doesn’t have that elevated, designer look you’re craving. In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the biggest reasons homes feel visually chaotic—and the simple styling shift that can instantly make your home look more sophisticated without buying a single new thing. Because here’s the truth: Luxury isn’t about having more. It’s about intentionality. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why too many small decor pieces create visual clutter The hidden reason expensive-looking homes often feel calmer and simpler The “breathing room” trick designers use to make rooms feel elevated How scale changes the entire feel of a room A simple editing exercise you can do in five minutes using what you already own This is one of those small shifts that creates a huge visual impact—helping your home feel calmer, more intentional, and more high-end without spending more money. After 5 years and 400 podcast episodes, there’s decorating advice I still stand by because it continues to help women create homes that feel cozy, cohesive, personal, and beautiful — without overspending or second-guessing every decision. In this episode of fig & farm (at home), we’re talking about timeless home decorating principles that still matter, even as trends change. If you’ve ever struggled with decorating confidence, decision overwhelm, choosing paint colors, creating a cohesive home, or making your home feel warm and inviting, this episode is for you. Inside this episode: Why decorating confidence is built through action, not overthinking How waiting for the “perfect plan” keeps women stuck Why matching furniture sets often make homes feel flat The importance of scale in home decorating Why expensive furniture doesn’t automatically create a cohesive home The problem with copying Pinterest rooms exactly How to decorate with what you already own Why decluttering and editing your home matters How layering texture creates a cozy home The importance of organic elements like wood, greenery, linen, leather, and woven textures Why paint color matters more than people realize The truth about creating a home that feels personal instead of perfect You’ll also hear real wins from women learning to trust themselves and build decorating confidence in their own homes. This episode is packed with practical decorating advice, encouragement, and timeless interior design tips to help you create a home you truly love — one step at a time. Your furniture might not be the problem. It might just be where it’s sitting. In today’s Five Minute Fix, we’re talking about one of the biggest layout mistakes I see in homes all the time: furniture that feels awkward, disconnected, or “off” in the room…even when the pieces themselves are beautiful. Because here’s what most people do: They push every piece against the walls hoping the room will feel bigger. But instead? The room often ends up feeling cold, disconnected, and surprisingly harder to use. In today’s episode, you’ll learn: Why floating furniture away from the walls can actually make a room feel larger and cozier The hidden reason your seating arrangement may feel uncomfortable or awkward What designers mean by “conversation zones” and why they matter A simple furniture shift you can try in five minutes that changes the entire feel of a room How rugs help anchor furniture and create connection between pieces Why rooms need “pathways” instead of just empty space One of the biggest mindset shifts in decorating is realizing: Open space alone does not create good flow. Connection does. When furniture is too spread out, every piece starts feeling isolated instead of intentional. But when pieces are pulled together thoughtfully, your room immediately starts feeling warmer, more conversational, and more inviting. And friend…this is one of those fixes that costs absolutely nothing to try. Ready to go beyond quick fixes? You know that feeling when your home is technically decorated… but it still doesn’t feel finished? Everything is in place. You’ve bought the furniture, hung some art, added a few pillows—but something still feels off. Not terrible. Just… incomplete. In this episode, I’m breaking down the 7 most common decorating mistakes that keep homes stuck in that “almost there” stage for years. And here’s the truth most people miss: it’s rarely about buying more things. It’s about a few key decisions that quietly affect how your entire home feels. Let’s get into it. 1. Decorating room-by-room instead of as a whole home When every room is designed in isolation, your home starts to feel disconnected. Even beautiful rooms won’t flow together if there’s no shared thread connecting them. 2. Hanging onto placeholder pieces too long That “we’ll replace it later” rug? The temporary lighting? The art you never really loved? These pieces quietly keep your home in limbo—and your eye registers that lack of intention. 3. Getting scale wrong (especially rugs, lighting, and art) Even well-designed rooms feel off when scale is wrong. Too-small rugs, undersized lighting, or timid art choices can make everything feel underwhelming. 4. Mixing styles without a bridge element You can mix styles beautifully—but without a unifying material, color, or shape language, the room starts to feel accidental instead of curated. 5. Playing it too safe with neutrals Safe doesn’t always mean successful. When everything is soft beige, gray, or white, rooms can lose depth, contrast, and personality. 6. Treating lighting as functional instead of foundational Lighting is often an afterthought, but it’s one of the most powerful design tools you have. Without layering and intention, even great rooms fall flat. 7. Not editing enough Most homes don’t struggle from a lack of decor—they struggle from too much. When every surface is filled, nothing gets to stand out. If your home feels “almost finished,” you don’t need a full redesign. You likely need clarity, editing, and a few intentional adjustments that shift how everything works together. Small changes can create a surprisingly big transformation. If this is the stage you’re in—where you can see what’s not working but aren’t sure what to do next—that’s exactly what I help with inside my coaching and programs. You don’t need more inspiration. Ever walk through your home and feel like each room tells a different story? Nothing is necessarily wrong… but it doesn’t quite feel pulled together either. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why decorating room-by-room often leads to a disconnected home The real reason your space feels “off” (even when you like everything in it) A simple, actionable way to create flow using what you already own This is one of those small changes that creates a big impact—helping your home feel calmer, more intentional, and finally like it all makes sense. AI is everywhere right now…including home decorating. From instant mood boards to room renderings and paint color suggestions, artificial intelligence is changing the way women approach decorating their homes. But is AI actually helping us create more beautiful homes…or is it making our spaces feel more generic? In this episode, we’re diving into the pros and cons of using AI in home design and talking honestly about what technology can do well—and what it completely misses. Because while AI can generate a gorgeous room in seconds, it doesn’t know your lifestyle, your budget, your pets, your memories, or the pieces you already own and love. Most importantly? It doesn’t know YOU. In this conversation, we explore: The biggest benefits of using AI for home decorating How AI can help you overcome design overwhelm Why AI is useful for paint colors, layouts, and visualizing possibilities The hidden downside of AI-generated homes Why trendy rooms often feel disconnected and impersonal How AI may be pulling women away from trusting their own design instincts The difference between a “Pinterest perfect” room and a home that feels personal and lived in Why your intuition still matters when decorating your home If you’ve ever wondered whether AI can truly replace a designer—or if it’s just another tool in your decorating toolbox—this episode is for you. Your home should reflect your story, not just the latest trends. ✨ Ready for personalized decorating help? Book a Decorating SOS Call and get expert guidance for your space without the overwhelm. In this episode, I’m sharing a coaching conversation with Stefanie—a woman who already knew what she loved in her home, but couldn’t quite figure out how to bring it to life. She was drawn to cottage-style and Polish granny chic interiors. She had the inspiration saved. She had the vision in her mind. She could even articulate the feeling she wanted her home to have. But her reality didn’t match it. She had been in her home for about a year, and instead of feeling settled and expressive, she felt stuck in neutral. Not wrong… just not her. And like so many women, she found herself collecting more and more inspiration—Pinterest boards, saved images, ideas for color, wallpaper, texture—but nothing was actually changing in her space. If you’ve ever felt like your home is full of ideas but nothing is actually happening, you’re not alone. What Stefanie was struggling with: She wasn’t sure where to start in her home Her space didn’t reflect her personality yet She kept collecting inspiration but couldn’t translate it into action She had ideas, but felt stuck in neutral She couldn’t see how to connect the dots across her rooms This is such a common place to be—especially when you already have good taste and a strong sense of what you like. The problem isn’t lack of ideas. It’s not knowing how to turn those ideas into a cohesive direction for your actual home. What shifted in the conversation: During our coaching call, we worked through how her style could actually show up in real life—not just in inspiration images. Instead of trying to “start from scratch,” we focused on: identifying patterns in what she was already drawn to clarifying how her style could show up consistently across rooms simplifying her decision-making so she wasn’t overwhelmed by options helping her see her home as a connected whole, not separate unfinished rooms The breakthrough wasn’t about adding more ideas—it was about finally making sense of the ones she already had. The bigger takeaway: So many of us don’t actually need more inspiration. We need clarity. Because inspiration without direction just turns into overwhelm. And overwhelm often turns into inaction—which is exactly what keeps homes feeling unfinished and disconnected. If you’ve been collecting ideas for your home but nothing is changing, this episode will help you see what might actually be missing. // Links mentioned in show: // Become a Design Bestie by joining the newsletter: https://bit.ly/designbestie Email: hello@figandfarmathome.com Website: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call: https://www.figandfarmathome.com/decorating-sos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group
