Listen on Apple PodcastsYou know how much we love a sporting doco. Can't get to them fast enough. And the Scott Miller swimming documentary was no exception. Except, it's taken Libby a couple of weeks to actually talk about it. Miller was a swimming poster boy of the 90s who fell from favour and the public eye after he was arrested and jailed for his involvement in drugs and trafficking. And it's more relatable to than Libby had anticipated. Deep End: The Scott Miller Story is available now on ABC iView PS Sporties - don't forget about the Active Industries First Start Traineeship Program ($20k to bring on a staff member for your club? The lead athletes in the Tour de France are being woken up in the middle of the night and Libby is unimpressed thank you very much. The FIFA World Cup is on and we have some confessions to make. Georgie's family went on an active holiday that was wonderful and slightly disasterous all at the same time. We experience the critique levelled at women who dare to discuss sport and unpack all our feelings about Rafael Nadal's documentary. Sharyn Donaghy works with elite athletes on a daily basis and will tell you that a lot of them are missing the foundational skill sets to thrive outside their sport. It's nothing to do with their physical skills or their times. Instead, it's everything to do with the structures, practices and belief in yourself outside of sport - mental health, sleep, career development, financial literacy and social connection. If you have a teen who plays sport, it's so important to listen to this conversation. You can follow Sharyn for more great advice on Instagram at Educate to Elevate . We highly recommend it! 83 percent of Australians are concerned about the influence of the manosphere on boys and young men. In 2008, Neil Davis lost his 17 year old son, Sam, to an unprovoked one-punch attack at a party in May 2008. Since then Neil and his wife, Nat Cook, have channelled their profound grief into a mission of prevention. They established the Sammy D Foundation in Adelaide and for over two decades have been working with schools, clubs, coaches, parents and young men. Neil joins us to talk about the role sport can play in helping boys navigate conflict, respect, masculinity, and peer pressure in healthier ways. And given the influence of the manosphere, this sort of conversation has never been more important. If you're anything like us, when you're watching your child playing a contact sport from the sidelines, concussion is something that you'll have in the back of your mind. To make sure you have all the information you need, this week we're talking to Dr David Hughes - AIS Chief Medical Officer and the Chair of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission. He takes us through it all - head injury vs concussion, the way concussion can happen (it's not just a head hitting something), symptoms, and the evidence around when to play and when to sit it out. We promise you'll learn something - we sure did! Do you have a child or teen playing sport in your household? Then this series is for you! We know that families are busy, that the school year is racing by, and it's hard to find time to source the experts. So we've brought together some of Australia's brightest minds to talk about the issues that impact sport loving families, and give you some easy tips to help everyone stay playing. Our first guest is Accredited Practising Dietitian, Advanced Sports Dietitian and founder of The Fuel School , Ali Miles . Ali works with every type of athlete - from the elite winter Olympians (like Scotty James) and Paralympians, to elite netball teams (hello Sunshine Coast Lightning) to teens who play lots of sports to kids just trying to eat a better lunchbox. This is not just a conversation for teens on performance pathways - if you have a teen or child who has a lunchbox or fights with you about breakfast (surely it's not just us?), you need to tune in. The Enhanced Games happened this week and do we/Libby have thoughts. Bottom line? It actually did sport a great service. Maybe we're saying thank you this whole circus? We'll get back to you on that. Do you know the story of how parkrun ended up in Australia? Or that dogs used to be registered to run? Or that Australia has made it our own? Neither did we until we caught up with parkrun Australian's founder, Tim Oberg . Tim was the person who brought largest free running activity to Australia and grew it to what it is today. And now he's ready to help kids find a love of moving their body through the RAD Run Club . On any given Saturday morning, around 6000 Australians volunteer to ensure parkrun runs smoothly and we would like to shout out this amazing community contribution this National Volunteers Week. The ABC and Deakin University recently released the findings of a survey of elite female athletes and the results say a lot about the work still to be done in women's sport. In some parts, there seems to be progress. In others, the results are grim. Regardless, we wanted to bring in the ABC's Deputy Editor Amanda Shalala to unpack the numbers for us and remind us why these sorts of surveys are so important in the women's sport landscape. Brisbane City Council is the 2nd biggest council in the southern hemisphere and part of the team pulling together one of the largest sporting events in the world, Brisbane 2032. And you know how much we're into the Olympics. Soooo, this week we asked Brisbane's Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner to drop into the studio and talk to us about how we involve kids in parks and what legacy we can expect from Brisbane 2032. Saturday sport can bring out the best in our kids… and the loudest in us. One minute they’re chasing the ball, the next they’re sitting in the grass making daisy chains. Kieren Perkins knows what it takes to win (Atlanta 96, 1500m, ICONIC), but he’s far more interested in whether Australians are still playing sport at all. As an Olympic champion and now CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, Kieren is urging us to be a nation of “doers” rather than just “watchers”. Boxing Day can mean different things to different people – shopping the sales or eating endless Christmas leftovers. For many, the Boxing Day test is central to the day: family crowded around the TV, arguing over runs, soaking up the game. For Rana Hussain , cricket gave that same sense of belonging. But in fact organised sport wasn’t really set-up for her. Whether it was the non-inclusive uniforms, the lack of knowledge of cultural expectations, or simply the lack of diversity in the food offered at sports clubs, Rana felt locked out of sport. Today, Rana’s changing that. As founder of Good Human , she’s helped sporting organisations like Cricket Australia and various football clubs build spaces that are inclusive, welcoming, and community focused. +++ Sportish is powered by the Australian Sports Commission , and produced by Deadset Studios . Before sport was graded, scored and analysed... what did you love to play? Not just do , but actually, play ? That feeling of joy, curiosity and being completely immersed in something is known as the 'play state'. Mindset coach Ben Crowe says most of us leave it behind far too early. As sport becomes organised, measured, and outcome-driven, we change from playing for love to playing for approval. Redefining success and reconnecting with play is central to Ben’s work with athletes including tennis stars Ash Barty and Andre Agassi and surfer Molly Picklum. It's helped them transform their relationships with sport as a result. Ben says play is as essential as sleep, so how do we bring more of it back, for ourselves and for our kids? +++ Sportish is powered by the Australian Sports Commission and produced by Deadset Studios . Swimmer Ellie Cole has spent most of her life adapting. Losing her leg aged three meant learning how to move differently, think differently, and push through moments most kids never face. That early resilience didn’t just make her a Paralympian - it shaped how she sees sport and who gets to take part in it. Ellie’s clear about one thing: inclusive sporting spaces aren’t just for athletes with disabilities. When kids grow up training beside people with different bodies and different life experiences, they learn how to work with others, how to communicate, and how to build real community. When more people can participate, everyone benefits. So if inclusion makes sport stronger, why not design every club that way? +++ Sportish podcast is powered by the Australian Sports Commission and produced by Deadset Studios .
