Jack Nicklaus, winner of 18 professional major championships and two U.S. Amateur titles, joins us for a look back at his experience in the majors. In this episode we explore his U.S. Open record. Listen in as Jack recounts his U.S. Amateur victories and competing in his first major at the 1957 U.S. Open at Inverness playing as a 17-year-old amateur. He takes us through his near-miss at Cherry Hills in 1960 where he played his final two round with Ben Hogan. Jack broke Hogan's scoring record prevailing at the 1967 event at Baltusrol. Two second-place finishes to Trevino in 1968 and 1971 preceded his second win at Pebble Beach in 1972, famed for his spectacular 1-iron shot on the 17th. He shares memories of his final win in 1980, again at Baltusrol, and again setting a new scoring record. You will enjoy his retelling of Tom Watson's famous chip-in to sneak past Jack in 1982 at Pebble Beach and his disappointment with how he finished his final U.S. Open in 2000. World Golf Hall of Fame member Nancy Lopez begins her story growing up and learning the game under the watchful eye of her father in Roswell, New Mexico. She had astounding success as a junior player winning her state's amateur title as a 12, 13 and 14-year-old. Nancy played on the boy's team in high school after successfully challenging an arcane rule that stood in her way. She won the U.S. Girls Junior, the Women's Western Junior 3 times and, competed in the Women's U.S. Open twice (with a T2 as Low Am in 1975) all before starting college. She was an All-American at Tulsa, the Women's collegiate champion, a Curtis Cup Team member (meeting the Queen) and won the Women's Western Amateur before deciding to turn professional after two years of college. The all-time leader in U.S. Tour wins with 88 LPGA victories, Kathy Whitworth takes us down the home stretch of her career from the 1970's forward beginning with her win in the 1971 LPGA Championship at Pleasant Valley CC. Her sixth and final major win came at the 1975 LPGA Championship at Pine Ridge Golf Course. In 1981 she was the first woman to pass the $1M mark in career earnings and in 1982 she tied and then beat Mickey Wright's record of 82 wins. World Golf Hall of Fame member Lee Trevino takes us back to three very important U.S. Opens in his career, the 1966 Open at Olympic Club for which he qualified and won $600 for a 54th place finish, the 1967 event at Baltusrol where a 5th place showing earned him $6,000 and playing privileges for the rest of that season, and the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill where Lee won his first major and becoming the first winner ever to score in the 60's in each of his four rounds. Six-time major championship winner Lee Trevino begins his story with a few hilarious tales involving him and Bruce Devlin before he takes us back to his humble upbringing in Texas. Raised by his mother and grandfather, Lee was self-taught as a golfer but undisciplined as a young man. Entering the Marine Corps at age 17 was a life-changing experience for Lee and it wasn't until age 23 that he began to take the game more seriously. He hadn't heard of Jack Nicklaus when the PGA came to the Dallas Athletic Club in 1963. Qualifying for the 1966 U.S. Open at Olympic Club provided him with an opportunity to see elite players first-hand. 1990 LPGA Championship winner, Beth Daniel looks back on her late wins on tour including her final victory at the 2003 BMO Canadian Women’s Open where, at age 47, she became the oldest winner ever on the LPGA Tour. Listen in as Beth recounts her final tournament, the 2007 Women’s British Open played at the Old Course at St. Andrews. She laments not winning the U.S. Open and takes us through her consecutive close calls with seconds in 1981 and 1982. She played in the first eight Solheim Cups and was honored with her selection as Captain of the U.S. side in 2009, a win at Rich Harvest Farms. Winner of 33 LPGA tournaments, Beth Daniel recalls what life was like traveling the country as a tour rookie. Beth recounts her first wins, first in Japan and then in the U.S. at the 1979 Patty Berg Classic. She shares her experiences with some of the early greats in the game like Kathy Whitworth, Judy Rankin and others. Beth talks about her first bout of the yips, what she did to overcome this and the “Zone” she was in winning 11 events over a span of 13 months in 1989 & 1990. She won her only major at the 1990 LPGA Championship by 1 shot over Rosie Jones and continued her winning ways into the ’90’s.
