Hello, and welcome to Films for the Void, episode #114! I am your host, Landon Defever, and my guest today is an indie/emo singer-songwriter based in Cincinnati, Ohio. For six years, she was the co-vocalist and guitarist for No Sleep Records pop-punk band Mixtapes, releasing three studio albums and touring with the likes of Bayside, Real Friends, and Masked Intruder. The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2014, but she soldiered on with various projects, releasing her debut solo album I Was Due for a Heartbreak on Don Giovanni Records back in 2023. Now she’s back with her follow up studio album Strange Devotion , which came out this past Friday on Feel It Records, and you can catch her on the road with Future Teens and Adjy in late October through early November. My guests today are the husband-and-wife duo behind emo independent record label Count Your Lucky Stars, home to bands like Camp Trash, Star Funeral, and Thank You I’m Sorry, along with alumni such as Foxing, Free Throw, and Snowing. The pair are also the minds behind Michigan emo band Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). While the band was active for ten years, the pair decided to hang things up in 2016, but have recently reunited to play Best Friends Forever Festival in Las Vegas on October 10-12 alongside headliners Minus the Bear, Jawbreaker, and Jimmy Eat World. If you can’t make it to Vegas, however, they’ll be playing a string of shows leading up to the festival across the US, kicking things off on September 27 at the Orchid Theater in Ferndale Michigan. On June 23, 2025, The New York Times released their list of The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, composed of the opinions of more than 500 influential directors, actors, and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world. Their thoughts on the best films released since January 1, 2000 were collected, tallied, and ranked as a touchstone for cinema so far this century. If that wasn’t enough, however, The New York Times also opened a list for users to submit their ten favorite films of the century. The final list was posted on July 2, 2025 and, as an added bonus, the list contained the Top 500 films submitted in ranked order. Frankly, this was too good of an opportunity not to do a deep dive over what cinematic achievements have stuck with us the longest and learn what lessons we can learn from two-and-a-half decades of cinema. For nearly two decades now, the band (alongside drummer Kyle Fisher) has taken a love for punk and applied it with massive hard rock riffs and a spirited attitude all its own. The band’s upcoming album The Lash comes out July 25 on Dine Alone Records. You can catch the band opening for Heart Attack Man in the United States and Canada in July and August, in Canada on a headliner this September, and in Europe playing alongside Spanish Love Songs in October. I am your host, Landon Defever, and my guest today is a writer, director, and storyboard artist whose past credits include Regular Show, Sanjay and Craig, OK KO, The Mighty Ones, and Jellystone . However, he’s making his feature length directorial debut with the new film AJ GOES TO THE DOG PARK! For those unaware, AJ Goes to the Dog Park is about a man named AJ, played by actor AJ Thompson, who loses his favorite dog park and how he must fight, fish, scrap, scrape, and sap to get it back. AJ Goes to the Dog Park opens in limited release on Friday, July 25. However, if you’re lucky enough to live in Columbus, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, or Chicago, you can see the film on its Midwest Road Trip tour, featuring the writer/director himself, as well as AJ, in person.
