If you've noticed you're hungry an hour after a full meal, wide awake at 2am after doing everything right, or flat after a workout that used to leave you energized, you're not imagining it, and you're far from the only one. This episode features Krista Scott-Dixon, a coach and educator with decades of experience in behavior change and health coaching. Krista spent years as director of curriculum at Precision Nutrition and now does similar work with Girls Gone Strong's menopause coaching materials, alongside a private coaching practice that includes clients ranging from everyday women to search and rescue teams. Her new book brings real counseling and therapy tools into nutrition and health coaching, built on the idea that most coaches, and most women, were never actually taught how change happens. Together, we get into why hunger, energy, mood, and sleep can all stop feeling reliable somewhere in your 40s and 50s, and why treating perimenopause as one hormone problem misses what's actually going on. Krista makes the case that this stage belongs in the same category as a major illness, a career change, an identity shift, or the end of a relationship. She also introduces the idea of self-trust as a skill, one that gets socialized out of most women long before hormones ever enter the picture. If you've been white-knuckling your way through a body that no longer responds the way it used to, this conversation will change how you think about what's actually happening, and what to do with it. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why your hunger, fullness, and energy signals can suddenly feel unreliable in your 40s and 50s Why perimenopause belongs in the same category as a major illness, career change, or relationship ending, and why that reframe matters What self-trust actually is as a skill, and when most women lose access to it Why the health advice that used to work on your body stops working, and what that has to do with trust rather than effort The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've started to wonder whether something is wrong with you because your body stopped responding the way it used to, this episode gives you a different way to understand what's happening. You'll walk away seeing your hunger, your energy, and your mood as information instead of a malfunction, and understanding that self-trust is a skill you can rebuild. This conversation is for the woman who's exhausted from trying to force an old rulebook onto a body and a life that have both changed, and who's ready to stop treating that as a personal failure. You've cleaned out the pantry. You've laid your workout clothes out the night before. You've followed the plan, more than once, and it still hasn't held. If you've ever wondered why healthy habits don't stick, even when you're doing everything the experts tell you to do, this episode explains exactly why. In this episode, Elizabeth Sherman breaks down a framework she's used with clients for years, adapted from Neuro-Linguistic Programming's Logical Levels of Change, that explains why some changes hold for good and others quietly fall apart. Most diet and fitness advice only ever touches the top three layers of that framework: environment, habits, and skills. This episode goes underneath that, into the layers that actually decide whether change is permanent. You'll hear the full story of Elizabeth's client Chris, who lost a hundred pounds and still spent years afraid she'd revert back to her old patterns, the way every previous diet had ended. What let that fear go wasn't another habit. It was a shift much deeper than that. This episode is for any woman in midlife who feels like she knows exactly what to do for her health and still can't get it to hold. By the end, you'll understand the real difference between protecting a plan and simply becoming someone whose healthy choices take care of themselves. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why building better habits and cleaning up your environment hasn't been enough to make your health changes last, and what's actually missing underneath them The six-layer framework, adapted from NLP's Logical Levels of Change, that explains why some changes stick for good and others fall apart The identity shift that let Elizabeth's client Chris stop fearing she'd revert back to her old patterns after losing 100 pounds The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years believing that lasting health just requires a better habit or a cleaner kitchen, this episode offers real relief: nothing has been wrong with your effort. You've likely just been working at the layer of change that was never built to hold on its own. By the end, you'll have language for something you've probably felt for years but never had a name for: the difference between managing a health plan you're constantly defending and simply living as the healthy version of yourself. That distinction alone can lift years of quiet dread about reverting back to old patterns. You've been told that looking older is a problem, and that the fix is a shelf full of serums, creams, and a morning-and-night routine that eats your money and your time. In this episode, Elizabeth Sherman makes a different case: the thing that actually shows up on your face as you age isn't a missing product. It's stress. And the skincare industry will never say that out loud, because there's nothing to sell you against it. Elizabeth pulls this apart from a mall in Boston, where she catches her own brain deciding a new dress and a new couch will make her life better. That same pull, she explains, is exactly what happens when you look in the mirror at 55 and reach for the next bottle. She then does something most people in the wellness space won't: she lays out her own privilege honestly, including the cosmetic work she's had done and the reasons she looks the way she does at 57, so you can see clearly what's actually driving how a face ages. The turn in this episode is the part that matters most. Some of your stress is structural and you can't change it. But a second layer, the worrying, the anxiety, the resentment about things you can't control, is yours, and it's costing you more than the circumstance itself. Elizabeth connects this to what chronic stress does to your body over time and to research on how your beliefs about aging affect how long and how well you live. This isn't a stress-management protocol, and it isn't another product to buy. It's a clear look at why you're spending money and mornings on something that was never going to work the way it promised, and what to pay attention to instead. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why two women the same age can look a decade apart, and why it has almost nothing to do with their skincare shelf The difference between the stress you can't change and the stress you're adding on top, and which one is aging you What Elizabeth has actually done to her own face, and the surprising reason she did most of it The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've ever stood at a counter and handed over real money for a small bottle because someone told you what it would do for the lines around your eyes, this episode is going to feel like a weight coming off. You are not failing at aging, and you are not behind. You've been sold a fix for a problem that a product can't touch. What you'll walk away with is permission to stop, and something more useful than another routine: a clear-eyed way to see where your stress is actually coming from, what part of it is yours to work with, and why the resentment you're carrying about the rest is quietly doing more damage than the circumstance ever could. That awareness is where real change starts, and it costs you nothing. You already know what to do. Eat better, move your body, all of it. So why does the plan fall apart again by Wednesday? This episode is pulled straight from a live class I recently taught, close to word for word, because the response from the women who attended was strong enough that I wanted to bring it to you too. Inside, I walk through five real, often invisible reasons healthy habits quietly stop working for smart, capable women in midlife, and almost none of them have anything to do with willpower. You'll meet four different women along the way. One is fighting a rule about food she never actually chose. Another has exactly one hour in her day that belongs to her and no one else, except it never seems to survive contact with a Tuesday. There's a good chance you'll recognize a piece of yourself in more than one of them. By the end, you won't walk away with a new meal plan or a new morning routine. You'll walk away with something more useful: a much clearer sense of where your own particular friction point actually lives. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why "just try harder" was never actually a strategy, and what's genuinely been missing instead The five specific places where midlife health habits quietly break down, and why more than one might sound familiar How to tell the difference between the friction point that's loudest in your life and the one that's actually driving everything else The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years quietly assuming something was wrong with you every time a health plan fell apart, this episode is going to feel like relief. It explains why the plans you've already tried were solving for the wrong thing in the first place. You'll leave with language for a pattern you've probably lived inside of for years without ever being able to name it, and having the words for it tends to change how it feels to keep going. You start Monday with a plan. Eat the vegetables, take the walk, get to bed at a decent hour. And by Thursday it's come apart, and you're standing in your kitchen at night wondering what is wrong with you that you can't just do the thing you already know how to do. If you've been quietly deciding that you're the problem, this episode is going to hand you a very different place to look. Elizabeth opens with a client who couldn't manage to drink water all day, until she changed one small thing about her setup and the problem disappeared without her trying any harder. From there, she gets into a story about an entire city that dropped its smoking rate sharply without making a single person quit. The thread running through both is the one almost no health advice will tell you: your surroundings are shaping what you do all day long, whether you're paying attention to them or not. Then she walks through the places this actually shows up in your life. The food within arm's reach and the clutter and noise you've stopped noticing. The partner who comes home with pizza the night you planned to cook, the friend you only ever see over a bottle of wine, the mother you love best over a big plate of food. The schedule that runs you into the ground for everybody but you. This is the layer women are least likely to examine, because we've been taught that our health is a personal responsibility, so when it slips, we point the finger inward. The honest part, and the reason this episode matters, is that you can't really see your own environment from the inside. It's too familiar. The very things making this hard are the ones you'll walk right past. This episode helps you start seeing them, and points you toward the quickest way to find out which one is costing you the most right now. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why an entire city's smoking rate dropped sharply without anyone being told to quit, and what that has to do with your water and your walk The three layers of your environment quietly deciding how hard your healthy habits feel, and which one women almost never look at Why changing your social environment can feel like abandoning the people you love, and what to do with that fear instead of ignoring it The reason what's in your fridge might be telling you a much older story than you think Why you genuinely can't assess your own environment from the inside, and what actually helps you see it clearly The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years believing you're the reason your health keeps sliding, this episode offers something closer to relief than another plan. You are not missing some amount of grit that everyone else was handed. You've been trying to run your health inside a life that was quietly working against you, and no one ever told you that the setup was fair game to question. When you stop treating your follow-through as a character flaw and start treating it as a set of conditions you can actually see and change, the whole thing gets lighter. You get to keep the people you love and still take care of yourself. You get to change your surroundings instead of waging war on yourself every single day. And once you can see clearly which piece of your environment is costing you the most, you finally have somewhere useful to start. You finish the busy stretch. The launch, the deadline, the holidays, the season where everyone needed something from you. You held it all together. And then, the second you finally stop, you get sick. Or your back goes out reaching for a sock. If that pattern sounds familiar, this episode explains what your body has been doing to you for years, and why it keeps happening the moment you slow down. Here's the part almost no one connects: the reason you can't follow through on the healthy stuff you already know how to do might have nothing to do with willpower. You're running on empty. And a body running that low on reserves can't hold a good choice in place at six o'clock when you're wiped out. In this episode I walk you through the real cost of never actually stopping, using a client I call Chris whose evening probably looks a lot like yours. We get into why you don't rest even though you know you should, the family rule that taught you to earn it, and the quieter belief running underneath that says the need for rest applies to everyone except you. I talk about how you multitask your own downtime until it stops counting, and why sleep is the first thing you cut even though your body doesn't work on credit. By the end, you'll see the pattern clearly. And you'll understand why seeing it and changing it are two different things, which is exactly where most smart women get stuck. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why you get sick or hurt the moment a busy stretch ends, and what your body was doing the whole time The real reason knowing what to do hasn't turned into doing it, and why "try harder" was never going to work The childhood rule about rest you're still living by, and the belief underneath it you've probably never said out loud Why you can't bank sleep on the weekend, and where the bill for skipping it actually shows up RESOURCES Take the quiz: Why Do Your Healthy Habits Keep Falling Apart? → elizabethsherman.com/quiz 8 Habits guide → elizabethsherman.com/habits 265 - "Just Do It" and Why We Don't 260 - 8 Habits & Why They Don't Stick 257 - The Truth About Step Goals, Belly Fat, and Burnout Hey! You said you'd make dinner. Then you got home, opened the freezer, saw the chicken still frozen solid, and thought: I cannot do this. So you grabbed the rotisserie chicken from the deli case, put it on plates, and sat there feeling like a fraud for not cooking it yourself. Sound familiar? If you're a capable woman who runs a department, a household, or both, and can handle almost anything, except being reliable with your own health, this episode is going to hit close to home. You've probably decided you're lazy, or that you haven't found the right plan yet, or that something is wrong with you specifically. None of that is true, and this episode explains what's actually happening. Here's the sentence at the center of it: "I just need one more hour in the day." You've said it in the car, to your sister, to yourself at 11pm. Elizabeth makes the case that it's a lie, not one you're telling on purpose, but one you need to be true because the real answer is harder. She walks through exactly where that hour would go if someone handed it to you tomorrow, and why your health keeps getting cut while everything else on your list survives. This is the episode for the woman who is loved, needed, and running on empty, and who's starting to suspect that her follow-through problem was never about time or discipline at all. It won't hand you a system to fix it in five easy steps. It will show you the pattern so clearly you won't be able to unsee it. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why your health is the first thing to get cut from your day, and what it has in common with every other thing you drop when you're overloaded The hidden second half of "I just need one more hour" that you never say out loud, and what it reveals about where your time actually goes Why saying no fills you with guilt and requires a "good enough" excuse, when the men around you can decline without explaining themselves at all The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've spent years quietly ashamed that you can hold together a career, a household, and everyone else's needs but can't stay consistent with a walk or a real dinner, this episode will lift an enormous weight off you. You are not lazy and you are not broken. You are full. And the relief of finally understanding that is real. You get one body and one life, and nobody is coming to hand back the hours you've been giving away. That's a hard thing to hear, and this episode says it with love, not a lecture. You'll walk away seeing your own pattern with a clarity you've never had, and understanding that recognizing it is the first honest step toward actually changing it. Years ago, Elizabeth stood in a kitchen at a party complaining about brownies, and a woman she barely knew looked over and said, "I guess I just listen to my body," and walked out. Elizabeth thought she was insufferable. She also had no idea what the woman was talking about. She'd been in the fitness world for years. She knew macros and training programs and the protein content of just about anything. And she could not have told you the first thing about what her body was actually saying to her. If you know exactly what you should be doing for your health and still can't get yourself to do it, this episode is going to feel familiar. Because the reason usually isn't a lack of information, and it isn't about trying harder. Somewhere along the way you learned to override what your body tells you, and you got so good at it that you don't even hear it anymore. In this episode, Elizabeth walks through what that override looks like in a real day. Wanting pasta, eating the chicken and salad the plan allows, then standing over the counter eating almonds out of the bag and never feeling satisfied. Resisting the cookies all week and then eating seven of them on a Thursday night. Sitting exhausted on the couch at 8pm and deciding it's "too early" for bed. Biting your tongue for weeks and then coming unglued over a glass left on the counter. Every one of those is your body asking for something, and every one of those is a moment you talked yourself out of hearing it. And here's the part that makes midlife women feel like they're losing it: this used to work. At 30, you could ignore your body and recover fine. Now one bad night of sleep costs you three days, and the strategy you built decades ago has quietly stopped working. Elizabeth explains why that happens in perimenopause and menopause, and what it means for whether you can actually follow through on the things you already know how to do. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why "listen to your body" has probably never meant anything real to you, and what the phrase is actually pointing at The everyday moments you override your body without noticing, across food, movement, sleep, and unspoken stress Why pushing through worked at 30 and quietly stopped working in your mid-40s What your cravings, 3am wake-ups, and afternoon crashes have been trying to tell you the whole time The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've been calling yourself lazy or broken because you know what to do and still don't do it, this episode hands you a more accurate explanation. Your body has been talking to you the whole time. The brain fog, the cravings, the exhaustion, the mood that turns on a dime, none of it means something is wrong with you. Your body is communicating, and you were trained to tune it out, and in midlife that costs you more than it used to. The relief here is that this is learnable. Elizabeth didn't know how to hear her body either, and she does now, and that changed whether she could actually stick with the things she already knew. You are not a different kind of person than the women who seem to do this easily. You just haven't been taught the one thing that makes following through stop feeling like a fight with yourself. You know what to do. You could probably teach it. You know to eat more vegetables, get to bed earlier, and move your body most days. And you still end up standing in your kitchen at nine o'clock at night, arguing with yourself about whether you're allowed to have the chocolate. If that scene feels a little too familiar, this episode is for you. Here's the part nobody tells you. The reason you can't do the thing you already know how to do has nothing to do with how much willpower or discipline you have. It's that you're carrying a long list of food rules you never actually chose. Somebody handed them to you when you were young, before you had any way to question them, and they've been running quietly in the background ever since. In this first episode of the pillar series, Elizabeth walks through where that second voice in the kitchen came from, why decades of dieting taught you to treat your own hunger as the enemy, and why knowing everything about nutrition has never once been enough to change what you do at night. She makes a claim that gets a little bit of pushback: if you're eating for any reason other than hunger, that's emotional eating, and there is nothing wrong with it. She also names the way exercise quietly turned into the thing you do to pay off what you ate. This one leaves you seeing your own pattern clearly, maybe for the first time. Because once you understand whose voice is doing the arguing at nine o'clock, the whole thing looks different. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM MIDLIFE WOMEN FACE HERE The biggest reason midlife women can't follow through on their health has nothing to do with missing information or a shortage of willpower. It's that decades of diet history installed a set of food rules, absorbed young from a mother, a sister, a boyfriend, or a magazine, that taught them their own body could not be trusted. Hunger got labeled a problem. Cravings got labeled a weakness. Wanting a specific food got treated as proof that something was broken in them. So every food decision turns into an argument between a rule and a body signal, and the woman has already been taught to side against her own body. That is why she can know exactly what to do and still not do it. The information was never the missing piece. The unexamined rules are what's running the show. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why a woman who actually trusted her own body wouldn't be standing in the kitchen arguing with herself in the first place Where your food rules really came from, and why so many of them contradict each other yet still feel mandatory The reason knowing everything about nutrition never turns into doing it, and why more information won't fix it How exercise quietly became a debt you pay off after eating, and what that does to your sleep, your cravings, and your mood RESOURCES Take the quiz: Why Do Your Healthy Habits Keep Falling Apart? You're showing up. You're doing the workouts, sending the emails, reaching out to friends, eating the way you're supposed to eat. And yet something feels off. The results aren't coming. The friendships aren't deepening. The business isn't growing. And underneath all of it is a quiet, low-grade resentment you can't quite name. This episode is about what's actually driving that feeling. Not a lack of effort. Not bad luck. A belief most of us have been carrying since childhood that doing the right things automatically earns us what we want. And the way that belief quietly runs your health, your relationships, and your life without you realizing it. Elizabeth shares a personal story from a recent night in Mexico that stopped her cold: catching herself judging her husband, then recognizing the exact same pattern in herself. What followed was an honest look at where this expectation comes from, what it costs midlife women specifically, and what it actually takes to start getting the results you want. This one will make you uncomfortable in the best possible way. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why doing everything "right" can still leave you stuck, and what's actually missing Where the belief that effort automatically earns results comes from, and why midlife is when it stops working What self-pity actually looks like from the inside (hint: it doesn't feel like self-pity at all) The real reason women in midlife struggle to build friendships, grow their businesses, and make their health habits stick Why seeing a pattern in yourself is not the same as being able to move through it alone The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've been doing the things and still not getting the results, this episode will give you a completely different explanation for why. Not a discipline problem. Not a willpower problem. A conditioned belief that was installed in you long before you had any say in it, and that has been quietly running in the background ever since. Understanding that is the first step toward something actually changing. Most women who listen to this episode will recognize themselves in it immediately. The waiting. The quiet resentment. The sense that something is unfair but you can't quite put your finger on what. This episode names that clearly and honestly, and points you toward the one shift that makes everything else possible: recognizing that the life you want is not going to arrive on its own. You are the one who has to build it. And that is not a punishment. It's just how it works. Leaking, pressure, and hip pain: it's not just aging. If you've been quietly living with any of those symptoms and assuming it's just what happens to women's bodies over time, this episode is going to change that story. Dr. Mary Alice Vetter is a doctor of physical therapy who specializes in pelvic floor care, and what she sees in her practice every day is women who were told their symptoms were normal, not treatable. She calls them "the usuals." Her patients get sent home with a diagnosis, a shrug, and the expectation that they'll just manage around it. Most of them have been doing that for years. This conversation covers the full picture of pelvic floor health in midlife, including what prolapse actually is, who it affects, what the symptoms are, and why so many of those symptoms get misread as hip problems, back problems, or just aging. It also covers the connection between estrogen, menopause, and pelvic floor dysfunction, which is something most women have never been told. And if you've ever been told to do your Kegels and wondered why they're not helping, or suspected they might actually be making things worse, Mary Alice addresses that directly. The answer is probably not what you were expecting. She works virtually, so geography is not a barrier. You'll find her information in the show notes below. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN What pelvic floor dysfunction actually looks like in midlife women, including the symptoms that have nothing to do with leaking that most women are completely missing Why prolapse is far more common than women think, what the different types are, and what your options are beyond just "waiting to see if surgery is necessary" Why Kegels might not be the answer, and what Mary Alice actually prescribes first to every single patient regardless of what's going on The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most women over 40 who are dealing with pelvic floor issues have been told some version of "this is just what happens." They leave their doctor's appointments without a real explanation, without a path forward, and often with a low-level shame about something they didn't cause and don't know how to fix. This episode removes the information gap and replaces it with something more useful: a clearer picture of what's actually happening in the body, what the options are, and the knowledge that what feels embarrassing to talk about is actually incredibly common and very treatable. If any part of your body has been talking to you in ways you've been ignoring, this episode gives you the language, the framework, and the permission to stop waiting. Chris noticed the bathroom trips increasing first. More frequency, more urgency, and a ready explanation sitting right there: she'd started drinking a lot more water. Made sense. Case closed, as far as she was concerned. Except it kept going. Her body started feeling different as she lost weight, so that got filed under weight loss too. Then constipation showed up, and she was eating more vegetables than she ever had. None of it added up on its own, and none of it seemed serious enough to mention to anyone. She's a nurse. She goes to her appointments. She was paying closer attention to her body than she ever had in her life, and she still spent years explaining away symptoms that had a name she didn't know to ask for. That name is pelvic organ prolapse. Chris talks through what it actually felt like: the frequency, the pressure when sitting, the moment a doctor said the word and she immediately pictured women decades older than herself. She talks about trying a pessary ring and hating it, about deciding to have surgery, and about the shame that kept her from telling anyone outside her husband and her coach. She also shares something her own doctor told her that reframed the whole thing: losing fat means losing estrogen, and estrogen is part of what supports the pelvic floor. Weight loss, perimenopause, and pelvic floor strength were all happening in her body at once, and no one had ever connected those dots for her before. What You'll Learn: Why urinary urgency and frequency during weight loss or perimenopause can point to something other than hydration or hormones alone How fat loss affects estrogen levels, and why that matters for pelvic floor support What the three stages of prolapse progression can look like day to day, including symptoms that don't involve pain Why so many women, including women in medicine, never get asked about their pelvic floor at a routine exam What You Can Do Right Now: At your next appointment, ask directly: is there any sign of pelvic organ prolapse, and how is my pelvic floor doing? Don't wait for the question to come to you. If the answer feels rushed or dismissive, that's information too, and it may be worth finding a provider who will actually engage with it. Caught early, at stage one or stage two, prolapse can often be improved with the right pelvic floor therapy. Chris's case had already progressed past that point by the time it was named. The Listener Takeaway: Chris knew her body better than most people do. She still needed someone else to name what was happening before she could act on it. If something in your body has felt off in a way you've been quietly explaining away, that's worth a direct conversation with your doctor, not another few months of your own theories. Chris has been on a diet since she was eleven years old. Keto, Atkins, Weight Watchers, the five-bite diet, and about a dozen things in between. She lost weight on every single one of them. She also gained it back every time. When she found this podcast and eventually started working with Elizabeth, she was not expecting anything different. She'd done the plans. She knew what plans could do, and what they couldn't. What she didn't expect was that somewhere in the process, the weight would stop being the point. In this episode of Done with Dieting, Elizabeth talks with Chris, a long-term client and former listener, about what 100 pounds of weight loss actually looks like from the inside. Not the plan. Not the food rules. The real shift: the one that happened when Chris stopped treating her eating as a discipline problem and started understanding what was actually driving it. If you've ever thought that real, lasting change isn't available to you because you've failed at it enough times to have evidence, this conversation is going to challenge that belief. Chris is a nurse. She is smart, informed, and spent decades doing everything she was supposed to do. And she still couldn't make it stick, until she understood why. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why women who know exactly what to do still can't make it stick, and what's actually getting in the way What changes when weight loss stops being the goal, and why that shift is what finally made the results last for Chris How decades of people-pleasing and putting everyone else first shows up in your eating, and what it looks like when that pattern starts to change Why Chris, a nurse with full access to medical knowledge, still couldn't see what was happening in her own body until she had outside support The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most weight loss content gives you information you already have. Another plan, another set of rules, another promise that this time will be different if you just follow the steps correctly. Chris's story is not that. She'd followed the steps. Many times. What changed was not the plan. What changed was her understanding of why food had been doing a job she didn't know it was doing, and what happened when she found other ways to meet those needs. If you've been carrying quiet shame about not being able to make your health habits stick, this episode is going to reframe what that struggle actually means. It doesn't mean you lack commitment. It means you've been solving the wrong problem. Chris figured that out. This is her telling you what that looked like, in plain language, with no performance. You have probably been following the same health rules for decades. Eat less, move more. Hit your calorie goal. Keep your body guessing. And if none of it is working the way it used to, you have likely been blaming yourself. This episode is here to tell you the rules are the problem, not you. In episode 278, Elizabeth Sherman calls out five of the most persistent health myths still circulating in midlife wellness spaces, and makes the case for why each one is actively working against women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. These are not fringe ideas from obscure corners of the internet. These are the rules most of us absorbed before we were old enough to question them, and they are still showing up in articles, on social media, and in the advice women give each other every single day. This is not a gentle reframe. Elizabeth names the specific rules, where they came from, why they fall apart for midlife women, and what to think about instead. If you have ever done everything right and still felt like your body was not cooperating, this episode is going to explain a lot. By the end of this episode, you will have a clearer picture of what has actually been getting in your way, and a more honest starting point for what to do next. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why the 1200 calorie rule is an arbitrary number that has nothing to do with your actual body, your size, your hormones, or your activity level How eat less, move more oversimplifies the hormonal and metabolic reality of midlife, and why chronic restriction can work directly against the results you are chasing What exercise is actually for at this stage of life, and why using it to burn off food is costing you more than it is giving you Why body size is one of the least useful health measures you have access to, and what to pay attention to instead The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most women in midlife are not struggling because they lack information. They are struggling because they are working from a set of rules that were never designed for their bodies, their hormones, or their lives. This episode gives you permission to put those rules down, not as a shortcut, but because they have been misdirecting your energy for years. When you stop trying to make broken rules work, you free up a lot of capacity to focus on what actually does. The relief in this episode is real and immediate. But it also points to something deeper. Knowing which rules to let go of is a start. Understanding why the right behaviors still do not stick, even when you know what they are, is where the real work begins. If you've opened your podcast app recently and noticed something different, you're not imagining it. The show has a new name. Well, an old name. Sort of. In this short bonus episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what happened when I changed "Done with Dieting" to "Total Health in Midlife" in 2023, why downloads dropped, and why I stayed with a name that wasn't working far longer than I should have. Spoiler: it had nothing to do with the content and everything to do with fear of looking like I couldn't follow through. Here's what I didn't expect. The story of this name change ended up being a pretty honest mirror of the exact thing I help women work through every day. Staying stuck in something that isn't working because changing it feels like admitting something about yourself. Sound familiar? This one is short, honest, and worth the ten minutes. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why a podcast name change in 2023 caused downloads to drop significantly, and what that revealed about how women actually search for help How deferring to someone else's framework over your own gut instinct plays out in business AND in your health Why the word "midlife" was quietly turning away the exact women this show was built for The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters This episode is really about one thing: what happens when you outsource your own judgment because you're afraid of what it says about you if you change course. I did it with a podcast name. You may be doing it with your health, following a plan someone else designed, staying in a program that stopped working, not because it's right for you but because quitting feels like failure. The show is back to "Done with Dieting: Total Health for Women 40+." The content hasn't changed. The approach hasn't changed. When a room full of financial advisors was asked when they planned to prioritize their health, the most common answer was the same one their clients give about saving for retirement: when things slow down. Elizabeth was in that room. And that answer is exactly why she was there. In this episode of Total Health in Midlife, Elizabeth shares the framework she brought to that room, called the Health-Wealth-Time framework, and why the gap most women never see coming is not in their savings account. It is in the body they are going to show up with when they finally have the time and money to live the life they spent decades building. This is not a scare tactic. It is a mirror. Because the retirement you are picturing, the trips, the grandkids, the energy to actually say yes to things, does not happen automatically. It is built now, in the small decisions you are making today about whether your health is a priority or a someday. Elizabeth also shares two women from her own life whose retirements looked nothing alike, and what the difference between them actually came down to. The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most women in midlife are not ignoring their health because they don't care. They are deferring it because everything else feels more urgent, and health doesn't send an invoice until much later. By the time the bill arrives, the window to build the body you wanted to retire into has gotten a lot smaller. This episode gives you a concrete framework for understanding the real cost of that pattern, and a clear next step for figuring out what is actually getting in your way. Not the surface answer. The real one. Because the retirement you are picturing is worth protecting, and the time to protect it is now. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why "I'll get to it when things slow down" is the most expensive sentence in the room, and what it is actually costing you in ways that don't show up until it's much harder to fix How the Health-Wealth-Time framework shifts across every stage of life, and which lever most midlife women are quietly running on empty without realizing it What the compounding cost of small health deferrals actually looks like over time, and why it is never one big decision that gets you, it is a thousand small ones that became the default RESOURCES Elizabeth Sherman's Speaking page Take A Free Quiz & learn what is keeping you from applying the health habits that you know you could be doing. Most women leave for vacation in a good rhythm. They're eating well, feeling good, and fully intending to keep it going on the road. Then the airport happens. Then the hotel breakfast buffet. Then dinner out every night with no familiar guardrails in sight. By the time they land back home, they need days, sometimes weeks, just to feel like themselves again. In this episode, Elizabeth breaks down why travel specifically derails healthy eating, and why it keeps happening even to women who have their health pretty well handled at home. The problem has nothing to do with caring or not caring. It has everything to do with the conditions that make your habits work at home not traveling with you. Elizabeth shares stories from her own travel, including an Alaskan cruise early in her health journey where swollen feet and blisters from loose shoes were the physical receipt from a week of eating past what her body needed, and a trip to Italy where she and her husband were taking daily naps without realizing the low energy was connected to what she was eating. Each trip taught her something. And what she's learned adds up to a simple, practical approach that lets you actually enjoy the trip and come home feeling like yourself. This episode is not about packing protein bars in your suitcase or skipping dessert in Rome. It's about finding the lane between eating everything in sight and being on a diet the whole trip. That lane exists. And once you know how to find it, travel stops being something you have to recover from. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why the women who feel most confident before a trip are often the ones who struggle most when they get home The one question to ask yourself before you leave that changes how every food decision on the trip feels Why the choice between "vacation mode" and white-knuckling it is a false one, and what's actually available in between The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters You don't have to choose between having a good trip and feeling good when you get home. Those two things are not in conflict. But most women have only ever experienced one or the other, so it genuinely feels like a choice. This episode shows you why that pattern keeps repeating, what's structurally causing it, and what a different approach actually looks like in practice. The goal isn't a perfect trip. It's coming home feeling like yourself. Not bloated, not behind, not already dreading Monday. Just back, rested enough, and ready to pick up where you left off. That's available to you on every trip you take from here forward. RESOURCES Travel Success Playbook Free Quiz Hey! I love hearing from you. Send me a text. Let me know what resonated with you. In twenty years of working with women on their health, I've noticed something that doesn't get talked about enough. Some women come out of summer feeling really good. Lighter, more relaxed, like the season actually did something for them. And some women arrive at Labor Day feeling puffy, sluggish, and like they need a full reset before they can even think about their health again. The difference between those two women is not what you think it is. Summer still carries that old nostalgia, even if you haven't been in school for decades. The looser schedule, the slower pace, the feeling that the rules are a little more relaxed. That pull is real. But summer has the ability to either support your health or quietly derail it, and most women never see it coming because the spiral doesn't start in July. It starts in May. In this episode of Total Health in Midlife, Elizabeth breaks down why the summer health spiral is so predictable, why it has nothing to do with motivation or willpower, and what is actually driving the pattern for women who keep arriving at September swearing next year will be different. If you are listening to this in June, you still have time to do this differently. But only if you understand what you're actually dealing with. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why the summer eating spiral starts in May, not July, and what is already happening in your body and schedule before summer officially begins How the weekday/weekend eating pattern and the school year/summer pattern are the same all-or-nothing cycle running at two different scales, and why seeing that changes everything Why the fix for summer eating has nothing to do with a better summer plan, and what actually needs to change if you want to stop arriving at Labor Day feeling like you need a reset The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters Most women treat the summer health spiral as a summer problem. They look for better strategies for navigating BBQs, vacations, and unstructured weekends. Those strategies have their place, but they don't get to the root of why the spiral keeps happening year after year. The real issue is not what you're eating in July. It's how you've been living since September. When you understand that the summer blowout is a predictable response to nine months of running at full capacity without real rest or pleasure built in, you stop blaming yourself for lacking motivation and start seeing the actual structural problem. That shift alone changes how you approach not just this summer, but every season that follows. You do not have to earn your summer. You do not have to survive it. There is a version of this season where you are actually in it and still feel like yourself when September arrives. You already know what you're supposed to do. You've read the articles, tried the plans, and given yourself more fresh starts than you can count. So why isn't it working? And more importantly, why does the idea of asking someone for help feel like admitting you've failed at something you should be able to handle yourself? That's exactly what this episode is about. Elizabeth opens with a story she's told before, but with a new lens: standing in her dining room in her workout clothes, staring at empty chocolate wrappers, while being a certified nutritionist and personal trainer. All the information in the world, and still stuck. What finally moved the needle wasn't more information. It was getting help. This episode walks through why women in midlife keep trying to solve their health problems alone, where that conditioning comes from, what it actually costs over time, and what tends to happen the moment they finally stop. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why knowing exactly what to do with your health still isn't enough, and what actually bridges that gap Where the belief "I should be able to do this on my own" comes from, and why it keeps so many capable women stuck for years longer than necessary What Elizabeth's clients almost universally say the moment they finally ask for help, and why that response tells you everything you need to know The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you have been circling the same health problems for years, eating better for a week and then sliding back, starting over every Monday, telling yourself you just need more consistency, this episode is going to reframe what's actually happening. The problem is not that you lack information or capability. The problem is that some things are genuinely harder to see and solve from inside them. And the belief that you should be able to figure it out alone is often the exact thing keeping you stuck inside it. Being witnessed, having someone in your corner who can see your situation clearly and help you make sense of it, is not a luxury. It is often the thing that collapses years of spinning into months of actual progress. This episode gives you permission to stop making it harder than it has to be. Hey! I love hearing from you. You know what you're supposed to do. Eat better, move more, get to bed at a decent hour. You have the information. You've had it for years. And yet, at some point between making the plan and the moment it actually matters, something shifts. You end up exactly where you didn't want to be, again, and you can't quite explain why. There's a quote that gets attributed to Maya Angelou: we do the best we can with what we know, and when we know better, we do better. Most women in midlife reject that idea immediately, because they do know better. That's the whole problem. But there are four words missing from that quote that explain everything. And once you hear them, the gap between knowing and doing is never going to look the same way again. In this episode, Elizabeth breaks down exactly what's happening in the moment your plan falls apart. Not in a vague, mindset-work kind of way. In a specific, here's-the-actual-mechanism kind of way. Your brain is offering you thoughts that feel completely true, completely reasonable, and have just enough logic in them to hold up for about thirty seconds. And you've been acting on them without knowing that's what you were doing. This episode is for you if you've ever finished a day wondering how you ended up so far from where you planned to be. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why knowing what to do has never been your actual problem, and what is actually driving your decisions in the moments that matter The two types of thoughts your brain offers when your plan and real life collide, and why both feel completely justified in the moment What a belief actually is, how it forms without you noticing, and why it's been quietly overriding your plans for years The Listener Takeaway: Why This Episode Matters If you've been blaming your follow-through, your resolve, or your ability to stay consistent, this episode is going to give you something more useful than another strategy. It's going to show you the actual mechanism behind the gap between knowing and doing. The relief isn't in finding a better plan. It's in understanding that you've been following through on your beliefs all along, and that those beliefs can be examined and changed. Women in midlife are not failing at their health goals because they lack information or motivation. They're acting on thoughts that feel like facts, thoughts about what they deserve, what's realistic, what counts, and what the consequences of their choices actually are. Once you can see the thought for what it is, you get to decide whether you want to keep believing it. That's not a small thing. That's where everything changes.
