Is Florian Wirtz really Liverpool's problem – or is the German becoming an easy scapegoat for much bigger issues? On Late Night Live, Craig pushes back against the growing criticism of Wirtz and argues that Liverpool's tactical set-up deserves far more scrutiny. After another frustrating performance, Craig questions whether the 4-2-3-1 is giving Liverpool the balance they need and explains why he would currently favour a switch to 4-3-3. Rather than judging Wirtz in isolation, Craig wants to see him given a proper opportunity as Liverpool's No.10 before conclusions are drawn. Could changing the midfield around him – potentially even giving Trey Nyoni an opportunity alongside Alexis Mac Allister – provide the balance Liverpool have been missing? Craig also discusses the wider underperformers in Liverpool's squad, with Ryan Gravenberch, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all coming into the conversation. In particular, Craig makes his position on Frimpong crystal clear, saying he'd be prepared to move the defender on because he doesn't believe the signing is going to work. It's a big debate about individual responsibility versus tactical responsibility – and whether Liverpool need to change the system before making Wirtz the fall guy. Craig argues that Liverpool's failure to beat Fulham was the product of a poor collective display, not one player Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
If Liverpool are prepared to spend another enormous transfer fee on their attack, should Michael Olise be the player they go all-out to sign? On Late Night Live, Craig discusses Liverpool’s future transfer strategy and the debate over spending another £100m+ on a forward when there are still obvious issues elsewhere in the squad. With Rayan potentially costing around £130m, Craig explains why he'd rather Liverpool pursue Olise if the Bayern star becomes available. But can Liverpool realistically afford another blockbuster attacker while also strengthening midfield and full-back? Craig looks at how player sales could help fund another major rebuild and why Champions League qualification will be crucial if Liverpool want to attract elite targets next summer. There’s also discussion around Liverpool's upcoming games, including Craig's concerns over Michael Oliver taking charge against Bournemouth and the need for the officials to avoid another major refereeing controversy. Plus, attention turns towards squad rotation and the opportunities that could be available to Liverpool's younger players. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
On Late Night Live, Craig looks at the latest reports linking Liverpool with Lamine Kamara and Manu Koné, with Roma reportedly having previously rejected an offer worth just over £51m for Koné. Craig weighs up the two midfielders, their potential prices and suitability for Liverpool before revealing why Kamara would comfortably be his preferred option. There’s also a huge debate around Liverpool’s future attacking plans following claims that Bournemouth forward Rayan could have a £130m release clause. Is that simply too much money – and if Liverpool are prepared to enter that price bracket, should they instead make a blockbuster move for Michael Olise? Plus, Craig discusses Liverpool’s options for the Spurs cup game, the possibility of James Chambers getting his opportunity and what the next transfer windows could look like as Liverpool attempt to reshape the squad. Craig's frustration with the squad-building model. He argues Liverpool shouldn't have to contemplate moving a quality centre-back into midfield simply because the squad lacks the midfielder it needs. That moves into FSG, the sporting-director situation, Liverpool repeatedly trying to solve multiple positions with one player and the expectation that managers continually have to overachieve. Craig opens Late Night Live looking ahead to Liverpool’s January plans and the upcoming Spurs game before a viewer raises one of the biggest early-season questions: will Florian Wirtz reach the level Liverpool paid for? Craig makes clear he hasn't given up on Wirtz, but admits the performances haven't been good enough so far. More interestingly, he questions whether Wirtz himself is actually the problem—or whether Liverpool playing with a dedicated No.10 is upsetting the balance of the side. That leads into Craig revealing that he's taken Wirtz out of his proposed XI against Spurs to experiment with Dominik Szoboszlai at No.10, before examining Liverpool's passing network against Fulham. He highlights Wirtz drifting into areas Alexander Isak wants to occupy and argues that a move towards a 4-3-3 midfield could give Liverpool better balance. The passing-network discussion gives this cut a strong tactical element. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Craig returns to the viewer poll about Alejandro Balde and discusses the report claiming Liverpool have made the Barcelona left-back a January priority. That develops naturally into the wider left-back problem: the decision to bring Kostas Tsimikas back, James Pearce's criticism of that decision, Milos Kerkez's form, Luke Chambers as an alternative and why genuine competition is needed. The strength of this cut is that it isn't just "Balde rumour reaction." It becomes a wider discussion about whether Liverpool got their summer planning at left-back wrong. Craig makes the argument that Tsimikas was the cheap option and that failing to properly replace Robertson could cost Liverpool. The transcript also gives you a strong debate around Kerkez: Craig isn't writing him off but believes competition is essential Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Craig examines Liverpool’s problems from the boardroom to the pitch, beginning with his understanding of why Xabi Alonso was not appointed and the debate over a manager’s influence on recruitment. He questions the team’s mentality, rejects early-season exhaustion as an explanation and calls for greater accountability under Andoni Iraola. Florian Wirtz’s creativity remains a concern, but Craig defends his pressing and insists criticism should extend beyond one player. Dominik Szoboszlai’s body language, physicality and potential as a future captain also come under scrutiny, alongside suggestions for a midfield three and an alternative role at right back. Craig then defends Anfield’s supporters, arguing that atmosphere needs something on the pitch to ignite it. The closing top-four poll captures the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool, with most voters lacking confidence. Improvement is possible, but the message throughout is that stronger leadership, better balance and greater responsibility are needed to restore belief among the fanbase. Craig questions whether the squad has the depth, aggression and leadership required to compete across four competitions. He scrutinises the backup options at left back, calls for patience with Bradley Barcola and challenges Dominik Szoboszlai to offer more than spectacular moments. The midfield’s balance comes under particular scrutiny, with Craig arguing that replacing Florian Wirtz at number ten would not necessarily solve Liverpool’s vulnerability when possession is lost. Could a midfield three restore control, and is an extra attacker restricting space? There is also discussion of the fullbacks, Anfield’s atmosphere and potential changes against Tottenham. Above all, Craig rejects tiredness as an excuse this early in the season and demands greater effort. Talent matters, but his message is clear: Liverpool need players prepared to fight, win their battles and take responsibility when performances begin to unravel. Learn more about your ad choices.
