Do you ever wake up with a to-do list already spinning in your head and feel like you have no real choices left? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson explains why overwhelm shrinks the options we can see and why a sense of choice matters so much to your nervous system. When your body senses you’re stuck, it moves into protection, making it even harder to think clearly. Leah shares three simple ways to interrupt that loop and find room to respond on purpose. You’ll learn how to separate what feels urgent from what’s truly important, how to spot what’s yours to choose, and how to make decisions based on your real capacity instead of pressure. Key Takeaways : Feeling stuck signals threat and pushes your body into protection. Urgency is a body sensation, not always an accurate read on the task. Important things like rest and connection rarely feel urgent. You can choose what you say, what you ask for, and what you stop carrying alone. Ask: given how I am right now, what response can I stand behind? Intentional waiting has a reason and a timeframe. Freezing does not. In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson explores what happens when family life shifts. A child moves out, a parent needs more help, someone marries, or a marriage ends. Even good changes can leave you unsettled, because your role, routines and sense of belonging shift along with them. Leah explains why your nervous system reacts before you’ve made sense of the change, and shares four simple ways to find your footing. Key Takeaways: Family change often shows up as small shifts, not one big event. Feeling sad, relieved and happy about the same change is normal. One person’s change can quietly shift everyone else’s role. Uncertainty about belonging can feel like a threat to your nervous system. Valuing a tradition is not the same as requiring it to stay the same. New routines give your nervous system something steady to settle into. Do you find yourself stepping in to fix things for the people you love, even when they could handle it themselves? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson looks at how rescuing shows up in real life. She walks through five areas where it happens most: parenting, marriage, co-parenting after divorce, leadership at work, and helping professions. You'll learn how to tell the difference between support that builds capacity and support that quietly takes it away, and how to find the smallest amount of help that still lets someone own their experience. We'll explore: Support should match a child's capacity, not just their age. Over-functioning in marriage builds slowly, one small handoff at a time. Rescuing kids after divorce can keep them stuck in the victim role. Great leaders build people one decision at a time. Helpers must separate a client's progress from their own sense of worth. Ask first so you know which kind of help the moment needs. Key Takeaways Rescuing usually looks like small, everyday handoffs, not big dramatic moves. Scaffolding meets a real gap. Enabling continues after the gap has closed. Before stepping in, notice whose nervous system you're trying to settle. Ask yourself: "Is this mine to carry, or theirs to carry with me beside them?" Do you ever step in to fix things for the people you love before they even ask? What if that help is quietly taking away the very moments they need to grow? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson explores the difference between helping someone and taking over for them. Drawing on her years as a speech-language pathologist in brain injury rehab and her own experience in a blended family, Leah unpacks why we rescue, from easing our own discomfort to needing to feel useful, and why the real question is never about effort but about capacity. You'll learn how to tell rescuing apart from scaffolding, why your urge to jump in is often about settling your own nervous system, and simple language shifts that hand ownership back while keeping you connected. Key takeaways: Rescuing often relieves our discomfort more than theirs. Needing to be needed is often tied to our sense of worth. Scaffolding builds capacity. Rescuing replaces it. Support looks different for every person and every moment. Tolerating someone else's struggle is a nervous system skill. Small language shifts can keep you connected without taking over. Ask what the smallest amount of help is that still lets them own it. Have you ever finally let yourself rest and felt anxious instead of relaxed? Or been in a relationship that was genuinely good and still found yourself waiting for something to go wrong? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson explains why safety itself can feel unsafe. Building on last week's conversation about backdraft, Leah shows how the same pattern spreads far beyond self-compassion into rest, love, praise, success, and being truly seen. Your nervous system isn't measuring whether you're safe right now. It's running a prediction built from everything it learned before, and that prediction hasn't caught up to your life today. Leah shares her own story of almost walking away from her husband because he seemed too nice to be real, and why 19 years later she still catches herself waiting for the other shoe to drop. She also explains how to tell the difference between an old pattern and a real warning sign, why "just sit with it" can make things worse, and how to support someone who pulls away from your care. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Your nervous system predicts safety based on history, not present facts. Good things like rest, love, and praise can trigger bracing instead of relief. Old predictions feel vague and constant. Real signals point to something specific. Slowing down can intensify distress before it settles. A technique like a hand on the heart is a cue your body still has to interpret. Safety is built through small, repeated evidence, not a single moment of convincing. With someone who pulls away, steady presence works better than pushing harder. Have you ever tried to be kinder to yourself, and ended up feeling worse instead of better? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson unpacks "backdraft", a term borrowed from firefighting that explains why self-compassion can sometimes trigger anxiety, grief, or resistance instead of relief. She breaks down why this happens, what it means about your nervous system's old protective patterns, and how to practice kindness in a way your body can actually receive. Key Takeaways: Backdraft happens when kindness "opens the door" on feelings your body had been managing all along, it doesn't create the distress, it reveals it. Your nervous system checks new kindness against past experience, if warmth once came with conditions, it learns to treat kindness as unsafe. Self-criticism often isn't just a bad habit, it can function as protection, control, or a shield against rejection. Resistance to compassion isn't malfunction, it's old information showing up in a new moment. The fix isn't more compassion, all at once, it's smaller, slower doses you can actually hold. Naming backdraft when it happens ("ah, this is backdraft") interrupts the spiral of self-blame. What if some of what you call your personality actually started as a way to stay safe, belong, or avoid conflict? In this special 300th episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson walks through seven identities many midlife women have quietly carried for decades, the strong one, the responsible one, the peacekeeper, the productive one, the one who doesn't need anything, the good girl, and the one everyone needs. These roles once protected you, but by midlife they can start costing more than they give. Leah explores how to loosen their grip without losing the strengths underneath. Key Takeaways Many "personality traits" are actually nervous system strategies that once kept you safe. Identities like "the strong one" or "the responsible one" often outlive their usefulness by midlife. Keeping the peace externally can quietly cost you pieces of yourself internally. Your worth isn't measured by productivity, usefulness, or how much you can carry alone. Nervous system flexibility means having more than one response available, not becoming a different person. Retiring an identity doesn't mean erasing it, it means letting it step back so other parts of you can lead. Have you ever caught yourself doodling in a meeting and felt a little embarrassed about it, like your brain was checking out? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson makes the case for doodling as a legitimate nervous system tool, not a distraction, but a body-based practice backed by real science. She breaks down the "10 Ps" of doodling, showing how something as simple as a pen moving across paper can lower cortisol, boost dopamine, and shift your body from stress back into safety. You'll learn why your nervous system needs bottom-up, non-verbal tools alongside talk-based healing, and how doodling builds focus, emotional release, presence, and playfulness without requiring any artistic skill at all. Doodling is a body-based practice that brings you into the present moment and regulates your nervous system in real time. It activates cognitive centers that support memory, focus, and comprehension, even when it looks like "checking out." Doodling offers a wordless outlet for emotion, letting stuck feelings move through the body instead of staying trapped. Regulation is a skill, not a trait, consistent doodling reinforces neural pathways tied to calm and clarity. Play and imperfection in doodling help release perfectionism and chronic hypervigilance. Doodling can act as a bridge between the emotional brain and the thinking brain after a stress response. Have you ever set a new goal on Monday, new notebook, new routine, new version of you, only to find yourself back in old patterns three weeks later? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson explores why lasting change isn't a discipline problem, it's an identity problem. Your nervous system runs on decades of evidence about who you are, and it uses that evidence to predict what you'll do next. When you try to act differently, you're not just changing behavior, you're going against a self-description your brain has quietly filed as fact. Leah walks through seven ways your identity shapes your behavior and shares what actually helps your nervous system update the story it's telling about you. You'll learn why unfamiliar isn't the same as unsafe, why some of your most stubborn traits started as brilliant protective strategies, and why small repeated evidence changes you more reliably than any big reinvention. We'll explore: Your brain predicts your behavior from your past — not from your intentions. Repeated behaviors quietly turn into identity statements about who you are. Unfamiliar isn't the same as unsafe — discomfort often just means new. Traits like people-pleasing and perfectionism were once smart protective strategies. Your brain notices the evidence that confirms what it already believes about you. Small, repeated actions build identity more reliably than one big reinvention. You don't have to feel like the new version of yourself before you start practicing it. Do you ever feel like the more people rely on you, the less anyone actually sees you? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson unpacks the subtle but powerful difference between being needed and being valued — and why this distinction becomes especially loud in midlife. When your identity has been built around usefulness, stepping back can leave you feeling unmoored instead of relieved. Leah explores why this happens at the nervous system level, how usefulness gets encoded as a survival strategy, and what it takes to shift from reflexive helping to genuine, chosen connection. You'll learn why appreciation isn't the same as being valued, how your nervous system tags usefulness as the reliable path to safety, and small, practical ways to interrupt the automatic drive to be needed so your relationships can rest on who you are — not just what you do. We'll explore: Being needed and being valued can feel identical from the inside but are very different. Midlife often exposes an identity that was quietly built around usefulness. Your nervous system encodes usefulness as a procedural strategy for safety and connection. Appreciation rewards output, while being valued honors your presence. Small, quiet interruptions of automatic helping create new nervous system patterns over time. Reciprocal relationships allow your needs to exist alongside everyone else's. What if the life you keep postponing is the one you were actually meant to be living? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson shares the simple question she asks herself before every big decision, will I regret this when I'm 80? — and how it led her and her husband Rob to say yes to a four-month trip through Europe this year. She revisits the piece of advice her aunt gave her nearly 30 years ago that changed the entire course of her career, and the reason that advice hit even harder after her aunt's life was cut short at 47. Drawing on Bronnie Ware's book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, Leah unpacks why so many of us keep waiting for the "right time" that never actually arrives, and what's really happening in the nervous system when we choose familiar over uncertain. You'll learn why "ready" is not a permission slip you receive but a capacity your nervous system builds through action, how to tell the difference between waiting for something real and quietly avoiding change, and one filter question you can start using this week to cut through second-guessing on decisions big and small. We'll explore: The one question that can shift how you make every meaningful decision. Why your nervous system often chooses familiar over what you actually want. How the five most common end-of-life regrets show up in everyday choices. Why "ready" is a feeling you build through action, not one you wait for. How to spot the difference between real timing and quiet avoidance. One small step you can take this week to stop postponing your own life. What if your inner critic isn’t just a thought—but a nervous system response? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah explores why self-criticism shows up in both the mind and body, and why trying to shame yourself into change often creates even more threat. You’ll learn how to recognize your “mean girls,” create distance from the inner critic, regulate before responding, and use self-compassion without losing accountability. Do you have a voice in your head that never seems to stop judging you? The one that tells you you're behind, too much, not enough, or that people are only being polite when they're kind to you? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson revisits the inner critic, what she calls the "mean girls," through a nervous system lens. Years ago she talked about this voice as a thinking problem, something you argue back with in your head. Today she brings the body into the conversation. Your inner critic is not only what you think about yourself, it is what happens in your chest, your jaw, and your stomach the moment that thought shows up. Once you see it that way, you have far more options for working with it than trying to win an argument with your own mind. Leah walks through why self-criticism lands in the body so fast, what the research says about naming the voice, and why regulating your nervous system has to come before you try to reason with anything. You will also learn why self-compassion turns out to be more motivating than fear, and what to do if kindness toward yourself feels foreign or fake at first. We'll explore: The inner critic is a nervous system event, not just a thought pattern. Naming the voice creates measurable distance between you and the thought. Interoception reveals where the mean girls actually live in your body. The safety sequence regulates the body before you try to respond. Self-compassion motivates more sustainably than harshness or fear. Kindness can feel foreign at first, and a smaller bridge helps it land. Have you ever walked into a room and felt your body relax—or tense up—before anything even happened? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah explores what safety really means for the nervous system. She explains why safety is not a series of stages, how predictability and choice shape your body’s response, and why another person can support your regulation without being responsible for it. You’ll also learn why healthy relationships are not free from conflict, why repair builds trust, and how psychological, spiritual, and cultural safety influence the way we connect with others. Key Takeaways Safety is something your nervous system continually evaluates. Predictability, privacy, and choice help the body feel safe. Co-regulation matters, but no one can create safety for you. Relational safety comes from repair, not avoiding conflict. People feel safer when they can speak honestly without punishment. Safety must be defined by the person experiencing it. Have you ever wondered why two people with nearly identical brain scans can live completely different lives? One stays sharp and independent, while the other struggles to hold a conversation. In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson revisits cognitive reserve with an updated look at the newer research. Drawing on over twenty-seven years as a speech-language pathologist, Leah explains why cognitive reserve isn't about being smart or a fixed trait. It's built across your entire lifetime through education, complex work, movement, connection, sleep, and how well you protect your hearing and vision. We'll explore: Cognitive reserve buys time and flexibility, not invincibility. The difference between neuroplasticity, brain maintenance, and cognitive reserve. Why lifelong learning matters more than any diploma. Hearing and vision as brain health issues. Active engagement vs. passive exposure. Sleep, movement, and connection as foundations. How nervous system regulation makes reserve building possible. What if your nervous system tools are helping you calm down, but not actually changing what you can handle? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah breaks down the difference between regulating in the moment and building long-term nervous system capacity. Using relatable examples from relationships, parenting, boundaries, business, grief, rest, and chronic pain, she explains why calming down is only part of the work. Real resilience is being able to stay present, connected, and able to choose, even when discomfort is still there. You’ll also learn five signs your capacity is growing, why insight alone doesn’t always change your body’s response, and how small, supported experiences can help create new patterns over time. We’ll explore: Regulation tools help you manage the moment, while capacity changes what your nervous system can handle over time. Building capacity means staying present, connected, and able to choose, even when discomfort is still there. Growth often looks like noticing reactions earlier, tolerating manageable discomfort, and recovering more quickly after stress. Understanding a pattern intellectually is not always enough; the nervous system learns through safe, repeated experiences. Not every reaction comes from past trauma, current stress, sleep, health, hormones, relationships, and environment also matter. What if discomfort isn’t always a sign that something is wrong? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson breaks down the three types of discomfort: protective, adaptive, and expansive. You’ll learn how to tell whether your nervous system is warning you about a crossed boundary, helping you move through something difficult, or reacting to the unfamiliarity of growth. Because discomfort doesn’t always mean “stop.” Sometimes it means protect yourself, ask for support, or take one small step forward. We’ll explore: Discomfort does not always mean something is wrong or that you should stop. Protective discomfort signals a boundary, need, or sense of safety may be at risk. Adaptive discomfort comes from moving through something hard that cannot simply be fixed or avoided. Expansive discomfort appears when you step into something new, unfamiliar, or growth-oriented. Before reacting, ask whether you need to protect yourself, seek support, or take one small step forward. Have you ever wondered why you can’t handle what you used to? The same responsibilities, conversations, busy days, and emotional demands that once felt manageable may now leave you feeling reactive, exhausted, or overwhelmed. And when that happens, it’s easy to assume something is wrong with you. In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah explores a more compassionate way to understand what’s really happening. Instead of asking, “Why can’t I handle this anymore?” she invites you to ask, “How much can my nervous system actually take on right now?” You’ll learn why resilience isn’t about eliminating stress or staying calm all the time, but about understanding your threshold, recognizing your early warning signs, and protecting the recovery that allows your system to come back stronger. We’ll explore: The difference between stress that builds capacity and stress that simply piles up. Why your nervous system threshold changes with sleep, hormones, grief, health, and life demands. How reactivity, recovery time, and pileup can help you understand your current capacity. Why midlife can shift what your body is able to carry. How to recognize your personal “yellow lights” before you hit burnout. Why recovery needs to be planned, not left to chance. How to use a simple nervous system “budget check” to decide whether to proceed, modify, or postpone. Have you read the books, taken the courses, gone to therapy, and done all the "right" work, yet still find yourself stuck in the same patterns and quietly wondering if maybe it's just you? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson reveals the layer that so many healing and mindset approaches leave out: the nervous system. Drawing on her 27 years as a speech-language pathologist and her evidence-based approach to coaching, Leah explains why insight alone rarely creates lasting change. When your nervous system is stuck in a protective state, your thinking brain goes partly offline, and even the best tools and reframes cannot fully land. The problem was never you or your effort. It was a missing piece. You'll learn why your nervous system acts like a lens that shapes everything you perceive and how you show up, why over-functioning quietly turns into over-adaptation, and how to start noticing your own state before your next hard conversation. Leah also shares the difference between being over-adapted and being well, plus simple, compassionate ways to begin working with this layer in yourself and the people around you. We'll explore: The nervous system is the foundation that shapes access to every other tool you have. Mindset work is state-dependent and only lands when your system feels safe. Your nervous system state acts like a lens that shapes how you perceive everything. Over-functioning, over time, becomes over-adaptation in the body. Being over-adapted is not the same as being well. Real change starts in the nervous system before it shows up in your life. Do you ever reach the end of the day feeling completely drained, with nothing left for the people and things that matter most? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson reframes depletion as a capacity problem, not a discipline or time management problem. Building on part one, she looks at Covey's important and urgent matrix and the four Ds, not as productivity hacks but as nervous system tools. You'll learn why urgency keeps your body in a constant threat response, why the important but not urgent quadrant is where you actually regulate, and how to match the right tool to what's happening in your body. We'll explore: Depletion is a capacity problem, not a time management problem. Urgency triggers a threat response and quietly burns your energy. The important but not urgent quadrant is where your nervous system regulates. The four Ds work as regulation tools, not just decision making shortcuts. Delegation can feel unsafe because it is a nervous system pattern. Every framework builds in a pause so your next move is a choice, not a reaction. Do you ever feel like you have a thousand things to do, but somehow you get nothing done, not because you're lazy or disorganized, but because your body simply won't move forward? In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson makes the case that overwhelm isn't a time management problem. It's an energy problem, and underneath that, it's a nervous system problem. Drawing on twenty-seven years as a speech-language pathologist working with clients who had traumatic brain injuries, Leah shares the clinical tools she once used in rehabilitation and explains why they're surprisingly relevant for all of us, especially in midlife when our capacity to absorb demands begins to shift. You'll learn the four Ps of energy conservation (plan, prioritize, pace, and position) along with the Pacing Points Program, a daily energy budget that helps prevent the crash before your day is done. Leah connects each of these strategies back to your nervous system states, showing why pushing through overwhelm only makes it harder to find your way back to safety and regulation. This is part one of a two-part conversation, so consider it your invitation to start noticing your real energy patterns this week. We'll explore: Overwhelm is a nervous system signal, not a scheduling failure. The four Ps of energy conservation: plan, prioritize, pace, and position. Why pacing and rest breaks matter, even when you don't think you need them. How the Pacing Points Program works like a daily energy budget. The three nervous system states: Team Resilient, Team Hyper, and Team Hypo. Why midlife changes your capacity, and what your body is really asking for.
