After an almost two-year hiatus (can’t quite remember why now), Amblin returns with the first film released after we started this podcast: Miguel Sapochnik’s 2021 streaming title FINCH. It was a strange decision for this production house to acquire the character rights to the Slough-based sales rep played by Ralph Ineson in ‘The Office’, but– Oh, hang on, wrong Finch. This one is played by Tom Hanks and is attempting to navigate the post-apocalyptic US so that his robot pal Jeff (Caleb Landry-Jones) can look after his dog Goodyear (Seamus) when he’s gone. Together we talk about the welcome note of hope this movie brings to the dystopian sci-fi genre, the wonderful visual effects work involved and the AppleTV+ of it all. It’s been a more prolific decade for Amblin than the previous one, but does that translate into quality? Throughout 18 films – including seven Spielbergs, five sequels, three mo-cap showcases, two Josh Gad dog spirit rotations and one instance of digital fur technology – the production house has reached into its past while also trying to figure out what the future looks like, to mixed results. But there were still plenty of Good Boys, Bit Players and all-round Surprises to choose from as we looked back over the 2010s and separated the Abe Lincolns from the Munkustraps. Now we all know that clocks reside either on walls or beside them. It’s a simple matter of fact. But what if, this movie supposes, there was a house with a clock in its walls? A radical notion, to be sure, and one that was first broached in 1973 by author John Bellairs and again in 2018 when director Eli Roth adapted his novel into the film we all know as THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS. Joining us to find the source of the infernal ticking is returning guest Jack Buckley, who has not only read the Bellairs original but has been waiting to wax lyrical about this since the clock-cogs first started turning. As the poster for a certain big lizard movie from 1998 said, size matters. We mark our return – which in turn marks our five year anniversary, if you can believe that – by covering two films that were added retroactively to Wikipedia’s Amblin filmography list (which, of course, is our gospel): the cursed 1983 production of TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE and the other ‘comet hurtling towards earth’ picture from 1998, DEEP IMPACT. It’s a lot to bite off in one episode, so we set ourselves a time limit for each discussion to make sure we don’t disappear too far down the rabbit holes. Four score and seven years ago (or thereabouts), our Papa Spielberg brought forth on this filmography a new biopic, conceived in collaboration with Tony Kushner, and dedicated to the proposition that Daniel Day-Lewis was the best man to embody Honest Abe in his pledge to ratify the idea that ‘all men are created equal’. Now we are engaged in a discussion of the result, 2012’s LINCOLN, testing whether that biopic, or any biopic so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that discussion with friend and fellow Warwick film grad James Warren, to explore this work within the pantheon of ‘great films’, the degree of ambivalence with which it views the democratic process and the astonishing array of character actors with great faces. It is here that we highly resolve that this film was not made in vain, and that filmmaking by the Spielberg, with his collaborators, for the Ramblin listeners, shall not perish from our memory. The Men in Black are back… in time!? It’s time for some Amblin time-travel hijinks not involving a DeLorean as we check back in with the protectors of Earth agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) as the very fabric of reality is threatened when an evil alien named Boris the Animal (Jermaine Clement) - actually it’s just Boris - rewrites history, forcing J to travel back to 1969 and team up with K’s younger self (an eerily perfect Josh Brolin).
