A triathlon magazine type show, looking at how we coach triathlon, interviewing triathletes to explore their racing and training, as well as keeping abreast of the latest triathlon news, done in our straight talking, no jargon style, with over 15 years of coaching experience between us. We have seen all the trends, fads and new fangled gadgets, and have used nearly all of them. We’ve come to realise that triathlon is really simple; It’s a swim, followed by a bike, followed by a run and together that is triathlon. Over the course of our episodes, we will break down the mysteries of triathlon training and show you how simple and flexible it can be, so that it really does become part of your lifestyle and not just a hobby. Each episode will be between 30-40 minutes long, and we are going to break them down in to seasons, with each season focusing on a particular aspect of triathlon. You’ll get helpful and easy to understand advice, that you can take away and implement into your own training. We will be releasing our episodes regularly, and these will be available to download, and to subscribed to, for free from your usual podcast location. We are really excited about this podcast and can’t wait for you to listen and send us your questions. See you soon. We’re back! After a bit of a break, Coach Jacqui and Coach Oliver are back in the studio for another episode of Triathlonology. We catch up on everything that’s been happening at Animis Racing — our record-breaking Crowle Triathlon, training in Portugal, T100 London, some interesting race-day dramas, the joys of trying to train through a British summer and, of course, what’s coming next. We also talk about Oliver’s rather unexpected open-water panic attack, a disastrous encounter at the York 10K, why phones probably shouldn’t be used during races, and our plans for the Vilamoura 70.3. Plus, we chat about our upcoming Crowle Triathlon, the Vermuyden 5 & 10K at 7 Lakes Country Park, our Portugal training holidays and what’s happening with Animis Racing over the next few months. It’s honest, occasionally controversial, usually a bit daft — and exactly what you’d expect from a mum and son who are rather obsessed with triathlon. If you enjoy it, give us a like, subscribe and tell us in the comments what you’d like us to talk about next. Make Triathlon Reyt Good Again. Mentioned in this episode: Online Coaching
The latest episode of the Triathonology podcast, hosted by Coach Oliver and Coach Jacqui, discusses significant changes in the triathlon world, including the acquisition of Challenge by T100, which will now own all non-Ironman triathlons starting next year. The hosts explore the implications of this acquisition, such as potential rebranding of events and the introduction of new race formats like T50 and T100]. They also touch on the challenges of promoting a free triathlon training program, which has yet to attract participants despite being advertised on social media. Additionally, the podcast covers Alex Yee's future plans in marathon running and his financial motivations for returning to triathlon. The episode covers the physical demands of training at a high level, where daily aches and fatigue are normal experiences. The coaches emphasize an important coaching principle: world-class coaches don't need to be former elite athletes themselves, contrary to common amateur assumptions. They cite examples of successful professional coaches who never competed at elite levels. The coaches recount their recent trip to Portugal for training camp and social media content creation. They describe Portugal's severe winter weather, noting their travel experience included a delayed flight but successful arrival. The Portugal visit included filming new training routes and discovering improved locations for brick sessions. The coaches discuss their enjoyment of coaching new athletes and their learn-to-swim program funded by SSE Thermal, which has taught approximately 1,000 people to swim easily since 2016. They mention recent investments in anti-wash lane ropes for their swimming program, pending storage resolution through local council support. Future plans include preliminary discussions with Seven Lakes about hosting 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races, with hopes for a half-Ironman event in the same venue next year. The coaches are focused on making triathlon affordable again by reducing race prices to 2012-2013 levels through available funding. Additionally, Jacqui has scheduled hand surgery for March 4th after her initial January operation was postponed due to unexpected demand for orthopedic procedures. In this episode, Jacqui and Oliver discuss how proper coaching gets you fitter faster and enjoying the journey. Key Takeaways: Mistake 1: Rushing into high-intensity training too soon. After a winter of base training, it's tempting to jump into high-intensity workouts right away as the weather improves. However, this can lead to injury and burnout. Instead, gradually increase the intensity and volume of your workouts over time. Mistake 2: Ignoring recovery. Recovery is an essential part of the training process, especially during the transition from winter to spring. Make sure to schedule regular rest days and active recovery sessions to allow your body to recover and adapt to the increased training load. Mistake 3: Neglecting strength training. Strength training is an important component of triathlon training, but it's often overlooked. Incorporating strength training into your routine can help improve your performance and reduce your risk of injury. Mistake 4: Overtraining. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of spring training and push yourself too hard. However, overtraining can lead to fatigue, decreased performance, and injuries. Listen to your body and take rest days when you need them. Mistake 5: Forgetting to enjoy the process. Triathlon training should be enjoyable, not a chore. Make sure to take some time to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and the progress you're making. In this episode, Jacqui and Oliver discuss why the boring stuff is the most important stuff. Training for a triathlon is not always exciting or glamorous. Repeating boring workouts is essential for improving as a triathlete. Social media often portrays triathlon training as more thrilling than it is. Don't be discouraged if most of your training sessions are not particularly enjoyable. All training sessions, even the boring ones, contribute to your progress.
