Podcast hosted by artist Loren Lewis Cole exploring themes around the vital necessity of artistic practice throughout the stages of our lives. From the conversation on depression and the 'meaning crisis', to our desire to dance a dance that only we can dance, the importance of creativity, curiosity and play are more important than they've been for some time. As we approach an age of increasing technological enmeshment and disembodied information hoarding, craft and the dexterous skillsets allow us to glimpse an ancient kinaesthetic intelligence that can completely revitalise our lives. How can we go from a performative mode of engagement with the world to a participatory one? Living from the inside out, sharing what we've come here to share. Art is medicine. We create art to heal, we heal to create Art. @lorenlewiscolejewellery www.lorenlewiscole.com Gorgeous cover image by @ raynjermain , Ben Rayner

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Darling ones, I'm working on a very potent live container starting in October. Sign up here of you'd like to be kept in the know and how to join. https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/art-is-medicine-family/?utm_source=podcast Dark here doesn't mean anything unnatural, bad or undesirable. It simply means that matter is 0.00000001 % of what is here. The rest is space. How do we perceive the sparks of light, then catch them? The nudges, the ideas, the whispers from places we cannot touch? My entire life changed when I remembered I'm an artist, and I source my vitality through being a servant to beauty. That is all. Yet it took me a lot of overcoming the idea that I was being indulgent and selfish to take the innocence of my imagination seriously. Yet it's still easy to miss the glowing orbs. Here's a poetic and invitational episode for you. Take notes, and take your golden orbs seriously. Only you can see them at first.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the Art is Medicine Challenge - August 1-31st - Undomesticate your Creativity and give your emotion somewhere to go, it's £33 and the link is below ❤️🔥 https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/art-is-medicine-challenge/ I've been feeling a real sense of soul sickness recently, tears, overwhelm, a longing to return to my deepest knowing and to find myself back in a sense of awe and mystery. I've been yearning for surrender into the unknown, to be held by forces outside of my mind, I've been longing for the serenity and fire of artistic embodiment. This isn't about results, about competence, skill or anything externally validated, this is about returning to our deepest intelligence in a world that wants us so disembodied and distracted. Art is medicine, Beauty is MEDICINE. A felt sense of inner resource and beauty, not an externally validated idea of externalised and normalised beauty that ingrain western beauty standards. This beauty is the deepest truth of our authenticity and the courage to embody everything the body can feel without seeing some emotional experiences as good and some as bad. that is courage, that is beauty, and our Art can take it all, and asks for more. I have been feeling soul sick, I needed a space to deeply feel everything. Then, the last week, I created space to return home. I set up some materials in a low key way and I went into the most amazing portal of remembering. Art is medicine. There's no shame in forgetting, it simply makes the remembrance sweeter. Join me and a community of deep feeling women for the month of August, to create space to re-centre our fire and creativity, giving feelings somewhere to go, to express, to be alchemised into pleasure and wisdom. This is without a doubt the place I've yearned for my entire life and I cannot wait to see what unfolds here. Please share this episode and challenge with anyone who would benefit from this medicine. With love, Loren
I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the LLC Jewellery Family https://relaxed-concha-2004a0.netlify.app/ Come say hi on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lorenlewiscolejewellery/?hl=en Competence, one of the most deeply fulfilling experiences a person can have. But how do we develop genuine competence, and how can we sustain our hearts on its nectar? Many people are well paid and competent for things they don't actually care about. Competence is its own reward, and forms the platform to spring into excellence, once that language has become familiar enough not to have to think, it's become muscle memory. I cancelled a trip to Malta 36 hours before flying out — a women's wrestling camp I'd paid for and was excited about — because some deeper part of me knew I needed a staycation instead. That choice opened up a few days of real flow, and in that space I noticed three experiences that all shared the same quality: real competence, where you can take the material — or the person, or your own body — wherever you want to go. First, I finally sat down and carved a tiny gold goat in wax, something I'd been afraid to start because it mattered so much to me. After two hours in flow, I got the wax to say exactly what I meant, and it undid me a bit — that's what competence built from years of failing in this craft feels like. Second, a jiu-jitsu sparring class two years into training, where for the first time it felt less like survival and more like a conversation — I could read an attack, turn it into a defense, and have it flip back into an attack, over and over, with total flow. Third, a conversation with a client in London that went everywhere — astrology, craniosacral therapy, anthroposophy, jiu-jitsu — and neither of us dropped the thread. We led each other in turns, and it felt like travelling. All three reminded me that competence isn't about avoiding mistakes — it's what's left after you've made enough of them that you can finally lead, or be led, without losing your footing. That's the whole idea behind the episode title: the feeling of the ground moving with your feet. How to find your own zone of competence- Look for an area you're already skilled in and ask how you could go deeper, rather than spreading thin across everything you're not yet good at. Competence requires real interest — you can't force your way into excellence in something you don't care about. Competence is the feeling of the ground moving with your feet — full presence, in the body, reading the room of your materials (paint, weather, a face, a partner's tension) and being met there. Find the practice you're already rooted in, and let that be where you access flow.
I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the LLC Jewellery Family https://relaxed-concha-2004a0.netlify.app/ Come say hi on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lorenlewiscolejewellery/?hl=en Your obsessions are not arbitrary. They're not an accident. You've been given things that only you can be interested in. Take them seriously — because only you can say what you can say in the unique way you say it with your body, senses, artistic whimsy and play ❤️ In this episode, we explore why obsession isn't something to fear or suppress — it's a devotional energy and one of the most direct routes to creative fulfilment and self-actualisation. We trace the arc from interest → passion → obsession , and why interest alone isn't enough: when life circumstances intensify, casual interest fades, but obsession endures. True obsession feels like "the hands of the universe knocking on every cell of your body" — it takes you beyond discipline into a place where rest, effort, and creativity all find their natural rhythm. The episode also explores the premenstrual portal as a powerful window for creative discernment — a time of heightened clarity, uncompromising standards, and direct access to what's truly alive in your work. Rather than suppressing this energy, we're invited to lean into it. Other themes explored: Why "playing it cool" is the death of creative work — and why emotional responsiveness is a feature, not a flaw The two options when you're stuck doing something you're not obsessed with: let it go with courage, or find a way to increase your obsession How to recognise your obsessions — the things you'd read about anywhere, just for pleasure, even if they're not fashionable or profitable Why unexpressed obsession can invert into depression The difference between fear-based perfectionism and the kind of 110% that comes from knowing you have more in you How your obsession is what people are actually connecting to when they're drawn to your work — not your credentials or how long you've been doing it Living from the inside out: when you lose your way, obsession is the thread that leads you back .
I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the LLC Jewellery Family https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/jointhetribe/ Come say hi on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lorenlewiscolejewellery/?hl=en "Being Quenched by the Aesthetic Moment" I open this episode by sharing a voice note I received from a listener — a thank you that genuinely moved me — and I use it to explore why art matters: not for mass adoption, but for its ability to create direct, wordless connection between human beings. Art as truth. Art as the thing that drops everything else. The central theme is being quenched by the aesthetic moment — that state of total absorption in creative work where time shifts, attention becomes prayer (I cite Simone Weil), and nothing else exists. I talk about the difference between chasing outcomes and surrendering to the aesthetic experience itself, and why the deepest creative work only comes when we stop trying to control the result. I share a reel by Boyd Bishonga , a painter and metal sculptor from Africa, whose studio footage moved me — particularly his trust in the self-evident nature of his work, his refusal to explain it, and his understanding that art comes from a pre-verbal, non-rational place. I talk about how over-rationalising creative work can actually damage it. I speak honestly about depression — not as something to be ashamed of, but as an inflammation marker, a signal that something essential is going unmet. For me, that thing has always been creating. I trace this through my family history of mental health struggles, my own near-edges, and the decade I spent trying to find peace through spiritual practice before realising my art was always the answer. I talk about my son at jujitsu — exhausted after double classes and a full school day, finding something extra when asked to be accountable — as a metaphor for growth feeling uncomfortable. Discomfort at the edge isn't a trauma response. It's what growth feels like. On creative discipline : you don't need to be full-time. It can be the kitchen table when the kids are asleep. What matters is making the pilgrimage to that sacred space regularly, protecting it, not explaining it to people riddled with fear and logic, and understanding that inspiration follows movement — not the other way around. I talk about living at the threshold between the seen and unseen as the essence of being an artist, and how the twilight language of mystics and the language of artists are the same thing. I reference Polly Wales as an example of what happens when you trust an innovation that has no precedent — years of risk, financial pain, and courage that eventually becomes the thing everyone else copies. I close with this: pursuing your art is not selfish. It is regenerative medicine — for you and for everyone who comes into contact with you. Your desire to create is the invisible world showing you where the medicine of your life is. "Our job is to stay in the creative engine, in the fire of our lives, forging talismans day by day."

Deeply coming into the body is where healing happens and is integrated. I love you. Keep going, courageous human. You are not broken, and you cannot get things wrong when you give your all, even when you're trembling and unsure, be brave. How do we know when we're going it our all? We're completely absorbed and feel raw and unsure, but our hearts are open and we so deeply care. Loren xxx
I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Join the LLC Jewellery Family https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/jointhetribe/ Come say hi on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lorenlewiscolejewellery/?hl=en If you are exhausted, you are safe to feel exhausted, and you do not need a retreat or a holiday to recover, you need to remember your Art. We heal when we let ourselves completely feel. It’s only when I let my whole body genuinely feel the fragility and exhaustion, that the freeze can move, and all that armour energy can be liberated again into generosity, creativity and inspiration. Yesterday I was so exhausted. My entire spirit was fatigued. Despite walking, eating well, exercising and getting lots done, my vitality was on the floor. I’d been running on action and interaction for over a month, getting so much done, with quiet time but no time for poetry, open ended creative space that’s quiet enough for me to hear my heart again. I don’t know what ‘most people’ need. But I know what I need, and what so many sensitive, intuitive artistic people need. We need our art, we need the medicine of diving into the ocean of imagination, sensuality and the undefined. Possibility that’s unknown, exciting, beautiful. What’s always fascinated me is how energy moves when I recover from overextended interaction. What took a month to get out of balance and overexerted can be genuinely reinvigorated in a few hours. Sometimes we need to feel really unwell to remember the medicine we need. Vitality slowly creeps away until we feel unrecognisable to ourselves, energetically impotent. Art heals this, and if your an artist you’ll know this medicine. Restoring sumptuous energy throughout the entire system. The tangible body and the intangible vibe we emit. We’re in a poetically illiterate over culture, modernity is beige and predictable, the poet is starving, and so we must know how to feed ourselves. Sometimes we eat a bit each day, other times we forget to eat for so long. Art is medicine. Maybe it’s a song you listen to with your entire body on the drive home, feeling it fully for the first time. Maybe it’s truly dancing with closed eyes so you can feel your body from the inside out. A cry, some connection, the generosity of beauty. Our ancient bodies are primed for this medicine which is why reconnection can happen so easily if we know how to treat ourselves. When we trust our deepest ability to reinvigorate dehydrated psychic soil, we don’t fear feeling disconnected. If you know you can eat, you don’t fear hunger. As Artists, knowing how to reinvigorate our creative river means we always have the tools to heal. Art is the free movement of healing energy in the body.
I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Every time I connect back to the courage of my heart, life rewards me. My energy grows, my inspiration deepens and my world gets bigger, bigger, bigger. Wildly. The bigger it gets, somehow the smaller it gets. It gets big then the edges start to touch each other again. You fly somewhere you've never been before and meet kindred spirits that feel like family, because you're feeling so yourself that you find people wherever you go. I'm really interested in what makes us feel in our flow, inspired, connected, wanting to create, and what stops us from experiencing that. What's the bridge, how does the thing function? Being in flow, experiencing synchronicities, inspiration and the collaboration of others in the direction of our collective dreams, most people might say they want that, but why do sometimes we feel so disconnected to that? How do we stay potent? That's always what I'm interested in, always. Courage, potency, vision, how do we stay in that focused, trusting zone that scares us but inspires us more?? I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast The etymology of 'economy' comes from the ancient greek 'oikos' which is the word for home. Economy is the sharing of gifts from the home. Let's reclaim the movement of trade as an exchange of gifts forged in the home, in small workshops, in the gifts of people's efforts. There's a radiant economy alive at all times. The everyday gifts of women. In a season of such tenderness and expansion, deepening roots into the fertile soil, I feel so in tune with the gifts of women, so supported by people's unique contributions. Some tired musings on this fragrantly alive economy... let's intentionally strengthen it day in day out with our verbal praise. The more on our path we are, the more we can see others, clearly, in their radiance. This is the balm for the wounds of competition. Sit back and receive the gifts of women, then praise. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Fear and doubt tend to make our experience and world smaller. We take less risks and play things safe and reasonable. There's no way we can live a life fully expressed without falling on our faces, feeling consumed with doubt and fear, and wondering if we should just quit. If we're playing it safe artistically or in any other area of life, we won't feel doubt. Doubt is going to come, and what matters is who we are and how we work with it WHEN it comes. Because it will baby, and instead of running from it, we can learn to dive into the ego death of a portal that is doubt, and instead of crumbling, we can find presence there, find aliveness there, find the spirit to continue there. What we run from has power over us. What we face courageously we internalise the power of. Greatness is forged in the fire of emotional intensity, what I often see is the desire to make what could be acute emotional experiences more diluted and chronic. chronic fear can actually ruin our lives, but acute fear fully embodied just makes us deeper, stronger and more alive. We all feel good when we feel confident, but what really makes us, where we earn our stripes is how we deal with the times we're tired and doubt ridden, fearful and uninspired. We don't rise to the level of our confidence, we grow our confidence by our ability to inhabit and metabolise doubt, fully alive, through the portal of uncertainty, into a new awareness and more powerful ground. Doubt and fear are inescapable on a true path of heart, it means you're not playing it safe, welcome to the human race my love. Keep going. There is no security in life, in our work, in our futures, only the courage we have to keep going no matter the circumstances, to choose to celebrate being here in an imperfect circumstance, only full aliveness is here, no security. So keep going, keep working, keep bringing your gifts forward. With love, Loren Go to the Limits of Your Longing- Rilke . God speaks to each of us as he makes us, then walks with us silently out of the night. These are the words we dimly hear: You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me. Flare up like a flame and make big shadows I can move in. Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. Don’t let yourself lose me. Nearby is the country they call life. You will know it by its seriousness. Give me your hand. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast 'To love anything, at any cost, is a bargain.' Wendell Berry Some recent reflections on my own confusion around spirituality and the artistic path. Because Art is not seen as a path in many circles, I didn't trust my own gifts when I was young, and in an unconscious attempt to overcomplicate my life and do something more meaningful, I tried to do all manner of things, all of which left me depleted and uninspired. Being on an artistic path, which includes of course anything we're bringing from our heart into the world- in craft of not, requires a level of rawness and vulnerability that leaves us feeling defeated on a daily basis. This sense of being defeated I have come to realise, is in itself a spiritual experience, because what we're trying to do feels so immense, we grapple with vast currents of energy, and always fall short, and that is how it should be. We transcend the limited individualist trauma culture of our times by stretching out into a vaster cosmology that includes wild beings not human not animal- whispers we feel but cannot truly see because when we focus on them they vanish. The slippery nature of the creative inspiration is in itself a frustrating and soulful experience. In this way, the creative path brings us to our knees as well as to exalted states of wonder and connection, and a sense of feeling raw pervades. A full human being, not a perfectly healed or optimised human being. The last two stanzas of 'The Man Watching', R.M.Rilke When we win it’s with small things, and the triumph itself makes us small. What is extraordinary and eternal does not want to be bent by us. I mean the Angel who appeared to the wrestlers of the Old Testament: when the wrestlers’ sinews grew long like metal strings, he felt them under his fingers like chords of deep music. Whoever was beaten by this Angel (who often simply declined the fight) went away proud and strengthened and great from that harsh hand, that kneaded him as if to change his shape. Winning does not tempt that man. This is how he grows: by being defeated, decisively, by constantly greater beings. –Translated by Robert Bly Join the LLC Jewellery Family https://lorenlewiscole.lpages.co/jointhetribe/ Come say hi on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lorenlewiscolejewellery/?hl=en

I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast For an Artist, our primary material is our inner world. From the material we engage with there, we blend our internal energy with the force of upward moving inspiration, connecting with material of expression...clay, dance, the voice, the body, rocks, gold, food, sound....the list is endless. If we are full of ideas about how we have to be, we're unavailable for the energy of our voice to move through us, and everybody's voice is unique, stemming from an internal impulse. Yet sometimes we might find we can't quite grab onto the feeling of Authentic Voice moving through us, because the current of authenticity is asking us to feel anger, ugliness, annoyance, desire, frustration, aggression, or anything else our sense of self has disassociated from. There is medicine in the courage required to be fully alive. Here are some ideas for how to create a short but potent deliberate experience of the very emotion we're hiding from, which brings relaxation and flow because it's energetically very expensive to hold ourselves in any shape other than what's natural. To create work that's vibrant to us and others, we want to be in the authenticity of the body. May you be unafraid of the entirety of your inner experience, and alchemise it all in the cauldron of your practice. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast I've been speaking recently with other artists about how we recognise when we need to improve, or how we know when we're stuck in a sort of numb comfort of our work. It's so difficult to assess our incompetence or the vibrancy of our own work, the illusive and non-existent objectivity of our work. Within that, there are some parameters I use to scrutinise my own work and can be useful if you're wanting to deepen in really any area of applying complex skills. The true pleasure of life for me is being in the vibrant heart of learning and challenge within my passions. I don't want to create easy and pleasant work, I want my work to ask something of me, really ask something of me, that's where Beauty always lives, not in what's easy, automated and without effort. If effort is a given, the question then lies in what kind of effort and applied how and in what aspect of my life and skills. I assess my work within these frameworks but you could apply this filter to anything and find a place to improve or seek coaching or the improving of skills. Luck vs Skill (Annie Duke) Skill (technique, tradition, manual repetition) + Soul/Spirit (emotional expression, creative improvisation, energy, personal courage within using the technique) Freedom and constraint for artists, the paradox of limiting our options to make our work better, which requires discipline in the time of the tyranny of choice and seemingly unending possibility. I hope this is helpful in your practice and learning any complex skillset. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast As an artist, our job is to pay attention to the imagery of our interior world, be it musical, kinaesthetic, poetic, based in painting, sculpture or anything at all. We live in a therapy culture that tells us everything we experience is some aspect of the self and can be analysed and understood through intellectual scrutiny stemming from Freudian ideas. When we analyse something we kill it. It ceases to be shimmering with the vast potentiality of being here. Day to day, rational and applied intellectual understanding of things is needed and welcomed in the appropriate setting- of which artistic experience is not. I'm saying that we need to see this experience as a non-ordinary state where we don't pounce on things and shit them down, second guess them or 'witness them dispassionately.' Rather, what's required is raucous and chaotic abandon, complete attention and interest in the thing, letting it have its way with us, chew us up and spit us out, the other side, after swimming in the depths, fresh faced and soulfully renewed, ready to take on the mundane activities of a mainstream artistically impoverished world. Dive baby, dive. Since feeling is first- e.e.Cummings since feeling is first who pays any attention to the syntax of things will never wholly kiss you; wholly to be a fool while Spring is in the world my blood approves, and kisses are a better fate than wisdom lady i swear by all flowers. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast You know that feeling when you look at something, either literally or imaginatively, and as soon as you land on it you can see a thousand things flowering off of the main thing, then a thousand more flowering off of those fractal children ..? Sometimes we can be so inspired the we become all imaginative vision and no earth based implementation, no connection with the elements other than space, and our art gets spaced out and we lose grounding in our lives. This incredible fractal experience of the infinite potentiality of the world, of co-creating and contributing, can also be too much and completely overwhelming when we aren't actually creating. Artistic inspiration is in one lung staying open to spontaneity whilst in the other being disciplined, narrow and focused. This is why as artists we walk between worlds. It is a mystical experience, deep in the sinew of our mitochondria, long before religion, agriculture, modern language and national borders. Human beings were bringing things from the formless into form, and navigating all the challenges associated with this immense yet choiceless task. Because of this, from an evolutionary perspective, I'm thinking about AI and our dopaminergic pathways, the modern desire for reward without effort, and how that's deeply effecting our trust in ourselves as artists and as true human beings. The more we expect hormone drenching feel good rewards to be without exertion and effort, the less we will strive to dig deep within ourselves and bring out what's buried deep in our hearts. An embodied life is nothing like a video game, a Netflix show, or social media, it is desperately more beautiful, intricately more alive, nuanced and activating. I'd love to hear your thoughts in this podcast Tallulah Rendall is many things, a curious and explorative human being, blending her work as an artist with traditional Asian spiritual practices. Why aren't we talking about how essential creative practice is in wellbeing? In 2010, Tallulah began her training in Qi Gong, sound therapy & creative facilitation leading to the creation of her Singing and Creative Facilitation workshops & retreats, Sound Bath Meditation sessions, Qi Gong courses, and one-to-one sound therapy sessions. She has since trained in Authentic Relating and as a Systemic Coach. After years of extensive touring Tallulah experienced burnout in 2010. This led to her learning to maintain her health through a mix of Chinese medicine, acupuncture and nutrition plus training in Qi Gong, sound therapy & creative facilitation. Soon after Tallulah became inspired to support the wellbeing of others, leading to the creation of her Singing and Creative Facilitation workshops & retreats, Sound Bath Meditation sessions and Qi Gong courses, and one-to-one sound therapy sessions. She works worldwide with leading retreat centres and facilitators and is known for both her exceptional facilitation skills, professionalism and quality of care.
