In our fifth Hoops Biz podcast we look at a subject that’s critical to all of us, we’re looking at the data held by sports, associations, state and national bodies on registered players, volunteers, referees and other participants. In an increasingly technology driven environment across sports, adequate governance and community understanding around data privacy is lagging. After an incident where video recording of minors took place without informed consent we dived into the issue of privacy, data security and how your information is being treated, and the more fundamental question of who truly benefits. Data is increasingly central to sports and our look into the current state of how it is collected, used, secured and protected made it clear there are very real issues with legal implications that need to be addressed. In a nuanced discussion covering grassroots, to minors and professional athletes we explore the legal and moral landscape of sports data and privacy. On this pod we are joined by Dr. David Watts, formerly Commissioner for Privacy and Data Protection, a researcher at the University of Melbourne’s Centre For Artificial Intelligence and Digital Ethics and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Australian Catholic University. Dr. Paul Bowell lectures at Swinburne University of Technology and is a member of the Sport Innovation Research Group. His work spans sociology, organisational practice, sport sociology, and sport management. He has engaged in various research and consulting activities across professional sports organisations and teams. Mikhaela Cann has spent over 15 years in elite sport, her career has taken her from the Australian Institute of Sport and Australian representative pathways to becoming a WNBL Champion, NBL1 Champion and professional athlete across Australia and New Zealand. Captain of NBL1 Norths 2026 Minor Premiers, Logan Thunder, she created Assist Athlete Services to challenge the traditional athlete development model, to support athletes from grassroots to professional levels to develop the mental skills, confidence, self-awareness and tools needed to succeed in sport and life. It's a European Summer to remember with the Brolgas representing Australian Masters Basketball at the inaugural FIBA Masters Open Basketball tournament in Corinth, Greece. This is the first time FIBA have organised a Masters tournament, attracting strong competition from around the globe! Rachel Millard joins the podcast to talk to us about the Masters Basketball movement, with a contingent of five women’s teams taking part with the aim to fulfil the hopes and dreams of many Aussie female players to remain active in the game they love. In the 2nd annual Pink Round for Tiana ’T’ Mangakahia’s recently formed foundation Tough4T, Shooting The Breeze is LIVE from the Bear Cave in North Sydney, with special guests Norths Bears’ Emily Simons and a pre-taping with Bears Game Day Operations Lead Josh Fellows. A remarkable celebration of Tiana and her foundation, the Bear Cave was awash in Pink, with a sell out crowd and standing room only to watch Norths Bears play the Sydney Comets In Round 11 of the NBL1 East. Agnes Emma-Nnopu is that winning combination of A high IQ player and an avid learner. She’s applied her quest for knowledge both on and off court so it’s no wonder her AIS Head Coach and basketball legend Kristen Veal pronounced '…winning comes where Agnes is’. In a free-flowing conversation that truly shows her life, interests and what she embodies, you get the picture that Agnes can rise to the occasion and take on any challenges she faces. She’s part of the reigning NBL1 National Champions, the Knox Raiders who are looking to stamp their authority on the NBL1 South again. An Australian National Junior medalist, Agnes debuted in the WNBL last season as part of the Sydney Flames in a challenging season that gave us glimpses of what could be and now, she’s gearing for a switch up reminiscent of her final milestone college season at TCU. Ahead of International Womens Day 2026, Madel Guevarra & Isay Aurellado are partnering to launch their new program ‘Let Her Stay In The Game’ based at Hoops Sports Performance in Western Sydney. The program will enable teenage girls and women to stay in the game longer through access to education, inclusive programming, and connections. Both Madel & Isay have long been involved in community basketball, and fill the gap for inclusivity amongst teenage girls in their communities that have historically seen them drop off the cliff when it comes to retaining girls in sports. The program tips off on 28th February, with an IWD expert panel on 8th March talking to cultural diversity, unconscious bias & science backed research, and tailored training and goal setting sessions throughout March for teenage girls and women to stay in the game. Despite a season ending injury Issy has made a big splash in her WNBL debut, showcasing her gutsy style of play and innate leadership qualities to be the phenomenal teammate as she was renowned for in her Div1 College career at Davidson. The former Wildcat shares what's important to her, as a player, a teammate and person.
