This show features the latest in research, agronomy, and economics of pulse crops (peas, chickpeas, lentils, etc.). Demand for these nutrient-dense, high-protein foods continues to grow. There is also interest from farmers to include more pulses into diverse rotations for benefits like nitrogen fixation and soil health. But the industry continues to face challenges, and we are eager to address these head on. So if you’re a pulse grower or in any way interested in these important crops, hit subscribe and stay tuned for future episodes. Julianne Kellogg is the crop innovation program manager within the R&D function at Ardent Mills. A lot of people might know Ardent Mills for their flour milling, but as you’ll hear today, there is a lot of innovation happening in pulses as well, especially with chickpeas. In addition to pulses, Julianne’s group works with alternative grains like buckwheat, quinoa, flax, food barley, oats. Julianne discusses what is happening in pulse innovation for food manufacturers and consumers, and why companies like Ardent Mills are so excited for the potential in pulses. “ Those food scientists out there are, are wizards. You know, they, they do seem to almost have a crystal ball because really unique things keep coming out with lentils and chickpeas and all the other pl- pulses, and continued, uh, um, like improvement on what's already out there. So I think about just the pastas, and when I buy chickpea pasta or lentil pastas today, I, I'm always shocked by how good they are, and I find that really exciting and encouraging, where maybe before, you know, we were all dabbling in pulses and adding pulses in, and now we're not dabbling. Kevin Haas is a 3rd generation farmer based on his family farm near Jamestown, North Dakota. He’s been planting pulses since the early 1990’s, and currently grows peas, lentils, edible beans, corn, soybeans, wheat, barley and oats. Haas has been a strong advocate for the pulse industry for many years, having served in leadership roles for the Northern Pulse Growers Association, the North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Council, and USA Pulses. In 2004, he broke ground to start the construction of a processing plant specifically for pulse crops in Jamestown, ND. In this episode, Haas shares his experiences both growing pulse crops as a farmer and handling them as a processor and marketer with Legume Matrix. “ I think we need to recognize that the consumer is a very important part of the equation. If the consumer is saying, "Hey, I want this, I'm willing to buy this," we need to pay attention to what they're telling us. And I think we need to educate ourselves in the standpoint of whoever your processor is, your elevator, or whoever you're working with, talk to them. See what markets you are finding success going into and then try to adapt what they're able to be successful at to fit your program in a sense, if it can. Codee Lee is a technical specialist for CHS. Half of his job is research of their proprietary products like fertility products, biologicals, crop protection and adjuvants. The other half of his job is communicating about that research with customers and growers in general. Lee shares the purpose of adjuvants and the advantage they provide producers especially when facing adverse environmental factors. Dr. Audrey Kalil joins this episode as co-host. A plant pathologist by training and background, Kalil is currently an Agronomist and Outreach Coordinator at Horizon Resources and producer of this podcast. “ I've been doing small plot research for 15 years already, and how these products perform and how much benefit these adjuvants will give you is very, very dependent on our environment. The more adversity in the environment, the more benefit you get out of these adjuvants. Kurt Braunwart is the managing owner of Progene Plant Research, a genetic research-based company bringing new innovations and old uses to current varieties in the market. The company is known for their spring and winter pea program, as well as their work in oats and triticale. Braunwart discusses his career in this industry, how he started and built Progene, how he identifies oddball traits that can have mainstream applications, some of the differences and similarities between spring and winter peas, and his hopes for the future as he transitions the company over to new ownership. He began his career as a fieldman for Rogers Seed Company in 1974 in Twin Falls, Idaho. In 1980, he moved to Colfax, Washington, as Plant Manager and later to Othello, Washington, as Operations Manager. In 1995, he purchased and carried forward a dry pea breeding program from Rogers Seed Company. This business became ProGene Plant Research in 1996. “ What we were finding through the whole team was that we've got ways to improve the roots of those peas, to contribute back to soil health. Dr. Lars Kamphuis is an associate professor at Curtin University and the deputy director of the Center for Crop Disease Management where he focuses on crop diseases that impact Australian farmers. The center collaborates extensively with state departments and universities around the country to research diseases relevant to growers throughout Australia. Kamphuis was born and raised in The Netherlands and studied plant breeding and crop protection at Wageningen University. He then had the opportunity to do research in Australia and says he just never left. In this episode, he shares about his experiences with lupins and why the crop is fitting in well in some Australian rotations. He also discusses his work with Sclerotiania stem rot, fungicide resistance and the ascochyta issues Australian farmers have had to deal with. “ A lupin is kind of what we would call an orphan crop. It's not very well known around the globe, but it has a tremendous value. So it does really well in sandy and acidic soils, which is particularly a problem here in Western Australia. Todd Scholz is vice president of research and member services for USA Pulses, which until last year was known as the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council. This year Todd will retire after 26 years with the organization. He joins us today to talk about the industry’s work in getting more crop protection tools labeled for pulse crop growers. USA Pulses is a nonprofit organization that has been pushing for pulses in our food system since 1965. Their work supports over 5,000 growers, processors, and exporters across the US, working from field to fork to strengthen the industry and highlight the value of pulses worldwide. Todd’s job as vice president for research and member services is to take research needs from producers/industry and try to marry it with researchers and funding to answer the need to be able to raise the crop. Today, Todd discusses USA Pulse’s research priorities, their involvement with the IR-4 program and that program’s importance for pulse crop growers, global harmonization of maximum residue limits and some reflections from his 26 years in his role. “ There's an organization called IR-4. It was created in the sixties, and its purpose was to provide the link for specialty crops to get access to pesticides. Generally, when a registrant or a pesticide company wants to label a pesticide, they look for easy returns. So that's corn, soybeans, maybe wheat and other major crops. And so the specialty crops get ignored. So the IR-4 was organized and formed and its history is so amazing. It started with one guy, a desk, and maybe a secretary. Today’s episode goes behind the scenes of pulse crop disease diagnostics with Dr. Uta McKelvy , Dr. Raissa Moura and Erin Gunnink Troth . They explain how Montana State University’s Regional Pulse Crop Diagnostic Laboratory provides post-harvest seed testing for replanting and export phytosanitary needs (including an Ascochyta-plus fungal screen and regulated nematode tests). Dr. McKelvy contrasts this with the Schutter Lab’s in-season plant health diagnostics for crops and other plant-related services, outlining how samples are evaluated and how environmental conditions influence what diseases are seen. Shannah Peterson has been a part of the procurement team at Anchor Ingredients for the past six years. She also works with their sustainability and regenerative programs. She shares great insight as someone who is a part of purchasing and sales decisions of pulses almost daily. “ There's been this humanization of pet food where people really care the quality of pet food that their dogs and animals are consuming the same as humans. So one thing we've seen is as this trend in regenerative agriculture has hit the food space, it's also hit the pet food space. Where a lot of these brands are like we want to be able to source this product sustainably. We want to source it from regenerative farms. So we actually run a regenerative program where we offer regenerative farmers a premium for these pulses being grown regeneratively on their farm. She highlights not just their health advantages but also their role in sustainable agriculture through her online platform and presence. In this episode today, she discusses the global trends in pulse consumption, the nutritional benefits that make them a perfect food, and practical ways to incorporate more pulses into everyday meals. “ I want people to know that it doesn't have to be hard. Again, you could sometimes make those swaps, like have a pulse based pasta or sometimes add chickpea flour to your baking, or pick the dishes that you really like and just add pulses to that, or crisp up some chickpeas, crisp up some lentils, and just sprinkle those on. It doesn't have to be hard. There are canned products. You can cook from dry. Whatever fits into your schedule and works realistically, you don't want to set this goal that's unattainable. Dr. Charles Geddes is a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada based out of Lethbridge, Alberta. His research program focuses primarily on herbicide resistant weeds, where he looks at the discovery of new types of herbicide resistance, characterizing those types of resistance, and then monitoring where resistance is occurring across the Canadian prairies. In this episode, he shares about the growing incidences of resistance across the Canadian Prairie, the types of resistance, why resistance in weeds like kochia is spreading so fast, and what the research is telling us about trying to reverse this troubling pattern. “About 70% of the fields that are annual crop production in the region have at least one type of herbicide resistance present. So group one and two resistance in wild oat, I mean both the in-crop options that we have in small grain cereals, for example. But in kochia, we have resistance, so widespread resistance to group two to the point it's not even worth testing for. Glyphosate resistance is in about 75% of the samples that we test. We then have resistance to auxin mimics, which would be group fours, primarily Fluroxypyr and Dicamba. Marlene Boersch is the co-founder of Mercantile Consulting Venture based in Winnipeg, Canada. She founded the company about 22 years ago after spending over 20 years as a trader focused on Canadian pulse trading. Marlene and her team concentrate on providing market intelligence to farmers and grower associations for not only pulses, but also canola, wheat, oats and corn. Boersch shares about the current supply and demand dynamics for peas, chickpeas and lentils around the world and reflects on what she’s watching in these markets in 2026. Dr. Clifford Hall is a professor in the dairy and food science department at South Dakota State University. He also oversees research on pulse quality and utilization of pulses in food systems. Over the years, Dr. Hall has mentored several students completing research on peas, lentils, and chickpeas. These projects range from including pulses in extruded snacks to using aquafaba as an egg replacer to looking at the functional properties of pulse flours and other pulse fortified products. Dr. Hall has also overseen the annual U.S. Pulse Quality Survey since 2014. He shares how this information is used by the industry, what trends he is seeing in food applications for pulse crops, and where pulses fit into the nutrient density conversation. “ If you are someone that looks at I want to sell the flour, I'm likely going to go to the functionality test, the water absorption index that tells you how much water the pulse can absorb. And that would be important if you want to make, say a gluten-free cookie or you want to put it in a wheat bread. Greg Stamp is the seed sales manager at Stamp Seeds, which he runs with his two brothers, Matthew and Nathan. Stamp Seeds grows and processes retail pedigreed seed for about 60 different crops based out of Enchant, Alberta. Included in that long list of crops are some pulses like peas, chickpeas, lentils, and our subject for today’s episode, faba beans. Greg shares all things faba beans including markets, varieties, agronomic practices, pest and disease considerations, harvesting and more. “ The market I think where there's some value is domestic. It's the people that are fractionating and it's the trend, you know, what's the next new hot protein? Past peas, it's faba beans… They're higher protein than peas and so that's why they want to use them. And then they have a different taste and flavor profile and fractionation. So that's why they're going that way. Greg Bartley is the director of crop protection and crop quality at Pulse Canada. He’s an agronomist by training and a certified crop advisor who has been with Pulse Canada for over six years. Bartley discusses the Keep It Clean Program in Canada, the value and challenges associated with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), some helpful information about desiccants and how various perceptions about chemicals are impacting the global trade of pulses. “ Things are changing. What's been happening within the past five years is not going to be what's happened in the next five years. So even though this is what you did on your farm two years ago. These MRL policies and just policies in general are ever evolving, you need to pay attention and recognize that sometimes things are changing. The level of testing that's going on within the industry is unreal. Dr. Michael Wunsch is a Plant Pathologist at the Carrington Research Extension Center at North Dakota State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2010, and has worked for NDSU ever since, focused on disease management problems on a wide breadth of crops grown in North Dakota. This episode is a follow up to the last episode where Michael focused on understanding disease biology and diagnosis of Ascochyta Blight of chickpea. Today we’re going to go deeper into what it takes to control ascochyta, and specifically how to optimize fungicide applications. When it comes to managing fungal diseases, fungicide resistance is a growing and very concerning issue. Just like you may have heard about herbicide resistance in weed management, we are seeing the same problems in fungal diseases: spraying the same group of chemistries that attack a site in a fungus eventually leads to individuals that mutate. That mutation in the fungus persists as those that are susceptible die off and that leaves room for the resistant strains to proliferate. This happens over time, but at first it can seem negligible, until the resistant strains take over and it appears to happen over night. So today, Michael is going to walk us through three critical areas of fungal disease management: product choice, timing and droplet size. “ So essentially what you want to do is you want to spray your tank mix at early bloom before your first rain as you get into bloom. We're talking at that point, you're typically looking at absolute trace levels of disease. Dr. Michael Wunsch is a Plant Pathologist at the Carrington Research Extension Center at North Dakota State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2010, and has worked for NDSU ever since, focused on disease management problems on a wide breadth of crops grown in North Dakota. In this episode, Wunsch provides us with a lot of helpful details about Ascochyta Blight of chickpea, including some of the historical impacts of the disease, how it spreads, the range of hosts, the process to diagnosing it, and how we distinguish it from another common pathogen called Botrytis. Stay tuned for part two of this conversation where we will discuss how to optimize fungicide applications for this disease. “ You have some degree of Ascochyta in that field, whether it's catastrophic level or a trace level. Those chickpea residues, they're lying in that field, especially now that we're no-till and none of them are buried. They overwinter and that overwintering cycle induces the pathogen to form a different type of fruiting structure, which enables the pathogen to more quickly overcome management tools, whether that's host resistance or fungicides. Dr. Sabine Banniza is a professor of pulse crop pathology and a member of the Crop Development Centre (CDC) at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research program is focused on pulse crop pathology with particular emphasis on problems in Saskatchewan. The overarching theme of Dr. Banniza’s research program is to study the biology of fungal and bacterial pathogens and their interaction with host plants. In today’s episode, Dr. Banniza focuses on two important diseases in lentil: Anthracnose and Stemphylium blight. She is an expert on the pathogen biology and plant-pathogen interactions, and she gives us a lot of useful background on when they first started appearing in Canada, how problematic they are, and how to diagnose and manage each of these. “ Using all of the molecular tools we have now, we’re trying to get that resistance from the wild relative into our cultivated species, and then breed race zero resistance as well. Kyle Okke is an independent crop consultant in Dickinson, North Dakota with his own company, Agile Agronomy. Before starting Agile Agronomy three years ago, he had worked for several years as a regional agronomist in the area with Winfield United. Kyle deals with a wide variety of crops in his area including pulse crops, specifically lentils, chickpeas and field peas. He also has farmer clients that grow durum, wheat, flax, canola, corn, soybeans and sunflowers. In this episode, he discusses the various details about products, timing, water rates, adjuvants, and other considerations for controlling broadleaf weeds. “ You get what you get as far as options for broadleaf control in pulse crops. So there's no perfect product in a broadleaf sense on a post emergent basis. So you're never always going to have excellent activity in everything. Dr. Kevin McPhee is a pulse crop breeder at Montana State University. He’s been there for just over eight years after building a similar program in pulse crop breeding at North Dakota State University. Prior to that, he was working on pulse crops with the USDA ARS based in Pullman, Washington. Together we discuss the pulse crop breeding program in Montana, including their goals for the program in pea, chickpea and lentils. He describes varieties they’ve released and what’s in the pipeline that growers might want to know about for the future. “ What really separates the winter peas from the spring peas and gives them the advantage is when we have a dry year and there isn't the in-season moisture rains for the spring crop. With the winter peas already in the ground…they don't have to worry about planting them in the spring. That's one big advantage. And then they can take advantage of all of the winter moisture that's in the soil and any of the spring rains that occur. They flower a month ahead of the spring types. Chris Holzapfel is the research manager at the Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation (IHARF). IHARF is a producer-led not-for-profit organization based in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. Their mandate is to provide extension type work for agricultural research and demonstration, including a lot of work with pulse crops. Holzapfel started in his role at IHARF in 2005 and over the years they've grown to now conducting 40 to 50 small plot trials as well as some field scale research on crops relevant to the area. He shares some of the research they’ve done with seeding rates, fertility and with supplementing phosphorus in particular. “ Phosphorus is, without a doubt, by a large margin, the most important nutrient to manage.
