Dogs. They’re companions, guardians, and much much more – they complete us. And they just might save us from ourselves. Anna Webb explores all levels of modern dog ownership and brings to life why every dog is extraordinary. She speaks to scientists and experts - people who have and are changing our understanding of dogs - on everything from emotional intelligence to nutrition to behaviour, delving deep into subjects like homeopathy, telepathic communication and the pet food scandal. It's thought provoking, alternative, and not a little subversive. Cover photo by @Gruffpawtraits

We’re joined by Ry Webster, the founder of MorePaws, a clever app which helps dog owners connect with other local dog owners, businesses and services. It allows people to set up local dog walks, large or small or one to ones, encouraging a community spirit around their dogs. Whether it's setting up local walks, it's an App that helps bring the digital world into the park. Understanding that walking in Winter can affect dogs with their exercise routine reduced by 53% (according to Dogs Trust), MorePaws has launched a new National initiative called ' No Need To Walk Alone', a campaign to bring the benefits of the App into play by allowing dog owners to easily invite and set up walks together on dark Winter evenings. A worrying statistic is that 82% of women are afraid of walking alone in the dark - but with MorePaws , it’s easy to make sure that nobody walks their dog alone in the dark this Winter. We’re joined by PDSA Vet, Anna Ewers-Clark, discussing this year’s annual animal well being PAW report where dogs are the focus. Revealing that one in five owners do no research before getting a pet, while just 16% investigate the costs, as PDSA highlights concerning gaps in animal care the proportion of owners doing no research before getting a pet has risen from 13% to 21% in just two years. Meanwhile, just 16% researched the cost of pet ownership, down from 24% in 2024, raising concerns about whether owners fully understand the lifelong commitmen t involved. PDSA warns that owners may unknowingly put their pets at risk of preventable health and behavioural problems because they do not fully understand their animals' needs. The report also highlights potential welfare concerns, with almost a third of dogs (32%) walked for no more than 30 minutes a day, while 32% of dog owners have used at least one adversive training method and 12% have not trained their dog at all. Meanwhile, 43% of rabbits are reported to live alone despite being highly social animal s, a nd 43% of rabbit owners say their pet spends between 11 and 23 hours a day confined to a hutch. More than three-fifths (61%) of pet owners found their pet online, including through advertising sites and social media, where PDSA warns irresponsible breeding and re-homing practices can be difficult to identify. We’re joined by Caroline Griffith, Founder of the Natural Dog Expo, talking about the much anticipated, upcoming ‘Expo on 1st & 2nd May 2027. We discuss nutrition and why Caroline has launched the first R’Awards, an industry awards supported by PIF (Pet Industry Federation) to celebrate ‘fresh, whole into the bowl', with raw balanced and complete options, along with lightly cooked alternatives. As the fastest growing sector in the pet food sector, Caroline has been a passionate raw food feeder, just like host Anna Webb for several decades. Chewing the fat, we discuss why this ’niche’ is expanding, and why celebrating the companies offering options is so important. This week we're joined by musician, actor, and activist Collette Cooper about her campaign to raise awareness of MBR Acres that breeds beagles for experimentation. Collette, a long time supporter of Camp Beagle, wanted to do more than protest so along with Lois Winstone, came up with an idea of a punk-style 'Free the Beagles' T-shirt that could be sold to help raise money and awareness. Fashion designer, Gresham Blake, then got involved and designed the T-shirt and suggested the slogan 'God Save the Beagles' and famed photographer Rankin did the photo shoot. All money raised goes to Beagle Freedom Project UK. This week we're talking to Dr Graham Matheson and Joe Flanagan about the bone regenerative product Tvati. This new holistic joint support for dogs is based on traditional Maori medicines in the Cook Island. Dr Graham aka Cookie, had to get permission from the island's traditional leaders to research and develop the remedy for wider use. Joe Flanagan is distributing Tvati through Ingenious Probiotics. Dr Graham has seen remarkable recovery with athletes and Anna can attest that Prudence is also seeing the benefits. We’re joined by Vet, Dr Humphrey Grimmett, discussing why adding long chain oral Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can help balance the body’s HA resources as it naturally depletes with age. Playing a key role as nature’s ‘sponge’ or shock absorber, HA is a compound dogs produce naturally, but its production slows down with age or after injury. This can impact on mobility as one of the main purposes of HA is to cushion the moveable joints, the knees, hips, and shoulders enabling them to move smoothly, rather than becoming stiff and potentially causing pain. We chat about other factors that HA contributes to in human’s as well as dogs and of course cats too! This includes eye health and skin health. But Humphrey points out that the HA found in face creams is a short chain form, whereas taken orally the long chain has been scientifically proven to be absorbed more efficiently. We’re joined by Orthopedic Surgeon, Gordon Maclellan, chewing the fat on several issues, not least environmental factors implicating many health conditions, like hip dysplasia and undescended testicles. We discuss the benefits of Ultrasound over X-rays, and why Ultrasound in the Veterinary profession arguably could be optimised more in line with the use of Ultrasound in human medicine. We also discuss aspects of epi-genetics and how the environment from the water we drink and the food we eat can influence individual DNA expression and why products often used in the home like air fresheners contribute to an indoor environment often considered over three times more toxic than outdoors. We talk about testing before treating not only with Titre Tests and why ultra sounds are gradually more commonly being used for diagnosis. Helping to guide them with affordable access to experienced, qualified behaviour professionals offering humane, welfare-centred guidance. It's intended to provide clarity and early support helping families understand what their pets are communicating before difficulties escalate. We’re talking about the resurgence of the High Street, as promoting independent shops that play a role in community, not least your local ’pet shop’ where dogs, as part of the family, play a major role in community spirit! Explaining why helping steer owners away from the large ‘out of town’ superstores back to the high street, we’re joined by Naturaw’s co-founder, Chris Broadbent and Amelia Black who owns The Tetbury Pet Shop. We discuss why customers often prefer to choose carefully selected brands and spend time in store, feeling connected to the products they’re buying. Amelia has taken the radical step to stand out by only stocking one dog food brand as she is confident Naturaw is the best choice, not just for her own dog. She is passionate about stocking brands that are not available to buy in superstores, and offering an in-store experience, flying the flag as a community led pet shop on Tetbury’s historic market town high street. We chat about how Telepathy is about intention, and reference Dr Rupert Sheldrake and his book, Dogs that Know when their Owners are Coming Home. We talk about how Mary believes in the power of the 'third eye’ , and on some remarkable client cases. We’re joined by Debbie Wilson of the International Animal Coalition (IAWPC) and Actor, Animal Activist and Advocate, Peter Egan discussing the latest on the campaign to end the violent and inhumane killing of street dogs in Morocco. Thousands of stray street dogs have been killed by either by extreme violence, being shot or poisoned. The reason - the forthcoming FIFA World Cup in 2030, which Morocco is co-hosting alongside Portugal and Spain. Despite being informed by the International Coalition - IAWPC that Morocco is in clear breach of all recognised and acceptable standards of civilised behaviour in relation to the humane treatment, welfare and protection of dogs, as well as in clear breach of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child., FIFA has refused to comment or take action. It's a moment to remember what Mahatma Gandhi famously said: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
