Listen on Apple PodcastsNo marriage ends in a single moment. It's like going down a ladder, one rung at a time, and most men do not notice until they are near the bottom. Today we sit down to name the 7 tactics the devil uses to pull a marriage apart, and the 5 steps you can take today to prevent the devil from winning. We discuss how the disorder in marriage does not come from the nature of man and woman, but from sin, and how resentment is one of the hardest things to overcome. 🟢 Join Catholic Gentleman+ for over 31 sessions of exclusive formation, daily saint quotes, and a brotherhood of men pursuing holiness: https://catholicgentlemanplus.com 👉 Devin Schadt's new book The Rule: https://sophiainstitute.com/product/the-rule/ COUPON CODE for 20% Off: Gentleman20 Video Producer – Pietro Damasceno ______________________ -- FOLLOW THE CATHOLIC GENTLEMAN – ➡️ https://www.instagram.com/catholicgentleman ➡️ https://www.facebook.com/TheCatholicGentleman ➡️ https://x.com/catholicgent Learn more about your ad choices. Work will take everything you give it. Give it enough and it will be the black hole that swallows your prayer, peace, and your marriage. Today we discuss Ora et Labora, the ancient rhythm of prayer and work that St. Benedict modeled his life after. We explain why work can feel like a curse, the difference between your occupation and your vocation, why good men get addicted to the office, and what St. Gregory the Great named as the hardest labor of all. 🟢 Join Catholic Gentleman+ for over 31 sessions of exclusive formation, daily saint quotes, and a brotherhood of men pursuing holiness: https://catholicgentlemanplus.com 👉 Devin Schadt's new book The Rule: https://sophiainstitute.com/product/the-rule/ COUPON CODE for 20% Off: Gentleman20 Video Producer – Pietro Damasceno Learn more about your ad choices. Men are facing many problems: 80% of suicides in this country are men, 1 in 5 struggle with severe loneliness, marriage rates for men 35 and older have dropped from 90% to under 60% — and the list goes on. We can feel it, but we struggle to name what is really causing all of this. You cannot beat an enemy you cannot name. So in this episode, we name four of them. Today we explore the answers to these questions — and how to avoid the answers the world wants to give you. We get into four specific threats and four very concrete responses, what it actually means for a man to consecrate himself to our Blessed Mother, and why spending time with the Love of the universe changes everything. Other modesty videos mentioned: Jackie Angel on Modesty in the Real World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKACACmlW3U Leah Darrow on Modest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ84oSJcrFE While reading the comments from a previous video, we came across this one: "Please make a video giving husbands tips on how to help their wives dress more modestly, or help those women that struggle with modesty." We read every one, and this time, we didn't just reply. We built an entire episode around it. It doesn't start with policing her wardrobe. A woman dresses from how she's been convinced to see herself and the culture has spent decades doing the convincing. In this episode, we address: What modesty actually is according to St. Thomas Aquinas and why clothing is further down the list than you think. We explain the four real reasons women dress the way they do, why men feel they can't say anything, why women feel they can't be told, and we provide five practical actions a Catholic man can take that don't involve a single word about her outfit. 👉 Devin Schadt's new book The Rule: https://sophiainstitute.com/product/the-rule/ Video Producer – Pietro Damasceno Learn more about your ad choices. The Culture of Death is not random. Today we discuss the intelligence behind it and how your home is the first target. We dive deep into why you are so busy it hurts, and why you try so hard to “keep work at work” without realizing this is hurting your family. Feeling as if you are being pulled in a hundred different directions and looking for one simple solution is not the answer. The devil slowly seeps into the ordinary life of a family’s home, and we want to show how to prevent it. We hand our identity to the things we own. The house, the car, the title in the email signature, the number in the account. We see a man who is thirty seven and retired and decide he must have life figured out, and we measure ourselves against a pile we know nothing about. Underneath a lot of it is fear, the fear of losing what we have and the fear of who we would be without it. Devin and I sat down to talk about money, and we ended up talking about that fear, and about a truth we work hard to dodge: none of it belongs to us. Our bodies, our homes, every part of our lives, all of it on loan. Today we dig into the four pillars of stewardship from the USCCB, the parable of the talents, and a framework for giving that works at any income level. We tell the story of Conrad Hilton, a man who lost nearly everything in the Depression, who gave away 97% of his fortune and why his son eventually did the same. The world is stripping three things away from every Catholic man. Not in ways you'd recognize as an attack but disguised as a busy evening, a competing priority, or a reasonable excuse. Then one day you wake up and realize something essential is gone. In this episode, we sit down to name three things the world, the flesh, and the devil are working together to take from you: your role as Kustos, what it means to be the guardian and protector of your family, and why the enemy targets this first. Why original sin was an assault on fatherhood itself, and what it looks like to choose your children the way God the Father chooses you. A Fortune 250 company's Salesman of the Year. Devoted husband. Faithful Catholic father and a 17-year addiction no one knew about, including his wife. John Edwards spent nearly two decades living two lives at once. He closed sales by day, chased down his dealer by afternoon, and kept the mask on at home so well that no one knew. It held together right up until the morning he sat in a jail cell on Good Friday with nothing left to control. This is the story of how a man hits the absolute bottom and finds out it was never the end of his story. Today, John Heinen and Devin Schadt sit down with John to talk about what actually drives addiction, why isolation is the devil's first move on a man, and how the wound of "am I enough" sends so many men looking for affirmation in all the wrong places. The Church calls Saint Joseph the Terror of Demons. A carpenter. A foster father. A man who speaks not a single word in Scripture. And hell is terrified of him. In this episode, John Heinen sits down with Devin Schadt, executive director of the Fathers of Saint Joseph, to unpack the four reasons Satan hates Saint Joseph. These are the virtues that send demons running. The same virtues every Catholic man is called to build. We discuss how being called a just man used to be the highest honor a man could receive, the importance of prompt obedience, confidence, and magnanimity, and silent sacrifice. Saint Joseph gives us the example and pattern to achieve this. 🟢 FREE Handmade Rosary This Month for those joining CG+ https://catholicgentlemanplus.com/rosary Drift It accumulates in the gap between who we intended to be and who we've actually become. Recent studies show that 63% of men wish they didn't have to be adults, and 41% of men between 24 and 29 don't feel like adults at all. That's not a personality quirk. That's a crisis. This week, John and Devin trace how we got here, from G. Stanley Hall's early 1900s invention of adolescence as a cultural category, to the market forces and generational messaging that turned extended boyhood into an identity. But the the deeper question is what it actually takes to move from boy to man, and the answer isn't hustle or stoicism. It starts with taking responsibility, stop blaming, and build toward conviction. As Aquinas makes clear, the order of love in a man's life begins with God and flows outward through vocation, marriage, and fatherhood. The irreplaceable call that cannot be transferred or replaced. And it ends with self-mastery, not as an end in itself, but because a man who cannot possess himself has nothing to give. St. Paul says it plainly in 1 Corinthians 13:11: "When I became a man, I gave up childish ways." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
🟢 FREE Handmade Rosary This Month for those joining CG+ https://catholicgentlemanplus.com/rosary We know the temptations that hunt us, the ones we can't seem to outrun no matter how serious we get about our interior life. In this episode, John Heinen and Devin Schadt walk through a practical four-temptation framework with the corresponding virtues that combat each one. From lust as a disordered desire rather than a foreign attack, to the "respectable sin" of greed we praise as ambition, to the pride we cannot see in ourselves, to the sloth hiding inside our busiest days. We get honest about why temptation is not the sign that we're losing but the sign that the devil has marked us because he's afraid of us, why tithing belongs to today and not to some future income, why we're called to pursue excellence without attaching ourselves to it, and what Mother Teresa told the priest who was too busy for adoration. This isn't a list of sins to feel bad about. It's the field on which virtue is won, built on the conviction that to be a man is to have virtue, and to have virtue is to have power. 👉 Devin Schadt's new book The Rule: https://sophiainstitute.com/product/the-rule/ COUPON CODE for 20% Off: Gentleman20 Video Producer – Pietro Damasceno Learn more about your ad choices. 🟢 FREE Handmade Rosary This Month for those joining CG+ https://catholicgentlemanplus.com/rosary John Sablan spent the better part of his adult life being what he now calls the X factor in his family: the one holding everything back. Raised in abuse, living a wayward life, he and his wife stumbled into the Catholic Church, and he settled comfortably into being lukewarm. His marriage came to the edge. Then at a men's conference, with a general confession, and a priest praying deliverance over him in Latin changed the trajectory. In this conversation, John Heinen and Devin Schadt sit down with John Sablan to get at the real roots of what's keeping men soft and what it actually takes to do something about it. Rooted in Thomistic psychology (which he studied under Fr. Chad Ripperger), John defines effeminacy the way Aquinas did: not a personality flaw, but a moral vice. The inability to deny pleasure in order to pursue the arduous good. He unpacks the trap men fall into when they finally decide to get serious: trading softness for stoicism, white-knuckling virtue as a self-improvement project, making the whole thing about proving themselves rather than serving God. They also tackle why "do you want to save your marriage?" is the wrong question. 🔥 Follow John and all his work - www.serviaminstitute.com www.johnsablan.com www.worldablaze.org FREE Handmade Wooden Rosary with Pardon Crucifix This Month for those joining CG+. 🟢 Join Catholic Gentleman+ for over 31 sessions of exclusive formation, daily saint quotes, and a brotherhood of men pursuing holiness: https://catholicgentlemanplus.com/rosary Learn more about your ad choices. This stat should shake every Catholic father awake: 85 to 90 percent of kids raised in Catholic homes will leave the faith by adulthood. We've somehow accepted that as normal. It's not. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Greg Popcak, a Catholic counselor with over 30 years in the trenches and author of more than 20 books, to talk about what the families who beat those odds are actually doing differently. Greg walks me through the 12 research-validated habits that families who successfully pass on the faith all share in common, what he calls the Liturgy of Domestic Church Life. We get into why just dragging your kids to Mass and white-knuckling the family Rosary isn't enough if there's no joy behind it, why your kids need to experience the Faith as the source of the meaning in your home and not just the source of the rules. He breaks down what headship actually looks like when it's modeled after the ministerial priesthood rather than a dictator, and he tells a story from his time in Hong Kong about a father who tried to hug his daughter for the first time and she didn't even know what he was doing. Exorcist priest Fr. Chad Ripperger grew up working in his father's diesel mechanics shop, where he learned that reality doesn't care what you think or how you feel. A bolt either fits or it doesn't. A machine is either fixed or it isn't. And a man is either being formed or he's being stunted. In this conversation, Fr. Ripperger unpacks why young men today are trapped in adolescence, what the curse of Adam has to do with effeminacy, and how the simple act of learning to use tools and do hard work is the antidote to the softness crippling an entire generation. From the lessons his father taught him through one-liners and long days under the hood, to why men find such deep fulfillment in buying a new tool, to how his formation as a mechanic directly prepared him for his work as an exorcist, Fr. Ripperger connects the practical and the spiritual in a way only he can. If you're raising boys or trying to become the man you never had an example of, this one's worth your time. Every man knows the difference between a morning that owns him and a morning he owns. In this episode, Devin Schadt and I walk through a practical seven-point framework for building a morning routine that actually holds. From the heroic minute and the science behind a fixed wake time, to what you put in your body before prayer, to why your evening examen the night before may be the most overlooked factor in how your next day unfolds. We get honest about what didn't work, like falling asleep face-down at 4:45 a.m., white-knuckling 18 months without caffeine, and trying to out-pray their wives out of competition rather than conviction. This isn't a productivity hack. It's a rule of life built on obedience, worship, and the promise that God doesn't bless leftovers. He blesses first fruits. Men today are doing everything they’ve been told, working hard, providing, staying faithful, yet they still feel disconnected or confused from their wives and children. In this episode, John Heinen and Devin Schadt sit down with Adam Lane Smith to uncover why. Drawing from the science of attachment theory, Adam exposes how a man can be highly capable on the outside while remaining emotionally isolated on the inside, and how that disconnect quietly shapes every relationship he has. They explore the hidden dynamics behind fading desire, emotional shutdown, and why so many men default to solving problems alone. Adam also lays out a clear framework for rebuilding connection in marriage, including the overlooked steps that either strengthen or slowly erode a wife’s trust and intimacy. Men using the internet have no idea they are losing a war they never knew they were fighting. The algorithm is not neutral, it is rewarding outrage, feeding pride, and quietly rewiring the way men think, speak, and relate to God. Timothy Flanders, Editor-in-Chief of OnePeterFive, has lived inside this tension for years. He has built a major Catholic journal online while wrestling personally with what the digital world does to a man's soul. In this episode, John Heinen and Devin Schadt sit down with Timothy to lay out what Scripture actually demands of a man's words online, why Christians are often the worst offenders in the digital public square, and how fallen angels use social media to attack Catholic men in ways most would never recognize. Timothy introduces the Internet Promise, a set of commitments rooted directly in Scripture, and offers a concrete battle plan for men who are ready to stop being used by the internet and start using it for the Kingdom. In this episode of Into the Desert, Fr. Ken Geraci and John Heinen confront the tension at the heart of Palm Sunday: the same voices that cry “Hosanna” can quickly turn to “Crucify Him.” What looks like devotion can collapse under pressure, revealing how easily men drift with the crowd, seek approval, and abandon the path of Christ when it becomes costly. They press into the question: “Will I remain with Him when the path leads through suffering, rejection, and contradiction?” This is not about chasing hardship or proving strength. It is about surrendering preference and choosing the will of God over comfort, efficiency, and control. Because the Christian life is not built on the easy road or the hard road, but on obedience. And Holy Week reveals it clearly: every man must decide which voice he will follow, and whether his “Hosanna” will last when the Cross appears. 🟢 FREE ROSARY - Join Catholic Gentleman+ with over 30 sessions of exclusive formation, daily saint quotes, and a brotherhood of men pursuing holiness: https://catholicgentlemanplus.com/rosary 🟢 Join us as we go Into the Desert with Fr.
