Toby is the new flight attendant and she's really learning the ropes, but, not to worry, her mom is along for the ride to help her make sensible choices in local cuisine, and men! Andrea arrives in Hong Kong to find out that she's lost her apartment AND her boyfriend! She'll need every ounce of her martial arts skills to fin him! Then there's Sherry, horny but loveable Sherry, who's on a mission to hook up with every guy she meets! Or is that her mission? Or does she have something more nefarious at work? Long-time Roger Corman collaborator Ciro Santiago makes his New World directorial debut here, but not without some help from a few New World directors like Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) and Curtis Hanson (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL)! We go into what they worked and why they they were asked to do so, along with other insights into the movie, such as the inspiration behind the movie's title! We continue #SEXtember 2: FORE-play!! with a BLUE LAGOON rip-off - 1982's PARADISE. Like the BLUE LAGOON, PARADISE spends a significant amount of time exploring what happens when scantily-clad young adults are stranded in the desert and discover each other's body parts are super interesting. The real plot of PARADISE, though, is the life and times of Geoffrey - the aging man-servant. Geoffrey should be retired but, alas, here is... trying to bring Sarah (Phoebe Cates) and David (Willie Aames) to a port so they can both go home to their families. Poor Geoffrey is completely over his skis and he knows it. It's a shame we don't spend more time listening to Geoffrey's inner monologue before he is tragically (and willingly) murdered. Did he give up his life by putting himself in harm's only so he could get away from Sarah and David (probably just David)? We'll never know. Instead, we must tolerate child-like temper tantrums by David while Sarah is infatuated with taking showers more than anyone should living in a desert. We're also treated to equally amorous Chimpanzees. One of the Chimpanzees is particularly amorous with himself. Think about it. We'll wait. PARADISE is a very odd movie. On the one hand, it has the silliness of a children's movie including the aforementioned Chimpanzees and plenty of silly music. On the other hand, there is a significant amount of nudity. So, PARADISE is not a great family movie. If you're down for both, then this is the movie for you. Maybe the only movie for you. Ever. We talk about how David and Sarah were able to build a professional-grade beach cabin out of... scraps and palm fronds and how they find copious amounts of fruit in a DESERT! They learn to make clothes, tan leather and somehow craft cook wear but (for most of the movie) can't figure out how to use a bow and arrow. Again, this is a kids movie. A very naked kids movie. We were saddened to discover that R.J. Kizer, a longtime editor and director for New World Pictures, passed away earlier this month. We were fortunate to be able to speak with R.J. several times about his incredible and long career, starting with editing 1979's UP FROM THE DEPTHS, 1980's BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, and 1981's GALAXY OF TERROR before moving on to directing the English-language sections of GODZILLA 1985 and co-directing 1988's HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN. R.J. transitioned to sound editing, working on movies like FIRE BIRDS and ARACHNAPHOBIA before getting a chance to finally direct his own feature, 1992's DEATH RING. The film, a take on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, brings huge starpower, well familial starpower, in Mike Norris (son of Chuck), Chad McQueen (son of Steve), and Don Swayze (brother of Patrick), who star as a trio fighting for their lives in a hunt designed by wealthy manhunt organizer played by Billy Drago. R.J. may not have believed us when we told him, but we really enjoyed the movie, as you'll hear in the episode, which is our tribute to R.J.'s memory. For one, the film took Marc and Ryan back to their San Diego roots, where the infamous Survival of the Fittest competition takes place, a contest Mike Norris easily wins only to become Drago's number one target. As we discuss, we will challenge you on your knowledge of 1980's local San Diego newscasters, the power of Sun-In, and the exact time it takes for chloroform to work its magic. Plus, snake blood! Paul began his long career working for Roger Corman's lawyer Barbara Boyle and then the studio itself where he helped negotiate the deal for Corman's infamous Lumberyard Studio in Venice, California, where New World films like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and GALAXY OF TERROR were filmed! Paul's long history with the company leads us to talk about a wide variety of films, including CRIMES AND WHISPERS, THE PRIZE FIGHTER, HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, and PIRANHA! When Corman sold New World to new ownership, Paul stayed on at New World where he was able to enjoy the success of ANGEL, meet Grace Jones during VAMP, and be the executive in charge in Paris while Robert Altman directed BEYOND THERAPY ! It's #HAHAugust III y'all. A time for us to kick up our heels and have a good laugh. We couldn't think of a better way to kick off a month of belly laughs than with 1987's BEYOND THERAPY. Even the name of the movie (and stage play) is funny. It's full of super funny actors too including Julie Hagerty (AIRPLANE!), Jeff Goldblum (TRANSYLVANIA 6-500), and Christopher Guest (WAITING FOR GUFFMAN). It's directed by Robert Altman (NASHVILLE) who showed us Heuy Lewis's dong in SHORT CUTS. NOTE: we talked about this for a second in the episode, but it was cut for time. Sorry. BEYOND THERAPY is about unbelievable people looking for love with the help of their equally unbelievable therapists in an unbelievable New York setting because the movie was actually shot in Paris. Anyway, it's a stage play that became a movie that everyone on the set thought would be amazing, but, pieced together as a whole, failed to live up to expectations. It's like a Reuben sandwich where corned beef is replaced with bologna. If that doesn't make sense, listen to the episode for additional explanations. There, he would meet James Cameron and would work on films like THE TERMINATOR and THE ABYSS! We walk through Ernest's career, which included working on John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING as well as doing effects and main title sequences for a variety of New World Pictures films from the Corman era to the next ownership group! We discuss the difficulty of bats in SATURDAY THE 14TH and Sybil Danning's costume in the TV edit of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, the tricky ending of DEATHSTALKER, having lots of time and no time to work on the title sequences for GODZILLA 1985 and PRETTY SMART, and how Ernest's work on TAG: THE ASSASSINATION GAME may have played a key role in casting for THE TERMINATOR! Sci-fi July: An Infinity of Titles keeps on rolling with 1986's STAR SLAMMER aka PRISON SHIP aka STAR SLAMMER: PRISON SHIP aka THE ADVENTURES OF TAURA: PRISON SHIP STAR SLAMMER. Directed Fred Olen Ray, STAR SLAMMER (aka PRISON SHIP aka... you get it) blends comedy with sword and sandal movies, women in prison movies, sci-fi movies and girls just want to have fun movies into a taught hour and 26 minutes. STAR SLAMMER stars Sandy Brook (They Call Me Bruce?) as Taura who is wrongly confined to a prison ship aka STAR SLAMMER (not again). In reality, STAR SLAMMER is little more than a prison-style all-inclusive resort where instead of sitting by the pool, you get pushed around by intimidating staff. You get free food, alcohol, impromptu dance clubs and, the most coveted of experiences, solitary confinement. We get deep in this episode. Erica asks the question everyone has been asking, "what is the purpose of a thong in space?" We discuss the effects of space travel on perms including whether the bends also have an effect. A bucket list guest, director Fritz Kiersch, returns with the second half of our conversation that covers his move from the commercial world to the New World (ahem) of features starting with 1984's CHILDREN OF THE CORN and continuing with 1985's TUFF TURF as Fritz continued to deliver success after success for New World Pictures. June Gloom 2: Down to Frown is officially underway, and we are kicking it off with the 1980 British drama RICHARD'S THINGS, starring Liv Ullmann and Amanda Redman. RICHARD'S THINGS is the story of Kate, a woman whose husband Richard has the decency to die before the movie even really gets going, leaving behind his things — and, as Kate slowly pieces together, his mistress. What follows is a methodical, quivering-lipped journey through grief, betrayal, and the unlikely friendship that blooms between a widow and her late husband's younger lover, Josie. United by their mutual loss, mutual exasperation, and a shared appreciation for lighting a cigarette without ever actually smoking it, the two women navigate the emotional wreckage of loving the same deeply average man. There's so much to uncover in RICHARD'S THINGS. And by uncover, we don't mean nudity. There's not much of that. But there are omelets. There are hugs — intense, hard-R hugs. There is a burglar in slacks. There are disgruntled in-laws. And eventually, there is a road-side breakup that may be the most efficient ending of a relationship in cinema history. We discuss the film's notoriously deliberate pacing — which is to say, every line of dialogue arrives as though it has traveled a great distance and needs a moment to rest. Just as soon as it began, Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 4: EVER! has come to a close, but not before we do battle in a - shhhhh! - "secret" war with SPIDER-MAN: SECRET WARS! Stitched together with five episode of the Spider-Man Animated Series and released on home video, SECRET WARS sees Spidey go up against The Beyonder and Madame Web in a test to see if good can triumph over evil! Why did The Beyonder have to transport Spider-Man and other heroes onto a distant planet to watch that when they seem to do it on the regular on Earth? Who knows! All we know is there are some rules and also not some rules. Made for Showtime, Black Scorpion is the first in a series of made-for-cable movies and a series. As Chris wisely points out, "it's Batman for Skinamax". Black Scorpion may not be what you're expecting and that's what makes it so much fun. Darcy Walker (Black Scorpion) is on a mission to rid Angel City of evildoers and "do" her former police partner. While he is worried about a potential HR violation, she knows that with some latex and an eye mask, he'll never know it's her. This brings up a legitimate question. If your co-worker or friend or spouse put on a mask and proceeded to romance you, would you think it was a completely different person? Be honest. We also really show our age with this episode. We talk about the challenges of trying to get through a 2 and a half hour movie in one sitting when your getting up there in years. There are two Robert Eurich references. We discuss the reboot of Love Boat and Side Out, the best volleyball movie ever made. There is an above average amount of "dongle talk". We get a visit by Jan from HR.
