Inspired by High Fidelity and the "Top 5" List, The Reel Debaters were founded by unapologetic movie nerds with "sharp minds" and a pure love of cinema from Manitoba's vibrant and ever-growing film scene. each episode, this crew of cinephiles and industry insiders sit down to explore film and television through a lens that’s equal parts irreverent and insightful, with deep respect for storytelling and a sense of humour that doesn’t take itself too seriously. When not arguing with each other to a sure and cinematic death, they fill the gaps with conversations from within Manitoba’s film industry stretching all the way to Hollywood's doorstep. They even talked to a Kennedy. Behind the ludicrous landscape that is their collective consciousness lies a genuine curiosity about how we connect with the stories we tell and the impact film has on who we are. "I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not who you are like… Books, records, films – these things matter. Call me shallow, but it’s the fuckin’ truth" Rob

The Oscars are supposed to be the final word on the best film of the year. But every movie fan has at least one moment where the envelope opens, and the reaction is: wait… what? This week on The Reel Debaters , we step into the cinematic multiverse and debate the Oscars that almost were. If a single vote, campaign, or moment of momentum had shifted, the Academy’s history might look very different. And what else would Oscar week be like with a conversation about good old Timothy Chalamet stepping on his own campaign with not-so-kind words about the ballet and opera, which gets a little attention as well. Welcome back to the circus. Episode #311 is stacked with fan fiction fantasies, Oscar-season chaos, and a classic Reel Debaters internet skirmish that absolutely did not need to happen. This episode includes: The Teen Heartthrob Fan Fiction Debate We challenged each other to pitch the best teen heartthrob fan fiction idea imaginable. Tropes were abused. Logic was abandoned. Dignity left the building early. You’re welcome. Movie Reviews Mel Brooks’ The 99 Year Old Man – Does the comedy legend still have the spark, or is this one strictly for the diehards? Predator: Badlands – New setting, same primal rules. We break down whether the franchise still knows how to hunt. The Threads Fight That Wouldn’t Die... Michael found himself deep in the trenches of Threads after arguing that Avatar being nominated for Best Costume Design actually makes sense . What followed was a spirited, slightly exhausting debate about CGI, world-building, and where costumes truly begin and end. https://www.wetaworkshop.com/projects Oscar Drama Corner... We also dig into why Wicked: For Good failed to land an Oscar nomination , with industry chatter pointing to awkward marketing, confusing campaign messaging, and reported voter fatigue. This week, we descend into the shadowy corridors of Safehaven , the new supernatural thriller premiering on Tubi . This week's guest is a double-threat force behind the series: the head of special FX and makeup design and the actor who steps into the enigmatic role of Francis Zelk, Aaron Merke We get to find out more about the architect behind Safehaven’s bruised dreamscapes and haunting practical effects, and also being one of the faces pulling you deeper into the show’s mystery. On this episode, he walks us through the strange dance of designing terror for the cast while performing within it. From early concept sketches to surreal on-set moments, from building creatures out of psychology to embodying a character tied to the show’s unsettling atmosphere, we explore how Safehaven’s world was stitched together. About SAFEHAVEN Based on the graphic novel, Safehaven follows Jenna Frost, a teenager tormented by visions that claw at her sanity and reality. As those visions take shape, the town’s darkest corners crawl into the light. The series blends psychological horror, supernatural lore, and YA drama into one slow-burning nightmare. This week, we sit down with writer-director Coby Friesen to talk about his haunting and provocative new short film, Cruising Gamorah — a bold exploration of faith, repression, and desire set against the eerie calm of a reportedly haunted creek. Childhood friends Chris and Alex reunite for a camping trip that spirals into tension, temptation, and truth as their worldviews — and hidden feelings — collide under a dark, watching presence. We dig into the film’s origins, the creative balance between spirituality and sexuality, and how Colby crafted such an emotionally charged story within Winnipeg’s thriving indie scene. *We got new mics, so we're working out the tiny hum you hear in this one, apologies from the kitchen* Host: Michael Petrow Guest: Coby Friesen Executive Producer: Michael Petrow Editing & Mixing: Michael Petrow Recorded at: Sick Bad Panda Podcast Studios, Winnipeg Join the Debate: DM or tag us in your debate takes on this episode or any other.
