If I took away your qualifications, job title, clinic and professional reputation, how would you describe who you actually are? In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I’m joined once again by my good friend Wilson Lawrence, an executive behaviour and leadership coach based in Nevis in the Caribbean. Wilson introduces the fascinating idea of becoming “identity locked” , where we become so attached to a particular role that we struggle to know who we are outside of it. For podiatrists, that could mean becoming so wrapped up in being the clinician, clinic owner, employer or expert that the role slowly becomes our entire identity. We also explore self-doubt and imposter syndrome; why evidence is one of the best weapons against the stories we tell ourselves; the principles behind psycho-cybernetics; and why knowing your true identity can give you greater confidence in difficult or unfamiliar situations. Wilson also shares a simple exercise you can try immediately: identify three adjectives that genuinely describe your personality and character, then find the evidence that proves they’re true. And because this is a conversation between Wilson and me, we occasionally wander gloriously off course into Jocko Willink, shaved heads, religion, communication, perception and a few other places I certainly didn't expect. But underneath all the laughs is an important question: Are you living and working as the person you genuinely are, or have you become the role you play? If you’ve ever questioned who you are beyond podiatry, this conversation is definitely worth your time. SPECIAL OFFER: Wilson is offering Podiatry Legends listeners a complimentary 30-minute Blueprint Call during September 2026 (I'm sure you could push it out a little further) to discuss identity, personal effectiveness or efficiency. Why do we spend so much time worrying about the risks of making a change, but rarely consider the risks of doing nothing? In Part Two of Why Podiatrists Play It Safe , I explore 13 more reasons podiatrists resist change, even when they know their practice, career, or personal development could benefit from doing something differently. We look at the fear of being judged by your team, getting burnt by a previous experience, waiting for evidence before experimenting, comparing yourself with others, worrying about becoming too commercial and being afraid to stand out. I also explain why trying something new doesn't mean you're committing to it forever. Most business experiments can be tested, adjusted or reversed. But perhaps the biggest issue is that we often overestimate the downside of change while underestimating the cost of doing nothing . Not increasing your fees, improving your systems, learning new technology, developing your leadership skills or changing ineffective marketing all have a cost. And finally, there's an important distinction between discomfort and danger . Something feeling uncomfortable doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't do it. Sometimes discomfort is simply evidence that you're doing something you haven't mastered yet. If you haven't listened to Episode 433, Part One, you can go back and hear the first 12 reasons, but you don't need to listen to the episodes in order. Together, the two episodes give you 25 reasons podiatrists play it safe and plenty to think about regarding where you might be playing it safe yourself. What if your podiatry degree could give you more than a career? What if it could give you a completely different life? Australian podiatrist Jason McAninly decided to find out. Jason left Melbourne to live and work in Bermuda for Bermuda Podiatry , and what started as an overseas job opportunity has turned into something much bigger. He’s become part of the local community, played cricket, travelled regularly to New York and Europe, attended international conferences, built new professional connections and discovered opportunities that simply wouldn't have appeared if he'd stayed home. And here's the interesting part: Bermuda wasn't even the original plan. In this episode, Jason and I talk about what it's really like to pack up your podiatry career and take it overseas. We discuss the realities of working as a podiatrist in Bermuda, the differences in healthcare, the cost of living, the lifestyle, the surprisingly strong similarities between Bermudian and Australian culture, and why working overseas has been one of the best decisions Jason has ever made. We also get into something much bigger than Bermuda. How many podiatrists are limiting their careers simply because they're afraid to leave what's familiar? Your podiatry degree doesn't have to lock you into one clinic, one town or even one country. There are opportunities for podiatrists all over the world, and sometimes saying yes to something unexpected can introduce you to people, places and possibilities you never knew existed. Jason's experience is also a great lesson in becoming part of the community instead of simply living in it. From cricket and community events to a 40-kilometre fundraising walk across Bermuda, he hasn't just moved overseas for work. He's built a life there. We also talk about: Why Jason originally wanted to work overseas and how Bermuda eventually appeared on his radar What podiatry is really like in Bermuda compared with Australia Why podiatrists in Bermuda need to become more of a clinical “one-stop shop” The opportunities an Australian podiatry qualification can create internationally Why Jason believes working overseas is a no-brainer if the right opportunity comes along Why community involvement transformed Jason's experience of Bermuda How international conferences and travel have expanded his professional network Why sometimes the best career decision starts with saying, “Why the hell not?” If you've ever wondered what it would be like to work overseas, you're early in your podiatry career, you're feeling stuck where you are, or you simply need a reminder of how many possibilities your qualification can create, this episode might have you looking at a world map very differently. Your podiatry degree isn't just a qualification. It could also be your passport to the world. If you'd like to learn more about working in Bermuda, please reach out to Bermuda Podiatry . Why do some podiatrists find it so difficult to try something new, especially once they’ve been in the profession for a few years? In this episode, I explore 12 reasons podiatrists can become reluctant to step outside their comfort zone. I cover everything from fear of looking incompetent and wasting money, to patient rejection, criticism from colleagues, perfectionism, technology, and even the fear of success. I also discuss why being comfortable can become one of the biggest obstacles to growth. Your practice might be doing okay, the bills are being paid, and patients keep coming through the door, but does that mean you should keep doing everything the same way? Every successful treatment or skill you use today was once something you didn't know how to do. You learnt biomechanics, nail surgery, orthotics, shockwave and other clinical skills. So why should learning marketing, AI, leadership, public speaking or new business skills be any different? Sometimes the skill isn't the obstacle. It's being willing to become a beginner again. In this episode, Dr Michael Filosi shares the remarkable journey of transforming one of Adelaide's most run-down dental practices, with possums in the roof, outdated paper appointment books and years of neglect, into one of its largest and most successful practices. Where others looked and said no, Michael could see the future potential. We also discuss: The importance of buying into a business the right way; that's any healthcare business. Not being greedy when you buy and when you sell. Creating systems that you can scale Building a high-performing team that believes in your vision. Removing yourself as the key person in the business. Why every practice owner should be thinking about their exit strategy long before they plan to sell. Whether you're considering buying your first practice, expanding your current business or preparing for an eventual exit in the next five or ten years, this conversation is packed with practical advice that applies to every podiatrist and healthcare business owner. Michael's story proves that success isn't about finding the perfect practice. It's about recognising potential, making smart decisions and having the courage to build something extraordinary. Most podiatrists assume they're easy to find online, but are they really? In this episode, I sit down with my good friend and co-host of the Podiatry Marketing Podcast, Dr Jim McDannald, to discuss the Practice Visibility Scorecard, a free tool designed to show podiatrists how visible their clinic actually is online. We explain why searching for your own clinic on your own computer can give you a misleading picture, how Google's personalised search results work, and why your rankings may be completely different just a few streets away. Jim also shares how the scorecard analyses local search visibility, compares your clinic with nearby competitors, identifies growth opportunities, and highlights surrounding demographics that could influence your future marketing decisions. Whether you're planning to grow your current practice, open a satellite clinic, or simply want to understand where your next patients are coming from, this episode will give you practical insights you can apply immediately. Why do so many podiatrists hesitate to increase their fees, even when they know they provide exceptional care? In this solo episode, Tyson Franklin explores one of the biggest pricing myths in podiatry: the belief that charging appropriately will damage referral relationships with doctors and other health professionals. Drawing on a real conversation with a former patient, Tyson explains why undercharging has very little to do with money and everything to do with seeking approval. He discusses the hidden costs of pricing too low, how fear of judgement influences business decisions, and why the best referrers care far more about patient outcomes than your fee schedule. If you've ever questioned your pricing or worried about what others might think if you charged more, this episode will challenge your thinking and encourage you to value your expertise with confidence. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why fear of judgement influences pricing decisions • What professional referrers actually care about • The hidden costs of chronic undercharging • Why patients associate value with confidence, not low prices • How to price your services based on value instead of approval Additional Show Notes are available on the Podiatry Legends Podcast website. Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing allied health, but can it do more than simply write clinical notes? In this sponsored episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast , Tyson Franklin speaks with physiotherapist and PREVE founder Caelum Trott about how AI is evolving into a powerful tool for improving patient engagement, treatment compliance and clinic performance. Rather than focusing solely on documentation, PREVE helps practitioners create personalised treatment plans, exercise programs, patient education and follow-up communication that keep patients engaged throughout their entire treatment journey. Caelum explains why patient drop-off remains one of the biggest challenges facing allied health clinics, how AI can help practitioners save valuable administration time, and why improving patient outcomes ultimately leads to stronger business performance. If you're curious about the future of AI in podiatry and allied health, this conversation offers practical insights into what's possible today and what's coming next. To learn more about PREVE, please visit: https://preve.co In this episode, we discuss: • Why AI scribes are only the beginning • The hidden cost of patient drop-off (It can be substantial) • How better patient engagement improves clinical outcomes • Saving one to two hours of administration every day • Using AI to support recent graduates and experienced practitioners alike • Integrating AI with existing practice management software • The future of patient communication and automated follow-up As always, thank you for supporting the Podiatry Legends Podcast. Some podcast conversations stand the test of time, and this is definitely one of them. Originally recorded in 2018 for my previous podcast, It's No Secret with Dr T , this discussion with marketing strategist Patrick McFadden is packed with practical business wisdom that's just as relevant today. Patrick explains why "Rise and Grind" isn't about working longer hours. It's about focusing on meaningful work, bringing value to every interaction, understanding how markets evolve, and building a business around a clear strategy rather than endless activity. We also dive into networking, delegation, measuring results, and why diagnosis should always come before prescription in business. Whether you're growing a podiatry clinic or any service business, this episode will challenge the way you think about marketing, leadership and creating long-term success. Starting your own podiatry business is exciting, rewarding... and at times, overwhelming. In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I welcome back Dr Jackson Tisdell, who first appeared on the show as a new graduate in Episode 22. Fast forward a few years, and Jackson has now spent his first 12 months building Spring Podiatry in Melton, Victoria. Because everything is still fresh, Jackson shares the real lessons he's learned along the way. There's no sugar-coating, just honest insights into what worked, what surprised him, and what he'd do again. Together we discuss: Why delegating sooner creates more freedom When it's worth paying for quality instead of buying cheap How to take calculated risks without gambling your future Why difficult conversations rarely get easier by delaying them The importance of focusing on one marketing strategy at a time How mentors and coaches can help you make better decisions Simple ways to understand and manage cash flow Why positioning yourself as a premium provider matters How niching your services attracts the right patients Why planning holidays before you think you need them is essential Whether you're dreaming of opening your own clinic, have recently taken the leap, or have been in business for years, you'll find practical advice throughout this conversation. Owning a podiatry practice doesn't automatically make you a great leader. In this solo episode, Tyson E. Franklin explores a topic that's rarely discussed but incredibly important: toxic leadership. Most practice owners don't intentionally become difficult bosses. More often than not, stress, long hours, and the pressures of running a business slowly change how they communicate with their team. In This Episode You'll Learn Why good people sometimes become poor leaders. The difference between demanding leadership and toxic behaviour. How stress changes the way we communicate. Why staff leave emotionally before they resign. The hidden financial cost of poor leadership. Five simple ways to become a better boss. How to create a workplace people recommend to others. Tyson also discusses the behaviours that quietly damage workplace culture, why good staff often leave emotionally long before they hand in their resignation, and the practical steps every practice owner can take to become the kind of leader people genuinely enjoy working with. Hi, I'm Tyson Franklin, and in this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I welcome back Dr Ben Pearl from Arlington Foot & Ankle for his fourth appearance on the show. As always, our conversation takes a few unexpected turns, from patient psychology, healthcare challenges, what podiatrists can learn from businesses outside our profession, and a few movie references. Ben shares some real-world experiences from working in the United States healthcare system, including the challenges of helping uninsured patients and the emotional toll that can come from going above and beyond for someone who may not appreciate your efforts. We discuss the importance of recognising fear in patients and their families, setting boundaries, and learning how to read the room during difficult consultations. We also explore the concept of "shape-shifting" in practice, being flexible enough to adapt your communication, treatment recommendations, and approach to suit each patient. Along the way, we dive into lessons from the Good Feet Store, why scripts matter, how patient experience influences outcomes, and why reputation remains one of the most powerful marketing tools a podiatrist can build. Have you ever walked into a business and instantly felt welcome, valued, and confident that you were in the right place? In this solo episode, I explore how podiatry clinics can create a memorable first impression that goes far beyond a friendly smile at reception. From the moment a patient walks through your front door, every interaction shapes their perception of your professionalism, care, and expertise. I share practical strategies that any clinic can implement to elevate the patient experience, including creating a seamless arrival process, improving the waiting room environment, training reception teams to communicate with confidence, and adding small but powerful touches that patients will remember long after they leave. The best part is that most of these ideas are inexpensive, easy to implement, and can make a significant difference to patient satisfaction and retention. If you're a podiatrist, clinic owner, or healthcare professional looking to stand out in a competitive market, this episode will give you plenty of ideas to take back to your practice. Sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest impact, and in this episode, I'll show you how to turn an ordinary patient arrival into an experience worth talking about. What separates a superstar employee from someone who simply fills a position? According to performance expert Jay Henderson from Real Talent Hiring , the answer has less to do with personality and more to do with how people think. In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, Jay shares his unique approach to recruitment and explains why understanding a person's decision-making process can reveal far more about future performance than traditional behavioural assessments. We discuss the limitations of popular personality profiling tools, why many business owners repeatedly make poor hiring decisions, and how self-image can influence not only individual performance but also the growth of an entire business. One of the most fascinating parts of the conversation explores the idea that people don't change nearly as much as we often expect. For employers, this has significant implications when hiring staff based on who they might become rather than who they already are. Jay also shares practical recruitment strategies that podiatry clinic owners can implement immediately, including creating better job descriptions, developing hiring scorecards, and maintaining a constant recruitment mindset. Whether you're looking to employ your first receptionist, your next associate podiatrist, or a future practice manager, this episode will help you think differently about hiring and leadership. What if a few simple changes to the words you use could dramatically improve patient compliance, treatment acceptance, and communication? In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, Tyson E. Franklin welcomes back a good friend and communication expert, Dave Frees. Dave has trained lawyers, business leaders, special forces personnel, interrogators, and high-performance professionals in the art of influence and communication. Recorded in Tyson's backyard in Cairns, this conversation explores ten powerful language patterns inspired by the work of renowned psychiatrist and hypnotherapist Dr Milton Erickson. Before anyone panics, this isn't about manipulation for manipulation's sake. As Dave explains, all communication influences people. The real question is whether that influence is being used ethically and with positive intent. In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, Tyson E. Franklin speaks with sports therapist Olivia Brown about integrity in healthcare and why honesty, ethical decision-making, and staying within your scope of practice matter more than ever. The conversation was sparked after both attended a conference presentation that focused heavily on profits rather than patient outcomes, leading to a deeper discussion about ethics, professional behaviour, referrals, education, and building long-term trust with patients. Olivia shares powerful real-world examples about referring patients when appropriate, avoiding the temptation to oversell treatments, and why leading with integrity ultimately creates better outcomes for patients and practitioners alike. In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I speak with Malaysian Podiatrist Patricia Ting, who studied podiatry in Australia, gained six years of clinical experience, and returned home to Malaysia to establish KL Foot Specialist Podiatry , one of the country’s few private podiatry clinics. Patricia shares what it was like growing up in a family of healthcare professionals, why she chose podiatry over medicine, and how reading my book, It’s No Secret… There’s Money in Podiatry helped guide her through the process of opening her clinic. With a population of more than 36 million and only a handful of podiatry clinics, Malaysia presents enormous opportunities for podiatrists willing to educate the public, build relationships with medical practitioners, and raise awareness of the profession. We also discuss: The differences between practising in Australia and Malaysia Podiatry Professionalism Why she invested in shockwave, laser, gait analysis, and plantar pressure technology from day one The importance of hiring the right receptionist Why Malaysia is an exciting destination for podiatrists looking for international opportunities This episode is a fantastic reminder that podiatry can take you anywhere in the world, and that with courage, planning, and persistence, you can build a thriving clinic in almost any market. In this episode of the Podiatry Legends Podcast, I speak with Victorian podiatrist Edward Clinch, who examined the football boots on the market and believed AFL Footy Players deserved something better. As health professionals, we regularly see the injuries and discomfort caused by footwear that lacks adequate support. Rather than accepting the status quo, Ed decided to design his own football boot from scratch. What began as a simple idea turned into a nearly ten-year journey involving industrial design, international travel, multiple manufacturers, and a substantial personal investment. Ed shares how he developed Clinch Boots , including the podiatry principles built into the design: a 7 mm heel raise, a supportive arch insole, a firm heel counter, and improved torsional stability. These features are intended to provide greater comfort and support for AFL players, while also having potential applications in rugby, soccer, and other field sports. This conversation is about much more than footwear. It is about persistence, innovation, and the willingness to solve a problem rather than complain about it. If you have ever had an idea for a product, wanted to branch beyond clinical practice, or wondered what it takes to turn expertise into a tangible business, this episode will inspire you. The debate about whether Australian podiatrists should use the title Dr regularly resurfaces within the profession, usually at least once per year. In this solo episode, I explore the psychology, professional identity, and patient perception behind the discussion. I also examine common arguments raised in the debate, including concerns about academic qualifications, potential patient confusion, and the influence of professional hierarchy. I also highlight the important distinction between research expertise and clinical experience. By introducing concepts such as The Authority Illusion and The Three Types of Authority in Healthcare, this episode offers a balanced perspective on how authority is perceived by patients and what ultimately matters most in clinical practice. Key Takeaways • The Dr title debate resurfaces regularly within podiatry. • In Australia, podiatrists can legally use the title Dr if they clearly identify themselves as podiatrists. • Much of the debate centres around professional identity rather than legality. • A PhD represents research expertise, not necessarily clinical expertise. • Clinical excellence develops through patient experience and repetition. • Patients often judge authority using visual and psychological signals. • Titles function as credibility shortcuts in decision-making. • Healthcare authority comes from academic, clinical, and perceived sources. • First impressions influence patient choices, but clinical results build long-term trust. • Professional behaviour and respect within the profession ultimately matter more than titles. This week's episode is a personal one. After experiencing a lower back injury with severe sciatic symptoms, I was forced to step away from working, cancel commitments, and rethink a lot of what I thought I had under control. In this episode, I share five key lessons that came from that experience, covering empathy, financial protection, planning ahead, and the importance of taking action before it's too late. What made this experience even more challenging was the complete loss of independence. Something as simple as walking a few steps, sitting in a chair, or driving a car became almost impossible. I had to rely heavily on my wife to get to appointments and manage day-to-day tasks, which I'd never had to do before. That feeling of helplessness really hits you, especially when you're used to being active, working, and in control of your schedule. It also forced me to cancel several commitments, including coaching calls, podcast interviews, and even a speaking engagement in Canada that I had been looking forward to for months. That was a tough pill to swallow. But in hindsight, having that time blocked out was a blessing. It gave me the space to focus on recovery, attend appointments, and reflect on what had happened without the added pressure of trying to push through it. Throughout this process, I also experienced very different levels of care from healthcare professionals. Some were exceptional, showing genuine empathy and understanding, while others felt distant and disengaged. That contrast really reinforced how important communication, tone, and presence are when working with patients. These experiences don't just apply to podiatry; they apply to every healthcare professional and business owner. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about clinical skills or business strategy. It's about how you show up, how you prepare for the unexpected, and how you treat people when they need you most.
