On 12 August 1966, three Metropolitan Police officers were carrying out their duties on a quiet street near Wormwood Scrubs prison in west London. Within minutes, all three would be dead. The cold-blooded killings of Detective Sergeant Christopher Head, Detective Constable David Wombwell and Police Constable Geoffrey Fox sent shockwaves across Britain, sparking one of the largest manhunts in the history of British policing. But what could have driven someone to murder three police officers in broad daylight? Who was responsible? And how would the events of that summer's afternoon leave a legacy that would endure for decades? Sixty years on, this week on Seeing Red , we revisit the shocking Shepherd's Bush murders, a case that changed British policing forever. On 1 October 2017, a gunman opened fire on thousands of people attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, committing the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in modern US history. Nine years on, we’re returning to one of the most devastating cases we’ve ever covered for the latest instalment of Seeing Red: Second Look. Originally released in 2022, Mark recorded this episode just days after returning from Las Vegas, where a visit to the Mandalay Bay hotel inspired him to explore the events of that night. In a newly recorded introduction, he reflects on visiting the resort and the strange normality of a place where there was little visible acknowledgement of the horror that had unfolded there just a few years earlier. The episode also gives a voice to some of those who survived the attack, including stories of extraordinary courage, resilience and, in one particularly tragic case, an almost unimaginable twist of fate. Whether you heard this episode when it was first released or are discovering the case with us for the first time, this is Seeing Red: Second Look — The Mandalay Bay Massacre. This episode was originally released in January 2022 and is presented largely in its original form, with a newly recorded introduction. This week, we’re venturing away from our usual true crime territory for something a little different. Just as we’ve previously explored disasters including the Great Smog of London and the Titanic , this week Bethan takes us deep underground for three extraordinary stories of caving expeditions that went terribly wrong. Beginning here in the UK, before travelling to the United States and finally Thailand, these are stories of exploration, extreme environments and the terrifying reality of becoming trapped far beneath the surface. The first two cases take us to some particularly dark places, involving desperate rescue attempts and devastating consequences, while our final story became an international race against time that gripped the world. This week on Seeing Red… we’re going underground. Join our Patreon Find us on YouTube Buy Me a Coffee Visit our website Theme music by Dead Dog in Black Bag Got 5 mins? In October 2022, an emergency call brought police and paramedics to a home in Deptford, south-east London. What they found inside would lead to a deeply disturbing investigation. At the centre of the case was Kelly Neill, a former stroke nurse and devoted mother whose life had changed dramatically in the years leading up to that October day. But as investigators began to piece together what had been happening inside the property, troubling questions emerged about Kelly’s final months — and about the people she had depended upon most. This week on Seeing Red , we tell the story of Kelly Neill: who she was, how her life changed, and the disturbing circumstances that would ultimately bring police to her home. Seeing Red returns for Season 16 with the shocking murder of Detective Constable Stephen Oake, a Greater Manchester Police officer killed in the line of duty. On 14 January 2003, 40-year-old Stephen Oake joined fellow officers on a raid at a flat in Crumpsall, Manchester. What should have been a carefully controlled police operation descended into violence when they encountered Kamel Bourgass, a man linked to a major terrorism investigation. In 2006, nurse Ben Geen was convicted of murdering two patients and seriously harming 15 others while working at Horton General Hospital in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Prosecutors said Geen deliberately injected patients with potentially lethal drugs before reveling in the medical emergencies that followed. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum of 30 years. Geen has always maintained his innocence. This week, Seeing Red revisits one of the most fascinating and unsettling medical murder cases we've covered. Before the original episode begins, Mark returns with a new 10–15 minute update. With the Lucy Letby case continuing to dominate headlines and raise difficult questions about how suspected medical murders are identified and investigated, Mark looks again at the evidence against Geen — and asks whether his conviction still feels as compelling as it once did. He also explores the striking parallels between Geen and Letby; why hospital managers can appear reluctant to involve the police even when staff suspect a colleague may be harming patients; the extraordinary coincidence involving Geen and an actress playing a killer nurse in Holby City ; and whether Mark's growing doubts about the Letby convictions have made him question Ben Geen's guilt too. Plus, an unfortunate encounter between a syringe and Geen's jacket prompts Mark to revisit some highly questionable medical terminology from the original episode. The original Seeing Red episode then follows, newly remastered and lightly edited. Ben Geen: guilty beyond reasonable doubt — or could one of Britain's most notorious killer nurses actually be innocent? In 2008, nurse Colin Norris was convicted of murdering four elderly patients and attempting to murder another at two hospitals in Leeds. Prosecutors said Norris deliberately injected vulnerable women with insulin, causing sudden and unexplained episodes of severe hypoglycaemia. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years. Norris has always maintained his innocence. This week, Seeing Red revisits one of Britain's most disturbing — and increasingly controversial — medical murder cases. Before the original episode begins, Mark returns with a new 10–15 minute update. With the Lucy Letby case continuing to raise difficult questions about medical evidence, statistics and the investigation of unexpected hospital deaths, Mark looks again at the case against Norris — including the evidence that once appeared to make his guilt overwhelming, and the developments that have since led some experts to question whether the women he was convicted of harming were murdered at all. He also revisits Norris's deeply troubling behaviour away from the alleged murders: the personality traits identified following his arrest, his extraordinary treatment of his own cat, and the chilling comments he made while under suspicion. And if some of the medical evidence against Norris is now open to challenge, how much weight should we give to behaviour that seems almost impossible to explain away? Plus, Mark considers what the cases of Norris, Ben Geen and Lucy Letby can tell us about one of the most difficult questions in modern criminal justice: how do you prove that a healthcare professional is deliberately killing patients when the alleged murders can look remarkably like natural medical emergencies? The original Seeing Red episode then follows, newly remastered and lightly edited. Colin Norris was convicted as one of Britain's most notorious killer nurses. Nearly two decades later, is his guilt still beyond reasonable doubt? Join our Patreon Find us on YouTube Buy Me a Coffee Visit our website Theme music by Dead Dog in Black Bag Got 5 mins? On 2 August 1973, thousands of holidaymakers were enjoying an evening at Summerland, a vast state-of-the-art leisure complex on the seafront in Douglas, Isle of Man. Within minutes, it had become the scene of one of the deadliest fires in modern British history. What began as a small fire outside the building spread with terrifying speed, fuelled by highly combustible materials used in Summerland's construction. As flames engulfed the complex, families desperately tried to escape. By the end of the night, 50 people had lost their lives and scores more had been injured. But the Summerland disaster was more than a tragic accident. Questions would soon emerge about the design of the building, fire precautions, evacuation procedures and a catalogue of decisions that had left thousands of people dangerously vulnerable. This week on Seeing Red , we revisit the devastating Summerland fire: how a holiday attraction billed as a futuristic paradise became an inferno, the lives lost that night, the investigation that followed, the eye witness testimony from survivors, and why one of the worst peacetime fire disasters in British history has largely faded from public memory. http://www.youtube.com/@seeingredtruecrimepodcast www.patreon.com/seeingredpodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/seeingredtw www.seeingredpodcast.co.uk Theme music arranged and composed by Holly-Jane Shears: www.soundcloud.com/DeadDogInBlackBag Join our Patreon Find us on YouTube Buy Me a Coffee Visit our website Theme music by Dead Dog in Black Bag Got 5 mins? On 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was flying from London to New York when a bomb exploded on board as the aircraft passed over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. All 259 passengers and crew were killed, along with 11 people on the ground. With 270 lives lost, the Lockerbie bombing remains the deadliest terrorist attack ever carried out on British soil. But nearly four decades later, the story of Lockerbie is far from over. As the case returns to the headlines and a new trial approaches in the United States, we revisit one of the most significant and complex stories ever covered on Seeing Red. Who was responsible for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103? How did investigators piece together an extraordinary international investigation from the wreckage scattered across hundreds of square miles? And why, 38 years later, do questions surrounding Lockerbie continue to provoke controversy? As Seeing Red marks its eighth anniversary, we're looking back at some of the cases that have stayed with us long after we first covered them — beginning with a tragedy that changed hundreds of families, a small Scottish town, and the history of international terrorism forever. This is Lockerbie. http://www.youtube.com/@seeingredtruecrimepodcast www.patreon.com/seeingredpodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/seeingredtw www.seeingredpodcast.co.uk Theme music arranged and composed by Holly-Jane Shears: www.soundcloud.com/DeadDogInBlackBag Join our Patreon Find us on YouTube Buy Me a Coffee Visit our website Theme music by Dead Dog in Black Bag Got 5 mins? This week on Seeing Red, we investigate the chilling case of Adam Hall – a man whose crimes would leave a devastating trail across the North East of England. Behind closed doors, Hall was hiding a secret from the men he met. But as disturbing allegations began to emerge, investigators would uncover something far more calculated – and far more horrifying – than anyone had initially imagined. What followed was an extraordinary investigation involving multiple victims, allegations spanning years, and the discovery that Hall had been warned about the potentially devastating consequences of his actions. Just how many lives had he changed? How much did he know? And, most chillingly of all, why did he do it? This is the shocking story of Adam Hall – and the investigation that exposed the truth.
