The IEA now forecasts EVs will account for 29% of global sales in 2026, driven by growth beyond China and the US in markets like Australia, Brazil, India, Korea and Vietnam, though China's EV sales are expected to stagnate year-on-year for the first time this decade while still representing over 60% of new cars sold there. EUROPEAN BEV SHARE HITS RECORD IN JUNE European new car registrations rose 13% year-on-year in June with BEV registrations climbing 50.7% to capture a record 25.7% market share of 359,300 units. Combustion vehicles fell 13.6% to 27% market share, while Tesla led EV rankings but growth broadened across Renault, BMW, Skoda, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Volvo and BYD. RIVIAN BEATS, BUT R2 COSTS MOUNT Rivian posted Q2 2026 revenue of $1.658 billion with record gross profit of $179 million and 11% gross margin, improving for five consecutive quarters, but the R2 mid-size SUV ramp added $100 million in extra costs. The company raised full-year delivery guidance to 65,000-70,000 vehicles and narrowed adjusted EBITDA loss guidance to $1.8-2.0 billion, requiring roughly 42,000-47,000 deliveries in the second half. RIVIAN SEES STRONG EARLY R2 CONVERSION Rivian reported R2 Launch Edition reservation-to-order conversion is running meaningfully above expectations, signaling strong demand at the premium price point. The company expects broader R2 trim availability in early 2027, which could drive better momentum when lower-priced versions become available. VW URGES FAST EU TARIFFS ON CHINESE PHEVS VW Group CEO Oliver Blume called for the EU to quickly apply 35% tariffs on Chinese plug-in hybrids similar to those on Chinese battery electric vehicles, citing undercutting of European car makers. Chinese brand sales in Europe rose 101% in H1 2026 to 685,990 units with 9.5% market share, up from 5% a year earlier, with BYD models dominating the PHEV top sellers list. DENZA OPENS UK BAO 5 ORDERS DENZA opened UK orders for the BAO 5 plug-in hybrid SUV priced from £69,500 to £78,880, featuring a dual-motor system delivering 544PS combined power with 62 miles of electric range and up to 100kW DC charging. The entry Elegance trim includes premium features like a 15.6-inch central screen with Google, leather upholstery, panoramic roof and a 18-speaker Devialet audio system. MERCEDES FACES YEARS OF CHINA PRICE PRESSURE Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius warned that China's EV pricing war will persist for years as Chinese brands like BYD push aggressively into the luxury segment, challenging models such as the S-Class and G-Class. Mercedes recorded a 30% second-quarter sales drop in China, though the company is cutting costs and maintaining strength in its top-end luxury and AMG segments. GENESIS PRICES GV60 MAGMA AT $71,495 Genesis priced its first performance EV, the GV60 Magma, at $71,495 with deliveries starting in select US states, targeting Mercedes-AMG and BMW M buyers with 600hp in normal use and 641hp in Boost Mode for under four-second 0-60mph acceleration. The car uses an 84kWh battery with 800V architecture enabling 10-80% charging in about 20 minutes and features an electronic limited-slip differential, Drift Mode and simulated engine sounds. CHINESE TRUCK MAKERS USE EUROPE'S FACTORIES Chinese truck makers SuperPanther and Sinotruk are entering Europe through contract manufacturing at existing plants rather than building new factories, using the semi-knocked-down method to speed market entry and reduce costs. Steyr Automotive in Austria now assembles SuperPanther's eTopas 600 and Sinotruk's vehicles, with plans to expand to cab production and painting as volumes rise. VATTENFALL TESTS OPEN EV CHARGING BAYS Vattenfall InCharge is piloting 300 public chargers in North Brabant and Limburg from August 2026 to January 2027, splitting them between 150 open bays for all vehicles and 150 standard bays reserved for EVs to test faster deployment by removing exclusive EV parking restrictions. The trial addresses an administrative bottleneck rather than a technical one, testing whether chargers can be installed faster without requiring traffic rulings and public objection periods. MAN STARTS MCS-READY ELECTRIC TRUCK PRODUCTION MAN started series production of MCS-ready electric trucks, the eTGX and eTGS, at its Munich plant as the first series-produced European electric trucks supporting Megawatt Charging System at up to 750kW via MCS. With configurations of 534kWh or 623kWh usable capacity, the trucks achieve 20-80% charges in under 30-40 minutes, fitting within legally required driver breaks for long-haul use. NEXT MX-5 READIES FOR ELECTRIC FUTURE Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro said the next MX-5 Miata will be designed with electrification in mind, marking a shift from earlier statements emphasizing the internal combustion engine as the current path forward. Patents from 2025 show Mazda exploring batteries running through the transmission tunnel to support a flexible chassis, with the company aiming to preserve the Miata's core character during its transition to electric power.

Built on the 800-volt MMA platform, the GLA offers up to 657 km WLTP range, 320 kW charging, and starts at €48,599 as Mercedes' cheapest electric SUV. FERRARI LUCE BEATS 2026 SALES TARGET Ferrari's electric Luce hit its 2026 sales target of nearly 500 units within two months of its May launch, despite public backlash, an 8% share price drop, and the departure of marketing chief Enrico Galliera. Demand proved strongest in China, where its 88-unit allocation sold out at roughly $589,000, with Ferrari targeting 2,500 total Luce sales by 2030. RENAULT PROFITS BEAT ON EVS AND CUTS Renault posted a 5.2% operating margin and 9.5% revenue growth in the first half of 2026, beating forecasts through cost cuts and a stronger EV lineup, outperforming Audi and Mercedes-Benz margins for the period. CEO Francois Provost is pushing cheaper EVs like the €19,490 Twingo and €25,000 R5 to defend market share against BYD, Opel and Citroën, while targeting €400 in annual per-vehicle cost savings. WALMART BUILDS OUT US FAST CHARGING Walmart has opened about 46 high-speed public charging stations with 380 cords across roughly 326 of its 4,600 US stores, ranking second only to Tesla in network expansion during the second quarter. The retailer is leaning on its vast footprint—90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a store—to combine charging dwell time with shopping, potentially lifting store sales by about 5%. CANADA'S FAST CHARGERS OUTPACE DEMAND Canada's DC fast-charger utilization fell to just 9.5% in Q2 2026, down from 11.3% in Q1 and well below the 15-20% operators typically need to break even, trailing the US average of 15.8%. Paren's data, covering nearly 10,000 ports, shows profitability is highly site-specific, prompting calls for demand-led charger siting and better reliability. FORMER VW ENGINEERS CHARGED OVER RIVIAN DEAL TRADES Prosecutors charged former Volkswagen engineers Michael Stamp and Michael Plank with insider trading ahead of VW's $5 billion Rivian joint venture announcement in June 2024, which sent Rivian shares up 23%. Stamp allegedly made $250,000 and Plank $50,000, with Plank also accused of tipping a family member who made $12,000, while incriminating searches about insider trading laws feature in the case. IONIQ 3 OPENS UK AND EUROPE ORDERS Hyundai's new IONIQ 3 electric hatchback has drawn more customer interest than any previous Hyundai launch, debuting at Goodwood with UK pricing expected under £25,000 and offering up to 308 miles of range from a 61 kWh battery. Built on the E-GMP platform for the European market, the compact IONIQ 3 is not planned for a US launch. KIA COMMITS $649 MILLION TO MEXICO EVS Kia will invest $649 million in its Pesquería, Mexico plant to begin producing the EV3 compact SUV starting August 4, marking its first EV production in the country. The move, tied to Mexico's Plan México initiative, is expected to create 500 jobs this year and 1,500 by 2030, while helping Kia navigate USMCA trade rules and tariffs. V2G COULD DWARF MANAGED CHARGING VALUE A General Motors-commissioned E3 study found vehicle-to-grid technology could deliver five to 15 times more value per EV than one-way managed charging, totaling roughly $7 billion nationwide by 2030, with the strongest returns in California, ERCOT, and the Pacific Northwest. GM already has 250,000 bidirectional-capable vehicles on the road and is pushing utilities to speed up V2G tariffs and approvals, including a plan to use 52,000 vehicles to balance PG&E's grid by 2030. SC01 SET FOR UK ARRIVAL IN 2027 Small Sports Car Company will bring its China-built SC01 lightweight electric sportscar to the UK, featuring 429 bhp, a 1,365 kg curb weight, a 2.9-second 0-62 mph time, and a 500 km CLTC range. UK demonstration cars arrive in Q4 2026, with right-hand-drive customer cars following from April 2027, though pricing has not yet been announced.

The Neue Klasse flagship uses sixth-generation eDrive tech and a 108.7 kWh battery, charges at up to 400 kW to add 373 km (231 miles) in ten minutes, and starts at €73,925 ($85,200) in Germany for the iX3 50 xDrive with up to 805 km (500 miles) of WLTP range. BMW TO BUILD IX5 BATTERY PACKS IN SOUTH CAROLINA BMW will begin mass production of iX5 high-voltage battery packs in December at its new Plant Woodruff in South Carolina, near Plant Spartanburg where the iX5 is assembled, keeping pack assembly in-house to build a local supply chain, cut geopolitical risk and reduce logistics costs. AESC, now majority-owned by China's Envision Group, supplies the 120 mm cylindrical cells — which deliver 30% more usable energy than the iX3's 95 mm cells — giving the US iX5 a 144 kWh pack (141 kWh in Europe), an estimated 435 miles of range, 460 kW peak charging and a 10-80% charge in 22 minutes. ZEEKR 9X ARRIVES IN EUROPE Zeekr has launched the 9X Ultra 6-Seater in Europe as a luxury SUV and its first Super Hybrid, pairing a 900V dual-motor system with a 2.0-litre turbo engine used purely as a generator for 897 horsepower, 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, up to 737 km of range and a 10-80% DC charge in 9.5 minutes. Designed in Gothenburg with adaptive air suspension and CDC dampers, it offers reclining, massaging first and second rows, an onboard refrigerator, a ceiling-mounted 17-inch 3K OLED screen and a 32-speaker Naim system, and marks Zeekr's fifth European model in three years across 16 markets. SK ON AND FACTORIAL TARGET SOLID-STATE SCALE SK On and Factorial Energy have partnered to push solid-state batteries towards production, combining Factorial's FEST cell technology with SK On's manufacturing network to tackle the scaling problem that has held back a chemistry promising higher energy density, longer range and faster charging than lithium-ion. Factorial is already testing cells in North America and has integrated them into Stellantis' Dodge Charger Daytona prototype, claiming 375 Wh/kg energy density, while its work with Mercedes-Benz produced a modified EQS that covered over 745 miles on a single charge. TESLA SHIP LOAD SETS SHANGHAI RECORD The Chinese-built car carrier Glovis Nova loaded 7,738 electric vehicles — all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars — at Shanghai's South Port Terminal on Sunday, a domestic record for a single voyage, and set sail for Zeebrugge, Belgium, for distribution across Europe. The 10,800-car vessel and its sister ship Glovis Leader, which berthed the same day before heading to Busan, were built by Guangzhou Shipyard International, a China State Shipbuilding Corporation subsidiary, and rank among the largest of their kind in the world. NORWAY LEADS GLOBAL EV ADOPTION INDEX Norway tops the latest Global EV Adoption Index with 73.2 out of 100, ahead of Denmark on 64.7 and China on 64.5, backed by a 92% EV sales share in 2024, 32 public chargers per 1,000 battery vehicles and 41.9% fast-charger coverage. Denmark climbed 40 percentage points since 2020 to a 56% sales share with 73 chargers per 1,000 EVs, China recorded a 48% share and 103 chargers per 1,000 vehicles, and Tesla led brand interest across 75 countries with 71.6 million Google queries in the past year. MITSUBISHI RETURNS TO NORTH AMERICA WITH LEAF EV Mitsubishi will re-enter the North American EV market with the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, on sale in the US and Canada by late summer or early fall of 2026 through around 300 dealerships. Billed as all-new, it is in fact based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf via the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, sharing its 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery, native NACS port, Supercharger access and 150 kW charging (10-80% in about 35 minutes) beneath new fascias, lighting and alloys, with range and pricing still undisclosed. LEPAS L8 TARGETS EUROPE ON VALUE Chery has launched the Lepas L8, a D-segment family SUV priced from £34,900 to £37,900, using the upmarket Lepas brand to challenge BMW and Volkswagen on space, equipment and price alongside stablemates such as the Jaecoo 7, Omoda 7 and Chery Tiggo 8. Power comes from Chery's Super Hybrid system combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and 18.4 kWh battery, while the cabin offers an upmarket feel, generous tech, vast rear legroom and headroom despite the panoramic roof, and a 507-litre boot comparable to a Nissan Qashqai's. KERBSIDE CHARGING SEARCHES JUMP AS EV COST SCRUTINY GROWS Vertu reports that searches for "kerbside EV charging" rose 125% over the past three months while searches for "cheapest EV tariff" climbed 173%, suggesting buyers are weighing access and running costs together before switching. The trend matters because government figures published in 2024 found 40% of UK households have no access to off-street parking, leaving a large share of the market dependent on public charging and highly sensitive to the cost of every kilowatt-hour. PRINCE AL WALEED RAISES LUCID STAKE Prince Al Waleed bin Talal's investment office bought just over 19 million Lucid shares, lifting his stake to about 5% according to an SEC filing, with the prince saying he bought when Lucid's market cap was below $2 billion following speculation — since denied by Lucid — about bankruptcy or a take-private deal. The purchase, which Lucid welcomed as an independent vote of confidence, comes as the company restructures under new CEO Silvio Napoli after cutting 18% of staff in June on top of an earlier 12% lay-off, and adds to Saudi ownership alongside the Public Investment Fund's roughly 60% stake held since the 2021 SPAC merger.
3,258 episodes and 3,113 days later. Phew. That first episode went out on 18 January 2018 and nobody heard it. There has been one most days since — through Christmases, a pandemic, becoming a dad and a long list of difficult days when stopping would have been the sensible choice because I was doing this in my 'spare time'. Whatever that is. Following a question I asked you recently and feedback from loads of you, publicly and privately, I've decided that EV News Daily will become ev.news on 1 August. The short version, for anyone who reads no further: the show does not change, the feed does not break, the pledge stays as it is and there is nothing to do. Why the change? The name began as a description. One short podcast, just the news, daily. In 2026 it describes less than it used to. There is now the original global news podcast, Briefly for those in a hurry, China, Specials, the written daily briefing here on Patreon and on evnewsdaily.com when I have time, and a YouTube channel I have restarted several times and never quite got right. But most importantly the show these days is all about explaining what the news means , rather than just repeating headlines. "EV News Daily" is where this came from and in some ways it's tethering me to the past because I'm doing everything the way I used to, plus many new things bolted on. ev.news names a new thing. It is shorter, it survives being said out loud on air, it's better for search when someone looks for 'EV news' and it is easier to remember. The industry has changed beyond recognition in eight years, and this next stage feels like the moment to change with it. For those who asked - yes I have bought the ev.news domain, so the podcast will be matched by an online presence and email addresses. I also have managed to get 'evnews' as a username on Instagram and Threads. On Facebook, X, LinkedIn and more the handle/username will have to stay evnewsdaily, as evnews was taken long ago, but that's not a problem. It also sets an intention. The plan was never to stay a single creator with a microphone — though that remains an accurate description of most days since I quit my job, adopted two kids and started doing this full-time. I have a vision of a team working on this one day - perhaps someone on ev.news China, someone on a newsletter, someone who loves making video. What does it mean? Very little immediate change, and that is deliberate. - * The feed does not change. * Same Patreon, same RSS, same Apple, Spotify, etc. Nothing to re-subscribe to, nothing to fix. New artwork and a new name will turn up first. - * The ad-free feed continues. * Untouched. One of the best benefits of Patreon support and it stays. - * The pledge does not change. * Same tiers, same price, same platform. No restructuring, nothing to re-confirm. - * The show does not change. * Same format, same presenter attempting Chinese names. - * The website will be new. * evnewsdaily.com has never been a work of art but I enjoyed learning Wordpress. ev.news will be built to do the job properly: somewhere audio and video stop fighting each other, and somewhere a future newsletter could live natively. How can you help? A rebrand only makes sense when there is something worth putting a better name on. There is something here worth rebranding because you pay for it. Patreon legends covered the hosting and the kit through the years when the whole audience would have fitted in my spare bedroom, and it turned a hobby that lost money into something that could take itself seriously. There is a rebrand on 1 August because you decided a daily EV podcast was worth a few quid a month. So over the next few days I will share things as I make them: any new artwork, the site as it gets built, the bits that break and all the things I have not worked out yet. You have heard more of this show than anyone else, and you're in the best place to help me course-correct when I get it wrong. Thank you. 3,258 episodes later, I don't know what comes next, but at least the first episode of ev.news won't just be me talking to myself! — Martyn

BEVs beat ICE vehicles in nearly every category, with the widest gap in powertrain satisfaction at 109 points. BYD DRAWS LEVEL WITH TESLA IN EUROPE BYD more than doubled its European market share to 2.4% in the first half of 2026, matching Tesla and edging ahead in absolute registrations with 174,144 vehicles versus Tesla's 170,351. Chery also surged, nearly quadrupling its share to 2.2%, helped by plug-in hybrid models across its Chery, Jaecoo, Omoda and Jetour brands. FORD TURN TO APPLE FOR $30,000 ELECTRIC PICKUP Ford will integrate Apple Maps into its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, using Apple's MapKit for Automotive SDK for navigation and to enhance BlueCruise hands-free driving. The tie-up supports Ford's planned $30,000 midsize electric pickup launching in 2027 as the first UEV-platform vehicle. HONDA EUROPE CHIEF WANTS TOUGHER, BROADER CO2 RULES Honda's European boss Hans De Jaeger called for stricter overall CO2 targets but more flexibility in how automakers meet them, criticizing the EU's narrow focus on battery-electric vehicles. He argued this approach limits customer choice, hurts sales, and contributes to Europe's ageing car fleet, urging room for hybrids, PHEVs and alternative fuels. HONDA INDIA TAKES A PHASED EV LINE Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India said electrification won't suit every market, favoring a multi-fuel, multi-pathway approach with EVs prioritized in dense urban areas with reliable charging. Its new QC3 Family electric scooter, featuring a 3 kWh battery and 145 km range, will launch first as a pilot in select cities rather than nationwide. NEXT EQUINOX EV MAY SHIFT TO BEV-N General Motors is reportedly planning a second-generation Chevy Equinox EV for late 2028 or early 2029, shifting from the BEV3 platform to a new BEV-N architecture alongside a broader electronics overhaul. The current Equinox EV has topped 100,000 U.S. sales through June, and the 2027 model will add a native NACS port for Tesla Superchargers. SPAIN LAUNCHES AUTO+ EV GRANT SCHEME Spain approved Auto+, a new EV subsidy program running through 2030 that replaces MOVES III and covers only vehicles meeting the DGT ZERO emissions label. Grants range up to €4,500 for private buyers' passenger cars and up to €12,000 for vans under the Climate Social Fund, with extra incentives for EU-built models and batteries. VOLKSWAGEN OPENS ID. CROSS ORDERS IN GERMANY Volkswagen opened German orders for the ID. Cross, initially only in a 155 kW front-wheel-drive version with a 52 kWh battery, priced from €34,025 after incentives in Life trim. The cheaper €27,995 Trend base version, positioned above the ID. Polo, won't be available until orders open in mid-October. BMW PITS ELECTRIC M3 AGAINST PETROL BMW plans to develop its next electric M3 alongside a new petrol M3, letting the two compete for the same buyers in what M boss Frank van Meel calls an internal contest. Previewed by the M Concept Neue Klasse, the four-motor electric M3 will prioritize balance and agility over raw power figures.

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/EVNewsDaily EU EV TARGETS COULD SAVE €12 BILLION Meeting the EU's 2030 EV targets covering 35 million battery EVs, 3 million electric vans and 200,000 electric trucks could cut oil imports by about 190 million barrels a year, worth roughly €12 billion, according to E-Mobility Europe and Ember. In 2025 alone, battery EVs already displaced 57 million barrels of oil and kept about €4 billion in European wealth inside the bloc, with the report urging faster electrification alongside a stronger industrial base and energy resilience. FORD AND GEELY PLAN VALENCIA JOINT VENTURE Ford and Geely Auto are forming a Europe-focused joint venture at Ford's Valencia plant in Spain, with Ford owning 66% and Geely 34%, aiming to start operations in early 2027 and begin production in 2028. The venture will build a new compact Bronco, a jointly developed multi-energy crossover, and two Geely-branded electric SUVs, while Kuga production continues uninterrupted during the transition. SENATE BILL COULD BAR MERCEDES FROM US The Senate Commerce Committee advanced bipartisan legislation barring automakers with more than 15% Chinese ownership from selling cars in the US, a threshold Mercedes-Benz would exceed due to nearly 20% Chinese investor ownership. Committee chair Ted Cruz said the bill would effectively ban Mercedes, though the company would have until 2030 to comply or seek a waiver, with the measure still needing full Senate and House approval plus a presidential signature. RIVIAN CUTS BATTERY COST WITH STRUCTURAL PACK Rivian slashed R2 battery-pack cost by switching to large-format 4695 cells, cutting cell count from 7,776 to 776, and making the pack structural to the vehicle floor, saving about 7mm of space used for extra protection and venting. The company made the pack non-serviceable at the cell level to simplify validation, instead consolidating serviceable electronics into a rear-seat "powerhouse" that cut high-voltage cabling by roughly 70% versus R1. TESLA SHEDS $214.5 BILLION AFTER EARNINGS Tesla shares fell 14.5% to $319.69 after disappointing Q2 earnings, wiping $214.5 billion off its market value in the largest one-day loss in company history. The drop followed missed expectations, a more cautious timeline for Cybercab, Semi and Megapack 3, and Tesla's first negative free cash flow in two years amid $5.8 billion in quarterly capital spending. TESLA PUSHES BACK 2026 PRODUCTION GOALS Tesla no longer expects volume production of the Cybercab, Semi, Megapack 3 or Optimus in 2026, blaming the need to scale 4680 battery output, even as quarterly revenue rose 26% to $28.2 billion on stronger deliveries. Despite the sales rebound, net income fell 5% to $1.1 billion, free cash flow turned negative $1 billion, and 2026 capital expenditure is now expected to reach $25 billion. DENZA Z9 GT OPENS UK ORDERS BYD's luxury brand Denza has opened UK orders for the Z9 GT shooting brake, starting at £105,000 for the EV and £95,000 for the plug-in hybrid, more than triple its Chinese starting price. The EV offers up to 599 km WLTP range, a 122.49 kWh Blade Battery 2.0 pack, tri-motor output of about 1,140 hp, and Flash Charging claiming 10-70% in roughly 5 minutes, as BYD tests premium pricing with a Daniel Craig/James Bond campaign. CARMAKERS PRESS UK TO REOPEN 2035 BAN BMW, Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Bosch privately urged UK ministers in April to keep combustion, hybrid and range-extender vehicles on sale beyond 2035, citing the EU's softened 90% target and customer demand concerns. The Department for Transport insisted the 2035 phase-out is not being renegotiated, while critics including Polestar's UK boss and thinktank ECIU warned that delay risks jobs and climate goals despite the manufacturers employing about 30,000 people in the UK. BMW IX1 AND IX2 WIN FULL UK GRANT BMW secured the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant for the iX1 and iX2 in the UK, tied to its Science Based Targets commitment and the Regensburg plant's renewable energy use, making the iX1 eDrive20 Sport start at £33,315, cheaper than its petrol X1 equivalent. BMW also added a new, more affordable iX2 eDrive20 Sport variant at the same £33,315 starting price, alongside other grant-eligible trims. NHTSA OPENS RULE ON CAR DOOR ESCAPE NHTSA has opened formal rulemaking on requiring reliable manual door-escape systems in new US cars, responding to a petition citing incidents where flush, electronic door handles—used notably by Tesla—trapped occupants after crashes or power loss. Bloomberg reported at least 15 deaths linked to such failures, and any final rule could force manufacturers to add mechanical backups and revise crash-test protocols, though the process is expected to take months to years.

Prices start at £38,155 excluding VAT, and the van shares its Ford Transit Custom-derived plug-in hybrid platform while retaining a 1,132kg payload and 2,300kg towing capacity. GERMAN BEVS GOT CHEAPER, NOT PRICIER A study by ICCT and Fraunhofer ISI found that comparable battery EVs in Germany fell about 18% in real terms between 2020 and 2025, even though average list prices rose from roughly €37,000 to €53,000 due to larger, better-equipped models. Battery costs dropped 21-24% nominally over the period, but manufacturers mostly reinvested those savings into extra range and R&D rather than passing them fully to buyers. FORD APPROVES F-150 HOME BACKUP SWITCH Ford has approved Global Power Products' GenerLink transfer switch for F-150 Lightning and PowerBoost Hybrid owners, letting Pro Power Onboard feed a home's main electrical panel directly without extension cords. The hardware costs $1,100 plus installation fees of $250-$1,500, positioning it as a cheaper alternative to Ford's automatic wall-charger-based backup system. NISSAN LEAF NISMO LAUNCHES IN JAPAN Nissan has launched the Leaf Nismo in Japan starting July 22, with North America and Europe to follow later; it keeps the standard 160kW/214hp motor and battery but adds recalibrated software for about 20% stronger initial acceleration, plus suspension, tyre and aerodynamic upgrades. Pricing starts at ¥6.60 million (~$40,600), rising to ¥7.23 million (~$44,510) for the weight-saving Recaro edition. SILA RAISES $300 MILLION FOR US ANODES Sila has raised $300 million to expand production of its Titan Silicon silicon-carbon anodes, which it claims can boost EV range by up to 20% and energy density by 20-40% with faster charging. Its Moses Lake, Washington factory is scaling toward 250 GWh of annual capacity within five years, with customers including Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic Energy already signed up. MILENCE OPENS ZERO-EMISSION BUILT HENGLO TRUCK HUB Milence has opened its fourth Dutch heavy-duty charging hub, at Deurningen-Hengelo on the A1, notable as the company's first built entirely using zero-emission construction machinery. The site offers five 400kW CCS bays plus rest facilities, and Milence, backed by Daimler Truck, Traton and Volvo, plans to replicate the all-electric construction approach at future hubs. SPECTRE CLIMBS AS ROLLS-ROYCE KEEPS V12 The Rolls-Royce Spectre became the brand's second best-selling model worldwide in 2025, drawing a younger buyer base and showing little resistance from existing V12 customers, according to sales director Julian Jenkins. Despite this EV momentum and an upcoming Spectre Series II with 500kW output and 628km range, Rolls-Royce has dropped its 2030 V12 phase-out plan, citing regulatory changes, and will keep selling both powertrains. GRIDSERVE OPENS FIFTH ELECTRIC FORECOURT AT M1 GRIDSERVE has opened its fifth Electric Forecourt at Markham Vale on the M1, featuring 39 ultra-rapid 400kW ABB charging bays, solar panels and rainwater harvesting, bringing its national network past 200 sites. The launch follows a record first half of 2026 in which battery electric vehicles reached about 24.9% of UK new car registrations. HOME CHARGING LEAVES RAPID NETWORK UNDER STRAIN A YouGov survey of 2,086 EV drivers found 74.6% use public chargers only once every few months or less, reflecting that 91% of EV owners can charge at home where off-peak tariffs can fall to 7p/kWh versus 87p/kWh for public rapid charging. This heavy reliance on home charging is squeezing public chargepoint operators financially, even as rapid chargers remain essential for longer journeys. AUSTRALIA POST GETS $40.5M FOR HEAVIER EVS Australia Post will receive a $40.5 million federal investment in 2026-27 to add electric vans, trucks, prime movers and depot charging infrastructure, building on its existing fleet of over 5,000 electric vehicles. The move aims to cut diesel use by about 1 million litres a year while supporting a delivery network handling 2.2 billion parcels annually. AVILOO EXPANDS USED EV BATTERY WARRANTY NORTH Aviloo has extended its used EV Battery Warranty to Norway and Denmark, adding to ten existing European markets, using its three-minute Flash Test to set an individual State of Health threshold for each vehicle. If a covered battery falls below that threshold within a year, buyers receive compensation of up to 34,000 kr in Norway or 23,000 kr in Denmark, plus a refund of the test cost.

EUROPEAN EV SALES JUMP 52% IN JUNE European EV sales rose 52% in June, with volume models up 59% and premium models up 31%, pushing year-to-date growth to 35% overall. Tesla led the market with the Model Y and Model 3, while models like the Renault 5, Skoda Enyaq, and Leapmotor T03 showed strong gains, and BMW topped the slower-growing premium segment. GM EV RESET COSTS $10.9 BILLION GM’s shift away from aggressive EV expansion has now cost $10.9 billion, including a new $2.3 billion charge tied to reducing battery capacity and retooling factories for more petrol vehicles. The reversal follows weaker EV demand and missed targets against Tesla, mirroring similar multi-billion-dollar pullbacks by Ford, Stellantis, and Volkswagen. RANGE ROVER SHOWS ELECTRIC GT PROTOTYPE JLR has unveiled a low-slung electric GT-style crossover as a fifth Range Rover model, blending SUV and saloon design on its EMA platform. A production version is expected next year with likely dual-motor AWD, though performance and range figures remain undisclosed. HOLLYWOOD TESLA DINER TOPS GLOBAL SUPERCHARGER NETWORK Tesla’s Hollywood diner and Supercharger site became the busiest in its global network within a year, delivering 21.2 GWh and averaging about 1,600 daily charging sessions. The location significantly outperforms other sites in weekly energy delivered, highlighting demand for high-traffic charging hubs. SWEDEN EV SHARE HITS 67% IN Q2 Plug-in vehicles reached a 67% market share in Sweden in Q2 2026, driven mainly by BEVs rising to 42% while PHEVs declined slightly. Overall car sales grew 22%, supported by new rural-focused incentives, with the Volvo EX40 remaining the top-selling BEV. VOLKSWAGEN ID. POLO STARTS AT £23,945 Volkswagen’s new all-electric ID. Polo will start at £23,945, marking a key model in its “True VW” strategy with improved design, usability, and physical controls. Offering up to 280 miles of range and modern tech across trims, it aims to balance affordability, practicality, and everyday performance. VOLKSWAGEN BACKS SAFETY-LED E-BIKE RANGE Volkswagen has backed a premium e-bike line featuring 250W motors and a 25 km/h limit, focused on safety and urban usability rather than speed. Key features include a radar-assisted rear-view system, integrated lighting, and optional smart helmet and HUD glasses to bring car-style safety tech into micromobility. HYUNDAI UNITES V2X UNDER ALL DAY ENERGY Hyundai has launched All Day Energy, a unified V2X platform that combines its regional systems into a single global service accessible via vehicle apps. The system enables EVs to supply power to homes, buildings, other vehicles, and the grid, with the UK set as the first rollout market. BURNHAM CUTS POWER VAT, WIDENS EV CHARGING GAP The UK will remove VAT on domestic electricity from October, cutting bills and benefiting EV owners who charge at home while leaving public charging taxed at 20%. This widens the cost gap for the 32% of households without driveways, intensifying calls for equalised charging taxes. ABARTH 500E GETS UK GRANT The Abarth 500e now qualifies for a £3,750 UK government grant, reducing its price to £24,245 and making the electric hot hatch more accessible. The incentive aims to broaden its appeal beyond early adopters since its 2023 launch. ILLINOIS EV REBATES RETURN ON AUGUST 1 Illinois will relaunch its EV rebate program on August 1 with $14 million in funding, offering up to $4,000 for low-income buyers and $2,000 standard rebates. The program runs until funds are exhausted, with strict eligibility rules including price caps, dealer requirements, and no leases. USED EVS KEEP MORE BATTERY THAN FEARED A Swedish study of nearly 10,000 tests found many EVs retain 95–97% battery capacity after over 100,000 km, challenging common concerns about degradation. Models like the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona performed best, while battery chemistry and supplier differences also significantly affected long-term health.
