What if all that thinking, planning and preparing for your coaching practice, is actually what's keeping you from creating it? In this episode, we're exploring one of the most fascinating aspects of the psychology of behavioural change: the preparation stage. It's where all our lovely planning, learning and researching can become a really sophisticated way of keeping us stuck. We'll explore how we can create the conditions to do the things that really matter to us. Also mentioned: Penny Wincer's writing community - The Fold . Penny is on the Gram here: @pennywincer I have three places remaining for new coaches to join Ripen this year. If you're ready to move from thinking about your coaching practice to actually building it, I'd love to have a chat with you! At the heart of this ep is what it means to back yourself when you don't have any evidence yet, whether it's your business or your body. Sometimes we need to borrow belief from someone else, which is why having a coach is often so bloody life-changing. If you've ever said to yourself: “I’m just not that kind of person” listen in! Becasue me! I HAVE! I have never been a gym person. Never understood how to properly take care of my body (without falling into some weird restriction/ permission cycle). Never understood that exercise could actually be fun, never mind something I would look forward to. But here we are. And the woman I have to thank is my coach, Sarah Knight. Sarah is a strength and transformation coach whose work has literally changed my life. She is an aces Macunian with the biggest brain and heart and I am so glad she was up for this chat. Meet Sarah: @sarahk_coaching Sarah Knight: a Strength & Transformation coach for women over 30 💪 who are looking to create a transformation not just in their physique or weight, but to transform their relationship with exercise, nutrition, their inner voice and themselves! The Body Stories: Body Stories 1 - Can you love yourself and still want to lose weight? Body Stories 2 - Under-nourished to moderately active Body Stories 3 - Emotions, embodiment and protein popcorn Body Stories 4 - Becoming High Maintenance Body Stories 5 - Am I The Biggest Loser? What happens when you pour your heart, energy and hopes into something, and the results fall well short of what you wanted? I recently launched the Self-belief Coaching Academy hoping to fill 12 places and generate £80k. This did NOT happen. In this episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes of what actually happened: the marketing that didn't quite work, the unexpected life stuff, the disappointment, and the lessons I'm taking into my next chapter. And why, despite missing my target by a mile, I'm genuinely celebrating. Because running a coaching business is hard, things don't always go to plan, and I think it's time we stopped making disappointing results mean we've failed. *** 🪴 FREE Private Podcast Bold not Beige: Why your coaching isn’t selling and what to do about it 🍑 Apply now for Ripen www.saspetherick.com/ripen 🌀 Join The Coaching Well for Group Supervision 🌼 Website: www.saspetherick.com | Instagram: @saspetherick 👋🏼 If you've enjoyed Courage & Spice, please leave a review , subscribe on your favourite app, or share this episode with another coach. What happens when you take what you learn in a coach training + make it your own? In this episode, I’m sharing snippets from conversations with SBCA graduates who are using this work in brilliantly different ways — from a money mentor, a couples therapist, and coaches working with teenagers, relationships and leaders. We talk about what the training has made possible in their coaching, the difference between confidence + self-trust, and how understanding what sits underneath self-doubt has shaped the way they work with their clients. If you’re curious about SBCA + want a peek at what this work could look like woven into YOUR coaching medicine, this one’s for you. The next Self-Belief Coaching Academy begins 5th October. Self-belief Coaching Academy is ENROLLING NOW! What if the thing keeping you stuck in your coaching business… isn’t actually a business problem? Because sometimes you DO need a better offer. Clearer messaging. A proper sales strategy. AAAAAAND sometimes you can buy another course, rewrite your website for the 47th time and spend six weeks prcrastiphaffing behind the scenes… and still find yourself in exactly the same place. Because you’re trying to solve a self-belief problem with strategy. And those two things need VERY different solutions. If you’ve ever found yourself endlessly searching for the missing piece, struggled to implement advice that you KNOW makes sense, or wondered why building the business you genuinely want can feel so personal… this episode is for you. This might change the way you look at the part of your business you’ve been struggling with completely. Self-belief Coaching Academy is ENROLLING NOW! How do you know if you’re a good coach? Especially when so much of coaching happens behind closed doors, and your own self-doubt isn’t always the most reliable narrator. For many coaches, there’s a strange gap between deeply valuing reflection and feedback, and at the same time feeling a bit exposed by the prospect of looking too closely at our client work. In this episode, I’m joined by SBCA Head Support Coach Scott Robson, to explore what actually helps us become better practitioners. We talk about the protective patterns we bring into the coaching room, learning to tolerate uncertainty without rushing to rescue or resolve, and why excellent coaching is less about being perfect and more about staying present. We also share the new evidence-based assessment approach inside Self-Belief Coaching Academy: a way of examining real coaching conversations that turns assessment into part of your development, rather than a final verdict on whether you’re good enough. Your most self-aware clients can already see what isn’t working and they know they want to change - that’s why they’re coaching with you! So how frustrating is it when you have one of those glorious “Oh my God, that’s it” sessions together… and then nothing really changes for them? In this episode, I’m breaking down why your client’s resistance to applying their insight and making actual changes is always useful information, and what it might be pointing to. We’ll explore the difference between coaching the beliefs and behaviours a client can already see and working with the organising identity underneath them. What if doubling your coaching revenue didn’t require more followers, more sales calls, another offer or squeezing more clients into your already-full week? Most coaches default to six sessions or three months without ever really questioning why. Beneath that arbitrary ending are often some very human doubts: What if I run out of tools? What if the client stops getting value? What if I can’t justify asking them to stay? But the business you want may already be hiding inside the depth of work you’re capable of offering. This is an invitation to think differently about what makes longer-term coaching valuable, ethical and genuinely developmental. Because when you trust your capacity to offer both meaningful support and meaningful challenge, brilliant coaching becomes your greatest business strategy. What actually happens when you launch your heart's work into the world? We've all heard about the emotional rollercoaster of launching, but what if you designed this around the ways you naturally connect, promote your work in a values-led way, and allow yourself to be supported? This is such a candid, joyful conversation about launching - with fab returning guest (and Ripen mentoring client), Stephanie McKinnon. If you are carrying an idea that matters deeply, but still wondering - Who am I to do this? Will anybody want it? And can I bring it into the world without exhausting/abandoning myself in the process? - this episode is totally for you! Connect with Stephanie: Stephanie MacKinnon is a certified coach and community facilitator, dedicated to supporting people who give a shit as they navigate the tension between their values and the realities of living under late-stage capitalism. For over 15 years, across community spaces and coaching rooms, she's created space for people to slow down, think clearly, and dream beyond this moment toward what could be. She supports artists, care workers, public servants, and ethical business owners — people who refuse to give up on a better future but also refuse to abandon themselves in the process. Having supported more than 100 clients over the years, she's now channelled that work into ROOTED, a leadership programme for people who want to ground in their values, resist the pressures of capitalism, and take small, steady steps toward a future they believe in. Does your business feel a bit noisy and complicated, with a collection of loosely related offers you’re constantly trying to market? Or maybe you're feeling overwhelmed by all the things you could be doing, so you aren’t doing very much at all? Perhaps you’re longing for a business that feels simpler, but there's also a lot of resistance to this - the spacious business we say we want can feel surprisingly unsafe... In this episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my very boring business (nb: this has been years in the making: let's massively shortcut this for you!). We are talking about the structure, the seasons and the self-belief involved in building your client-centred offer ecosystem that supports your people, your preferences, and the practice you are dreaming of. If you’re at the start of building your coaching practice (or perhaps still in pre-contemplation mode!), I know you’ll love this episode. I’m chatting with Laura Bernard, the Midlife Women’s Coach and a very fab human. Laura is building her practice while holding down her day job as a registered nurse and parenting two ace kids. She shares so generously about what her first six months in business have really involved: the wobbles, the visibility, the experimentation and the joy of finding work that feels like hers. If you’re wondering whether you can build a coaching practice alongside the rest of your life, this conversation will leave you feeling far less alone, and hopefully rather more possible. Anyone exhausted from the never-ending conveyor belt of advice about what coaches should be doing?! Start a Substack. Build a funnel. Use this *one magical caoching tool*. I reckon instead of asking: “What else should I be doing?” we should start thinking about what it's safe to stop paying attention to. In this episode, I’m exploring five seductive distractions that can pull thoughtful coaches away from the work that actually matters, and how to tell the signal from the noise in your business and your coaching. I'm sharing the five questions I come back to whenever my own business feels wobbly, or when I'm supporting coaches inside Ripen. They're not quick fixes or growth hacks. They're the questions that help you understand what's actually happening in your business, so you can stop catastrophising, start paying attention, and focus your energy where it will make the biggest difference. Whether you're just getting started or you've been coaching for years, I hope this episode reminds you that building a business isn't about finding certainty. It's about becoming more adaptable. You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to keep asking better questions. Everyone's talking about using AI to create more content and we think that's the least interesting way to use it! In this episode, Nivek Harrison joins me to explore why AI doesn't have to make your coaching practice feel less human. We talk about where it can genuinely save you time, where it absolutely can never replace you, and how to use it without handing over your judgment, creativity or values. Three reasons to listen: Forget churning out soulless content - AI can become an extra member of your team. Learn why your coaching is becoming more valuable, not less. And of course we talk about some of the ethical questions: the hype, the built-in bias, and the weirdass hallucinations, so you can make thoughtful decisions about where AI might support you (or not). Content note: This episode includes discussions around intentional weight loss and diet culture, and therefore contains swearing. This episode is part of a podcast series: The Body Stories. I’m joined by my beloved friend and fellow coach, Ali Shapiro. Over the year, Ali and I have been engaged in an occasional and ongoing conversation about the nuanced relationship with our bodies. These are tender conversations, and at times, I will be in the coaching client seat. We hope that listening in will spark your own exploration of your body story. - In this sixth and final episode, we chat about the identity level changes that long-term consistent devotion to health has led to: the massive increase in possibility and potential, having a deeper sense of physical presence, the fun of shopping for clothes, and enjoying dates. As well as the vulnerability of having nowhere to hide, the grief and the dysmorphia. Resources for you: Meet Ali Shapiro . What happens when you give a TEDx talk, pack up your life, leave one country, return to another, and try to hold the grief, gratitude, excitement and sheer logistical chaos of all of it?? Running a coaching practice is honestly just one decision after another! And most advice about decision-making assumes there’s a right answer - if you just think harder, plan better, or get clearer - you’ll land on it. But what if the real work isn’t finding the answer…it’s expanding your capacity to hold nuance? In this episode, I’m exploring how our work as coaches and business owners is full of nuance, but this is a rarely commented-on skill! If you want to know why you feel overwhelmed by decisions and why you might be seeking out the wrong answers, this is a fun conversation. We’ll look at: – why our familiar ways of thinking feel so compelling – how different ways of making meaning create different kinds of decisions – and what becomes possible when you stop trying to solve problems - for yourself and clients! Last week, on a sales call, a really experienced leader + trained coach asked me a question I hear all the time: “How will I know when I’m ready to go all in on Coaching?” And I’ve been thinking about it ever since! Because here’s the truth — you might not ever feel ready. At least, not in the clean, certain, fear-free way you might be hoping for. In this episode, I’m sharing a personal story about my own “all in” moment, the psychology of regret (and why it keeps us stuck), and the subtle self-doubt patterns that make thoughtful coaches hover just on the edge of beginning.
