Quinn Henoch & Zak Gabor are back with another episode! On this show, we tackle some topics around exercise prescription that we know you wrestle with too — how far out do we program for our rehabbing athletes? Is it different than an athlete training only for “performance”? What does “periodization” really mean, and how do we balance being flexible enough with our programming to account for the volatility of rehab, while not losing sight of the big picture? They discuss it all. Quinn Henoch & Zak Gabor are back with another episode! On this show, the CA squad sat down with Peter Malliaras who has done a TON of the research over the last decade on all things tendons and tendinopathy. You’ve probably come across some of his work, even if you didn’t realize it. He’s really helped to push the field forward. The cool thing is that he’s also a clinician, so he understands this stuff from multiple angles, and we all know how tricky tendon issue issues can be clinically. So, we’re super excited to have Peter share some of his knowledge with you on this one. We hope you enjoy! Quinn Henoch & Zak Gabor are back with another episode! On this show, the Clinical Athlete squad sat down with Kyle Thibodeaux, the owner of Refine PT & Performance. Kyle and the Refine team are one of our newest Clinical Athlete partners, and it’s a match made in heaven; because Refine is a people-first business, that puts their athletes and clients first and provides their staff with real mentorship. And that now includes the Clinical Athlete Provider certification. We pick Kyle’s brain on the types of values and habits that has helped Refine turn into a thriving and sustainable business. There are a ton of gems in this one. Also, Kyle was a part of the old Clinical Athlete Forum as a student almost a decade ago, so it’s pretty cool to see things come full circle here. Quinn Henoch & Zak Gabor are back with another episode! The “Honey & Vinegar” segment makes its return, as Zak rants about what annoys him on social media, and Quinn calms the waters with a shout out to coaches and other providers who put their athletes first. And then we talked about a couple of scenarios that were going on with their athletes that had to do with athletes posing the question of using external supports such as knee wraps during training and another about modalities, in this case dry needling. These discussions with athletes can be very fruitful, but also challenging, so we talk about that a bit here. We hope you enjoy! On this show, Quinn Henoch & Zak Gabor discuss all of the things that make mid stage rehab challenging, and common pitfalls, like: Sticking arbitrarily to rigid timelines and progressing before the athlete is ready Waiting too long to start introducing basic entry points for your exercise categories Not having a clear understanding or criteria for what qualities need to be prioritized Also, we are VERY excited to introduce a new segment, where Zak and Quinn bring a little honey and vinegar to the rehab space — and Quinn got to put on his hater shades! We’re still open to names for this segment, so feel free to help us out! We hope you enjoy! On this show, we are joined by Kellen Cannon who is a badass Physical Therapist who loves working with active people and the athletic population within her own business — but, has also been a travel PT for several years now. And that’s the part that we really dive into on this show. Travel PT seems like this huge unknown to a lot of people, and you definitely hear about all the cons and horror stories that are seemingly associated with it. But are those things even true? What are some of the pros? If this is ever something that you have considered for your own career, or know someone who is, this is the show. Kellen goes into so much useful detail and gives us an insider perspective on the ins and outs of travel PT, and we’re really appreciative to her for sharing these insights. We hope you enjoy! On this episode we welcome a very special guest. Many of you know him already, because he’s been part of the Clinical Athlete community since 2016, and was the podcast co-host for several years. It’s Jared Maynard. He’s back! We had countless shows in the past with Jared, in which we talked X’s and O’s of training, deep sciency stuff, but this show is a little different. Jared has been on quite the ride — around this time 5 years ago, he was literally fighting for his life, spending 5 weeks in the ICU with a body that was failing him. Ask the doctors that worked with him directly, the fact that he’s talking to us now is nothing short of miraculous. So, that’s what we’re talking about today — Jared’s story, it’s one of overcoming odds and coming back stronger with some powerful messages for anyone to take away for their personal lives, their coaching, or clinical practice. On this episode we have the whole Executive Clinical Athlete Provider Mentor Team — Quinn Henoch, Zak Gabor, Steph Allen, and Steph Mundt. We started as the 4 mentors in the Clinical Athlete Provider Certification Program exactly two years ago in March of 2024. Our mentor team has now grown to 8 and counting, but there’s been a ton of growth in many other aspects over the last 2 years. So, we thought it’d be a great opportunity to get the 4 of us on the show for the first time together, and reflect on the last two years. There’s a lot of great nuggets to take away from this about working with a team and continuing your professional development within leadership positions. We hope you enjoy! On this episode Quinn Henoch and Zak Gabor talk about a really important topic — the best Ninendo 64 games of all time. We actually do talk about that, but also, we talk about timelines in rehab and communication with our athletes around forecasting and prediction of how rehab should go, how long it will take — all of the things that give us anxiety but that we address on a regular basis in our practice. What makes up our timeline predictions? And what happens if the original timelines that we communicated don’t match up with how the athlete’s rehab is actually going? We dig into all of that and more. We hope you enjoy! On this episode we welcome an awesome guest — The Plyo guy himself and creator of Plusplyos Matt McInnes Watson. Matt is an absolute go-to resource for anything and everything regarding plyometrics, and has had a big influence on us and how we view these things within the Clinical Athlete community. What the heck does “plyometric” even mean? How can we break down the barriers to entry for coaching, programming, and performing these movements? It’s a Clinical Athlete Diary vibe. When’s the last time you re-read a book or retook a course, instead of buying a new one? On this show, Quinn Henoch and Zak Gabor welcome a special guest onto the show – Matt Kuzdub. Matt is a tennis coach and a tennis strength & conditioning coach – and I’ll even frame that differently, that’s he’s just an awesome sport and S&C coach and the sport and athletes that he works with happen to be tennis players. He’s also Zak’s tennis and S&C coach and Matt is currently finishing up going through the Clinical Athlete Provider certification — which has been awesome for all of us because he’s already such a wealth of knowledge. So, we’re really excited to share this conversion with you — we discussed what shaped Matt’s current training philosophy, how he balances needing to help his athletes develop multiple qualities simultaneously in a sport without much of an off season, some myth busting and misconceptions in training tennis athletes, and much more. It was an awesome conversation. On this show, we welcome a very special guest Asaf Klaf Weisman. Asaf is a clinician and a researcher, who for the better part of the last decade has really challenged some of the conventional wisdom around contemporary pain science, pain neuroscience education, and the biopsychosocial model as a whole. For this convo, we use the widely accepted aphorism of “Nociception is neither necessary nor sufficient for pain” as an example to anchor to what might be, at best, a claim formed on shaky evidence and at worst, just plain wrong, misleading, and keeping the field from moving forward. Zak leads this interview, and we unpack many layers. It’s a dense show, so make sure you eat something, buckle in and prepare for some mind melt in the best way. The Brain Gainz come off the back end of that. We hope you enjoy! On this show, Quinn Henoch and Zak Gabor welcome two special guests onto the show – Josh D’Angelo and Rich Ortiz of MovementX Josh is a co-founder of MovementX, which is a company that is providing Physical Therapists with unique employment opportunities that help them both scratch the entrepreneurial itch, but also provide stability within an established and trusted brand. It was really cool to hear Josh tell the founding story and go into what makes MovementX such a unique company to work for, and in turn, to bringing great care to their clientele. And Rich Ortiz is one of those bright shining star Physical Therapists who’s crushing it within the MovementX umbrella, so it was cool to get that perspective as well – and Rich also recently completed the clinical Athlete provider certification, so he’s a great example of someone who is really trying to maximize their professional development gainz. We go into a ton more – what can rehab professionals do to connect with their communities and educate them on what value they bring to the table, what can new grads do, or anybody looking for growth really, to find those new opportunities, and a ton more. It really was a great conversation. We hope you enjoy! On this show, Quinn Henoch and Zak Gabor welcome two special guests onto the show – Chris Juneau and Jason Tuori. Chris and Jason are two all-star physical therapists who we consider good friends and who we’ve had the privilege to work with in varying capacities over the years. They are co-hosts of the PT Inquest podcast and teach a continuing education course called Dungeons and Dynamometers – which is all about teaching principles and methods of objective testing for clinical care and performance. And that’s the topic of discussion for this show – we cover some big picture questions like, why do we test at all? Why does it matter? When does it not matter? How do we utilize the data that we gather? And then we get into the weeds a little bit too, on the differentiation of kinematics and kinetics, testing set up, dynamometer use, and a ton more. And of course, we ask the big question – is manual muscle testing a valid and reliable means of testing & monitoring force production with data that we can trust to make decisions with? (spoiler: probably not) All of this AND more. We hope you enjoy! On this show, Quinn Henoch and Zak Gabor welcome a special guest onto the show – Ramsey Nijem who is the Director of Performance for the men’s basketball team at the University of Kansas. And before that, Ramsey worked for years in the NBA as a head strength & conditioning coach, so needless to say, he knows a thing or two about working with basketball players and teams at the highest levels. We go into so much on this show – what it’s like working within a high performance staff and how all the different hats of S&C, rehab, sport coaches all work together, differences in how he planned and programmed training in the NBA vs. college; how his training programs are structured from off season to in season, how he manages training when injuries or fatigue are present within the team or individual athletes to still help them get some kind of training effect in season, All of this AND more We hope you enjoy!
