When you're deciding which products to add to your line, you probably think about sales data first. But that's only part of the story. Amita Nair has built Amicreative into a cohesive, intentional brand by making product decisions from four angles: financial performance, design aesthetic, what customers actually want, and whether the product fits her brand voice. In this episode, she walks through how she's learned to say no to products that make business sense but don't fit her story—and why that clarity matters. In this episode, you'll learn: The four lenses for evaluating new products: data, design, customer voice, and brand alignment Why Amita chose to add aprons instead of expanding into oven mitts (and what that decision reveals about brand strategy) How licensing and product can coexist—and which one might take priority at different stages The role of peer community in making better business decisions and avoiding costly mistakes Why "I can add this" is different from "I should add this" How starting with a small, cohesive product line scales better than chasing every opportunity Ready to build a product line that's both profitable and true to your brand? If you're in the early stages of deciding which products to develop, or if you're mid-line and wondering whether that new category makes sense, LABS gives you access to the peer community and resources you need to make those decisions with confidence. Over the years, we've had hundreds of conversations on this podcast about what it means to build a sustainable, profitable product brand. And some of those conversations are just too juicy. They're too good to live in the archives. Today, I'm bringing one back. What you're about to hear is a short clip from a past episode. It's a topic that has stuck with me and still feels very relevant today. These throwback episodes are intentionally short and to the point because sometimes you don't need a full deep dive. Today I'm talking with someone I've admired for a long time— artist, author, illustrator, and creative entrepreneur Lisa Congdon . Lisa has been building businesses around her art for nearly 20 years, and in this conversation we talk about something that I think a lot of established brand owners will relate to, and that's what happens when you've built a successful business but you realize it's no longer the business you want to run. Lisa recently made the decision to close her retail business after 20 years, not because it was failing, but because she wanted more time and space to make art and pursue the work that really energizes her. I appreciate how intentional she was about that decision. She didn't just burn everything down and hope for the best, like some of us feel like doing every day, but she looked at her finances and considered other revenue streams. She created a plan and gave herself and her team a runway. We also get into how Lisa developed a recognizable artistic point of view, why making work that actually means something to you can create a stronger connection with your customers, and the difference between trend-driven, trend-agnostic, and trend-informed. There are so many good nuggets in this conversation about building a product brand that works commercially while still staying true to your creative voice and knowing when it's time to make a change. Today’s episode is sponsored by our Unlock Buyer Secrets Interview series . To make a strong first impression with wholesale buyers, we need to do a few things really well: We need to make it easy for stores to purchase from us We need to have clear pricing and terms & conditions We need to clearly communicate and add value at each touchpoint We need to focus on building strong relationships with our customers. And all of this becomes infinitely easier when we actively listen to our customers. This on-demand interview series will give you a competitive edge by providing an exclusive window into what buyers want and need from you. And, the best part, it's only $27 bucks. What happens when one client makes up 85% of your income, and then that client cancels the contract? For Melissa Hyatt , that moment became the reason she built a business with several ways to earn. Melissa shares her path from design director at Waverly Fabrics to running her own stationery and watercolor brand, and how a sketch on a piece of copy paper turned into a line of watercolor kits that has sold more than 1,000 units. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Melissa decided never to rely on one client again, and the five revenue streams she built instead: wholesale, teaching, licensing, art commissions, and direct-to-consumer How her first wholesale account came from a former Waverly colleague's referral, and why the network you already have matters Why she limits commissions and in-person classes to avoid burnout, and how that burnout led her to turn her teaching into a product How adding a higher-priced product raised her average order value, brought in new types of stores, and led to in-store teaching opportunities The inventory lesson from her first big trade show orders: she under-ordered brushes, shipped a few weeks late, and not one retailer canceled Today's episode is brought to you by our Is Wholesale Right for You workshop . Wholesale is not the only way to make money selling your products. Selling in bulk to retail stores that order multiple times a year instead of relying on one-off direct-to-consumer sales— yes please! Whether you are brand new to wholesale or you've hit a sales plateau, this free 25-minute on-demand workshop will give you actionable steps that you can take to strengthen your wholesale sales and marketing right away. What did it cost you to not do Paper Camp last round? Not what it costs to join the program — we'll get to that. I'm talking about the other number. The invisible one. The wholesale orders you didn't land because your pricing wasn't dialed in. The reorders that never came through because you weren't sure how to follow up and you didn't know what to say, or when to send it. The stores that passed on your line because your minimums didn't align with industry standards. The nights you spent Googling "how much should I charge for ___" instead of just knowing the answer off the top of your head or having a place to go and ask. Those missed opportunities cost you real money . But they don’t show up on your profit and loss statement. No one sends you an invoice for the money you left on the table. In this podcast episode, we're putting a number on it. Today's episode is brought to you by our Paper Camp program. Paper Camp is our wholesale coaching program where we teach you everything you need to know to build strong wholesale foundations. Over the course of 4 weeks, we tackle your product line, sales tools, and marketing plan, and we even talk about how to exhibit at trade shows if that's what you want to do. We start with your product line and go into everything from how often you should be releasing new products to ensuring that your numbers are sustainable for the wholesale market and their price for profit. Then we move into sales tools you must have for selling wholesale so you make a strong first impression with buyers like catalogs and your terms and conditions. Then, we cover marketing strategies and ways to reach various store owners. Each week's teachings build on the previous week, and we host weekly live engaging coaching calls to answer all of your questions. We will open enrollment for our next round of Paper Camp soon, and we sell this program out every time we run it. Join the wait list and you’ll get early access to enroll. Thirteen years in business. Nearly 700 wholesale accounts. And the biggest shift Rachel O'Neill of Loftipop made this year was admitting her wholesale business was being run like a D2C channel. If you started in direct-to-consumer and layered wholesale on top, this episode will feel familiar. Rachel came into Paper Camp with a thriving business at Loftipop and left with major enhancements: separate pricing logic, a leaner product line, and a strategy built around the retailers she already has. In this episode, you'll learn: Why wholesale is not an extension of your D2C business — it's a separate model with its own pricing, margins, and rules How Loftipop added 60 accounts in the 6 months after Paper Camp, growing from 690 to about 750 Why Rachel discontinued SKUs that were still selling — and why she felt "so much lighter" afterward How to run channel-by-channel margin math before keeping a product in your wholesale catalog What it looks like to nurture current retailers — email outreach, direct mail, and consistent touchpoints — instead of only chasing new accounts How staying open to change, 13 years in, became the shift that moved her whole business forward From the episode: "The biggest takeaway is that your wholesale business is not D2C. We came into wholesale thinking it was just an extension of our D2C... it's actually a whole separate business model and strategy." — Rachel O'Neill "If you're serious about wholesale, it's 100% worth the investment. In terms of numbers, we've already made our money back and more." — Rachel O'Neill Paper Camp is currently open for enrollment, which only happens twice a year! "My business is too young for this." If you've ever said that about wholesale, this episode is for you. Sherry Lam joined Paper Camp with fewer than 20 SKUs, a handful of inconsistent accounts, a full-time day job, and a brand-new baby — and decided that was exactly the right moment to build her wholesale foundation. She went from 3 shaky accounts to more than 50. This is her story, in her own words. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Sherry started wholesale with fewer than 20 SKUs — and how starting early with the right foundation paid off How she grew from 3 inconsistent accounts to more than 50 while working a day job and raising a baby How doing wholesale correctly early on turned a "maybe this is a hobby" question into a real revenue stream How to vet whether Paper Camp is right for you: free resources, the podcast archive, and talking to alumni before you invest Why she came back and took Paper Camp a second time — and what had changed, from Faire's growing role to new outreach norms What the alumni community looks like after the course ends, especially for solo founders About Sherry: Sherry Lam is the founder of Sherry's Palette , where she designs greeting cards, enamel pins, art prints, and more. She built her wholesale business from 3 accounts to over 50 while working a full-time day job — and she's offered to be a resource for anyone on the fence about Paper Camp. You know that moment when your business starts asking more of you than your systems can deliver? A key account shows interest, your line is scaling, and you can feel the gap between where you are and what's coming. That's exactly where Charina Cabanayan was when she joined Paper Camp — 75 independent accounts, a sales rep group, and a growing pressed floral line at Orchid & Pine Studio. This episode shares her experiences participating in Paper Camp. In this episode, you'll learn: How Charina grew from 75 to 125 wholesale accounts — including her first 3 key accounts — by building systems before chasing sales How to take the emotion out of pricing, and why creatives struggle with this more than any other part of wholesale Why she pulled her handmade collection from her wholesale catalog when the numbers showed it couldn't scale What changed in wholesale between her first business (250 accounts, twenty years ago) and today — and why experience goes out of date How to work with sales reps and showrooms without costly mistakes Why slowing down intentionally can be a sign of a healthy business, not a failing one Paper Camp is currently open for enrollment, which only happens twice a year! Here it is, your long-awaited, highly anticipated Faire market recap for this summer season. I've been watching brands in our community have wildly different experiences during this Faire market, and I've also been studying a lot of what people outside of our community have experienced. Some walked away with 6-figure orders over 4 days, others didn't get a single order, and we're talking about the same platform, the same market, the same 4 days. I'm going to share with you what I saw behind the scenes, what worked, what didn't, and what this means for your wholesale strategy going forward. Today's episode is going to be a little bit of tough love, but it is all in an effort to help you run your business more profitably and with more ease. Over the years, I have watched so many incredibly talented, hardworking product sellers that are underselling themselves. They're undercharging and they're underestimating what their business is actually capable of. Today, we're going to talk about money. Specifically, we're talking about the money that you are potentially leaving on the table right now without even realizing it. There are 4 big areas that I want to talk about, and I would be shocked if at least one of them doesn't apply to your business in some way. Today's conversation is all about growing your business intentionally, experimenting with new ideas, and building a brand that evolves alongside you. Today's guest is Kirstie Lee, the founder of A Jar of Pickles , a product company that creates playful gifts and accessories that celebrate Asian appetites. Kirstie's been in business for 12 years, starting as an Etsy hobby while she was in college, and she kept it running alongside her corporate job for 8 years. Then, she went full-time about 5 years ago after having her kids. Her brand now sells online, at craft shows, and through wholesale partnerships. Last year alone, she managed 43 retail markets across 4 states. Kirstie has been part of our Proof to Product community for more than a decade, and it has been such a joy to watch her business grow. In this episode, we talk about everything from balancing a corporate career while building a product brand to hiring your first employee, expanding into wholesale, building a devoted direct-to-consumer audience, and why treating your business like one big experiment has opened doors to opportunities that Kirstie never even planned for. I especially love Kirstie's perspective on listening to customers without letting every opinion dictate your direction and how staying curious has helped her continue growing year after year. If you are wondering what the next stage of growth could look like for your business and you're looking for encouragement that there is not one specific pathway to take for that success, then I think you're really going to enjoy today's episode. Today's episode is brought to you by our Is Wholesale Right for You workshop ! Wholesale is not the only way to grow a product brand, but it's definitely my favorite. If you are curious about selling to retail stores, or maybe you've hit a wholesale plateau and aren't sure what to do next, then this free on-demand workshop will help you identify your next best step along with action items to do that. Today's conversation is for anyone who has ever looked around their home, their studio, or their storage unit and thought: “we officially have too much inventory and we are running out of space.” Today we're talking about what happens when your business starts to outgrow your space and how to know when it might be time to make a move. Whether you're currently packing orders from your dining room table, juggling multiple storage units, or debating if a warehouse or even a 3PL is the step for your business, then this episode is going to highlight some options for you. I'm joined by two guests, returning guest Jodi Kostelnik of The Neighborgoods , who shares candidly about her experience moving from a multiple floor studio space into a warehouse space that was much better suited for supporting her team, her inventory and her business's growth. Jodi is a longtime Proof to Product member and a Paper Camp alum, and she shares generously in this episode like she has before. We're also joined by Samantha Rubenstein of WareSpace , a company creating flexible warehouse solutions that are specifically designed for small businesses and specifically designed for product brands that are shipping and storing inventory. We talk about the operational bottlenecks that happen as a product brand grows, the shifts in mindset that come with investing more money in space and logistics, and the practical considerations around things like cost, logistics, staffing, and general scale. One of the things I really appreciate about this conversation is that it highlights something I talk about a lot here on the podcast, that there is no one specific way to grow your business. There's no one specific roadmap to follow for success. Different businesses need different solutions and have different challenges. Today's episode highlights what has worked for Jodi as she has grown. I love that she's sharing the different things that she's done along the way to help her business grow even faster. If you have been feeling squeezed by your current setup or you're wondering what's next in your stage of growth, what that might look like for your brand, then I think today's episode will give you a lot to think about. One pattern I've noticed time and time again after working with thousands of product brands across lots of different categories, is that while our products might be different or our tools and platforms might change, all of our core business foundations and fundamentals are not changing. And that's exactly why I wanted to share this short clip from the archive, something that I think is worth revisiting because the takeaways still hold true today. Maybe listening will spark an idea or help you take action on a decision that you've been sitting on. Really, the goal here is to help you take your next intentional step in business. You have retailers sitting in your order history who bought from you six months ago and haven't heard from you since. Not because they were unhappy — because nobody followed up. Meanwhile you're on Instagram, tweaking your Faire shop, chasing people who've never bought anything. In this episode I make the case for rebalancing, and I give you three places to start. In this episode, you'll learn: Why a 5% improvement in retention can move revenue 25–95% — and what that looks like with real numbers when you have 100 wholesale accounts The difference between acquisition tactics and retention tactics, and why almost everyone's time and money is stacked on one side Why retention lives and dies on data, and the one thing to centralize before you buy any software What to audit in your customer journey — specifically the post-purchase stretch most brands leave empty Why a welcome sequence is the highest-return place to start (4x more opens, up to 320% more revenue than a regular newsletter — and only 57% of product brands send one) How I killed a six-month Pinterest contract based on the data, and where that money went instead "Your next sale probably isn't from a stranger. It's probably someone who has already purchased from you and is waiting to hear from you again." "The customer journey does not end at checkout." Ready to build the wholesale ecosystem behind all of this? Paper Camp is our four-week coaching program where we work through your pricing, your wholesale catalog, buyer outreach, and the sales systems that bring orders in year-round.
