Could your heart, brain and kidneys all be aging at different rates? In this episode of Live Long, Peter Bowes talks with Paul Coletta, co-founder and CEO of Vero Bioscience, about the emerging science of organ-specific biological aging. Researchers at Stanford have been studying whether proteins in the blood can help estimate how quickly individual organs are aging and whether that information could reveal future health risks before disease develops. Paul explains how proteomics, machine learning and organ-age clocks work, and why an unexpected result from his own kidney-age test helped draw him into the field. The conversation also explores the limits of biological-age testing, the risk of over-testing and health anxiety, and whether knowing your “weakest link” can genuinely help guide lifestyle changes or preventive care. We also discuss healthspan, sleep, sunlight, self-experimentation, emerging longevity interventions and the difference between extending life and extending the number of healthy years we live. Context for this episode The personal health practices, supplement choices and off-label therapeutic protocols discussed by Paul Coletta in this episode represent his own monitored “N-of-1” experiments. They are shared strictly for informational and educational purposes and do not constitute medical advice or endorsement. Individual responses to supplements, medications and lifestyle interventions can vary, and what is appropriate for one person may not be suitable for another. Some interventions may also carry risks, interact with medications, or require medical monitoring. Always consult your primary care physician or another qualified healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or health practices, or before starting new supplements or medications. For more than three decades, Gunnar Peterson has trained elite athletes and some of Hollywood’s best-known performers. But his approach to fitness is rooted in a principle that applies far beyond professional sport: exercise works best when it becomes part of everyday life. He argues that recovery deserves the same attention as strength, cardiovascular fitness and nutrition, particularly as we grow older. In this conversation, he discusses functional training, red light therapy and what high achievers have taught him about consistency. He also explains why longevity, for him, is less about perfection than staying strong, connected and fully engaged with life. Gunnar Peterson is head of performance and a partner at Solbasium, helping shape recovery technology from a coach’s perspective. Most of us assume that losing energy, struggling to sleep and taking longer to recover are simply inevitable parts of getting older. But what if they're not? Executive performance coach Drew Griesel believes many people are paying what he calls The Hidden Performance Tax - a slow, almost invisible decline in energy, focus and resilience that develops over years and eventually feels "normal." In this interview with Peter Bowes he explains why improving healthspan should come before pursuing longevity, why sleep quality may be the single most important driver of performance, and why the fundamentals - movement, nutrition, hydration and recovery - still matter more than the latest biohacks. Modern life asks less and less of our bodies, while placing ever greater demands on our minds. We move less, sleep poorly and fill every spare moment with stimulation—often without realizing the long-term consequences. Oscar Trelles explores the connections between recovery, resilience and the way we age. His work—through the wellness and performance company Breathing Flame—focuses on helping people better understand the conditions that shape health and long-term wellbeing. In his forthcoming book, The Human OS Manual , he argues that a longer, healthier life depends less on isolated interventions and more on the rhythms and routines that shape our days. Sugar is woven into our culture as a reward, a comfort and a celebration. But for some people, the relationship with food becomes far more complicated - and potentially life-threatening. Broadcaster and journalist Phil Williams has written with extraordinary candour about living with binge eating disorder and the hidden toll it took on his physical and mental health. In this Live Long conversation, he describes the shame, self-loathing and health scares that finally forced him to confront his addiction. It's a powerful reminder that living well isn't simply about adding years to life, but understanding the behaviours that can take those years away. This episode includes strong language. What is still possible in midlife? Many of us reach our forties, fifties and sixties assuming that the major chapters of our lives have already been written. Careers are established, habits are set, and the opportunity for significant change may feel increasingly limited. Jeffrey Weiss challenges that assumption. At the age of 48, he ran his first 10-kilometre race. In the years that followed, he completed Ironman Arizona twice, finished a 72-mile ultramarathon, and embarked on a successful new chapter in his professional life that culminated in a multi-billion-dollar startup exit. In this conversation, we explore the power of healthspan, the value of audacious goals, how fitness can transform both body and mindset, and why it's never too late to embrace a new challenge. Most of us know what healthy eating looks like. The challenge is sticking to it when life gets busy, stress levels rise, and convenience wins out. So what can we learn from the way elite athletes fuel their bodies, and from the systems that make healthy choices easier? In this conversation, Mario Limaduran, Culinary Director for Trifecta Nutrition, explores the realities of meal planning, the role of discipline and habits, and why perfection is often the enemy of long-term success. For decades, aging was seen as inevitable — a slow and irreversible decline. But a growing number of scientists now believe we may be entering a turning point, with research increasingly focused on extending not just how long we live, but how well we live. In the documentary Forever Young , filmmaker David Donnelly — alongside producers Dr. James Johnson and Dr. Thomas Lewis — explores the rapidly evolving world of longevity science, from biological clocks and AI-driven research to the power of lifestyle, purpose, and social connection. The film also confronts some of the field’s biggest questions: what aging actually is, whether it should be treated as a disease, and who stands to benefit if the science succeeds. In this conversation with Peter Bowes, Donnelly reflects on skepticism, scientific disagreement, and why he believes humanity may already be living through a longevity revolution. -- Learn more about Forever Young: The end of aging has just begun Apple TV Pre-order | Official Website | Substack | Instagram | X | Facebook | YouTube | Watch the Trailer -- DISCLOSURE: This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. Loneliness is increasingly being recognized not simply as a social issue, but as a major threat to public health. Cardiologist and behavioral medicine pioneer Dr. Alan Rozanski says the evidence is now clear: meaningful human connection influences everything from heart health to longevity and emotional resilience. In this conversation with Peter Bowes, he explains how social isolation affects the body biologically, why purpose and vitality matter as much as diet and exercise, and why modern life may be weakening our ability to connect. He also explores the difference between being alone and feeling lonely, and the complex role technology and social media now play in our relationships. Ultimately, he argues that the strongest predictor of long-term wellbeing may not simply be how long we live — but how vital and connected we feel along the way. -- May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, observed annually since 1949 to reduce stigma, provide support, and educate the public on mental wellness -- -- This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. As people live longer and stay healthier for more years, retirement is being redefined. What was once seen as a relatively short closing chapter can now stretch across decades, raising deeper questions about identity, purpose and how to spend our time well. Wealth adviser Gregg Lunceford has spent years studying this transition and the gap between leaving work and living well afterwards. He argues that traditional ideas of retirement, focused mainly on financial security, miss the psychological and social role that work plays in our lives. The challenge now is not simply knowing when to stop working, but how to shape a fulfilling life beyond it. Gregg Lunceford is a wealth advisor and researcher focused on how people navigate the transition into retirement. A Managing Director at Mesirow, he works with individuals over 50 to plan not just financially, but psychologically and socially for life beyond full-time work. Author of Exit from Work , he examines what he calls the “third age”: a potentially rich, 20-year phase shaped by reinvention, meaning, and a rethinking of what it means to live well. --------------- This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. Weight-loss drugs that target the hormone GLP-1 have rapidly reshaped the conversation around obesity, appetite and personal responsibility. But alongside the rise of powerful synthetic injectables, researchers are also exploring whether the body’s own appetite signals can be harnessed more naturally. At the heart of the debate is a simple question: are we eating too much because of weak willpower, or because of biology? As new approaches emerge, the challenge is to balance effectiveness, safety and long-term sustainability in tackling one of modern health’s most persistent problems. In this interview, Sarah Kennedy, founder of Calocurb, a New Zealand company which has developed a plant-based compound designed to naturally stimulate GLP-1, discusses the science of appetite control and how it compares to injectable drugs. --------------- Try Calocurb for yourself? Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how we understand our health — not just how we feel today, but how fast we’re actually aging. On this episode of Live Long , host Peter Bowes continues his personal experiment with Hundred , the AI-powered longevity platform that combines advanced blood testing, wearable data and personalized insights to track biological age and guide smarter health decisions. After introducing the app in an earlier conversation, Peter reconnects with Hundred’s founder, Tyler Smith, to go deeper into the idea of a “health operating system” — essentially a personal doctor in your pocket. Together they explore how continuous testing and AI analysis could help prevent disease, spot risks earlier, and motivate lasting behavior change — while also addressing the realities of over-testing, false alarms, privacy concerns and health anxiety. Peter also shares the results of his own first round of testing, what surprised him most, and how he’s using the data to shape his approach to longevity and healthy aging. ----- JOIN HUNDRED Optimize your healthspan and potentially lower your biological age. Imagine a day when alcohol no longer dominates our thoughts—at holidays, celebrations, or even a quiet night in front of the TV. Alcohol-free expert James Swanwick says a cultural shift is underway, with alcohol slowly losing its grip on our social and professional lives. Even moderate drinking can quietly sap sleep, focus, and long-term wellbeing—especially for high achievers. In this conversation, Swanwick explains the neuroscience of addiction, why going alcohol-free is gaining momentum, and how the stigma around teetotalism is fading. Mind–body training is widely recognized as a pillar of healthy aging. Research suggests that how we move — and how we think while we move — are deeply connected. When breath, focus and technique align, we sharpen cognition, reduce stress and build the kind of resilience that keeps us active for life. In this episode of Move for Life , fitness coaches Nate Wilkins and Shebah Carfagna explore why the mind–body connection is more than a trend — it’s a practical framework for living longer and living well. From tai chi and yoga to strength training or a simple daily walk, they highlight the unifying theme of intentionality: paying attention to what the body is doing and why. Even small rituals — stepping outside for a dose of “ecotherapy,” or taking a mindful decision-making walk — can transform everyday movement into powerful brain-training moments. Studies now show that moderate physical activity can ease anxiety and depression as effectively as some medications. It’s a compelling reminder that exercise isn’t just for the body — it’s one of the most potent tools we have for lifelong mental well-being. This is the latest in our 20-part series, Move for Life . Our understanding of the body's internal clocks is rapidly evolving, with new research shedding light on the powerful effects of circadian rhythms. From the way artificial light disrupts our sleep patterns to how animals’ natural cycles offer valuable insights into human health, the science is undeniable. Dr. Philippa Gander, a leading expert in sleep and circadian rhythms and author of Life in Sync: The Science of Internal Clocks and How We’re Disrupting Them explains how these disruptions impact not just humans but entire ecosystems, including marine life. Her groundbreaking work also reveals the profound effects of light pollution, offering fresh perspectives on how we can better align our lives with our biological clocks. In this conversation with Peter Bowes, Gander also highlights practical ways we can make adjustments to better sync our lives with nature’s rhythms for improved health and well-being.
